Fisher boards helicopter and leaves Dolphins facility

Jeff Fisher has left the Dolphins building ... I feel like I'm covering Elvis.

Wearing a suit and walking next to owner Stephen Ross and a man that Herald reporter David J. Neal believes was Carl Peterson, Fisher boarded the helicopter that was waiting on the Dolphins practice field adjacent to the team's Davis facility minutes ago and cruised away.

[Update: Carl Peterson is definitely the man in the picture.]

I'd like to tell you he might come back. I'd like to tell you the pair maybe went for lunch.

But who the heck takes a helicopter to lunch?

[UPDATE: The Dolphins just announced that they have completed their interview with Fisher.]

I can definitely tell you Fisher is gone.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Chargers have announced that head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will return for the 2012 season.

“Bottom line, I believe these two men give us the best chance to get back to the playoffs,” Spanos said. “A.J. Smith is the best man to improve our roster, and Norv Turner is the best man to lead that roster on the field.

“Together, we have stability and experience that’s hard to find in the NFL. They’ve both been in this league a long time. I don’t think there is anything they haven’t seen or experienced. They’ve led us through some difficult situations.

“As we’ve seen throughout Norv’s tenure and particularly this past season, the players believe in him, respect him and play hard for him. When we went through that tough stretch, no one quit. The team kept playing hard, and that’s a tribute to Norv’s leadership and the respect the players have for him.

“Now we will take a hard look at everything, from player evaluation to coaching to the rash of injuries we’ve suffered in recent years. Injuries have killed us. And no one is ever perfect in this business. Player evaluation isn’t an exact science. We need to improve across the board and I’m going to make sure we do.

“We all have our quirks and faults, but I want A.J. and Norv on my side. They are the right men to help us win a championship.”

So why is that important on a Dolphins blog?

Are you kidding?

The fact is the potential San Diego opening would have been very attractive, and probably the most attractive opening to Jeff Fisher -- who today happens to be touring the Dolphins facility and being begged to take the Dolphins job.

The Chargers are a Southern California team and Fisher is from, wait for it, Southern California. The Chargers have franchise-caliber quarterback Phillip Rivers on the team and Fisher has been floating through handlers that he wants to coach a team with a fairly settled quarterback situation. The Chargers have a lot of talent. Fisher likes teams with lots of talent.

So the deletion of the Chargers from the list of potential suitor improves Miami's chances. No question.

The fact Fisher has left, meanwhile, is not a good sign. Fisher is reportedly scheduled to meet with Tampa Bay and St. Louis this week.

Mike Martz? You're kidding right?

Phins78,
It is inexcusable to me that the Dolphins didn't draft a QB at some point during the draft. When Ryan Mallet FELL in the draft, Miami should have grabbed him and they didn't. It is worth taking a risk with a 3rd or 4th round pick for a guy who has a chance to be a franchise QB when you don't have one. PERIOD.

While not all Jeff Ireland's fault, this team has constantly passed on guys who have fallen to them for no apparent good reason.

Randy Moss --- 1st Round (Miami trades out)
Drew Brees --- 2nd Round (Miami passes twice)
Dez Bryant --- 1st Round

I'm sure I am missing a bunch more. These are players who were on the Dolphins Radar, Miami did extensive research on, and they PASS. Same thing with coaching prospects (example Mike Tomlin).

This team has CONTINUOUSLY disappointed AGAIN and AGAIN. One Pro-Bowler picked in last 4 years (1st overall pick Jake Long) is NOT acceptable, especially for a team with high draft picks and is "Rebuilding".

You state last years draft "went well". The lack of acquiring a QB automatically makes it a failure when everyone knew Miami needed to take a QB and they didn't. Besides that, Pouncey has been a solid player. Can he be a Pro-Bowler, who knows. The rest of the players are nothing special. Daniel Thomas was MEDIOCRE. I don't care if you say he lead rookies in rushing. The guy was MEDIOCRE. Gates has shown nothing. Clay is NOT better then Fasano (who is mediocre) and has not shown that he can be a starting or dominant TE. Look at all of the TEs Miami has passed on in last TWO years (Gronkowski, Hernandez, Graham, Finley, etc) just cause Parcells/Ireland love Fasano. Fasano is MEDIOCRE.

So you want to give Ireland another chance. I am saying he hasn't done ANYTHING to deserve it. By the way, if Ireland keeps picking the way he has LAST year, this team will be AVERAGE at best. We need to get some homeruns in the draft. Miami has rarely done that the last decade!

Bowles watched over one of the worst secondaries in the league and he's a good coach and Fisher coached a super bowl contender and he's rubbish. Wow.

Last year Jeff Ireland had a great draft taking an interior lineman nd a running back with the first two picks. WOW!!!

IF Miami signs Todd Bowles sorry to say all your South Floridians unless you have Sunday Ticket you will be missing most games next year because they will be blacked out!

Bowles and Matt Moore, wow!

Can someone please list the head coaches who bought their team to the Superbowl, then either retired or got fired...

...then re-entered the NFL and bought he's new team to the Superbowl?

I can think of one, Dick Vermiel (Philly & Rams).

Point being....there is NO guarantee that since someone (Fisher) bought their team to the Superbowl, that he will return with a new team.

NO MORE RETREADS....SIGN TOUB!

IrelandSucks, it's not just because they love Fasano, it's also because of their outdated football philosophy. Todays TE is big, fast and has good hands. They learn WR patterns and often line up as a WR. NE realized this a couple of years ago but I guess Jeffy didn't get the memo.

Butch Davis for head coach!

Since the 1st pick in 2008(our lone Probowler drafted):

23 teams have drafted probowlers. 9 teams have drafted MULTIPLE probowlers. Example - NE with FOUR.

For you Ireland supporters, please STOP telling us how NE makes mistakes too but nobody talks about them. You don't hear about the failures because they STILL find GREAT players!

I'll take 4 probwlers in 4 years ANY day over 1. Wouldn't you?

STOP telling us about Free Agency successes. How hard is it to steal or trade for players another team found & developed? Who are already past their peak (Dansby for example)

Ireland sucks. Deal with it & stop with your exucses. They are juvenile, infintile & lack any coherence.

Until this team finds a GM, it don't matter who the coach is! Your GM SUCKS!

You can't blame Fisher for wanting to keep his options open and wanting to give the other teams a chance to plead their case in wanting him to be their next head coach. It is only fair (technically). I do hope though that the front office gave him a blank check and asked him to name his price. That should let Fisher know that they are VERY serious about wanting him as head coach.

Has there been any other report of Billick getting an interview? He is the other former coach that intrigues me as much as Fisher. Keep us informed Mando!!

Earl Thomas made the pro browl this year as a ball hawking free safety instead we end up with Pee Wee Herman I mean Odrick. Ireland must go!

Ireland is backwards for sure. Today's NFL you win by passing the balk and creating/minimizing turnovers but yet our top two picks were an interior lineman and slow running back and our top free agent was an inside linebacker for the second year running. Ireland missed the memo indeed.

Was randy starks our leading interceptor this year?!??!

Okay, Search This aka Ireland sucks. Dolphins should have pulled the trigger on Brees. You're a genius for figuring that out. However, has nothing to do with Ireland. As far as how the Pats draft is so superior, let's look at 2011, you wanna?

pats fins dvantage
1 nate solder mike pouncey fins
2 Ros-I Dowling Daniel Thomas fins
3 Stevan Ridley traded
3 Ryan Mallett traded fins
4 traded Clyde Gates fins
5 marcus cannon traded
5 lee smith
6 markel carter Charles Clay fins
7 Malcolm Williams
7+ Frank Kearse
Jimmy Wilson fins
Ireland won 2011 hands down. Great players will pop up on other teams. The Dolphins will draft guys who aren't great. Until we can find a way to harness your magic hindsight prior to the draft, maybe you should ease up.

Mike Martz, now THERE is an interesting idea.

Strange to see that posted here. ;)

I seriously doubt any coach would be so against working with Ireland. Ireland got along well with the Tuna and has built a solid team here.

I'm pretty sure that no one with any REAL experience or talent would want to work with Ross and King Peterson. Those two guys COMBINED are only going to lower the resale value of Our Miami Dolphins by TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS then realize that this game is just not for them & leave.

**** BREAKING NEWS ****

NC, let's start with this: I'm not Ireland sucks. How's that for starters? MAYBE you shouldn't ASSume?

In case you missed it, fans planned to rent a plane to fly a banner to fire Ireland. You appear to be a minority Ireland supporter or apologist.

Now that that's outta the way. Could you stretch your argument any thinner? Your grading the 2011 draft class already? OK, if thats what you gotta do to justify things to yourself. Feel Free! Allow me to riduclue you for it. Deal?

Nate Solder doesn't have to play

What's so great about Daniel Thomas? WOW! I forgot...he played in games. That MUST make him a success!

Ryan Mallett doesn't need to play.

I'll stop there as the rest is pointless. A theme grew, don't you see it? When you have talent already (NE), you don't have to play guys right away.

You can draft luxury. NE is stashing those guys away while Miami is drafting players to play right away. Any idea why? Here's a thought:

TALENT GAP!

Nevermind. You Ireland apologists refuse to accept the truth. Even if it was a fat lady sitting on your face.

the difference between pats and dolphins is that pats need guys to fill holes we need impact players to compete with pats. Pats are in play off every year while we wait for the draft. We need a gm to get impact players players to start now not developmental players. Pats can do that cause they are playoff team. Why get a QB when you have Brady to fill a hole we can not do that we have to get starters and last year the only starter we got in the draft was pouncey.. not good.. We need a better GM

NCFINFAN70 -- the players we are talking about are players EVERYONE was talking about wanting on the radio, in the newspapers, etc. This is not second guessing in hindsight.

Even if it was, PARCELLS/IRELAND have drafted one pro-bowl player between them (with the 1st pick of the draft Jake Long). For a team rebuilding at basically EVERY position, this is UNACCEPTABLE.

Dolphins should have pulled the trigger on Brees. You're a genius for figuring that out.

Posted by: ncfinfan70 | January 03, 2012 at 04:15 PM

I never mentioned Brees. Way to go genius!! If you want to come at me in a childish tone, at least come at me with things I said.

Funny what you wont debate is that in the last 4 years, NE has acquired 4 probowl players & Miami only 1, via the #1 overall.

Youre all happy with Clay, Thomas & Gates? You can have em. I'd trade our last 2 drafts for Mccourty, Gronk & Mayo straight up.

Do you sit up at night & wonder why the Dolphins suck & why NE is a perennial SB contender?

NEXT!!

If he left without an announcement he wont be back. On to the next best qualified

No one in the right mind wants any part of Dumb and Dumber down here, it's pretty obvious....not Cowher, not Gruden, not Fisher.

I'm so tired of the glass half empty bloggers. Parcells is the biggest blame for all this!!!

Jeff Ireland had a good draft and FA signings without Parcells. We need to see this year's draft and FA before walking him to the door.

Parcells was a dinosoar and caused most of this.

These guys were 0-7, never blamed anyone but themselves. Played hard for Tony and Todd. Let's give them a little credit.

How did Tampa Bay do for Morris?

Take Ireland out of the equation and we could have most anyone. He would be the reason not to come to Miami, not because we have no Phillip Rivers.
Besides, what makes everyone think Fisher is the answer? I cannot even remember one thing about him and I follow the game. I am not excited about anyone that is available and is not looking for golden streets like washed up Pittsburgh head coach retirees.
And has anyone actually listened to "Chucky" call a game? A jerk at best.

No Carl Peterson. God! This owner sucks!
Hire Fisher.Get rid of Parcells guy Ireland.

Maybe I'm the only fan that say's...keep what you have in headcoach...QB....and just get more weapons. The Dolphins are a RT, WR and TE away from being a very good team. Add another OLB to replace Taylor. The ONLY thing change does is change...it doesn't guarantee that you will be better.

What a sad, sad situation for a proud franchise. Ross will soon find that Ireland is the sea anchor holding back the progress of the ship. Until they cut Ireland loose, the only coaches who will be interested are those who can't find a better situation anywhere else.

I think bowles should get the job & tinker with the rest of the staff

Ross, Petersen and Fisher getting off helicopter... jeez, sounds like a bad "Dallas" re-run with J.R. Ewing.

Did Ross get out the sex toys and vaseline right away or at least wait until they were seated.
Toub will be pissed when the limo shows up at airport and the driver is holding the "Toub" sign.
Bowles had to drive his car to work, clean out desk, then go to interview before getting last paycheck.
Proud to be a Dolphin fan...hmmm.
