Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

Go get RG3 at all costs Ross and Jeffy Boy... Get us our Andre 3000 look a like

It's not like we lost out on Sean Payton. Jeff Fisher's biggest accomplishment has been longevity. His offensive philosophy and record have been uninspired. Rob Chudzinski or Winston Moss anyone?

Cavemanna, you for real, wow!
Dolphins have to buy tickets to avoid blackouts - Ireland
Dolphins empty stadium - Ireland
Dolphins one of worst Franchises in past several years - Ireland
Dolphins six wins- Ireland
Harbaugh not hired- Ireland
Fisher not hired- Ireland
JP Lossman - Ireland
Pat White - Ireland

I woke up this morning......and my groin was hurting.....

Then I read thru the blog and saw some troll called who called himself "da plane" was riding my jock all night......

Ross is in way over his head. Look at the way he screwed Sparano last year. Seems to me Ross made his billions by screwing a lot of folks. It just never made a difference because he was an independent business man. Now that his is an NFL owner he is acting the same but is in the public eye and has no idea how to handle it.

Ross do something smart for a change.

Hire ZIMMER. I known your stupid but thats beside the point.

MARTY BILLICK CHIP KELLY OR LES MILES!

As long as the ROSS/IRELAND COMBO runs this franchise we shall never rise above being mediocre.

Typo, (known). My Bad.

Need coffee.

ZIMMER.

Kris, that's just the blog papperatzi. It means you're a star on here.

Just don't put IcyHot on your groin injury. NOT RECOMMENDED!

But, I'm not feeling as down as others. The most important addition to this team isn't the HC. It's a franchise QB. That's the biggest, single predictor of how our upcoming Seasons will play out. If we get one, then things will look up for Miami. If not, then get ready for a long, continued trip through Mediocrity-land.

For coach: How about Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison .....this guy has a quality resume.

If you read the article where Ross defends the handling of the Fisher negotiations, he clearly states that he didn't feel that his not wanting to give Fisher power over the ballboy wasn't the deal breaker. I have one thing to say about that...BULLSH*T. Ross is a moron to the highest degree, and the fact he is backing Ireland just proves it. I'm not psychic, but imo, having Ireland as GM has cost us Harbaugh, Fisher, Cowher, Gruden and will probably cost us a few of the second tier candidates. When you interview to assume a high position like HC, you do your research to see what you're getting into first and just from first glance, even a blind squirrel would be able to see what a mess the fins have become. My only hope is that all the fans that live in and around Miami get together and rent sign space and put up Fire Ireland signs, sort of like the Tebow fans did in Denver. I never want to see anyone lose a job, but in this case I think it's necessary and I'm sure it won't be too much of a financial burden on Jeffy as he already has more money than most of us will see in a lifetime. Sorry for the rant, I just had to get this off my chest. I'm done for now, I need a break.

It's ok PA. I feel your pain brother.

I heard Miami even got rejected by Jerry Sandusky for the HC position. They even....ok, I'm not even going to go there. Too soon..

This was the right move for the Fins. Why should an owner and GM who have a plan cave into an ego like Fisher when Fisher has proven little in his coaching career. What team in our division has done a better job of drafting over the last several years than we have? Buffalo wasted a high pick on CJ Spiller and paid a ton of money to make Fitzpatrick their franchise QB. The Jets wasted high picks to draft Sanchize and you see where that has gotten them. NE has stockpiled picks over the last several years and has little to show for it other than a horrible defense and a couple of good tight ends who there is not telling how good they would be if TB wasnt throwing the ball to them. Ireland for his part has done a good job with free agents and draft. Especially last year which is the only year Ireland truly was in charge. We are better off taking a young upcoming coach who isnt going to care about power and ownership and will work their a** off to get us a championship.

Pro Bowl arguement null and void! The only bigger joke than the pro bowl itself is its voting process. Wake up dip$hit$

I thought the level of stupidity shown on this blog last week was mind-boggling, I don't even have a word to describe the stupidity posted here in the last 12 hours.

Chud or winston moss, thats it. Bottom damn line. Rg3.quit being ignorant dumb mfers ross and ireland and do something that can save this franchise!

Yes, we've noticed your own pompous opinions as well quite naive and short sighted. I mean really dude, what do you know about football beyond what your read from a few ignorant sports writers that get paid to crank out articles? Nothing.

Your biggest nightmare is about to come true and you will want to off yourself it will be so painful:

HENNE IS GETTING FRANCHISED

Naive? Short-sighted? Hahaha. I love it. Once again someone uses a word they saw in a previous blog post. Once again someone assumes just because they sucked at playing sports, everyone else here is just like them.

First I don't think its all gloom and doom. But Ross and his stupid comments jsut piss me off. Im could be considered a moron (DC don't chime in on that) when comes to Football compared to the people who make millions to know football. If I can do my own research, and be able to come to the conclusion that Gruden,Cowher, nor Fischer would coach here while Ireland still rules then why the hell can't Ross and pinhead Peterson not figure it out? I said before he would not come here if he does not have final say on personel. Actually I feel the HC should have say over the personel. Having say over personel decisions and wanting to have complete power are two different things. The whole Orange carpet crap, Harbaugh disaster, Tebow celebration on our home field, have made the Dolphins a laughing stock. Now you have an owner with all his advisors sitting in wait for a coach they thought they could land with just money. Knowing he would want more power than they were willing to give. So why wait, why not just say NO THANKS and move on. Idiots. IDIOTS!

Once again someone uses a word they saw in a previous blog post.

Naive, perfect example right there. What, you think the bloggers are all under 15 and don't have a 6th grade vocabulary? Or maybe you think every single thing you post is so totally original and not seen in a previous blog?

Dude, you are making my case for all the rest to see, if it wasn't already obvious too them, and I thank you.

May i ask where that info came from?? Not that it would surprise me.

finfaneurope,

You assume the Dolphins valued any of those guys as highly as you do.

I wouldn't give a plug nickle for Gruden or Cowher. They simply will not win another Superbowl. It isn't even a question.

I wouldn't pay Fisher no more than any other assistant. I certainly wouldn't trust his instincts on personnel and certainly wouldn't give him absolute control over personnel.

I don't see them as idiots. I see them as two guys who recognize that after the celebration wears off, you are left with a hangover.

I never said I wanted those coaches! But apparently those were Ross's choices, his wanna be's. Not mine. If they did'nt want an HC who wanted control over personel, then they should have stayed away from Fischer, that was a known fact from the get go. That is actually my point. If I could figure it out, why could'nt they?

I wonder if Ireland asked Fisher if his mom was a prostitue???

Simple as that,

You affirmed my point with your first ignorant response.

Now I didn't say every poster here had a 6th grade vocabulary but since you want to elevate yourself to a higher standard, lets consider your ability to use proper grammar.

You said "...you post is so totally original." You wish to assert you are smarter than the average bear and you write "so totally". Really? Do I need to explain why that discredits you?

You also said "...obvious too them." Only three words. You should be able to figure out why you screwed that up, but it doesn't say much for your education or capabilities.

Instead of worrying about people being smarter than you, perhaps you should focus on grammar as a first priority. It does strongly suggest how smart you may be and right now...

Mando, I liked your article on WInston Moss. Do you think our birdbrains will reach out to him? In my opinion he sounds like a good fit, but the bumbling brothers probably are too busy spooning to do a more thorough search.

I 100% agree with dolphin 77 . Moss or chud and trade up to get RG3!!! That's how we this franchise back on track and become instant playoff contenders! If you look at this past season where we finished 6-10, we easily should have beat the giants, cowboys, broncos and browns. That does not include The first jets game and the last pats game. Get a legit franchise qb(rg3) and an offensive-minded coach and

We'll be in the playoffs next season!

Ok Guys, let's not put words in each other's mouths.

With that I give you:
THE CRAIG M MANIFESTO

1. Matt Ryan's terrible Playoff game this year proves that Jake Long was the right pick.
1A. The fact that Matt Ryan helped his team reach the Playoffs 3-out-of-4 years, while Jake Long has helped his team reach the Playoffs 1-out-of-4 years is irrelevent. Actually, it can't ever be mentioned in reference to this discussion. Stop typing that statement now.

2. I need 100% ASSURANCES before I ever Draft a QB, and by the way in 2000 a team drafted a QB in the 6th round and he became elite, so...there, it's a fact you can Draft a QB from anywhere and he can be elite.
2B. Again, there can be no mention of the fact the Miami Dolphins haven't drafted a 1st-rd QB in 30 years, nor may it be tied to the coincidental fact that the team hasn't reached a SB in 27 years, because again, one Arena Football player became an elite, SB-winning QB, so that is more quantified proof that 1st-rd QBs aren't any better than any others therefore shouldn't even be entertained.

3. It's NEVER the wrong time to draft a lineman (1,2, 3 years out of 4, if that's the BPA, take him).
3A. Ok, smarty pants, I know there's a glut of linemen talent on the team if you do that. That's where my wet dream comes in....
10 linemen and a RB (doesn't that turn you on?).
3B. Jumbo Elliott PEOPLE!!! Who needs Brandon Marshall. WE HAVE JAKE LONG! Make him eligible, roll him out...TD, every time.
3C. Knute Rockne's Notre Dame box single wing offense. The QB is completely unnecessary, look it up, bring it back.

4. Before you can ever fire the quality control Coach, I need to know WHO you intend to take that job? C'mon, name me 3 other qualified quality control Coaches. You CAN'T DO IT! Stick with what you know.

5. Dan Marino never won a SB. Proof that we haven't needed a QB in FORTY years, which trumps your THIRTY years, so I win. QB doesn't matter.

Ok, you get it, I'll stop. Craig, all in good fun dude, call it a loving nudge. That's how you do it trolls, you can still be respectfully antagonistic. Try it sometime.

In all honesty, there are a half dozen posters on this blog who I'd trust to run the Dolphins over Ross/Ireland. But that being said if they move heaven and earth to bring us a franchise QB I'm willing to forgive.

finfaneurope,

Ireland knew it the entire time and that is why he was heading up the search that involved assistant coaches.

Remember it was Petersen in Ross' ear that was involved in pursuing Fisher and other 'name' coaches.

It is the GM's role however to negotiate the hiring of the coach. Do you think for a minute that Ireland would cede power to Fisher? Fisher wanted final authority. A GM without final authority is a scout.

Ireland is Ross' trusted man at this point. I doubt Ross is even aware of everything that was said during negotiations. I believe this played out just as Ireland wanted.

Maybe the Jeff Fisher saga will turn out like Kyle Orton....

Just because Armando mentioned him, suddenly there is all this interest in Moss. The only team interested in Moss are the Raiders and that is because of the "buddy" system. Moss has limited experience as a coach; he isn't even a coordinator, he is a LB coach. People on this blog have objected big time to Philbin with ridiculous assertions that he has done nothing and doesn't even call the plays. Moss doesn't begin to have the resume or experience of Philbin and isn't even involved in the offense, yet people are jumping on the Moss bandwagon. People can't articulate one reason that Moss should even be considered yet are chanting his name. Unbelievable.

Ireland is Ross' trusted man at this point. I doubt Ross is even aware of everything that was said during negotiations. I believe this played out just as Ireland wanted.
-------------------------------------
Im sure it did, otherwise he would be in fear of his own job. But, I thought Ross and Peterson took the whole negotiation part away from Ireland regarding Fischer.

DC,
It would not matter to me if we had 30 linemen and a RB, or 10 QB's and a center, as long as the team is winning, I dont care how they win.

Are you kidding me isn't this GM the idiot that asked a player if his mother was a prostitute and Ross elected him over Fisher
I give up on the Dolphins Wayne H please come back.

There has to be some talent for HC position among those NFL coordinators. There always is.

The whole prostitute has been beat to death a 1000 times over. That needs to be put to rest.

reference

After 38 years of bleeding aqua and orange, I have no blood left. It might be time for me to move on and root for a team with a decent owner.

Well today should provide an interesting contrast of styles with NO at San Fran. You could call it the DC Saints (and many others including myself) VS the Craig 49ers (and maybe one or two others).

been bleeding since 67, and will keep on bleeding aqua and orange. I dont base being a fan on who the owner is.

One thing to keep in mind, Miami was impressed with Joe Philbin when he interviewed but now, he is on a leave from GB following the tragic death of his son. His team is also playing this week so he is out of the loop until GB is eliminated or hits the bye week before the SB.

Sources say miami is going after the qb they need which is rg3, and they will trade up with the rams. Henne is not getting franchised. He will bw in ny handwashing sanchezes jock!

Fisher knew two weeks ago that he would have preferred the rams. What an a-hole. Glad he's not here!

Chad Henne has 2 fans: me & TheSMF.
You guys say, "he only threw 15 tds"; I say, "he got pulled 30 times in the redzone for the BACKDOOR wildcat what did you expect".
You say, "he can't hit the side of a barn"; I say, "he was the only QB to put 400+ on NE this year and he did it on MNF for everyone in America to see".

And so when Henne gets franchised it will be one of the happiest days of my life.
It will also be one of the worst days of your life and it will hurt so bad that you will want to kill yourself.
I will assist your suicide.
I will not fondle your corpse.
I will dispose of your corpse down the hotel laundry chute so the cops will label it a homocide and your family can collect your life ins policy.

D77,
You are delusional.
We have 7 FA's and only 6 draft picks.
We have nothing to trade, that anyone wants, except possibly Matt Moore.
We could trade Matt Moore for a draft pick and then sign the backup that that team releases.
That is the only trade possibility.
There is a reason that you don't make money.

PriceMaster,
If henne gets a franchise tag, I can only assume its for one reason. If the Jets (as has been rumoured) are intersted in Henne they will have to pay to get him. If indeed Miami does this, it would not be a totally stupid move. However, if they do put a tag on him, and can't trade him, then the FO looks like idiots once again. Because I doubt (or my opinion) within Henne there lurks an elite SB QB.

According to almost all reports, Fischer was torn. He did not know 2 weeks ago that he was not going to take the Miami job. Now did he make a wise business move? Yes. He got what he wanted. And it was not a bigger pay check (according to reports). If Ross realy wanted Fischer that bad, then he blew it. Because they could have gotten him.

Ahhhh, wifi in the cafe. No time to blog for long, but.....call me disappointed. That said, I can't fault Ross for sticking to his guns in RE to having a management structure in place and not putting all of the power into one man's hands.

It looks obvious that we will now be brining in a coordinator of some sort to be the next HC. With that in mind, I ponder who has more success making the transition to HC....OC, DC, Spc Teams??????

It seems to me that defensive backgrounds tend to make that transition better. In looking at the playoff teams this year, only Jim Harbaugh has an offensive background....everyone else is defensive with the exception of John Harbaugh who has a defensive background, but was a Spc Teams coordinator before HC.

Wish there were some more easily accessible stats in this RE.

Oh well....off for some snow shoeing! See you all sometime next week.

One last thing before I go....in RE to Henne and the franchise tag, I just don't see that happening. That would mean they would have to pay him the average of the top 5 highest paid quarterbacks in the league. I just can't imagine them shelling out $20-30M or so for one season for Henne. Talk about putting yourself in a bind with the cap.....for a backup!

fisher wanted to come to miami. ross stopped him by shoving ireland down his throat. fisher was smart enough to realize our owner is delusional and bolt for st louis. smart move.

Dear Pricemaster - I do not enoy readng your posts, they lack.

Heres to watching the 49ers win the superbowl and allowing you to chew on thier franchise QB

did you know that mike nolan tried to get out of his contract with the fins? i'm sure working with the 3 stooges was a factor in his desire to leave.
