Fisher expected to decide which team he'll coach today

I believe today will be a franchise defining day.

Jeff Fisher, who has been weighing whether to take the head coach job in Miami or St. Louis, is expected to make a decision which team, if either, he would like to work for in 2012. Let me be more clear: I am not reporting Fisher will be named coach of either team today.

I am reporting that, according to one source that thus far has been spot on, the coach is finalizing his choice of teams today. Following that decision, I am supposing here, Fisher will tell his agent which direction he's going and negotiations will get going on a contract and various other details.

I do not know what Fisher's decision will be. But it's obvious that whatever he decides will define the direction of both the Dolphins and Rams for years to come.

The winning team will be regarded to be hiring the hotest, most experienced coach on the market. That team will get a head coach who is going to piece together a star-studded coaching staff. That team's credibility will get an instant boost without even one game under the new coach being played.

The team that loses the Fisher sweepstakes will be regarded as having to hire a secondary choice. That team will be rightly seen as having lost out. That team will have to answer to its fan base questions such as, "What is it about you that was deemed to be lacking in this derby.'

It's entirely possible the team not getting Fisher gets a coach that some day in the future does better work than Fisher. But that won't be the narrative now. The narrative now will be that the losing team, well, lost out.

So how do I know Fisher is scheduled to choose today. Well, since the start of this entire saga I've gotten half a dozen e-mails from people claiming to be close to Fisher or his family or his closest friends. One of these people has provided rock-solid information. And that person tells me today is the day he was told Fisher is making his call.

We'll see what happens. I'd expect something to leak before the end of the day is over and definitely by tomorrow as to where Jeff Fisher is going.

New Coach Wanted,

I am on record with wanting Fisher and I think he would be a good coach but I see you responded to Kristina or whoever's post saying Fisher doesn't develop players.

Are you serious? If that's you argument that won't stick. He has done nothing but develop players in Tennesee over the years. He developed Steve McNair and was even patient enought to not start him immediately coming from the SWAC and running a spread option sort of offense. He developed many other players right away as well Jevon Kearse was Rookie of the Year. Blaine Bishop and Samari Rolle were Pro Bowl players for him and when they left were nothing. Keith Bullock and Derrick Mason made Pro Bowls there, Jon Runyan started there, Michael Roos and Dave Stewart still on the roster made pro bowls under Fisher. Michael Griffin, the list goes on and on.

So not sure where you think he doesn't develop players comes from.

Hey Kris, have a drink on me pal.I love what you've been saying.May I ride shotgun with you?

Crennel is locked up in KC...
Mularkey took the Jags job....
They may not be in DEMAND the way Fisher is....but they made decisuins in a reasonable amout of time....

Can be simply explained by the old phrase "Beggers can't be choosers"

Ohio Dolfan,

I agree. It is hard to compare. Known quantity vs the unknown. All you can do it hope they make the right decision.

As a previous poster mentioned though, given this front office, what are the odds they pick the next "young Shula" rather than the next Sparano or Cameron or Saban.

Scary proposition and a good incentive to go with the known quantity unless you are a risk taker. IMO, the Dolphins have sucked for years now so I say "go for it" and if they screw it up and get Sparano instead of Shula, big deal, we are already used to sucking.

At least then, the value of the franchise will dip so low, Ross will be forced to sell and we get someone with a clue.

Fisher had talent with the Titans/Oiler.And all he got out of it was one SB appearance.I do applaud him for the turbulent times he had to go through and enduring Bud Adams.

I "hate" to be the one to burst your bubble....

but stating FACTS is NOT bashing the man....

Calling him a DRAM QUEEN is...and that how I feel he is acting....

Your hung up on the word "hate"...thats your problem...not mine....

New Coach Wanted,

Your last comment at 1:14pm is SUCH an ignorant comment. But coming from you, I wouldn't expect anything different.

To the Fisher haters: The Bucs are interviewing Wade Phillips and Childress. Jags hired Mularkey. Chiefs took Crennel. Chargers staying with Turner. We're doing it right. Get a grip.

I agree 100 percent. Use facts people when you say you "hate" someone and if you are in favor use FACTS as well.

Kris you need to get a grip and digest that load because Fisher will be Miamis next HC....

It would SO be nice to get the next Sean Peyton.....of course, one has to wonder how much it has to do with the players these guys have when they walk into the coaching job

Mike @ 1:17 -

"A great coach gets great players"

Actually, a great front office gets great players, and the coach coaches them. There are only a handful of coaches in the NFL that are both HC and GM....and it usually doesn't work out so hot.

What is a coach supposed to do when an owner says, "hey coach, I've really taken it in the pocket book the last couple of years, so I'm going to release all of your "franchise" calibre players to get this salary down a bit." "And NO, we can't sign any big names right now because I need to keep those revenues, so don't even ask."

You can't make Steak Au Poivre when all you have is white bread and a can of beanie weenies in the cupboard.

Lombardi just put on NFL.com that Jeff Fisher is new head coach of OUR Miami Dolphins.

That's it in a nutshell, bud. Best guy record-wise out there, the guy that most of the media people feel is the most qualified to coach another NFL team and the fanbase rips him apart. And guys want to criticize Fisher for taking his time with this. If I was Fisher I'd take a LOT more than a few days to make up my mind on coming to Miami.

Let's see.....JJ quit after three years. Saban quit after two......and Parcells quit after three. Geez.....I wonder what it could possibly be about the Miami Dolphins that causes guys to quit after a few years. Let me think about that one for a second.....hmmmmm.....

My god you people are idiots.

Yes, let's hire a run-first, conservative, no-harm-in-punting, play-for-field-goals, perrenniel 8-8, moustached coach.

That will bring the excitement!

If that is the case....Fisher will get my support...as I have stated a few time on this blog.....

But you didn't see that...because you and others like you are to busy looking with a fine-tooth comb for a little chink in my armor....

SO you u take a joking moment that I was having with Odin...and use it out of CONTEXT....

but if that makes you feel better...go ahead....

Here's the new article Robert is talking about

I'm all for taking the chance, good calculated risks on players and coaches. So after Fisher, then assisatant coaches should be the next try.
But I've liked Fisher's style, and his teams ever since he's been in the league. Tough, respectable, and have a legitimate shot most every year to push deep into the post season and comepte for a super-bowl. Yes, he's come up short a lot, but I've always liked what I've seen, and so have a majority of NFL folks. He's popular for a reason, and it's more than his mathmatical statistics.
So yeah, he's #1 chocie to me, and after that, try a newbie.
I'm fine with what we interviewed. Mularkey was the only real brow-raiser. Glad he's gone.

Check the link guys

Ozkar....you can ride with ANYTIME....

Fisher's philosophy has been ground and pound. And he is known for being a deffensive minded type of coach. In other words conservative.

Is he able and willing to change the way Shula did? Quick strike passing attacks are the reality of todays NFL football.

Wonder if Ross/Ireland even asked him his vision for the Dolphins? Probably more like: Jeff, you want to ride around in the hellicopter some more?

Explain Vince Young or the Titans offense.

Calling Jeff Fisher a 'drama Queen' is NOT a fact. It's YOUR opinion. Saying it over and over again, STILL doesn't make it a fact.

I hope you see that....

Craig M thought dante bum culpepper was a better fit for Our Miami Dolphins than Drew Brees!

Robert @ 1:29 -

It only says that it "appears he will be choosing the Dolphins."

The rumors as such for either the Rams or the Dolphins have been abundant. I will wait for the official presser.

Craig M....

Do you UNDERSTAND ENGLISH....and what you posted is PAINFULLY obvious....lol....

Do you ever support your opinions with ANY facts? My statement at 1:14 is in no way ignorant, it may be too complex for you to understand, and I would expect that given the content of most of your posts.

Check out the link buddy. I think you may have to deal with Fisher coming to Miami. I haven't been to heavily involved in the debate today but I for one am excited that Fisher could be in Miami.

Give the guy a chance. He is a proven winner and a proven success in the league. I know 17 years is a long time but circumstances were tough there. Bud Adams was a cheap owner, he went through 2 rebuilding phases there. I could go on and on but just give him a chance.

Let me get one thing straight.....I hate the Rams because ever since they have been here they have only won 1 Super Bowl and their only claim to fame is they won by one yard and trust me that is still all anyone can talk about here.....and secondly, they stood by their team mate that killed a kid while driving drunk.....he got away with it because of who he is and that is not right. For you to say hate well lets see here "hate" is a strong word and I believe your reason is not justified, all because he hasn't won a Super Bowl???? An you say he is a drama queen, look at some of the player he had to work with Vince Young....enough said. so I have my justification for hating the Rams and everything they stand for but at the same time I have enough common sense to know that with Jeff Fisher they would be amazing and help bring back the revenue like they were supposed too. Being a STL resident all they are doing is wasting space downtown with their stadium and it has already been stated that if they kept up with this loosing record they would be gone by 2015. My hatred goes beyond just the team, it is what they were supposed to do for this city.

I probably agree with you on Ireland. I doubt he'd make such a move (to trade up). But, my point is, he's not holding the cards here. He's being directed by Ross, who I believe ONLY retained him because he knew he could FORCE him to do what he (Ross) wants.

Ireland won't get a say in the matter. The Owner wants a franchise QB. All reports say he's directed his GM to make it happen.

I just don't see Ireland, who has no leg to stand on anymore hiding behind Parcells, having the balls to brush aside the Owner's wishes. And I don't see the Owner saying, "sure, if you think this 5th-round guy will be a good QB in a few years, then take him."

Look, this isn't just about winning anymore. It's about FINANCE. MONEY. Winning is secondary (IMO) to Ross' priority, which is to stop the bleeding from his wallet. He knows a sexy QB pick will give him a year or two to figure out the next move if it doesn't work out.

So I see no other choice. Think about how down fans are on this team. People (me included) are even second-guessing the Long pick, a ProBowler EVERY SINGLE YEAR and probably the best player at his position in the league. What do you think they'll do if another OT is picked. After Pouncey last year (another successful pick). Fans don't care. They don't get excited over linemen.

This isn't about forming a winning team, this is about saving a drowning franchise. If Ross thought Ireland wouldn't do as he instructed, we'd have another GM. Ross is calling the shots this Draft, I see an almost ZERO chance a QB isn't selected in the 1st-round (unless they get Manning or do the silly thing and try to get another FA).

At least POTENTIALLY notable QB free agents this year:

Drew Brees

Kyle Orton
Brady Quinn
Matt Flynn
Tyler Palko (R)
Jason Campbell

None of the rest are really even worth looking at in my opinion.

Steve Johnson
Reggie Wayne (old)
Dwayne Bowe
Wes Welker (wouldn't that be funny)
Marques Colston
DeSean Jackson
Vincent Jackson

Greg Olsen
Jermichael Finley
Marcedes Lewis

Craig M....is English your 1st language (i'm being serious)....

cause it seems a lot of things get lost in TRANSLATION many on here post to you....

If its NOT your 1st language...then that would explain alot....

and better enable me to post to you in more direct way....

Funny how a possible relocation to his former home state (CA) would be a detrement. Not sure why that would be, and honestly I thought I read how that would be a PLUS to Fisher? So now it's preventing him going to the Rams?
Well, we'll see soon enough, sometime today, I guess.

I hope that news article is correct. It would be the best news for Miami in a long long time!!!

We might as well go with our secondary choice now, we have a whole damn team of secondary choices!

You can go ahead and take Drew Brees off of your free agent list

count on it

I hate STL because they didn't beat NE in the SB. GRRRRRRRRRRR

New Coach Wanted,

The nice part is your last comment at 1:14pm is there for EVERYONE to see. I'm telling you it's ignorant and condescending. It's what we've come to expect from you.

Other people can form their own opinion based on what you've put down in print.

you forhot the link...

Where are you Mando?!? Now Sports Illustrated is reporting Fisher to the Fins.

For everyone worried about "Ground and pound/defensive minded coach"......what are your thoughts exactly on Jim Harbaugh? Last I checked, most folks here were very much on board and hoped he would be the next Dolphin HC.

Ground and pound....ball control/game manager QB....defense seems to be working for him.

Besides that, when Fisher actually had a QB, they throught the ball....a lot.

Craig M are you currently wearing your culpepper Dolphin jersey?

Pretty funny...

I'll say ti one more time, just for clarity...
if Fisher decides on the FIns, it was because we guarenteed him something big in a personnel move. Assuming QB, but who knows.
Might just be cash.
But, considering QB was his biggest priority, I'd wonder what we had to guarentee him to sway him.
If he doesn't come, then who knows what that means. Probably nothing other than the Rams had more options to play with.

New Coach Wanted,

VY is easy to explain it is widely know he never wanted him in first place. That was Bud Adams pick and Fisher was forced to work with him and then forced to start him.

The Titans offense I know Armando had a blog that said they were a top 5 running teams for X amount of years and that was before the NFL went pass crazy. During that time he developed McNair into a league MVP. Im not sure if they were always top flight their offense but apparantly they were plenty good to have a league MVP and win 13 games twice, Super Bowl appearance.

Not sure what else you want me to say but that's what I present as evidence lol.

If fisher made them promise some personnel moves wouldn't that be good for us?

Oh great, Odin just woke up.........there goes the blog for today

Posted by: Ohio Dolfan | January 11, 2012 at 01:13 PM

You two dolts(if your even two different bloggers, which I doubt), are the dumb a sses that are keeping this going.

You guys start the new day by bringing this up and telling ME-I SHOULD MOVE ON-ROTFLMAO.

I'm sure the irony is lost on you dolts but have at it, keep on embarrassing yourselves. I think it's it's hilarious ;p

ESPN reports Rams interveiwing Chud tomorrow,FOX reports Fischer has made decision, Lombardi states looks like Fischer could be choosing the Fins.

Great we got rid of tony just so we could hire someone that isnt any better! not only that... now the whole team has to go through a transformation.. This really sucks!

I posted the link at 1:32

For the love of GOD Andrea....

I posted that in jest while havin a conversation with ODIN.....it goes back one blog before I posted that...

I neither HATE...nor LOVE Fisher....I don't know the man...I don't ADMIRE him...and I am not a FAN of his work....

If he come to Miami...he will have to EARN my respect by producing in the feild....I am sure me and Fisher will NEVER meet....

I am INDIFFERNT when it come to FISHER...OK....

IF I did HATE FISHER...that would be MY RIGHT.....these are MY FEELINGS...not yours...and I can FEEL about Fisher or anybody else...howeverm I chose to....

Its odd that a person whom I have never MET....is lecturing me about how I should FEEL about somebody.....

TY for stating some of the Fisher facts of why is was who he was. However he is STL's LOL

IMO not much to choose from. Don't even believe Fisher is a good fit and certainly not what Ross claims he wants. Sad lack of choices that is making Fisher more coveted than he merits and will be overpaid for a body of work that in it's entirety is not that notable. Just another miscue to the comedy of errors that is the Miami Dolphins with ring leaders Ross and Ireland (mis) directing this circus. And gosh forbid he selects the Rams, the alternatives Miami has interviewed are even less appealing. Can't say that Ross and Ireland have done much at all to alleviate the fans' lack of confidence and hope.

It is there. Please explain for all why it is ignorant and condescending. You keep offering opinions with no basis, here is your chance to make it all go away. My post is there for all to see. Please explain in detail why you make the assertions you do; don't give me your unsupported opinion, put down some facts on why it is ignorant and condescending.

Oh, I know that, but if I was going to try and throw a crap load of money at someone, it would be him. If they slap a tag on him, I'd give up all the picks I could to try and steal him away.

I know in reality though that he isn't going anywhere.

The NFL network says Fisher will probably take the Miami job because he does not want to be part of a relocation and he like the structure in Miami better. You heard it first here

Just backing you up on VY>
VY was actually the biggest reason Fisher left. Major fights with FO about not wanting to deal with VY, and Fisher threw down the gauntlet, and he was sent packing. Fisher came out the winner, IMO. And had a little time off to pick a better opportunity.

Will Hunting(Odin)! We're all dying for your math lesson! It must have been a shock to learn your posts have no intelligence, humor or entertainment value.

Go ahead, reply. Try to be funny! Be rude! Be Boring! Be dumb! Your trademarks!

You have 2 resident ego maniacs here who just live to tell everyone they're wrong or dumb. Thank god for you guys to set us dumas*es straight!

Good point about Ireland having no balls other then to do whatever it takes to get a franchise QB. I think winning is secondary to Ross and the business is first but that's not entirely a bad thing. Ross knows it's unrealistic to win a Super Bowl every year but a marquee player sells tickets, jersey, etc.
