Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

Instead of worrying about people being smarter than you, perhaps you should focus on grammar as a first priority. It does strongly suggest how smart you may be and right now...

You can belittle my grammar or my typos all you want. Yet you can't see your own grammatical flaws? Apparently not.

Grammar and typos aside was not the issue nor my point. Since you couldn't counter my point that proved your posts are no more insightful than those you choose to belittle, you resorted to evading the issue altogether and attack my grammar.

Nice try. You can run but you can't hide.

I think Ireland has a picture of Ross with a donkey.

If the story is true, and all Fisher wanted was "veto" power over Ireland....then why have a GM at all?

If I was Ireland and my subordinate wanted veto power over me regarding players...then I would hope my owner would back me....right?

Fisher over-reached and Ross slapped his hand...end of story.

...Get Zimmer on board and lets start planning for the future.

The silver lining to this Fisher fiasco, and someone pointed it out earlier, is that Ross now needs more than ever to make a splash in the draft and or free agency. A few linemen and a couple acorns in the draft isn't going to put butts in the seats come September.

New worst NFL owner. Miami Dolphins,

Stephen Ross. Do us fans a favor and sell the team.

Pricemaster your assertion that we have 7 "departing" free agents and only 6 draft picks is confusing. Are you saying that Miami will lose all of it's free agents and only replace them with 6 draft picks? If so you're saying Miami won't sign any of their own free agents? And if so ,you know this how?

Both Parcels & Peterson have given Ross praise regarding Ireland.
You don't become a billionaire without the ability to read people.

Ross has had three years in which to oversee Ireland...If there were major defects in his ability to carry out his GM duties....Ross would have fired him by now...and this Fisher event would have been the perfect time to do it.

Ross believes in his GM and we as fans need to respect that and try to support it...otherwise you'll be up all night drinking yourselves to sleep.

This team has sunken to such extreme lows that no one of any caliber wants to come here. I think the best thing would be for Ross to sell and get out of dodge. Oh yeah and take his butt boy Ireland with him.

Well said.

How happy is Ricky Williams to be off this "team"? LOL ..... and in the playoffs!

Oh my goooooddddddd we lost Fisher the world is going to end! Did you idiots really expect to hand full power over to a man who never had that in his 17 years of coaching? Ross was hoping he would concede a little and he didn't. He was asking for way too much power qnd Ross was right in not giving it to him. He would basically be a first time GM while also trying to coach the football team. That's too much for one person and Petersen knew it which is why he advised Ross not to allow that kind of set up.

The worst thing is the owner just did the right thing by the team and some of you are lambasting him while sticking up for Fisher. IF YOU RESPECT FISHER SO MUCH GO ROOT FOR THE RAMS!

But you will not, you will stay and root for Miami. Which makes you a cancer.

Fisher's agent reportedly contacted Sparano and got the scoop on Ireland and Ross. It wasnt favorable.

I'm guessing Ross will continue purchasing boatloads of his own tickets until Ireland is fired....however long that is....LOL

I refuse to bet against Tim Tebow anymore. It seems as, if the Mood strikes him, he can beat anybody.

This love affair between Ross & Ireland really baffles me!!! On the one hand, I think Fisher is just an OK coach. On the other hand Ireland is suppose to be the evaluation of talent? I hope we get a up & coming young, hungry coach (Philbin, Chuduski). I just don't have any more faith left in this organization!!!!!

People say whatever you want. Its ok to be a Dolphin fan like all of us. Lets interview Russ Grimm. Why not ?

I'm pretty sure LV has taken some hits this year, with us, Tebow, the lock-out. But they'll be back, believe me, they'll be back.

Marty Schottenheimer is the best coach available.

Essentially this came down to a decision between Ireland vs Fisher and Ross chose Ireland. Very perplexing. Just can't understand what Ross sees in Ireland. I've lost all respect and confidence in this organization.

Look guys, we are all upset at what happened today and if any of you have read my posts you know I'm very critical of this regime lead by Ross; having said that I am a Phins fan, will always be and sincerely hope they know what they are doing. Sometimes it is a lot easier to be a "Madden" GM sitting in front of your computer but the truth is probably a lot harder than what any of us think.

Ok so this did not work out but let's see what positive we and the team can take out of this:

a) If Fisher's heart was not here to begin with I'm glad he is not our coach, and as many of you said good coaches will not demand things like "are you moving your team to another city? B/C if you do I will not". WTF!

b) My explanation as of why our front office and Ross had to put up with Fisher -and his agent- is that we can not afford to burn bridges with the Rams, at least for now, perhaps our people are indeed planning the MUST have trade up to get RG3. After this gets done we can stop playing nice and get ready to whoop some Rams arse when we play them.

c) I still give Ireland the benefit of the doubt, he has done a decent job since the smelly Tuna left. Fisher did not handle that whole Vince Young thing too well, for better or worse coaches still work for owners and if the team owner wants to draft a particular guy, like Young, well you adapt. Young could have been groomed to be a better QB, Fisher never wanted a part of that and if he was truly professional he would have quit, we just witnessed this past week how much the word professional means to him.

d) Now even though as fans we will always support the team we also have the right to see some competence this involves at the very least the interviewing of some worthy candidates, and please Mr. Ross, DO NOT pay attention at the putrid suggestions from the "experts"at the Herald. I mean Mike Sherman? LOL, or any of the Giants coaches, LOL. Zimmer has a decent background but I'm speaking as a fan and the sentiment of MANY more out there: We DO NOT WANT another Dallas person anything hire. Besides our team strength I think is offense and we need that one guy out there to groom RG3. So here is my wish list of candidates:

-Rob Chudzinski: Please guys be adults and recognize you made a mistake last year by hiring Daboll over Chud, nobody is perfect we get that but do not make the same mistake twice. Chud is a very bright coach, methodical, has been successful everywhere he's been including (gasp) Cleveland (although he did have a bad year once there). He is a Cane that alone will sell tix and if he brings Shula as his OC fuhgettaboutit.

-Winston Moss: Ok defense guy but intense from what we know and a former Cane, rather have him than a Dallas guy.

-Chip Kelly: long shot, college offese guru, not sure how this translates into the NFL but my opinion of the guy has changed with time, he sounds awfully smart, and love the attitude. He took a nice jab at the NCAA when asked about the awful BCS championship game at halftime on national TV, awesome.

-Other names: Carmichael from NO, Marc Trestman, and Marty Schottenheimer as long as he does not bring his son and gets surrounded by top notch, and younger coaches.

GREAT WEATHER - not important
GREAT CITY - not important
GREAT FANS - not important
TONS OF MONEY - not important

Now somebody tell me what is wrong with this picture that nobody wants?

If savvy football men do not want this, something terrible wrong is here.

Why is this so terribly difficult for Ross to see?

Like somebody said here, I am done with this clowns, New York Giants all the way, bye Miami

I can not believe how many of you think Matt Flynn would be an upgrade over Moore? Are you serious? Please do yourselves -and the rest of us fans- a favor and really, really sit down and watch the highlights of both of the games Flynn played and you will see a common denominator: Under thrown passes. He is lucky GB has a top notch receiving core (dunno who the WRs coach is but he must be one heck of a coach), please observe how many times he got bailed by good play from his WRs and lousy, I mean tuhrrible secondary play. In fact then watch that same core of guys playing with Rodgers instead and you will see a monumental difference, why do you think NO ONE in GB is 1% worried they lose Flynn?

Look he's a decent QB, a backup QB today, why would we trade (yes trade we would have to surrender a pick or even two to get Flynn!!!) and give him a huge deal, actually more expensive than the one we'd give RG3 thanks to the new CBA. Such deal will be a complete disaster for an unproved 7th round QB with a noodle arm.

To top it all Philbin appears to be going nowhere this offseason due to personal matters, so please stop this Flynn nonsense. We have become numb to mediocrity and average QB play that fans can no longer see that is precisely our inaction at getting a QB that has stalled this franchise. Look at all the last 10 SB champs and all of them have elite QBs, all of them!!! Do you really think Flynn belongs to that category or ever will??!!

I much rather take my chances with RG3, if you do not believe, watch this (start at 2:30 and watch the amazing deep balls hitting the super fast Baylor WRs in stride, plus his obvious elusiveness and vision and leadership this guy exudes, his arm is so strong he makes throws from his back foot, obviously he needs to be better coached but can you imagine a polished RG3?! WOW! Besides with Bush in the backfield and RG3 how would you not be willing to overpay draft picks to see that??!!!).

ask sparano or mike nolan what they think of the ross/ireland combo. or any of the players off the record so they can give an honest answer. crowder said few trusted ireland.

Best comment by salguero !! He hit it on the head!! Ross if he keeps JI with in a way I hope he does!! He will sale the team, hopefully the next owner will get rid of JI !!!
Man thinking about this JI is good bull SH I ter If you can con a rich man you are really good at what you do!! Talk a lot of s h i t
Hey maybe JI was a car salesman back in the days!!

Dear Mr. Salguero

Has Stephen Ross asked himself....what would Tim Tebow do ?

Soiled :)

I was surprised when Ross didnt fire Ireland after the Dez Bryant debacle. And I was shocked Ross chose Ireland over Sparano. Now he chooses Ireland over Fisher????? WTF??????????

If Ross came out and said that Ireland was his illegimate son I could at least maybe understand this nonsense.

Tiger Sam--

Why are you cutting and pasting the same post under different names?

Stephen Ross has done the impossible.

For the first time in nearly 40 years I really don't care what happens with the team. He can hire a Guatemalan maid to coach if he wants---just doesn't matter to me anymore.

I'm not kidding. Yesterday just opened my eyes and convinced me he such an awful owner that things will never be good with him. Weird thing is, it's actually oddly a good feeling not caring anymore.

Still have a lot of great memories of the Dolphins but I'm moving on.

Really, the Truth don't believe in color, creed or brand-name.

The Dolphins are an embarassment to S Florida. It hasnt been a pleasure to be a fan.

EASY SOLUTION to ALL our Problems!

Hire Chudzinski as HC and do WHATEVER it takes to draft RG3.

The Dolphins will be SUPER again!

Ireland and Ross....WTF???

Does Jeffy give the boss special favors after work?

Ireland has cost Ross about 200 million in lost revenue and value of the franchise.

I would enjoy a nude interlude with you gentlemen, in an exotic locale such as Marrakesh or the Costa Brava.

We will smoke hashish and drop acid and explore each other's bodies.
