Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

Best news I've heard in a while.

Fisher is very overrated.

Make Nolan interim Head Coach.

Hire a big gun next year if Nolan doesn't work out!

Todd Bowles is as good a hire as any. Smart, hard working guy, who I assume the players respect. If it meant that Nolan and Daboll would stick around then great.

Getting working on the next draft and attract some more FAs and above all,

GET DC his franchise QB.....

This isn't a blow at all.

I agree with Ross.

Bah humbug Armando with the negative spew.

Good to see keeping Ireland is repelling good players and coaches. I dislike you very much mr Ross. Please sell the team

I have a lot of respect for Jeff Fisher but I'm glad this ended the way it did. Ross showed some balls not giving into Fisher and I believe Ireland is a very good personnel man who has put some good talent in place. Ross stood up for Ireland and hopefully this is the first step in restoring some dignity to this once proud organization. There are a lot of good coaches out there so hopefully they can go out and find one and get on with it.

Didn't Billick offend Mr. Ross somehow in the not too recent past thus making him unemployable in the eyes of the esteemed Dolphins owner's eyes?

Cavemanna, have you seen the FINS' won-loss record recently??? When your team is 6-10 chances are your GM is as smart as a bag of chewed bubble gum.

The Dolphins will SINK in the fast foward lane s.h.i.t.

It's likely good the way things worked out. Fisher is barely over .500 in his career, and without a QB in Miami, likely would have continued the Dolphins on their current level (non-playoff team) for the foreseeable future. Now that he is no longer available, they can choose a lesser known coach and save a few million dollars per year.

This is so incomprehensibly stupid.

You have a chance to get one of the most respected men in football to be you head coach, and you blow it because you want to protect Jeff Ireland?

Jesus Christ this is the kind of thing that makes me want to just become a full time Packers fan. It's tough to take the idiocy anymore.

Let everything keep going the way it is and let Ross see how empty the stadium will be next year. And if you really want to show your displeasure don't buy anything with a Miami Dolphin logo on it. I know I won't.

Well, I guess Ross isn't gonna get that big name, slam dunk of a coach he was looking for - at least not this year. Sad to see how far we've fallen, and scared to see how much more embarrassing we still can be.

Now I know how Atlanta felt when Parcells picked us over them. Great!:-) Now let's go find a QB better than Ryan.

I don't care much for Ireland, but what has Fisher done in his 16 yrs with the Titans that makes him so special. I prefer to search for that hungry up and coming young coach who wants to build a winner and not so worry about power. People, it's not bill belichick; it's Jeff Fisher....a coach who won only about 6 division titles, went to AFC championship 3 times and only went to a super bowl 1 time and lost...IN 16 YEARS

Mustache you are on drugs. We won't win 12 games collectively over the next 5 years. And again, ireland is a complete idiot.

Why don't they consider Mike Nolan????????

Marty Schottenheimer has had 15 seasons above .500

He is still hungry and can get us there.

Good I didn't want that waffle anyway.

I've been following the team since 1970 and I don't recall a worse day

Ross needs to swallow his pride and get Billick in here. He'll pull together an allstar staff.

Only way I'll continue to support this franchise is if they hire Rob Ryan as HC and Brian Schottenheimer as OC and keep Nolan as DC. Poor Dolphin Fans (Me included) ;-(

I wouldn't be surprised if Todd Bowles is kept. In fact he should. This staff is not spectacular but steady. One whole season under a coach respected by players and one who gets along with the system( not just goes along, but doesn't pull a Hue Jackson like tirade) is not a bad thing. Continuity is good if progress is seen. 2-1 and nearly beating the patriots until imploding in the third quarter? Knowing how to treat Jasaon Taylor in his last game? Building on the season is what I see. Hope Ross and Ireland see it also. If Bowles has interviewed in other places, it might mean that it's not just the Dolphins who think he's Head Coach material

Moss or chud are definitely not the answer...so stop.we don't have cam newton or clay Matthews or Woodson and they still suck.....
I hate Ireland. He's worthless, and has killed us in the draft. Absolutely. But why is everyone hating Ross? The whole Nfl wants to hate on him for trying to get harbaugh, but harbaugh did to the 49ers what I thought was impossible with Alex smith. It may have looked bad, but it was the right move. And now, with Miami being apparently one of the least attractive places to coach right now, we had a legitimate shot at the number one candidate out, and lost it because rams division is super easy so less wins are needed for success, and thats what it boils down to. The rams are legitimate candidates for their division and we have to play the pats and jets four times a year.
Ross is doing what we want him to. Hate him for not firing Ireland, but don't hate him because fisher said no. That's beyond insane. If fisher had said yes u would all be calling him a vindicated genius.

Not an Ireland hater, but why are u willing to pay 7M for a coach, but lose him over an unproven GM??? So confused.....

I don't hate on Irealnd as much as some, but in my mind if it was Fisher or Ireland; Ireland had to go.

I'll hold out hope that this will all play out for the best in the end; even though I was 10 years old the last time the Dolphins went to the Superbowl.

No High Profile Coach Would Come To This Organization Were They Would Be Dictated To By Jeff 'Moron' Ireland...Ross Is Incredibly Inept...I wont say that Fisher was going to be the Messiah...But Today We Suffer Yet Another Loss, This Time To The Pathetic Rams...It becomes more and more difficult to be faithful to the Phins....My patience has been wearing thin...For years now......Sell The Team Ross....And Take That Idiot Jeff Ireland with you...

We have 2 very good QBs

Glad all the WASTED blog time IS finally put to rest....NEXT!!!

Why didn't Mike Nolan interview for the head coach job?

Any real surprise here Mando? I mean Ross messed up so badly with Harbough. We have a need at QB and though I think Matt Moore is an upgrade over Henne the Rams have a better chance at Luck. Most of the names floated are not head coaches but assistants. We needed to get rid of Ireland, I can't believe that he'd actually have a say. Anyway, same old same old stuff coming out of JRS.

This onwer is a losser and we will never win again....the fans need to start throwing oranges at ROSS when they see him at home games..if there are any fans in the stands

Kinda feels like High School again when the girl you really liked kicks you in the nuts and starts dating your best friend.

I've come to realize that Fisher was NEVER going to coach the Fins and he used us the whole time.

Fisher...your name is dirt moving forward and I hope you get herpes from some dumb skank.

Sure sounds like a different spin from your previous article, Mando. Make up your mind. Fisher is a name and reputation. A reputation for middle of the road.

Chud, Philbin, Or Moss would be a step in the right direction. Particularly if Billick isn't getting any calls.

You'll be 110 before it happens again.

5 Years under "Parcellian" guidance and this still isnt a perrenial wildcard playoff team.
Ross, under the 4yr rebuilding plan we're supposed to be SB contenders, not still struggling to become a wildcard playoff team. Why are you the only person in the nfl that cant see Ireland's part of the problem, not the answer?

Wow!!! We suck even more than I thought

Call it wishful thinking if you must but the fact that Fisher chose the Rams over the Dolphins doesn't necessarily mean it is a big blow to the Dolphins organization.

hopefully they swung a deal with Fisher and it went something like this "we don't really want you as a head coach because Jeff Ireland is a genius. But use us as leverage against the Rams to get a better deal with them, then trade us the #2 pick in the draft this April. Sound good?"

inimounts ....

all the decisions you listed were headed by Parcells.

proves my point....uninformed.

Last year everyone blamed Ross for leaving Sparano twisting in the wind while he looked into Harbaugh. That looked bad. Real bad. Now you honestly want to blame him for not doing the same thing a year later with Ireland?? What was he gonna do, fire his GM right at the bargaining table? We would look so unloyal NO ONE would ever trust us again. Right or wrong, you stick with your guy. This is how we are built and there is already a GM in place. Fisher wanted more. We can't give that. Good in the long run. As to the future? Calm down. There are plenty of good/great coaches. Find someone that fits. The need for splash sells. It doesn't mean wins. Go ask Redskins how Shanny is doing. Nuff said. Ross did the right thing today. The ONLY thing to not lose us even more integrity.

lol thanks finfan

and @cavemanna it takes a genius to think that getting Brandon Marshall is a good idea? A younger Reggie Bush is an upgrade over injury prone and aging Ronnie Brown? and Ricky Williams? Those were NOT brilliant moves...he's made some good moves that ANY GM with a pulse would make. The real problem with Ireland is not so much his personnel decisions and draft moves (though I think we could list as many busts as successes). The problem with Ireland is the way he stabbed his buddy Tony in the back with Ross. Ireland is so tight with Ross I bet he has callouses on his knees. What "star" coach would want to work under a man with no more scruples than that? We'll pad someone's resume but until Ireland is gone our front office is the laughing stock of the NFL...hmmmmm now that JLo and Marc split...which one will Ireland be able to convince to stay and help fill the stadium seats...

Tony must be jeff Ireland. Because no way was any of that true.
Seriously though, Ross needs to swallow his stupid pride and get billick. His reasoning for not liking him is so not football it WILL make me question him
As owned and not attend games. We need Brian billick. Period.

If Fisher doesnt want to be here. F him! We have better talent in Miami and will get this thing turned around quicker than St Louis. I hope we beat the shi* out of them next year.

It's impossible for me to totally cease caring about the Dolphins---it's been too many years (over 40) and they are embedded too deeply in my heart for that.

BUT this news and the fact Ross could not bring himself to logically and intelligently give Fisher final say over Jeff Ireland puts our 'relationship' on hold. I cannot trust the judgement of this man and he has exhausted any benefit of the doubt I may have still been giving him.

He HAD Fisher aside from this one issue and lost him. And a franchise that was once among the most desirable and succssful now plays second fiddle to the likes of the St. Louis Rams.

I don't recognize these Dolphins. I haven't for awhile. It's sad.

So, Mr. Ross, continue holding your fundraisers for Mitt Romney and letting Jeff Ireland's control issues drive this team over a cliff. I will just have to learn how to watch it all with detached resignation and hopefully find other hobbies to better occupy my time.

You lost me today, sir.

greg, not sure how to fix the front office. Maybe get the Polians on board.

Just seems like the decision-making is always faulty. Sure, they target all the right people, but never seem to make the right choice when it's boiled down.

Culpepper over Brees?
Sparano over Rex Ryan?
Cam Cameron over Mike Tomlin?
Jared Odrick over Jason Pierre-Paul or Maurkice Pouncey or Dez Bryant?

We need better decision-making. It's not going to get any easier. We even argue over the Long pick, and that was the surest thing we'll probably EVER see here. So if these jokers can't make the RIGHT decision out of tough calls, then we're in for a long life of depression as Dolphins fans.

Then who is responsible for us only being a couple pieces away??? Tools...

Who know if Psser would have worked out or not. Fact of the matter is that this once PROUD and GREAT Franhise has now sunk to a level less than the suck ax Rams; one of the worse franchises in the history of the league!

Because of Huiezinga and Ross, this frnachise has sunk to this low. What's next losing out to the freakin browns? COME ON GUYS PULL YOUR HEADS OUT AND GET THIS THING FIGURED OUT!!!

Rob Schneider voiceover "Oh No! We suck again!"

As long as we get Billick or Chud, we are better off than we would have been with Fisher...
Regardless...we are still screwed because no coach is going to be able to pick their own players. Ross is going to interfere too much with Ireland as his tool.

Ross is a complete idiot.

Why did he waste the organization time courting a "big name hc" when he fully knows beforehand that type of hc wants final personnel say so?

More importantly, what has Ireland done so great that Ross wont budge in changing personnel direction?

I agree that most fans seem to HATE Ireland and not have a lot of just cause. I like the pieces he has brought in. Was every single player the right piece? Nope. Is that a realistic possibility? Nope. Even teams with most all of the right players in place have injuries and someone has to fill in and that is not neccessarily the person you expected to be out there. And it is up to the COACHES to keep the team on course during the year. Look at what most experts say about Bellicecks last couple drafts, mostly garbage. Ireland has picked well and brought in GOOD players even if it wasn't who YOU wanted or it wasn't the "sexy" pick. Personally I want a man in office with big enough nads to say FU this is the guy we like and this is who we are going with.

The Dolphin fans should be releaved with Fisher's decision. The Dolphins run a 3-4 defense and Fisher likes and would want to run the 4-3. Moreover the Dolphins have opened up the offense with OC Daboll with some success. Fisher is an old school ground and pound Coach. This was not a fit from the start and the naive Ross and his consultant should have been able to figure that out. The Dolphins were just so desperate to hire the ever leveraging Fisher.

What's next, potential big name free agents picking Buffalo over Miami because they like the weather there???

I think Ross pushed Henne On Ireland/Parcells.
Thats why Parcells got out.
The owner needs to step back.
Fire Ireland bring in Polian and let him build a franchise.

Billick has something Fisher doesnt....A SB RING!!! ....Just sayin!!!

It's official Ross you are out of your mind!!!! You choose Ireland over fisher. That's it you better dig into your pocket now you will have no one in that stadium and you know what YOU DESERVE IT!!! YOU KEEP IRELAND INSTEAD OF A QUALITY HEAD COACH?? I mean I'm not saying that fisher is the total god of coaching but it does prove how you are in bed with Ireland and you are going to regret yet another stupid move!!! My god when with this end!!! Do you know that we are rated the worst organization in the NFL? I am so dissappointed yet again!!! You know what it's just not worth talking about anymore!!!! You have succeeded to lose the very last fans that you had left!!!! Ignorant!!! Another 2-3 years of heartache!!!!

WHEWWW!!!! We dodged a bullit there. THis will turn out for the best. Get a young hungry coach in here!! This guy is not more than an average coach. Bring in Chudzinski!

Marty Schottenheimer
200 wins
126 losses
