Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

PICK ZIMMER!

Probably a blessing in disguise. Now we just need to find a way to get rid of Ireland! Ross has to realize that Ireland has likely cost us the hiring of Harbaugh and now Fisher. No one is going to work with this clown!

Dolphins need to interview Moss & Chud ASAP!

IRELAND has to be fired!!!! no coach wants to work under that idiot.

Brian Billick

Duh. Any idiot couldve guessed this. They need to hire someone not yet interviewed so they could say this was a blessing in disguise and move forward

We have a home game against the Rams this year...date is not set, but home game for sure.

Let's beat the crap out of the Rams and rub it in Fisher's nose.

My obsession for the Dolphins is slowly dying.

What does Ireland have over Ross?

Best news I've heard since Sparano got fired. Watch Fisher go nowhere with the Rams.

I must say it has to be both and insult, and a lesson to Ross losing out to two coaches in a row now. Money can't buy you everything. Money can't buy you class.

His love affair with Ireland may be seeing its first crack.

Adam Schefter reporting Fisher to Rams due to structural disagreement. Ross would not give Fisher more power than Ireland!

AMAZINGLY STUPID.

When is Ross going to see Ireland is destroying this franchise!

We lost out to the ST LOUIS RAMS! Are you kidding me?!

Fisher is smart. Ross doesn't know sh** about football and Ireland is clueless. Don't blame him.

Well, put this one on the Owner. He chose Ireland over Fisher.

I'd like to hear Craig's opinion over that. Personally, I'd go with Fisher's talent experience over Ireland's any day.

But I know Craig you were a Fisher fan and I think also an Ireland fan. So, do you agree with the Owner, or do you think he effed up?

Has Ireland done enough here in 4 years to deserve such deference from the Owner? I think not, but putting that out there for discussion.

Who would of thought we'd miss H.Wayne? LOL!!

So glad thats over with! NExt??

Why oh why would Ross be loyal to Jeff Ireland? What does he see in someone some pompous and arrogant!! Miami is OFFICIALLY a disgrace! Im done with these clowns. Cam Newton and Carolina here I come!

I don't blame fisher. I think this is on the fact that Ireland is incompetent, st Louis has Sam Bradford, has a much easier division, and his agents son works there. We at least now have a legitimate shot at rg3.

IRELAND IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR US. HE IS A POMPOUS ASS. ROSS IS A CLOSE SECOND.

Also, to the joker earlier who said Miami wasn't waiting around for the Fisher decision...WRONG!

Now we hear they're expanding their pool of candidates. We've been waiting for 4 days, and ONE guy got interviewed (Zimmer). Why couldn't they be interviewing these other candidates in the meantime? So they could pivot quickly to their 2nd option, before they go somewhere else.

Like much of the last few decades, the top of this organization keeps making mistake after mistake. Doesn't bring confidence to the fan base OR the NFL community.

Well, lets see what direction we head now. Ross, blew this one too! Considering thats who he wanted (that was after Cowher, Gruden) as his prize. Im not surprised, I questioned him coming here with Ireland on board to begin with, however the past few days started thinking I had been wrong. So much for thinking. By the way, he was not my first choice. Lets move on to Chud, Moss,we will probably end up with Bowles. Maybe thats not a bad thing. But outside of Miami this makes this Franchise look bad.

we didnt have a PLAN B?????? figures!

Inimounts, I agree, it's much easier winning that division than ours. For that reason alone I probably would have chosen the Rams myself.

Im sick of this Sh@t no doubt. Trade up for RG3 to revive this depressed fanbase. But why is it people hate Ireland so badly? This last draft was pretty good, and without Parcells he has done very little to make me upset. Is it over the Dez Bryant mom thing? Some of you see him as racist or what?

Fisher in complete control would have been a bad situation. He's a football coach, not a personnel guy.

Ross made the right decision.

This is hilarious. Everyone jumped all over Ross because he didn't show loyalty to Sparano. Now everyone jumps on him because he showed loyalty to Ireland. Everyone jumped on the Dolphins for giving complete control Coach A. Now everyone jumps on them for not giving complete control to Coach B.

The Dolphins will be fine and will be better than they would have been with Fisher.

greg, plan B was to hire Sparano back (since he's still on the payroll anyway). But Jets blew that up in Ross' face.

Nolan up for Falcons DC.

I heard Plan C was some H.S. Coach in the Miami-Dade area.

Well guys I was gone for the day and now I'm home sweet home. I checked the blog and what do I see that Fisher is choosing the St. Louis Rams over the Miami Dolphins, wow!

I read on ESPN because Ross wouldn't give Fisher say over Ireland, wow!

I was a Fisher supporter but it's not like we missed out on Cowher or Gruden. Fisher was a very good coach who would have given this classless outfit a touch of class and professionalism now we continue to be the running joke of the NFL.

Thanks, a lot Ross! You have brought this franchise to an ALL TIME low!

step back, ross is very loyal to Jeff. Now if he does not fix this problem quickly, the loyalty to the team(by the fans) will go down the drain. I am willing to go a few more years as I think Fisher would have needed that time to readjust the schemes etc. But after that I am done!

Coach A never had control, where did you get that from?

Look on the bright side...we have retained a "star" general manager!

We say the foundation is good...+ Ireland
Matt Moore pickup...+ Ireland
Reggie Bush...+ Ireland
Defensive personnel...+ Ireland
trade for Marshall...+ Ireland

wtf gives with the Ireland hatred? I think its making Dolphin fans look lame and uneducated to the rest of the NFL fans

DC, the front office is a mess;how do we recover? cant get worse than ross/ireland.

The real issue right now isn't the next coach. There are plenty of good options out there.

The real issue now is, how will Ireland do with the next draft. That will be the make or break factor in whether or not it was wise to keep him. Between the new picks next draft, and seeing this years rookies in their second year, is what will determine his fate beyond 2012.

Why were we waiting on Fisher's decision if they were not going to give him controll? Why are we not negotiating with someone else or interviewing other potential coaches? Why not give Hue Jackson a call?

Ireland must have some juicy pics somewhere.

Better off without you, Fisher! Power hungry coaches like Fisher and Hue Jackson NEVER succeed

Why is Ireland so in competant? Lets look at THIS YEARS DRAFT. I beleive 5 out of 7 made the final roster and contributed. So Ireland didnt get a quarterback, but neither has anyone else since 1999. His free agents were decent, Jason Taylor back again, Matt Moore, Reggie Bush, Brunett, his biggest bust was the turnstyle mark columbo.

But again the biggest thing was a QB but no one else has done any better in the time since Marino left

I wanted fisher, and im disapointed in the direction this team has gone, but its more ownership then GM

DC,

I would given Fisher final say in personnel matters over Ireland....no question. That's not even an issue as far as I'm concerned. I don't blame Fisher for not taking the job and going to St. Louis. He didn't want to put himself in the same situation he was in with the Titans, where a guy like Young was forced on him. I don't blame him at all.

To me this was a huge mistake by Ross. He will sink and die with Ireland and that's a mistake. Not sure what the plan B is, but to me it's a big dropoff. I've always liked Mike Zimmer but to me he's not nearly the none commodity or in the same class as Fisher.

Botched job by Ross...

Aisle
That actually was damn funny

Ross is sticking by Ireland because of Peterson.

losing fisher is not a loss..he's not that young anyways.

Ireland wants zimmer cause he's another cowboy a puppet for him..i really think ross is scared of Ireland and gets bullied by him..get ready 4 another koa misi in the second round and one more year of the same stuff than ross will have to fire him ..oh well..i still didn't like fisher anyway he's a boring coach.

cavemanna is correct

I say draft a Michigan QB named Brady in the 6th round of the draft and it doesn't matter who the coach is.

This is one of the best days in Dolphins History. Sorry Armando,You may have seen this as a set back, but in reality the only setback is the fact we still have to contend with Jeff Ireland. Philbin was always my first choice and with him would come a proven system.

YEAHHHHH DOLPHINS!!!!

Get ready for some no name hire fellas!

Maybe Armando's favorite name Winston Moss who is part of a defense that gave up the SECOND most yards in the history of the NFL will be Miami's top choice! I don't wanna hear it's the offenses fault to give up the second most yards in NFL history is inexcusable! I don't want Darren Perry, Winston Moss even mentioned because none of us never even heard of them as possible candidates until Mando went there.

Winston Moss hahaha. Season ticket holders are already deciding to do with their extra money!

Marty Schottenheimer and keeping the coaching staff makes sense. Get it done Ross!!

We blew another one. Was that big win over buffalo worth it now?? We are doomed to years of mediocrity. Ireland sucks by the way. Let's face it, we are to the league now what the saints were in the 70's.

drogs is correct

Well Good news for Kris, he will not need to have to figure out how to like Fisher after all of this :)

To be honest I'm glad its over though, this had gone too far. And I don't think it hurts us as bad as Mando seems to be making it out to be.

Let's let this thing play out.

This is ludicrous. Ireland over Fisher?! Thats how you know its time to hang up your Dolphin Jerseys and find another team to root for, at least until Ross sells the team. Worst owner than Snyder and thats saying a lot. Disappointed and appalled... Gone!

I can live with Ireland if we land Moss or Chud.

If we don't even interview either of those two, I will lose whatever minimal respect I have for Ross at the moment as an owner of a proud franchise.

This shows have far the FINS have sunk. To have the St. Louis Rams as a more desired destination. FIRE IRELAND!!! Can Ross fire himself???

Cavemanna, ur an idiot. Take all the people we have drafted with Ireland. It's amazing how many are not on the team or have busted. Culumbo, gibril Wilson, giving soliai ten more million than he's worth, almost every draft pick he's ever made : -Ireland

amsmith965 is incorrect. we go 12-4 next year, as we almost did this year, either with Henne or Moore.

This is both sad and embarrassing. Sad as to how far this franchise has sunk in the past 15 years or so and embarrassing to the point that the St. Louis Rams are the preferred destination of a so called high profile coach. I recall Armando reporting mid-season that Ross's intentions were to acquire both a high profile head coach and a star QB. How's that working out? Pathetic.

Armando What role did Carl Peterson play in this again? I'm sure he advised Ross that he would have to give Fisher personnel power over Ireland. No? If we did lose out for that reason this regime is really effing stupid...What a joke...speechless really...

Brian Billick.....No brainer!!!!!

Dont really care about fisher. Just cant believe we lost out to the rams. What a sad day. Ross is the laughing stock of all owners and he needs to keep his love affair with ireland behind closed doors and focus on football. Ireland must have some dirt, or some pictures of ross he is holding over his head.ross....please sell the dolphins to an owner who knows something about football. please? do us all a favor and leave town, and take ireland with you.

Mind-boggling to realize how far this franchise has sunk into the toilet. Whatever, I am checking out emotionally for a while from them. Can't waste my sports fandom on a celebrity-obsessed owner, a GM who asks players if their mothers are prostitutes, an organization made up of baseball exec's and carpet-baggers from the northeast who don't have any understanding about the south Florida community/sports fans. I'm done.

We say the foundation is good...+ Ireland
Matt Moore pickup...+ Ireland
Reggie Bush...+ Ireland
Defensive personnel...+ Ireland
trade for Marshall...+ Ireland
Odrick solid...+ Ireland
C Clay solid...+ Ireland
not trading for Orton...+ Ireland

wtf gives with the Ireland hatred? I think its making Dolphin fans look lame and uneducated to the rest of the NFL fans

Ireland and Ross are two dummies!!! They where willing to pay Jeff Fisher 7 Mil but doesn't want to give him control of personel, two idiots!!!
