Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

I left this blog for a few weeks, since I was a believer in Sparano, and he got fired. I understand the majority of the fans wanted a change, but most importantly, Mr. Ross (and Ireland)wanted a change. As much as I respect Armando's job as a journalist, I found the information leaks (about the firing) dissappointing, since that should be kept secret. Anyways, I don't think I will ever quit being a dolfan.
About Fisher picking the Rams over the Dolphins... Armando wrote it earlier this week... "The team that loses the Fisher sweepstakes will be regarded as having to hire a secondary choice. That team will be rightly seen as having lost out. That team will have to answer to its fan base questions such as, "What is it about you that was deemed to be lacking in this derby"..."
I could as many of you have done, suggest a HC candidate, but this is not a Santa Claus letter. Only a Dolphins blog during another tough day (one more).
I believe Fisher is not the only one that could have done the job, and I wish the Dolphins find someone that will make the owner, the players and the fans happy. Let's see.

I am so sick of the bashing!! Like any of you have the know how and resources of any coach or GM. Any of you know what does on in a day in the office of a NFL club? Give it a bloody rest. And those who keep saying they are gonna root for other teams? Good..GO!! You were never a true fan to begin with. I've been a dolphin fan for over 30 years and will always be a dolphin fan.. Win or loose.. I support the organization and players I love to watch. All i see anyone else doing is whining like spoiled children.

U don't have time for my pettiness....

But you wanted EVERYBODY to kiss the ring a few days ago when you thought Fisher was a lock......

But now it's pettiness.....your funny bud.....

Chong, give me your coordinates...We've got it all here in Montreal my man...I'll fed ex it to you...LOL!

Please tell Stephen Ross when he calls for your advice about whether or not he should franchise Henne.
If you are not available when he calls, and Henne gets franchised, I will assist you with your suicide.
Cause you know that's really gonna hurt yo.

Miami's not a hc retiring home anymore because it just became a psych hospital. Problem is nothing's being healed.

We've become the nfl's version of headless horsemen in our hierarchy.

It won't hurt me because I never turned my back on him.
But you're all going to want to kill yourselves.
And you know it.

I doubt Henne will be franchised. But I can so see Sparano coaxing the Jets into bringing him in to give Sanchez competition.

Im betting my money Henne becomes a Jet.

Coordinates? Fed Ex?

I dunno about all that?

I just wanna score a lid man.

Yeah PriceMaster, I'll consider suicide if Henne gets franchised...LOL! Having said that, I shouldn't be THAT SURPRISED if it happens...Nothing surprises me anymore with these Dolphins. Ross and Ireland are the NFL version of Cheech and Chong...

Getting to be the stroke hour. Company? We trade strokes?

Moore has shown himself, if nothing else, to be at least as good as Henne; and he's already under contract. It was especially tough last year after the fiasco of Harbaugh because everyone essentially knew this was a make or break year for the coaching staff. If nothing else, with a new staff, we can at least offer perhaps 3 years of stability.

OK guys. Work calls.

I'll be back to listen to the snivelling when the Fisher announcement is made. It'll be good to hear from all the guys who said 'Fisher would never want to work with Ireland'. I'm sure they will all be out, clearly identifying themselves.

But I'm petty.....lol....

Henne's 10 times better than anything the Jets have behind Sanchez. That's why I so seeing Sparano coaxing the Jets into bringing him in as a backup.

TheOtherRick, Matt Moore showed me a lot. He had the same weapons as Henne and the offense became much better. Not saying the Dolphins shouldn't draft a QB, I think they should. But I would also like to see what Moore can do with a better o-line and more weapons. We gave up something like 160 sacks...Just crazy!

This past week on "Fisher watch" was like having a marathon sex "session" with an ugly fat chick.

You didn't really want it. But then you think, SOME is better than none.

Half way through, you figured out you were wrong and just tried to get it over with as fast as possible.

To sum up: I'm Glad That's OVER!!!!

Remember last offseason at the golf tournament when Stephen Ross drove Henne up to the photographers so they could be photgraphed together?
That's who Ross is loyal to.
Ross is not loyal to Mando.
Mando was not the VIP guest at Ross' U Mich Booster parties.
Henne was.

Ross and Ireland are the NFL version of Cheech and Chong...

Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | January 13, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Montreal, you take that back! Cheech and Chong were bumbling idiots, but they were KOOL idiots!

Ross and Ireland aren't even KOOL! They're just Plain Old Idiots!

Here's How It Went When Ross Called Cowher and Gruden:

Phone: Ring......ring...........ring

Pickup: "We're sorry, but, the number you have dialed has been disconnected. Please check the number and dial again".

Can you blame Cowher-Gruden for changing thier phone numbers?

Stop with the nonsense.

Even if Ross were to force Henne back on the Phins they wouldn't even NEED to Franchise him.

I suspect he won't be getting a ton of gigantic offers anyway.

All they would have to do is offer him about 1 maybe 1.5 mil. a year-IF THAT. Back load it with a few incentives and he'd be cheaper yet.

Rain meet parade!

I said it before...and I'll say it again......

I don't believe Ross ever wanted Fisher......I just think Ross is/was smart enough to know that if he didn't show interest....that the fans would accuse Ross of not doing everything possible to get the "hottest" HC available.....

Now that this farce is over with......we will see WHO Ross was really interested in.....

I promise all of you with the exception of Candy, that I will not fondle your corpse after I assist you with your suicide.
Candy I'm not promising that I won't but I'm not promising that I will either so you don't get too excited one way or another.

This is not a dark day in Miami's history, its a normal day, different day same s***.
Fisher not coming here is a good thing, he was a more acomplished Sparano, dull and boring offense. We can now hopefully go out and sign in order, Pete Carmichael, Joe Philbin, Rob Chudzinkski, Winston Moss. Wether they will is another matter.
The downside to Fisher turning us down is simply a kick in the guts, an all too realisation of just how far this franchise has been allowed to fall. I'm not blaming Ross or Ireland directly, the key to Miami's future has always been and will continue to be a franchise calibre QB.
We havent had one in 12 years, we still dont have one and we won't be in draft position to get one next year, this team has too much talent to be that poor as this year proved.
Somehow we lost enough games to be within shooting distance of the top 2 QB's, if the franchise is to rise again it has to make sure of a QB, the only way is trading up now thanks to the meaningless wins against KC, Buffalo and Washington. No coach wants to come here, what worries me is Ross surely told Fisher Miami's plans to get a QB and he wasn't sold, quite frsnkly neither am I.

How can Ross say that Fisher "was the only candidate that had any head coach experience?" Um. Billick? Marty? Heck, even that meatball Mangini (who Ross has nbeen talking to all season) has head coaching experience. Is Ross really this misinformed or ignorant? Does this mean they have no intention of looking at other candidates with head coaching experience (Fassel?). There are a bunch out there. Not that they all deserve a look but, really... He needs to watch what he says. Ireland has him twisted around...

Oh, and Ireland:

Gibril Wilson: -Ireland
Pat White: -Ireland
Chad Henne: - Ireland
Smiley: -Ireland
Grove: -Ireland
Mastrud: -Ireland
Wilford: -Ireland
Columbo: -Ireland
Misi: -Ireland
Micheal turner: -Ireland
Matt Roth (cut): -Ireland
Daniel Thomas (cost net 2 picks for a back up RB - could have had Thomas or a better back with the third pick and taken Mallett): -Ireland

It just goes on and on. Yes, there are some very good moves (Marshall, Dansby, etc. but we gave the house for Marshall; definitely some good signings). Bush? I have to argue that Sproles is the better, and cheaper, back even though Bush was tremendous. Take a look at the Steelers draft and FA signings. That team has a real GM. They know how to do it. Ireland is so-so at best. No way should the O-line not be set after four years. No way should we not have a solid OLB or FS. NO WAY SHOULD WE NOT HAVE A QB (Moore is okay - but that's it - just okay).

Any volunteers to blow my nozzle?

Kris. I like that 10:39PM post...

Fisher lays out his demands....Ross picks a fight over a MUST HAVE.....

Pizzing contest begins.....

Fisher walks.....

Fans say Ross tried....,

Everybody wins......

ross looks like dr.jack kevorkian presiding over a team that died!

There's one thing that I think everyone overlooked in the now Infamous "Fisher Gate".

The one reason I suspected he wouldn't sign, turned out to be the deal breaker.

Think about this: Say you just came out of college and signed a contract to play for the storied BEARS!

After that, you hired on under the infamous Buddy Ryan and worked your way up through the ranks.

Now you've lost a Super Bowl and are auditioning for your second chance at your dream job.

The only problem is, the team that's trying hire you, wants your boss to be the old annoying Ball Boy from back in your Chicago days.

Seriously, consider that scenario on a personal level through Jeff Fisher's eyes!

Fisher worked his way up through the ranks. Ireland rode his Daddy's connections and then Parcells coat tails.

I don't know about anybody else, but I don't blame the man for not wanting to work for the old annoying ball boy from Chicago!

Completely on the same page with you there.

Wouldn't be something if Tebow gets the upper hand on Brady? Imagine the media talking about Jesus and all that stuff...LOL!

You guys got some serious fantasy ideas about what went down. Sure, Ross the billionaire felt the need to burn a week of valuable time just for a charade.

You guys have smoked a few too many and then some.

Those are just my thoughts.....

When Armando reported that Ross said he won't be "outbid"..... That sounded fishy to me....nobody would leak that.....not less than 24 hrs after an interview.....way to soon to show your hand IMO.....especially for an experienced negotiator.....which I am sure Ross is......

After that story.....I became convinced that Ross was pulling the wool ove our eyes....and showing us only what we WANT to see.....

Let's be honest about this~~~Tony S.was your man,he had the team going in the right direction,he was loyal and not a me first coach~~You will regret dropping him!

and then that guy thinking Cowher is coming. I hope you dudes aren't voting in the elections.

The Dolphins problem is that so many 2nd & 3rd rounders have been gotten rid of for nothing in return.
For example Patrick Turner. Obviously he was not the all-pro caliber that we demand of players on our team.
Even so he did qualify to start on the Jets. That means the Jets would have traded us something for him. Perhaps a draft pick which we could have leveraged into a RT so we didn't have to go with Columbus.
Same with Olshansky.
Same with Jason Taylor.
Same with Fasano.

Never thought we would see the day that we would wish to be the Detroit Lions. LOL

Da plane......

Ross has plenty of time to burn......only 2 coaches have been hired.....there is no rush at this point......

And if he didn't make a play for fisher......

You would be under another FAKE name posting how angry you are.....

The Title Of This Blog Should Be Changed To:

"Ross Picks Ireland Over Fisher".

Kris, you could be right. Who knows? I just don't understand all the love for Ireland...

WTH is wrong with you People! Can any one of you guarantee that Fisher would have been a success in Miami? Well, I, can tell you that Miami has been a graveyard for Coaches for the past 30 years. It is not which Coach, it is which Miami, it is which You.

I have said some pretty controversial things on this blog... And I stand by all of them......

Perhaps nothing I have ever said will be more controversial than what I will say next.. ....

I don't think Ireland is that bad.......we are building......and with a real coach....I think we are playoff bound next year.....

Pete Carmichael interview please.

wow 15 pages........impressive

Question Armando! (not that you'll see or read this)

From the NFL.com recent article at the end it said...."Darlington reported that the team already has an interview lined up for Saturday with an as-yet-unnamed candidate."

**** Who might this unnamed candidate be for an interview on Saturday?????

Kris, I agree. I really liked how the team played after the 0-7 start. Sad to say but the injury to Henne was a blessing.

No matter which coach this team ends up with he will be sunk unless we get him a franchise QB, its that simple, the QB always makes the coach look better if hes good enough. Matt Moore is not that guy plain and simple.
Imagine, which is about all we can do, signing DeShaun Jackson in FA and paying over the odds to trade up for Griffin or maybe even Luck.
Not many coaches could screw that up, what a start for a Carmichael, Philbin, Chudzinski.

Ohio, hopefully Chip Kelly...

Also, Ross spurts some things out, like, I want a Star Coach, we will win the SB, etc, which besides being unrealistic, place a great amount of stress on Dolphins personnel. Either learn how to moderate yourself, or shut up.

Henne will be a New York Jet next season, bank on it!!!
Thats Buffalo and NY Jets we will sweep next season.

reasoms for chossing rams OVER DOLPHINS;;;;;;;;

"We say the foundation is good...+ Ireland
Matt Moore pickup...+ Ireland
Reggie Bush...+ Ireland
Defensive personnel...+ Ireland
trade for Marshall...+ Ireland

wtf gives with the Ireland hatred? I think its making Dolphin fans look lame and uneducated to the rest of the NFL fans"

OK...where are the all pros in this bunch?
We had none, as Long did not deserve it.

3 drafts, and no pro bowl picks this year, and barely any in 3 years.
Pouncey good, but no pro bowler.
Thomas?..and we lost draft picks for THAT guy?
May I remind you, Rashard Mendenhall was a FA.
Pittsburgh does it right.

Jan 1st 2013~~Rex Ryan fired as head coach of the New York Jets and replaced by Tony S.

Feb.1st 2014 Jets win Super Bowl.

Fed.2nd 2014 20,000 Dolphin fans hang the self.

Ireland wanted to go after a big name early ..hence Fisher...to apease Ross and the fanbase .But all along he wants another coach that he has connections with and won't over rule what he says and just is happy to be a head coach..I bet Ireland goes after Terrance Newman and Marcelius Bennett next year!

The Heat should trade LeBron James for Dwight Howard. Heat looks more like a team with bosh and Wade on the floor and leBron on the bench.

Just an observation.

Cavemanna..."solid" players don't get you to the playoffs, special players do.
BTW, since when is Odrick considered solid...he's played less the 14 games in 2 seasons.

With all due respect, your argument is specious. Where are the impact players.
Finally, Dansby by decides to play....game 12.
Marshall dropped at least 4 TD's this season alone, and embarrassed us against the Jets last year.

This franchise has one of the worst front offices, owner included in the NFL.

If you are a teenager, you are excused. Otherwise, your life experience is extremely lacking. Ross wanted Fisher. Now its spin control. To think he is out their playing these silly games you have conjured up in your mind is beyond absurd. And if you believe one tenth of it, you need serious therapy.

imawriter (yeah we are impressed)

You say Odrick has had 2 seasons, conveniently omitting he played on half of one game his first season. For all practical purposes he has had one season, and you want to evaluate him like he has had 5 seasons. Paint the picture to fit what you want to believe, but avoiding reality only hurts yourself.

This blog is full of some whackos.

oscar and Aloco,
You were not here earlier so let me repeat my offer.
First of all your worst nightmare is about to come true: Henne is going to be franchised. The only way you can kill that pain is to off yourself. You will need a suicide assister and that is me.
To save your family the shame I will dump your corpse down the hotel laudry chute that way the police cannot call it a suicide and your families can collect.
Lastly I will not fondle your corpse.
