Fisher expected to decide which team he'll coach today

I believe today will be a franchise defining day.

Jeff Fisher, who has been weighing whether to take the head coach job in Miami or St. Louis, is expected to make a decision which team, if either, he would like to work for in 2012. Let me be more clear: I am not reporting Fisher will be named coach of either team today.

I am reporting that, according to one source that thus far has been spot on, the coach is finalizing his choice of teams today. Following that decision, I am supposing here, Fisher will tell his agent which direction he's going and negotiations will get going on a contract and various other details.

I do not know what Fisher's decision will be. But it's obvious that whatever he decides will define the direction of both the Dolphins and Rams for years to come.

The winning team will be regarded to be hiring the hotest, most experienced coach on the market. That team will get a head coach who is going to piece together a star-studded coaching staff. That team's credibility will get an instant boost without even one game under the new coach being played.

The team that loses the Fisher sweepstakes will be regarded as having to hire a secondary choice. That team will be rightly seen as having lost out. That team will have to answer to its fan base questions such as, "What is it about you that was deemed to be lacking in this derby.'

It's entirely possible the team not getting Fisher gets a coach that some day in the future does better work than Fisher. But that won't be the narrative now. The narrative now will be that the losing team, well, lost out.

So how do I know Fisher is scheduled to choose today. Well, since the start of this entire saga I've gotten half a dozen e-mails from people claiming to be close to Fisher or his family or his closest friends. One of these people has provided rock-solid information. And that person tells me today is the day he was told Fisher is making his call.

We'll see what happens. I'd expect something to leak before the end of the day is over and definitely by tomorrow as to where Jeff Fisher is going.

..Andy in NJ..@ 2:50 You forgot Mark Mariani on that list..How dare you??? lol

If Nolan is retained by the new regime. We have to find an answer to our pass rush woes. finding a compliment to Wake has to be priority number 1(Defensivley).

The 3-4 was born to pressure the quarterback. The scheme has too many holes that good quarterbacks can exploit if they have time or no fear of getting pressured. I don't know if the 3-4 is superior to the 4-3, this isn't the point. I'm saying if we stick with Nolan. We have to get a pass rusher.

ToddBsClipboard -

Any prospective HC is going to be able to name his own staff, I have never seen otherwise.

It would be an even bigger deal breaker than potential GM issues regarless of whether we're taling Fisher or some coordinator out there. They are always allowed to handpick their staffs.

Just joined this blog now. I was not going to read the previous 8 pages to catch up. Thanks anyway.

I'm gonna turn the floor over to the trolls....

Later FIN FANS...

He didn't include himself he included me! Phins78. He is phinFAN78. Phins78 and phinsfan78 ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON!!!!!

Okay f**k this. Dude I was using this name first in here and now you've confused everyone. I am now changing my name to "Ih8phinsfan78"! :)

I live about 25 minutes from Cleveland.....I will pass it on if I heard any more on the Holmgran / QB situation

there ya go, no more confusion.

Fisher will obviously be able to hire his own staff. He's already assembled a great group if reports are accurate, actually.

If you don't think top-shelf guys want to work for Fisher you don't know much about his history.

That's no dig at anyone like Daboll or Nolan at all (and maybe he'll want them) but Fisher isn;t new at this and I trust his decisions.

Wait. Now I'm confused.Whose name belongs on the "I wanted Jeff Fisher for head coach" list?

whatever Todd. oops I mean Kris. dang did it again. I mean phins78

Ummm...I believe Billick has "done" more than Fisher ever will by winning a Super Bowl, if you want to be technical about it....

Exactly! The 3-4 is a copy cat scheme that many teams have tried to implement and has a ton of holes. Consider Miami had a top 10 D this year where New England, New Orleans, Green Bay and Giants are 25th or worse. The difference is they have play makers who create turnovers and pressure the QB while Miami continues to play solid D under Nolan.

I think Nolan is worth keeping and has done a good job but he hasn't done an irreplaceable job and for that reason if he isn't a fit then he isn't a fit.

ARMANDO WHERE ARE YOU???? We need news from a reputable source! Send us a sign!!!

I understand your point, but when you have the 6 ranked DEF which got better as the season went and a easier schedule next year.

Wouldn't keeping the same system and DEF Coord. in place make a little sense?

Come on guys, we did not have a top ten defense. We were twenty fifth against the pass and fifteenth overall. So stop with the Nolan praise. We were average.

Food run and red zone defense though. Third and sixth respectively.

Unfortunately, I think that's a contradiction in terms. The Herald was not the place to get accurate info with the Harbaugh situation last year and they've been consistently behind the curve on this one as well.

I come here for the banter---not for timely or accurate updates. Other sources do that much better.

phins78, kris, and Todd is probly the same person.
none of yall know how to spell genius.

He forgot to change his sign in name...and INCLUDED himself in the list...LOL....

He also mispelled PROBABLY as he was condeming other s spelling.

All of those that want us to trade the world for RG3 I offer this; TCU,Stephen F. Austin,
Rice,Kansas State,Iowa State,Texas A&M OK State,Missouri,Kansas,Oklahoma,Texas Tech and texas. These were the teams he played against in 2011. Not a defense in the group.

Cam Newton played in the SEC. Thats the closes thing to the NFL. RG3 will have a rude awakening.

Maybe I'm misreading your comment @3:32 but that doesn't make sense. THe reason those other teams are doing well with poor defenses (though I wouldn't put the Giants in the same group as the other three) is that they have outstanding offenses. In fact, some of the best offenses ever fielded. They all have great QBing.

I don't think Nolan is necessarily indispensable, but he's a great deal better than most of the other options.

come on fisherrrrrrrrr

i was not condeming spelling. i dont do that. i pointed out that it was misspelled by all three names. screw you 2 odin.

your pissed off because youve looked like a dumb@ss the last 2 days arguing over your stupidity.

You misspelled 'condemning.'

I'm not sure what my opinion of Fisher is. I would like to point out to everyone who brings up the fact that he only had 6 winning seasons out of 17, that his teams only won when they had good QB play.

During most of his tenure w/ Oilers/Titans, he did not get above average play out of his QBs. When he did get good QB play, his teams were at the top of the conference, in the Super Bowl.

..Andy in NJ.. I like the 3-4 scheme. I do think we could make a fairly easy transiton to a 4-3 scheme. We would need some tweeking at the linebacker position, it would also put a lot of pressure on a guy like Odrick(who I think got better every week) and the rest of the interior to play a bit differently. Not just by improving the rush, but their responsibilities in the run game..Different strategy in the 2 schemes interior wise.

I think our young corners would like to play more cover 2..This kind of goes hand and hand with the base 4-3. They van fly around a little more freely, especially in run support. The downside to this is that top tier QB's pick apart the spaces in Cover 2 teams with their eyes closed. Especially if your inside linebackers cannot, or struggle to get proper depth in the middle of the field defending the pass..

Oops, sorry 78, I didn't know you were Search This and Ohio as well.

Just kidding, YES I DID ;)

I understand your point, but when you have the 6 ranked DEF which got better as the season went and a easier schedule next year.

Yes, it makes sense....it's just now how the world turns. I've never seen a franchise tell a HC who they can or cannot bring on as their staff. It is the HC's staff. Like I said, it would be a deal breaker for anyone....unless you were promoting the water boy.

There are only 2 possible ways that Daboll and/or Nolan stay in Miami....1.) Sparano remains head coach (he's obviously gone) 2.) Bowles is named HC and keeps things status quo.

yeah basically my point was Nolan has fielded good but not spectacular game changing defenses. They seem to be very vanilla compared to other 3-4 shcemes.

And you point is well taken those other teams do have elite offenses but they also get take aways as all 4 are in top half of the league in those categories. Nolan has a good group that doesnt get many turnovers some out of his control with all the dropped ints especially in 2010 but just saying he is replaceable.

You misspelled 'condemning.'
Posted by: Ironic | January 11, 2012 at 03:45 PM

You caught that? I'm impressed.

Yeah, it was sort of like the same thing 78 did.......get it? Ya get it?

You know. like he did when he was correcting someone else. Did you see the way he just jumped all over me for doing THE SAME EXACT THING HE DID?

His ego and hipocaZy knows NO BOUNDS!

Pot meet Kettle ;p

Don't pull me back into this Odin, I've stayed out of it. I just like talking Football.

Yes!!!! Were getting Fisher!! WHHOOOOHOOOO. Now we'll be 8 and 8 next season!!!

Spiderman......that'd be perfect if we were in Denver's division! lol

Why is it now day 2 and Odin is still argueing about the same thing he was last night?, Odin can weMove on Now?, What say you About Fisher?

A 4-3 doesn't neccessary favor a cover 2. Fisher plays man defense out of the 4-3.

Please, somebody help me out: What makes Fisher such a big deal? Yeah, better than a Gruden, but what does that really mean? He's NO Bill Belicheat, that I know! Watch!

ohio, just being sarcastic.. until Tom Brady retires we'll be fighting for a wild card.

Odin, did you not see my response to you on the TD catch? I tried to be nice to you. But you got to be an @ss. Thats ok. You don't talk much about football do you. You just sit in here an bully people. What a life you got. Sry, I have a life. I'm not going to stoop as low as you. Loser

...Andy..Good point. I think when I think of 4-3 teams I just automatically equate the secondary to a base cover 2..Your right. Not neccesrilly the case for all squads.

Ohio Dolfan,

I didn't know it was YOU.

As far as pulling anyone into anything, you got the wrong guy.

When I first came on today, Search This and "SOMEBODY" calling themself Ohio were talking about how wrong they were yesterday and trying to blame their ego and matematical problems on me.

I was MERELY responding to the idocaCy ;0

I knew you were kidding Spiderman, I was just joining in cuz Denver won the division at 8-8 :)

Just a thought but just maybe Fisher's agent and Ross are in negotiations and the announcement won't come until Fisher can be announced as HC.

Everyone tied Flynn to Philbin and I was right there doing the same. But how about tying Fisher some of his former players both Corltand Finnegan and Michael Griffin are both UFA and both would be a huge upgrade in the secondary.

Hypothetically, Griffin would finally provide Miami a FS that can play center field.

Finnegan would be the best CB on the team IMO. Finnegan and Vontae would be excellent bump and run corners and Sean Smith could play a role he looks more suited for which is playing a big nickel CB.

Just thought I throw that out there

One thing is for sure: nobody bothers to read anything Cote writes in his clown space. We jump right to Mando's page.

NOTE TO TROLL: This is the 5th time TODAY, that you have brought back up how wrong you were yesterday.

For the sake of the blog, get over it already.

ONE........Ah TWO........Ah Thuh-Reee ;p

Just give me the stache!!

Come on now, All I did was point out a mispelling, JUST LIKE YOU did.

You have a problem with people posting in the same manner you do?

Go figure.

How can Smith play nickel. He's not quick or fast. Its harder to play nickel than a boundary corner.

oh now you want to play your little game. loser

Is there really a press conference scheduled for today?

Good Morning PHINLAND, Watching NFL Channel andthey say Fisher leaning towards the Mighty Air-breathers cause he fears St.Louis is getting ready in the next few years to move...., Interesting that he doesnt want to be involved with another team leaving one city foranother.....

Can somebody go and wake up Armando.

I don't see Smith as a "traditional" nickle.

If you get him in man situations against TE's and Backs maybe.

But I think in todays pass happy offenses, Smith would get eaten alive at nickle.

..Andy..I like your plan. I will add this. Hypothetically. If say Wilson, or perhaps a draft pick could come in and play cover corner. I would like to see Vontae at the Nickel in that package. This is totaly dependant on another guy stepping up to prove he can play man. Watch Green Bay this weekend and see if they move Woodson into the nickel. They did it last year in the playoffs, as did the jets v NE with Revis. It is a copycat league. And the emergence of these slot recievers create a huge mismatch for the offense. These slot guys are good route runners. Against nickel corners who are usually 3-4th on the depth chart. The Nickel guy has so much space he has to cover without the benifit of the sidelines, or help over the top with a better athelete. This is something I talked about in the offseason, and if the Phins could find a suitable cover guy, I think that it would give us a little advantage in Nickel situations.

Games? Gosh No!

I just believe in fighting fire with fire.

It drives egotistical hipocrits absolutely CAR-RAY-ZEE!!!!

don't see Smith as a "traditional" nickle.

thats dumb

I guess comparing Smith's quickness to say Wes Welker is a hard cover but not all slots are smaller faster guys. Some teams use bigger WRs in the slot like Pitt does with Hines Ward or Baltimore with Boldin because those guys go over the middle. More then anything basically just suggesting he could be better as a non-starter with less snaps.

But again is hypothetical. Just threw it out there.

Yes there is a press conference today. Nick Saban wants us to know that No, He is not going to Alabama.

Fisher is flying into Miami now to sign his big deal. He's getting the helicopter and private jet to coach Miami.
