The quaterback talent for the 2012 draft just got thinner, as Oklahoma University just announced Landry Jones is returning to school for his senior year.
"I want to accomplish the goals that I set before I got here, and there is still a lot more to do," Jones said. "I want to make sure I've exhausted every effort in that area. And I want to be a senior. I enjoy being at OU and with my teammates and look forward to graduating with the guys that were in my class when I got here."
The Artesia, NM, native said the NFL remains his goal.
"That's the ultimate goal for anyone who plays football," Jones said. "I've thought about that since I was a little boy. It would be a great honor to play in the NFL and that goal will still be there when I finish at Oklahoma."
I'm glad Jones is going back to school. It is the best decision for him because, frankly, he struggled terribly the final month or so of the season and that hurt his draft stock. He showed poor decision-making. He turned the ball over. He proved himself incapable of carrying his team when injuries befell the offense.
Unlike the decision by USC's Matt Barkley to return to school, Landry's decision isn't really a huge hit to the Dolphins. Jones would probably not have been a top 10 draft pick, given his struggles.
He thus would not have figured in Miami's plans at No. 8 or No. 9 where the Dolphins are scheduled to select. (There will be a coin toss between Miami and Carolina for the No. 8 pick and the loser takes No. 9).
Barkley, by contrast, might have been the second or third quarterback selected and would definitely have been on the radar of both the Dolphins and other teams in the top 10 looking for a quarterback.
The indirect effect this Jones decision might have is that teams in the middle of the first round that might have waited for Jones to fall to them now might be tempted to trade up past the Dolphins to land a quarterback.
Impossible to predict.

So much for Year of the Quarterback.

First Barkley then Jones. Our Education system is working. "Son, if you do not graduate and polish your skills, then you might be drafted by the Dolphins."
I wish Luck and RGIII would stay in school another year now, then maybe "Jethro Ireland" will get us a high enough draft pick next year. Lol.
More realistically, I wonder what kind of draft pick we could get for Matt Moore? A second roung pick or even a first next year? Or something far less?
What does everything think the Dolphins could get for Moore?
I'm not saying trade him, only what his trade value might be.

sigh are u insane, nobody would give up more than a 6th rd pick for moore. hilarious, 2nd rd, hilarious

We can't go into next season with only Losman as a back up. I'll bet they sign Henne.
Posted by: Hanging Chad | January 05, 2012 at 09:45 PM
I have a feeling that we are interviewing Philbin bc FIsher is signing with the rams. Not a bad thing as I said before I have a bad feeling that we will regret letting go of Bowles
Posted by: bk | January 05, 2012 at 09:52 PM
Have you heard Bowles speak? Ebonics. Ghetto idiot. Sparano was bad enough. Get rid of this dude.
Posted by: wt | January 05, 2012 at 09:58 PM
Perhaps you are right Dusty. I'm not saying Moore is good, but he has his fans. I'm just curious what most personnel men think of his potential.
In any case, it's too bad that the offseason rebuild has become the most important part of each Dolphin season for the past decade. For once, it would be nice to play well in the offseason with a good chance to beat any team we play.
As it is....our season is the draft and then we wait for the draft next year. Lol.

Since it's virtually impossible for us to land Luck or RGIII at the current draft position, I wouldn't be surprise if Acorn Ireland prefers to trade down for more picks. That's his modus operandi. It'll be up to Ross if he's willing to pay premium for one of them.
Posted by: cosmodo | January 05, 2012 at 10:04 PM
Armando: in your previous posts you asked why not Schottenheimer, Sherman, or Billick? I believed Ross already answered you. He wants a "young Don Shula". Look at the candidates already: Bowles, Fisher, Toub, and Philbin are all relatively young. I hope he adds Chud to the interview list. I wonder if keeping a young team is also one reason he opted to retain Ireland as well. So no old farts for Ross.

Blah fart blah.

Wake up. Fisher is in his 50's. Ross is just talking smack. Jerking off the press. We'll get stuck with some lame coach and no QB and will be the same old story a year from now.

Ross says Peterson won’t work in “executive capacity” with Dolphins
“He’s a trusted friend and adviser and will be in Miami and our offices strictly as an adivser [sic],” Ross said, per Hyde. “Jeff Ireland and I are making the decsions. [Peterson] is not and will not be here in any executive capacity.”

7 of the 12 coaches in the playoffs come from a defensive background. It does NOT matter what side of the ball a guycame from. All that matters is their ability to motivate and put together a great staff.

This team is becoming the Miami Irish. Ireland rules the land. They will change the logo to a 4 leaf clover soon.

Nope, lost my virginity to a 15 year old girl in New Orleans.
Posted by: PriceMasterBater | January 05, 2012 at 08:21 PM
Yeah, except he was a 35 year old virgin at the time and the child was a retarded 15.
He did a 7 1/2 to 15 in Sing Sing, which led to his "Manly" couch encounters later on.
Ask him though, he'll tell you. It's all good.

I just love blending the Mixolydian and the Pentatonic. The combinations are endless and your boundries are challenged.
When you throw in the Phyrigian it supercedes your Majors and Minors! You don't have to break the rules, there aren't any!
Everything becomes wide open. Full Blast and TOP DOWN!
There's a vibe that these three MAGICAL passageways lead you too. It's called T-R-U-T-H!

SIGN HENNE AND LANGFORD BACK
GET WR CB OR RT WITH FIRST PICK.
GET RID OF HARTLINE,BESS,COLUMBO OR ALLEN
FASANO HAD A GOOD YEAR. BUT ADD A TE IN THE DRAFT.
FREE AGENT MARIO MANNINGHAM DEPENDS ON THE MONEY.
OR SEE WHAT GATES HAS.
I'M NOT FOR PACKERS BACK UP QB.
FLYNN IS IT.
WE BEEN DOWN THAT ROAD TOOOOOOOOO MANY TIMES.
LET HENNE AND MOORE DUKE IT OUT WITH A NEW COACH
I'M JUST STILL IN AWWW BECAUSE SPARANO'S GONE
YEPP PEEE.

OU, UF, & USC QB's dont do well in teh NFL Palmer is teh exception & still avg.
Posted by: d | January 06, 2012 at 07:54 AM
Guys with Taylor retiring we had better find someone who can pass rush and fill the void in the middle of our D.
Bring in Flynn and Keep Moore. You have a pretty good QB group and let them fight it out.
We also need two OL men. I would draft one and buy one.
A beast TE would be nice, but really the next draft could be best player on the board most of the way. Unless Indy wants to trade for Luck.
I vote best player on the board this draft. and buy a couple needed spots. Dont forget our NT is a free agent and that could change the whole draft picture.
And if you bring in Fisher running the 4-3 hybrid has always seemed to be Miamis strong suit.
Go Dolphins!!

For all the noise that the Dolphins next QB won't come through the draft folks might be overlooking Tyler Wilson at Arkansas. The deadline to declare is coming up this week. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the Dolphins could trade down sending Cleveland the #8(or9) pick (that they could then package with the #4 to move up to #2 if they want to snag RG3) in exchange for the #22 and #36. The Dolphins could then snag Tyler Wilson at 22 and add two more guys who can step in and be starters at 36 and 40/41. While Wilson learsn behind Matt Moore.
