Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

He's already playing defensive line.

How bout Rich Kotite?

Wow, listen you yourselves. Do you all realize that Fisher does not have a vaggina? You will be embarrassed about all this whining after watching the Rams for two years.

Pretty sure Mike Sherman coached Texas A&M, not Texas Tech.

Ireland is not as bad as he is made out to be. But if he is, those that think ROSS has some undying loyalty to him, are badly mistaken. ROSS did not hire Ireland. Parcells did, BEFORE Ross bought the team. So maybe, just Maybe, Ross see's something, you pessimistic always fans dont! ROSS did oblige yall complainers by firing Sparano. ROSS did oblige you by going after a coach that only had 6 winning seasons out of 16, willing to pay him like BELECHIC, just so You complaining fans can feel good! Try this, Breathe, relax, it will all work out!

You all have it wrong!!!

This again comes down to the Harbaugh episode last year and how Ross looked to back door then Coach Tony Sparano.

Ross has publically endorsed Ireland all along with this coach search. How would it have looked if he now takes away Ireland’s power in favor of a new coach? Had he taken away Irelands power it would have showed that Ross has no allegiance to anyone.

Although it sucks that the Dolphins lost out to the Rams, I think it was the right choice to not give in to the power structure Fisher needed to become the Dolphins coach. Ross needed to stand his ground to gain credibility within the NFL. We all may not like it but it’s on to another coach.

Finally, let’s not forget about when we beat out Atlanta for Bill Parcells. Who was the real winner?

With a decent draft and free agency, this team can be in the playoffs this year.

Odin.....

Not u 2.....

Oh LORD.....

Cry me a river......

Its not so bad. Ireland will find us another Pat White!! YIKES!!

RR,
Be careful what you wish for.
None of coaches in the NFL are as smart as the people in this blog I get that. The problem is that those coaches do get to make the personnel decisions and the people in this blog do not.
How does that affect us?
Let's say we were to a hire a coach from staff of NE or GB or Pitt or NYJ.
And that coached looked at all of the QB's available that would play for this team. And came to the conclusion that Henne was the best available and put the franchise tag on him. The reason he concluded that Henne was the best available was based on how Henne played against his team in that game.
For example no one on the GB staff is as smart as you are. So if the coach says "Chad Henne beat us the year we won the Super Bowl, from the sideline he looked like a real good QB", and does not call to consult you, you could end up with Henne for 10 more years.

Hip Hip Hooooray ! Hip Hip HOooOOOOray !!

Dear Mr. Salguero

Can the Dolphins please hire the following

Marty Schottenheimer
joe paterno
Dan Henning

Experiance and cunning before youth and enthusiasm.

GUYS, FISHERS MOMMA WAS A HOOKA!!

Ozkar......
looks like I won't have to sign my name to anything......whew......

that Guy,

your comments are as boring as the Dolphins.
If you cannot recognize that Ireland sucks in the same way as Sparano, you should be a supporter of the revolting jets or the infamous patriots.
Shula did a great job ! You're simply blind. I rather see thousend of times a Shula team without a SB championship that this cartoon of a team.
You had a lobotomy or what pal ? !

Jeff Fisher must be a racist because if the he chose the StL over Miami, for less money, then it can only be because there are are waaay more white people in St Louis than there are here.

The ONLY way us Fans have to help our Team is to be supportive of It. Critical, we might be, but only in the direction of helping our Team. However, if out of spite that things did not work out as you would have wanted to, you make derisive comments of It, it's better that you look for another Team to support, for, you're hurting your Team.

New Jets OC Sparano asked Rex Ryan id he could bring in Chad Pennington to help develop Sanchez and Ryan fired him.

The real question to be asked is whether or not Ireland was the deal breaker. Many assumptions about that, but no facts.

DC- My issue with your math is why would we draft a first round QB while we had Marino at the helm you nitwit!!!!!

Tony Sparano gets the last laugh...

Fins would not clearly comply with Fisher's requests. Fins made an offer he could refuse.

The Jests are laughing at us...

SoCalphinsfan

Wikipedia perhaps forgot to tell that Ireland was maybe an abused child. That's why he was so concerned to know if Bryan's mother was a prostitute.
Gizz, what a morron Ireland is.
Sparano should had taken him in his suitcase to New Jersey !

Didn't DB YG Fool provide us with several insightful posts as to why Fisher would be a fin?

Tickets, get your tickets!

It's time to come on out and show your support for the Miami Micks! Led by our all time favorites Jeff "The Mick" Ireland!

AwwwwwwwwwwwwwwRiiiiiiiight Miami Micks!!!!

I can't wait to get the first pick of the 2013 draft!

God, I hope the Mayans are wrong about that apocolypse crap. Who cares about the Mayans, we're the new Fighting Irish Micks!!!!

Go Jeffy!!!!

Geez, you let that one through and not the others?

So I can make racial slurs against the Honky's but that's it?

Interesrting bunch of racist shyt!

No Craig we don't believe one of these assistants will lead the turn around...they will lead the reach around..after all...it's how Ireland kept HIS job...just sayin'

Armando, will you tell folks that Marty is not too old and senile. He's very sane and respected around the league. He's the coach for coaches. And loved by his players. The right person for the job.

I don't know if he had any kind of fallout with Peterson or Ross. But IMO, between him and Billick. He would be more desearving to coach the Phins.

Just think...

In these very short years Ross and his GM Jeff "THE SCOUT" Ireland who BTW, Ross inherited from Hyzengia, has taken this franchise into the lowest mot you could find.

Hyzengia.. YOU SUCK for selling the team to that ass hole Ross.

I cant blame you for hiring Tuna as you didn't know that the Tuna was going to bring in his baby helpers.

ROSS... YOU ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE NFL..

BUT.. It's YOUR Team so hope that you are ok with it. Just remember, WE THE PEOPLE can walk with our feet and watch you see those millions vanish in seats and concessions and rights.

I think this blew up because Fisher knew Ross wanted to trade away the whole draft in order to move up and get his franchise QB and Fisher didn't want that.

First. Good riddance Fishstache. Enjoy your control of the Rams. We'll follow the twilight of your career with interest.

Second. Lay off Ireland, kiddies, until you can name a personnel guy doing a better job in the league right now. You can't. There are a limited number of picks and free agency acquisitions, and Ireland has done a better job than anybody else out there. There are some guys he passed on that turned out to be phenomenal stars. But that doesn't make him an idiot. Every other team before us passed on them too. Be realistic and show me some complete drafts from our approximate draft position or below that you consider superior. Otherwise, the "ireland sucks" mantra seems juvenile, and uninformed.

PS

Ross.. You can take YOUR stinking Team to LA as Miami hates YOU.

You are the most hated person in Fla.

Dear Mr. Salguero

In spite of our selfs (John Prine)

Stohen Ross :

Jeff Ireland don't like his eggs all runny
He thinks crossin' his legs is funny

He looks down his nose at money
He gets it on like the easter bunny

He's my GM I'm his Boss
I'm never gonna let him go

Jeff Ireland :

He ain't got laid in a month of sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies

He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen

He's my Boss and I'm his GM
Never gonna let him go

Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland :

In spite of ourselves We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow

Against all odds Miami Dolphin fans, we're the big door prize

We're gonna spite our noses right off of our faces

There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

Stephen Ross :

Jeff Ireland thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make him horny

He likes ketchup on his scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when he shaves his legs

He takes a lickin' And keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let him go.

Jeff Ireland :

He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a wacked out werido and a celebrity junkie

Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon

He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go

Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland :

In spite of ourselves We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow

Against all odds Honey, we're the big door prize

We're gonna spite our noses Right off of our faces

There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

Relax. You of all people should see this is part of the master plan to lure Cowher in.

We suck!!! We suck!!! At least we can look forward to having a top 5 pick for that dumba$$ Ireland to screw up for the next 10 years. I quit. I'm buying a saints jersey.

with ireland and ross firmly holding hands we are doomed. we got to wait it out. if the stadium is empty ross could wake up.

Sometimes God helps you manage. Some of the Dolphin's best decisions were choices that fell in their lap.

Good luck Fisher and thanks for keeping the memories short.

Instead of interviewing for a head coach, we should be interviewing for a guardian for Ross. He is obviously incompetent.

After 46 years of following the Dolphins, I am done.

Amen. Gussioto. Call me when they sell the team

DA,

LOL.. I know.. Just doing my part to further enable all the hysterical folks I hope nobody decides to jump from a plane over this.

I never wanted Fisher from the beginning. Cowher's my guy.

how can we have a FO that is this clueless?????

We are never getting cowher. Not with that dumba$$ Ireland here. Dream on

Just glad to see we are cleaning house with our cry baby crap fickle fan base too. Don't let the door hit you on the @ss on the way out!!! I hear the Rams and Jags are looking for some unintelligent, whiney punks to "root" for them. So see your douches on the other side of the field next year. Personally I'm taking names and calling out you beeetches next year. Adios.

I urge all season ticket owners NOT to renew their season tickets. Somehow we have to force Ross to sell this team. He has destroyed the franchise. Maybe an empty stadium every Sunday will force him to sell. By keeping Ireland He is not acting in the best interest of the team. Joe Robbie must be turning in his grave. Iwill not attend another Fins game or buy any merchandise til Ross is gone

True dat Carl!

DA,

Here is an article fresh off the presses (yesterday). I'm still optimistic but have to admit I have reduced the number down to 30% he will come out.

See below.

Bill Cowher has turned down at least three NFL teams

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2012/01/bill-cowher-has-turned-down-at-least-three-nfl-teams/1?csp=34sports&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UsatodaycomNf

let's not kid ourselfs,if Mike Mcarthey was coaching the colts this year would he suck,if Sean Peyton was coaching the rams would he suck until we get that franchise QB whoever coaches is gona suck too.Do whatever it takes to get RG3

Know I know for sure, mr. Ireland is bangging mr. Ross

You keep hosting your Mitt Romney fundraisers and running this franchise into the ground, Stephen Ross.

I'm finding another hobby on Fall Sundays.

DA,

For some reason the link did not work so I am pasting the article below from USA today (yesterday). lol

At least three NFL teams have called Bill Cowher with coaching offers this season, but he sounds like a man who has little interest in leaving the comfort of his chair at CBS for the harsh realities of the sideline.

Cower was on the Dan Patrick Show today and, with Bonnie Bernstein subbing as host, was asked whether his coaching offers were over or under two.

Cowher laughed, then said, "Oh, it's over," while not specifying which teams were interested.

As for coming back after a five-season hiatus from the coaching ranks as an analyst for CBS, Cowher added:

"I don't know if I've ever been that ready, honestly . . . Let me tell you, if there's any doubt, then there's no doubt you're not ready to come back. You have to be all in to take that job."

Cowher acknowledged missing some aspects of his 15-year tenure as head coach of the Steelers, but said:

"That's all I did my whole life. Right now I have a chance to have an offseason, a chance to do some traveling and do some things I've never had a chance to do before, and to be honest with you I'm enjoying that . . .

"But with CBS I'm still able to be part of the game, watching the game, watch it evolve, still be somewhat on the inside, but it's not the all-encompassing part of it."

And as an analyst, Cowher said, "You feel a lot better on Mondays."

what a bunch of clowns running this team! cant blame fisher for not wanting to work for that idiot Ireland...

Tony Sparano said he wants the Jets offense to be explosive and physical. "I want them to fight to get down to the redzone and then we'll kick a fieldgoal. Fist pumps are going to happen here!"

I wonder how much Eli's eliteness has to do with his last name alone.

If Peyton didn't screw Indy over, we wouldn't even be talking about Eli right now.

Good , i didnt like Fisher anyway , average coach. But we still need to get rid of Ireland , he is a fungus eating away at this team. The reason Fisher didnt want to coach here is Ireland was in the way. I say we get rid of him asap. Get Chud down before someone else does . I really think he is the up and coming young minds ,lots of energy. If not him i would go with Philbin or maybe Kirby Smart the defensive cordinator for Alabama . What a shut down defense.

NYG

Thanks. Yeah, that fits with what I've thought all along...

"if there's any doubt, then there's no doubt you're not ready to come back. "

I told you fools Fisher wasn't going to work for that numbskull Ireland. I don't know what to say anymore about this team that hasn't already been said except this.

Jeff must give damn good BJ's.

@Darryll

If the STATS say a camaro is safer than a mustang then why would you go with the mustang if your goal is to purchase a safe car?

You don't know what you're talking about!

In a blind draft based on STATS, EVERY GM IN THE LEAGUE WOULD GO WITH THE BEST STATS.

..Soiled Bottom..Good choice.(John Prine)

That guy..Good post. I don't mind long posts with good content. You offered up some good points in the defense of Ireland. Fact is we are stuck with him now.

The one point I definitley agree with you on is that the jury is still out on Ireland. He has to produce this year..No more excuses. Like evaluation of quarterbacks. Irelands sample size is to small to really define him here. And although I am one of the biggest anti Ireland guys here. I realize that it is early to put a stamp on him.

This said. He hasn't succeded in putting out a winning program. My gut says it isn't in the cards. Personally I would have gone in another direction. But since Ross has seen it fit to see this project through. My opinion doesn't change a thing. Would Fisher have been an asset here? I think he would have. Does it bother me that he(Fisher) wasn't allowed to construct the team as he wished? Yes. Will this be a blessing in disguise? We will see.

This league is dependant on 3 things. GM. Coach. Quarterback. We are questionable at all three spots. Hopefully the minds that do this for a living find a way to correct this.

Cavemanna, you are right! This past season was essentially Irelands first, since Parcells was actually calling the shots before. Please don"t be fooled if you think otherwise. We have had way worse than Irelands one season of drafting! Mueller was horrible!

If it's true that they wouldn't give Fisher control of football operations, and that Ireland would continue to make pics, which he appartly CAN NOT DO,then we're destined for more crappy picks, and a llooonnnngggg time before Ross realizes that Ireland couldn't pick talent if they threw a football and hit him in the nuts!!! Such a shame...no one wants to coach this once proud franchise...such a shame. I'm sad now....
