Jeff Fisher picks Rams over Dolphins

Jeff Fisher has decided to join the St. Louis Rams as their head coach, The Miami Herald has confirmed through various club and NFL sources.

Fisher seemed headed to the Dolphins throughout the day Wednesday but intense negotiations with the Dolphins, particularly club owner Stephen Ross on the power structure of the organization could not be resolved so Fisher opted to go to St. Louis.

According to an NFL source close to Fisher, Ross was not willing to give Fisher power over the entire football operations, including veto power of decisions by general manager Jeff Ireland.

[Update 1: A club source tells me Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins. Source says club's understanding was that Fisher and Ireland would work together, agreeing mutually on personnel.]

Obviously, given the contradictory stories coming from the Dolphins and the source who is in the Fisher camp, the two sides were apparently not speaking the same language here. Either that or someone is fibbing.

That leaves the Dolphins, who hoped to lure Fisher to become their coach, scrambling to recover from yet another disappointment following a season filled with disappointments.

Fisher, through representatives, informed the Rams he had picked them to succeed the fired Steve Spagnulo. Fisher is expected to sign a contract by the weekend. Contract details remain sketchy.

Fisher's also informed the Dolphins he would be going to St. Louis and thanked the Dolphins for considering him. Fisher spoke with Ireland directly. The Dolphins interviewed with Fisher last week and were hoping to make him the 10th coach in the franchise's history.

So where does this leave the Dolphins?

The team must quickly rebound and continue a search for a new coach. The club has already interviewed Green Bay offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

The Dolphins are expected to expand their coach search. Among the candidates are former Texas Tech coach Mike Sherman, current Carolina offensive coodinator Rob Chudzinski, New York Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

The club contends, through sources, that Fisher's decision is not a blow.

This, of course, is part wishful thinking, part spin meant to protect the club's reputation. The truth is the Dolphins have sunk from a franchise that once could lure practically any candidate -- Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Bill Parcells -- it chased away from other suitors.

In this case, the Dolphins find themselves placing second in a two-team competition to a St. Louis franchise that could be on the move from its current city in the span to three seasons, a club that has been one of the NFL's losingest franchises for nearly a decade.

Miami's search,

Winston Moss - NO way he is part of a defensive coaching staff that has given up the 2nd most yards in NFL history. Inexcusable! He clearly doesn't have the players attention as Armando claims.

Rod Chudzinski - equals Cam Cameron. Been there done that!

Todd Bowles - Sparano turned the team around and Miami would have gone 2-1 with or without Bowles. He didn't do crap! He was Ross way of selling himselves to the players with the black interim.

I was in favor of Fisher because he has NFL HC experience! The last time Miami did that was Jimmy Johnson and at least he made the playoffs with a washed up Marino at that.

We finally lucked out and dodged a bullet! The sky is not falling, the world is not going to end. We should be thanful that the mediocre moustache chose the Rams. Now let's get down to business and bring in a young no-name head coach that will bring discipline, innovation and leadership. We don't need a big name, we just need a great coach.

Mr. Ross needs to concentrate his greed on raising money for a presidential candidate and stop running my team into the ground. The guy has no idea what he is doing, much like his presidential pick. Why oh why did God curse me with an idiot for an owner?

It's pretty obvious that Ross views Ireland as untouchable, as far as getting rid of him or demoting him to a lesser role. Whether Fisher was the right choice or not, I can't fathom as to why Ireland is seen in this fashion by Ross. Seriously, what has Ireland shown anyone to this point as a GM to warrant such action?

You guys shut the HELL up with Chud, Moss Philbin. Zero Head Coaching experience and you don't know anything about any of them!

Actually, Ross is an idiot. Sorry. I didn't read that part. We needed fisher desperately, and he choose ireland. It wasn't a smart football move. It wasn't a smart business move. What's amazing is he will kiss ass and cater to the coach, with a plane, a helicopter, with everything but his ego.

so much for the C.Petersen effect!!

Let's go Mike Zimmer!

I agree with Andy. Zero coaching experience and u know their players, not their schemes

come on mando, quit slacking and give us the goods. what's happening NOW?

Embarrassment? Yes only because the organization let it be known Fisher was the be all, end all choice.

Setback? Yes only because Ross/Ireland's other choices are never have beens or never will be's

Once again we get screwed by jeff ireland.

I'd like to think they'd take a good look on Schottenheimer Sr too. How bad can he ACTUALLY be, really? Jesus, he went 14-2 his final season coaching the Chargers. He must have some idea what he's doing. It would have taken Cam Cameron EIGHT years to win 14 games.....talk to him....what would we have to lose?

Billick too....get them in.....f*ck Fisher....move on.

Wasn't it Parcells who drafted Henne in the first place? How then could Ross push Henne on him then? Parcells doesn't want the owner pushing one of his missed draft picks in his face, so he jets for greener pastures.

Hire Brian Billick

Fire Jeff Ireland

Ross sell the team because you stink at your job.

You guys thinking Marty Schottenheimer would wanna touch this crap with Ireland Ross running the show are fooling yourselves.

Heck, Marty's son was on his way as the nec oc, had Fisher become a Dolphin. What, you think marty isnt watching that?

Ross needs to understand that if things haven't worked with this current front office its not going to work ireland is part of the problem the team is slow offensively and defensively because all we pick is linemen not enough skill and i can imagine miami will pick another lineman in this draft because they cant get it right on the offensive line. They need a qb wr and te plain and simple but that wont happen. The parcells mentality needs to go from this team. Fisher could have made this team a winner didn't happen because ross wants to keep ireland. oh well.

inimounts,

At this point unless Miami goes Mike Sherman or Billick and it doesn't seem they will then at least bring in a type of no non-sense coach. Zimmer! I don't know a ton about him either but I do know he doesn't take sht from his players and is well respected around the league.

Miami has no respect and desperately needs some!

FISHER STAYED TRUE TO HIS WORD..HE WANTED A TEAM WITH A QUATERBACK.IF FISHER WAS OUR COACH NEXT YEAR WE WOULD HAVE HAD A TOP 10 DEFENSE ...DANIEL THOMAS WOULD HAVE HAD 375 CARRIES AND REGGIE BUSH WOULD HAVE BEEN A THIRD DOWN BACK...HE'S A BORING COACH FROM THE MIKE DITKA SCHOOL OF COACHING...LETS GET A COACH WHO WANTS ENTERTAINMENT AND THAT COMES FROM THE PASSING GAME.CHUD OR CARMICHAEL!

dodged a bullet. whew.

ESPN is saying that Fisher was leaning 80-20 towards Miami on Wed, but the deal feel through when Ross said Ireland had the final say on personnel decisions.

Wow...what is it about Ireland that Ross loves so much?

Ross wanted Fisher, Peterson wanted Fisher...what gives?

Mando...time to do some digging on this one.

Good riddance to Fisher now let's get a coach who wants to coach and not power hungry.
Chud, Zimmer, Moss, and Billick should have a chance here.

Ross and the Dolphins are LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good news is we don't have to endure 8-8 seasons for the next ten years.

The bad news is, we could end up with someone worse.

thank thee lord fisher and his ANTIQUATED 4-3 is not coming over here.
Either hire Philbin with Matt Flynn while keeping Nolan
OR
Hire Zimmer to keep 3-4 intact and find a guy with a good offensive mind.
Wouldnt be dissapointed with keeping Dabol but we can do better

The best gift for the weekend is that we didn't get Fisher. If one of the reasons was Ireland, it shows how clueless Ross is.
Talk to Billick.

Blackcerote, I'm glad we didn't get Fisher, but in my opinion few things are more entertaining than a great running game. Remember the R. Williams show?

BLACKCEROTE - How about that time you used than incorretly in your post way too many times, THEN I decided to post and hate on it.

cavemanna,

What exactly makes you think we're "a couple of pieces away?" We're drafting 8-9 for a reason. That means we're the 8-9th WORST team in the league this year. Detroit is a couple of pieces away. Atlanta is a couple of pieces away.

We're a couple of pieces away from being a couple of pieces away. Let me remind you, TWO Playoff appearances in the last decade. ONE Season in the last 4 being above .500. NO Franchise QB. NO structure. NO identity. What, ONE, maybe TWO ProBowl players on the team.

So what makes you think we're a couple of pieces away? Because that's what you asked Santa Claus for Christmas.

Time for fans to get honest with themselves. Let's talk about winning more games than we lose first. Our QB throwing more TDs than INTs before we talk about "being in the hunt." Having a QB that starts for more than 1-2 Seasons.

The one thing I was hoping for out of all of this was switching from this copy cat 3-4 which Miami is average at!

The 3-4 is an attacking, aggressive defense and Miami plays it ok but a base 4-3 with pressure from the front 4 is the best way to attack these pass happy teams!

I am not upset by Fishers decision, feel he is a very overrated coach. That said, this is a telling tale as to why we will NEVER have anyone high profile coach us. This team is being run by incompetence and foolishness. Fisher was supposedly their dream candidate and it waqs reported that Ross would do "whatever it takes" to bring him in. Unless of course that included letting Ireland go. Noone obviously wants to work for Ireland, this is the second coach who has turned us down because of him. We are a laughingstock.

Ireland dooms us again!!!!

OK this decision is on Ross. Plain and simple.
He wouldn't give Fisher control and insisted on Irlend keeping power. So, that is fine.

Going forward, Ross and Ireland are the future of this struggling team. THEY will be responsible - good or bad - THEIR reputations are now completely on the line.

They failed to bring in the big name experienced coach (Gruden, Fisher, Cower). So, unless they hire Billick, which they won't, they will be taking on an inexperienced coach.

It's all on them!!

I hated Dick Saban, and he still tops the most embarrassing day to be a Dolfan. Yep, when Saban said he wasn't going to coach Alabama and then DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP TO DOLPHIN HEADQUARTERS TO MEET WITH WAYNE and jumped on a plane to Alabama was definitely #1. Then Dick blames his wife for hating South Florida and Wayne continues to praise Dick after he left him standing. BEYOND EMBARRASSMENT!

But this comes in SECOND. Not that we lost Jeff (500) Fisher to a crappy city like St. Louis. No but our owner decides JEFF IRELAND is more important to the organization then hiring a guy like Jeff Fisher. And as mediocre as Jeff Fisher maybe, at least he isn't an idiot like Jeff Ireland.

STEPHEN ROSS & JEFF IRELAND HAVE DESTROYED THIS FRANCHISE!

Way to be LAST on every Dolphin news Armando, you're the man!

cocoajoe,

IMO, the embarrassment wasnt Fisher saying no. The true embarrasment extends all the way back to last season when Cowher declined after knowing IRELAND would still be running the personnel show.

The TRUE EMBARRASSMENT is why IRELAND continues to be the DEALBREAKER.

IRELAND'S DOEN ABSOLUTE ZERO TO "EARN" THIS RIGHT.

I still don't understand why we let Ricky go. Even at his age, he was doing about the most you could expect for a back-up RB and he would've played fairly inexpensively (2 year $2.5 million). He has been respectable in Baltimore with limited playing time (444 yards this year with over a 4 YPC average).

...and now in the play-offs. Then again, maybe he didn't want to stay.

IrelandSucks, except we scored more points than our opponents this year, were 6 bad bounces away from 12-4, and we are indeed going 12-4 next year.

Ross won't talk to Billick. He somehow "offended" Mr. Ross at some point in the past. This is how disfunctional this owner and his front office is. The mindset is just laughable.

You can't have the tail Wag the Dog!!!!!!!!! How do you ask a head coach to win games but not have final say on personel and draft picks etc.??
No Proven head coach will want to work in the Dolphins structure!
I've been a Dolphin Fan since 1970 and wish someone like a Don Shula would enlighten Mr. Ross on how a successful NFL Football organization is run.

IRELAND HAS TO GO,HE IS THE REASON WHY NO COACH WANTS TO COME TO THE DOLPHINS. PEOPLE LIKE COWHER AND GRUDEN WANT TO BE THE GM BUT DUMB A-- ROSS WANTS TO KEEP IRELAND AROUND UNTIL HE DRIVES THE DOLPHINS IN THE GROUND. TO BE HONEST WITH ALL OF YOU'LL ROSS SHOULD START LISTENING TO US FANS BECAUSE WE KNOW WHAT WE NEED TO WIN OR HE WILL SEE TICKET SALES FALL. MOST OF THE TIMES WE FANS KNOW WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT AND EVERYONE SAYS GET RID OF IRELAND HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO KEEP SAYING THIS TO GET ROSS TO UNDERSTAND THAT IRELAND = FAILURE PERIOD.

Yes it's easy to blow off Jeff Fisher now because he went to St.Louis, and F him because he doesn't want to be here but any top tier coach wants to have the say in personnel and making moves so now what do we get ? A yesman to Jeff Ireland and a yesman to Steven Ross which sounds like mediocrity to me and alot of you in here seems to like that. Alot of you also say that " well Ireland makes good personnel moves." I guess you like 6-10 and being in the bottom of the AFC east too. Our best personnel move for the offseason just went to St.Louis. I want RG3 to come here but now, god I hope he goes elsewhere. This is a mess !

Finally a decision.....I know the Steve Ross & Ireland bashing will now continue to reverberate in the national media and the minority of dolphin fans who just find it amusing to poke fun and vitriol at others when they themselves are FAR from being on the right track in life....they only wish they could sniff the success that Ross & Ireland have attained in their lives....These guys gave it their best and now time to move on....the good news is that this might keep Nolan in town who I always thought is better than Gregg Williams....Williams is too blitz happy and the old-school 49ers will give them a beat down....Nolan is more selective in his blitzes, I prefer it that way....I think MIke Sherman should interview....

The fact is Fisher picked the Rams over us. Reasons aside, it looks BAD!

pow YEAH AND HOW ABOUT THE TIME I F@@# YOUR MOM!

Doesn't Zimmer run a 4-3? I think so.

Lets not bring pro bowl players into this because the pro bowl and its voting process is a JOKE!

Andy, I know Zimmer, much better than I do any other coach. I watch every bengals fame too. And I do love how he coaches, he was there the week his wife passed and the team gave him a game ball, but my problem is he makes Nolan redundant. He will make our defense better, but we need help on the o side and that's the coaching side I want. I would be happy with Zimmer, only because I do admire what he does to defenses, but It's probably more of the fact that I know Ross is to egotistical to go after billick and Sherman probably won't even want to come. So there is no offensive firepower out there.

Nationally, Ireland will never live down the Dez Bryant interview (strikes too many racial chords), and will never live down the knife in the back he gave Sparano in favor of chasing Harbaugh(media likes to pick sides in soap operas). Find a franchise QB and the critics will be silenced.

DC, we scored more points than our opponents did and we were literally 6 bad bounces away from being 12-4, even though Sparano had them too tired from practicing too hard the first 6 games of the year. We had a *terrible* year in terms of luck. I know, shoulda woulda coulda, but if you recall we *dominated* large portions of 13 of the games and, seriously, perhaps not 12-4 but we "shoulda" been 9-7 if not 10-6, easily. We lost one game on a missed FG by a guy off the street when our kicker had a pulled groin. In fact, in the first 7 games all we needed was an O line. And pass coverage in the first 2 games.

We go 12-4 next year, watch.

Who cares Fisher went to the Rams in 3 years he will get fired there because they will still suck. Ross you freaking idiot. Quit running the team like you are trying to find the next American Idol and just hire Bowles and keep the coodinators in place. Bowles is a solid coach and obviously other teams are looking at him. Who cares about having a star coach. Worry about finding a star QB and all the other problems will be solved.

Whatever spin the media wants to put on it they will..

Yeah, the Dolphins lost out on their top candidate. Fisher doesn't like the fact he can't be the ultimate authority football related... Oh well...

Truth is, Fisher would've rebooted the franchise again, and we would be in rebuild mode right away. 3-4 to a 4-3. Ground and pound... blah..

I say, go with Zimmer. He's defensive minded, but I think with Zimmer, we keep the OC and DC, and move forward. Sparano was a scapegoat, and became a lame duck coach after lasts years fiasco.. Don't repeat it... Miami is building a good nucleus. A guy like Zimmer would enhance what is already here. Fisher would've taken 3 years to get his vision imprinted on the team.

What worries me the most is not that we lost Fisher, but why.
If the spources are right, then here's the dots we can connect:
We are looking for a HC that either is on the same page as Ireland, OR is willing to compromise their beliefs enough to be called HC with Ireland's plan for future success. Either way scary.
Even if we DID want Billick, he wouldn't put up with that either.
So given that set of dots to connect, who lights your fire?
The light has dimmed drastically in the span of a few minutes.
I'll try to be more upbeat on my next post, but I'm feeling sick right now.

For those of you who are shocked and dismayed...what did you expect form this front office and ownership? You should be used to disappointment by now....

IrelandSucks needs to change his name to:

IrelandSwallows!

That's the only logical reason that Ross is keeping him around.

This is the fast train to no where. i

Fisher never requested full authority over the Dolphins?? BULL !!! Dolphins are saying this to make it look as though Fisher chose Rams for other reasons other than the REAL REASON: Because Ross loves Ireland, trying to calm the rioting masses with pitchforks and torches in their hands that want Ireland's head on a stake!!

Selling the team to Ross is Huizenga's last bad decision, in a long line of bad decisions. That aside, Ross' ineptitude is making Huizenga look really good in comparison.

To lose out on Fisher because of an affinity for Jeff Ireland is simply horrible decision-making. Ireland must be pretty damn good at sweet talking Ross, because he does nothing but make bad roster decisions and now this.

10 years from now, we'll be in the same position the Rams are in now.

I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH THIS!!!

ROSS SAID HE WAS KEEPING IRELAND. WHY WOULD HE GIVE POWER OVER HIM WITH FISHER.

THEN IRELAND ISN"T NEEDED THEN.

BRING IN TODD B.

CAN WE PLEASE STOP WITH BILLICK!!! HOW MANY INTERVIEWS HAS HE GONE ON IN THE PAST 4 YEARS!! NONE!!!

Miami is in NFL Purgatory regardless of who their Head Coach is until they get a franchise QB! There is just no other way this team can win. I'm not saying a franchise QB that needs to throw it for 5000 yards but a guy who is capable of winning games and not a freaking game manager like Henne, Matt Moore, Fiedler!!

This team was going no where with Fisher and no where without him unless they get a franchise QB. The RG3 trade scenarios are so far fetched and will never happen with play it safe Ireland. We don't know much about him but out of Parcells shadow but it's safe to say he plays it safe with solid, safe picks. He will draft Riley Reiff or Jonathan Martin in round 1 followed by a predictable second tier pass rusher in round 2.

Matt Flynn? Could be Kolb or AJ Feely all over again. The only way he succeeds is if stays in a West Coast system he knows.

Outside of that look for Miami to bring in Jason Campbell, Matt Leinart, OR.....Henne as Matt Moore's competition! haha it gets better and better
