Fisher expected to decide which team he'll coach today

I believe today will be a franchise defining day.

Jeff Fisher, who has been weighing whether to take the head coach job in Miami or St. Louis, is expected to make a decision which team, if either, he would like to work for in 2012. Let me be more clear: I am not reporting Fisher will be named coach of either team today.

I am reporting that, according to one source that thus far has been spot on, the coach is finalizing his choice of teams today. Following that decision, I am supposing here, Fisher will tell his agent which direction he's going and negotiations will get going on a contract and various other details.

I do not know what Fisher's decision will be. But it's obvious that whatever he decides will define the direction of both the Dolphins and Rams for years to come.

The winning team will be regarded to be hiring the hotest, most experienced coach on the market. That team will get a head coach who is going to piece together a star-studded coaching staff. That team's credibility will get an instant boost without even one game under the new coach being played.

The team that loses the Fisher sweepstakes will be regarded as having to hire a secondary choice. That team will be rightly seen as having lost out. That team will have to answer to its fan base questions such as, "What is it about you that was deemed to be lacking in this derby.'

It's entirely possible the team not getting Fisher gets a coach that some day in the future does better work than Fisher. But that won't be the narrative now. The narrative now will be that the losing team, well, lost out.

So how do I know Fisher is scheduled to choose today. Well, since the start of this entire saga I've gotten half a dozen e-mails from people claiming to be close to Fisher or his family or his closest friends. One of these people has provided rock-solid information. And that person tells me today is the day he was told Fisher is making his call.

We'll see what happens. I'd expect something to leak before the end of the day is over and definitely by tomorrow as to where Jeff Fisher is going.

So I was first to chime in on this blog and said that Fisher was leaning towards Miami, and that still continues to be the trend I've heard two more reports from respectable men in the industry and both say that the word throughout the NFL is that Fisher will be the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins by days end.

Odin.....I am, and always have been my own name and nobody else

Nice Try

phish will get fisher by days end. Now lets all go get a damn snack!

however*

New Coach Wanted,

So you don't think I'm hiding from you or ignoring you, I'll let your last comment at 1:14pm speak for itself. Nothing else needs to be said. That's the kind of guy you are...

One of the things that could draw Fischer here might be, That Ireland got his wings clipped. Fischer wants final say so on personel,( that was reported back when the whole Fischer thing started)So it could be a matter of Ross promising a QB in the draft, or Ireland is gone, or Fischer has final say. and a whole bunch of green stuff!!!

ANYONE IS BETTER THAN SPARANO!I'd take Tim Conway's "Dolf" character.

This will be very surprising to everyone who knows my feelings on the matter (not), but:

I would rather go 6-10 with a Cam Newton-type rookie than go to the Playoffs in 2012 with Matt Moore.

That's just the long and short of the matter. That's where my head's at. And I promise you there are PLENTY of others who feel the exact same way. After 30 years, enough is enough.

Secondly, if we mortgaged our future on said QB in the Draft, and Matt Moore starts in 2012, I won't be upset (at that point I'd be willing to be patient).

If Fisher is the hire, can we just support the guy and move forward.

You can't blame Miami for this hire!

Of course there will be the glass half empty gang!!

JS in LA,

Yeah your right dude. How could I forget and leave that out. Thanks for the exclamation point

OK guys. Work calls.

I'll be back to listen to the snivelling when the Fisher announcement is made. It'll be good to hear from all the guys who said 'Fisher would never want to work with Ireland'. I'm sure they will all be out, clearly identifying themselves.

Cheers....

On Sunday, Fox’s Jay Glazer said Fisher’s choice would be the Rams; later Sunday night, Peter King pointed out that if it came down to money, the Dolphins would be the winner. Indeed, when Fisher was in St. Louis last week, he left on Southwest Airlines. In Miami, he flew about on owner Stephen Ross’ chopper.

wrong nutz, fisher brings us respect again. he will turn this thing around right away. and how great is it to see sparano going to the jets, that offense will be awful

respect doesn't win games, personal, training and implementation of your plan does. fisher doesn't fit the players we currently have. so unless he has learned to be flexible during his year off we are going to have to draft, trade, sign and dump players to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. look at the struggles of the pats defense. that's what they tried to do in one season with extremely poor results. we don't have tom brady, wes welker and 2 elite TE's to make up for a big drop in defense. i hope that fisher goes to the rams and we hire an offensive minded head coach. my guy would be the packers OC. make him head coach. keep nolan and his defense. bring in an OC from the green bay staff and sign matt flynn to compete with moore. dump henne. keep devlin for a developmental QB. draft the big RT from iowa. that gives us bookend tackles and a great center. jerry at RG, incognito at LG. that line can open holes and grind down defenses and keep our QB on his feet. get the best possible TE in round 2 or 3. add depth at safety and get a pass rushing OLB. find some gems in FA and draft speed.

NFL.com.....Fisher likely to choose Miami, source says he is more suited to the structure in Miami than St. Louis and that he doesn't want to be involved in a team transfer. St. Louis rumored to be going back to LA eventually!

Reported by Michael Lombardi of NFL Network at 1:21 P.M.

AndyNJ,

With regards to Fisher, I sympathize, it must have sucked to have Vince Young forced on you when he was ROY and ProBowl and single-handedly saved your season multiple times despite you (Fisher) doing your best to get rid of him.

But that is the past...

If the reports are true, I now know the single biggest reason we don't want Fisher. If he actually said he liked the structure in Miami better than in St. Louis (after criticizing the structure in Miami), he lacks judgment.

I don't know if there is a single blogger here that can claim he loves Ross AND Ireland and the advising (meddling) of Peterson and Mangini.

Just heard on ESPN radio Fisher to Dolphins. Press conference scheduled later on today.

A buddy of mine, a scout for the Pats, says Fisher to Miami. I'll believe it when I hear/see it, but I share that tidbit with my fellow phans.

Breaking news!!! Fisher agrees to a 4 year 10 million contract with Dolphins!!!

Although I love that sources are saying Fisher is coming here,
Sources were also sure he wasn't, a day ago.
I'm not buying squat until he gets on the Aqua-Chopper (or whatever it got named) and shakes hands with Ireland.
But, darnit, I'm still glued to the darned news wire anyway. Sucker.

If Fisher does end up in Miami, Mike Nolan is history. Don't be shocked if Gregg Williams is our new DC. Him and Fisher are very close.

LOL @ Boulder....

Big question will be does he keep Daboll as our OC? Daboll deserves another shot.

CraigM,

I expected as much. Fire off an opinion and insult and when asked to support it, you run away.

No worries, you will flip-flop and next week say you like me and proclaim how my posts shed a little light on the darkness you find yourself mired in.

No need to thank me. I like to help people.

until i see it in ESPN I will believe it....but sources are not always right

jaison,

Miami unlike New England has defensive line depth and a pass rusher in Cam Wake who has more sacks in the 3 point stance then he does standing up in his career.

Kendall Langford is a 3-4 DE and is a FA so that's a scratch. Paul Soliai would be a nice run stuffer in a 4-3 but if my memory serves me right Fisher likes more athletic DTs which Miami does have in Starks and Odrick. So Miami would still need another rusher opposite Wake but they need that even if they stay in a 3-4.

Dansby has played in both schemes before as a both a MLB and OLB. Burnett always has played in a 3-4 and he played well late but he is not irreplaceable if he doesn't fit as 4-3 OLB.

Just some thoughts on 4-3 switch.

Some guys still reaching for reasons for hating on Fisher, some maybe outting themselves as rooting for failure, wow.

And does this mean the end for Ireland? Why did Peterson interview Fisher and not Ireland? Lots of questions will be answered soon.

Well, If it becomes true I will support. Not my first choice, but I have no say so anyway, well I do, it just does not count..lol..The one thing that bothers me is the whole changing of staff, its like rebuilding all over again..oh well, hope for the best..

Ohio, I think Will Hunting accused me of being you too. The other day Craig accused me of being yesterday & dying.

Funny, when challeneged on their shallow opinions or lack of math skills, your someone else out to get them. Like they can't imagine how someone could disagree with them.

Some pppl have an ego problem!

You have 2 resident ego maniacs here who just live to tell everyone they're wrong or dumb. Thank god for you guys to set us dumas*es straight!

Now your catching on. Like I said, wouldn't it have been a lot easier just admitting you were wrong.

I really didn't even care how wrong you two were. You guys engaged me and tried to say I was wrong and that 2 + 1 = 2. I mean, I do know how to count to Thuh-Ree!

Once you tried to push your faulty math on me......well......I felt compelled to respond.

No offense taken, I hope you've learned your lessons and graduate the first grade.

Good Luck ;)

Jerome Simpson's TD Flip is a High Light reel for the ages!

Andera should you be in the kitchen..

Again we're going to go with the hottest name on the market. Hope this time we get it right. We're 0 for 3.

How did Jerome Simpson not get suspended? :)

CraigM,
Nope, if Fischer is hired I will be the first to say it now, "I said Fischer would never work with ireland".

New Coach Wanted,

Ok I counter your VY ROY and Pro Bowl nod which was BS with your argument earlier saying he doesn't develop players. He apparantly did so in spite of VY.

A well respected NFL Head Coach on the Competition Committee who has 6 playoff appearances and a Super Bowl appearance, and you say lacks judgement? I gotta disagree. He seems to have done well for himself in his profession. He is well accomplished.

I hope allthese reports/rumors are true. It would be the best news for the Dolphins and best coaching hire since Shula. Yes, even better than Johnson.

Jeremy Marks-Peltz As a member of @ESPN760, I would like to make it clear that ESPN Radio DID NOT report Jeff Fisher to the #Dolphins

Dolphin Montreal,

Daboll had his moments this year. He as much as Sparano should be given credit for Reggie Bush's career season. Over a 1000 yards and 5 per carry is telling me he was calling something right. Matt Moore of all people played well down the stretch too.

I am indifferent on that one. If he stays cool but if not then I'm fine with that too.

Craig M....

What is wrong with the post @ 1:14....

The last line was a bit strong.....but what offended you so much.....

CraigM,
Nope, if Fischer is hired I will be the first to say it now, "I said Fischer would never work with ireland".

Posted by: finfaneurope | January 11, 2012 at 02:03 PM

I said that too. I also posted yesterday that I hoped he'd take the job anyway.

Fisher isn't the consensus best option but he's respected & knows what he's doing. More so than a 1st time coordinator I'd guess.

Once Ross sees the intelligence gap between him & Ireland, hopefully Ross realizes Irelands out of his league. This is my hope atleast!

DC

I completely understand your comment about not choosing Moore even if we go to the playoffs with him and would rather have a Cam Newton and go 6-10, but what if that 6-10 or 8-8 continued for 3 years?

It is just hard for me to ever argue with a teams decisions if they make it to the playoffs, I LOVE when Miami goes to the playoffs

Is Fisher is the man, I hope he can keep these coordinators!

The Dolphins are not far away. A couple of key pieces will do it.

Still waiting for the official presser, but this is sounding more and more credible with multiple sources jumping in.

Fisher to Miami

Fisher won't solve all the problems but he's a start. At least we k ow we have a guy that can coach players up and not cost us any games with stupidity.

Sure he's a defensive guy but he always hired good and string offensive Co ordinaries and let them work.

Trade up for rg3 and an awesome offseason is complete.

AndyNJ, I'd like to see what Daboll can do with a little bit more firepower on offense. Let's face it, aside from Marshall and Bush, our offense sucks.

Apparently the Rams are interviewing Chudzinski today.

For real. Best TD by a WR ever. Will more players try? I think they will. Thats what I love about the NFL. It never gets old.

New Coach and Europe....

I have said the same thing...IF Fisher is named..then he gets my support.....

But MANY here...WANT everything to be BLACK and WHITE....

They only read what they want to see....and if you post something that doesn't ALIGN with their NARROW VIEW of you THEY believe you to be...they either glance over it or IGNORE it altogether......

I AM NOT a Fisher fan....

But If named...He gets My support.....

What Choice do I have.....

I'm listening to ESPN radio now (after someone mentioned it) and not hearing any Fisher news yet.
I'm trying like heck not to buy this until it's really confirmed.
If you folks are trying to be cute by reporting fake news, then shame on you. I've had enough dreams crushed this year.

jaison - 4-3 switch is easier than keeping our current 3-4. If we were to keep the 3-4, we would have even more holes to fill.

JS in LA...thats Funny....

JS in LA........the NFL.com article is real, but so far that is the only thing I have seen or heard.

Dolphin Montreal,

Maybe so. If getting Fisher means sacrificing Nolan and Daboll Im fine with it. If he feels they are a fit and keeps them Im good with that as well.

Nolan I don't see being a fit because of his 3-4 background.

Daboll seemed to have very little to work with in both stints in Miami and Cleveland but he had similar results he had a suprise 1000 yard rusher in Peyton Hillis and Reggie Bush and also had 2 QB play solid in Colt McCoy as a rookie and Matt Moore. So if he sticks that works with me.

If Fisher is Our third big name coach We've landed since Our patriarch left then IT'S time that Miami Dolphins fans put their name on it.
If you consider yourself a true Dolphan and are pleased with Jeff Fisher being Our new head coach the please sign below.

Dude, now you're just being ridiculous. I don't look for anyone to agree with me. It wasn't a popularity contest. It wasn't ego-Sheesh. It was simple math.

You two both said 2 + 1 = 2. Yet, we ALL know it equals Thu-Reee!

It's not open for debate Maynard, it's simple math. You guys failed forward fast(snicker, snicker), get OVER IT already ;)

A ONE peanut butter cup..........A TWO peanut butter cups.........A Thuh-Ree peanut butter cups.............

If they keep Daboll. And get Hillis for the low-low. I'd be ok with that.

I'm listening to ESPN radio now (after someone mentioned it) and not hearing any Fisher news yet.

It's a rumor article by Lombardi on NFL network saying it "looks" like Miami. Nothing official.

Thanks Kris and Ohio,
Yeah I read the article (yet another "source" opinion.)
But the radio news stuff, I'm questioning. Listening now, so if I hear it I'll pass it on.

ESPN radio said "According to multiple sources", Fisher to Dolphins. Press conference could be scheduled no later than today. It looks to me that it's pretty much a done deal. I want to know what's going to happen with Ireland.
