McCoy believes himself the leading candidate

Mike McCoy is scheduled to interview with the Dolphins on Thursday, the last of the three second-round interviews the team is conducting as it tries to find a new head coach. But this one might be more significant than the other two in that McCoy tangibly believes the job is his to lose.

Acccording to a source, McCoy considers himself the front-runner in the Miami job and is so confident of this status, he took his name out of consideration for the vacant Oakland Raiders job. McCoy was scheduled to interview for that Raiders opening in Denver on Wednesday but ultimately declined.

The source, who requested anonymity, said the Raiders were not thrilled with the apparent snub but were made to understand that McCoy believes himself the front-runner in Miami and he didn't want to do anything to hinder that status.

Both Todd Bowles and Joe Philbin, Miami's other two finalists, are also on the radar for head coach jobs with other teams but have not removed their names from the running of any potential opportunity.

It is unclear if McCoy was led to believe he is the front-runner by the Dolphins. The Dolphins are not commenting to the extent they declined to even confirm which candidates are being interviewed in the second round. The club did confirm completed interviews during the first-round of interviews.

The team did tell both Bowles and Philbin that today's interviews "went great," according to sources. The club is clearly not showing its cards.

McCoy has the enviable position of being the last of the three finalists to interview for the job. On Wednesday, the Dolphins talked to both interim head coach Bowles and Green Bay offensive coordinator Philbin for a second time.

McCoy will get the chance to the leave the lasting impression on owner Steven Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland.

Philbin, meanwhile, got an endorsement for his Dolphins candidacy from current Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think he would make an excellent head coach,” McCarthy told Green Bay media. “I’ve said that before.”

Philbin has been with Green Bay since 2003 and has been offensive coordinator since 2007, although McCarthy calls plays. The Packers have ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in yardage each of the past five seasons, including third in 2011.

As Philbin, McCoy and Bowles compete for the job interviews, there is starting to be behind-the-scenes lobbying for each candidate from parties partial to one or the other.

One source asked why the Dolphins would be so enamored with McCoy as to give him a second interview, noting that the Broncos started the season on a 1-4 slide and ended the season on a 1-4 slide. In fairness, the Broncos did win the AFC West title.

But even that title was getting shot down by sources partial to the other candidates.

One of those noted that the only reason the Broncos won the AFC West is because since-fired Dolphins coach Tony Sparano opted for a two-point conversation against the Broncos early in the fourth quarter of their October 23 game. The conversion failed, giving the Dolphins a 12-0 lead instead of a 13-0 or 14-0 lead.

Had Sparano kicked the extra point, the Dolphins might have withstood a breakneck Denver comeback and still won the game 16-15 in regulation instead of losing 18-15 in overtime.

Interesting ...

That people close to the other candidates are bringing up these issues might also be a sign they believe McCoy might be Miami's leading candidate and he might need to be cut down a couple of rungs to even the playing field.

Over the last 3 years which team performed the best: Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, or Green Bay Packers?

I want a coach that was in the best and winning-est program, that would be Philbin.

I've finally come to the realization what a complete waste of time this blog is. The number of people with anything even remotely interesting, original, or clever to say is close to zero (and certainly none of them are here now). What a tedious collection of simpletons.

Darryl, I agree. My uncle is a huge packer fan. He wanted mccarthy fired last year after they lost the phins. He didn't lose again until this december lol

Let's Hire the Monkey who chooses the wins and loses...he will spin the wheel.....at least he is a winner almost 50% of the time..and that still beats the current monkeys running the F.O.

Guys There is a tug of war now because Ross wants Philbin but Ireland wants Mccoy. I hope Peterson steps in and tells Ross to pick who he feels is right. If Ireland don't like it he can leave.

Are the Dolphins seriously going to trade a #1 draft pick for Tim Tebow?? I hope this is just a joke...

If they dont improve the talent on this team in the offseason, it doesnt matter who the coach is...........Just call him Puppet #2!!!

Montreal - No way, no how.....some poster suggested that at somepoint today and a few folks have latched on, that's all.

It all stems from this notion that if McCoy gets the gig, he'll want Tebow. Personally, I think he wants to get as far away from Tebow as possible....another season with that fraud and McCoy's career will really be toast.

Sounds pompous to me, no wonder Ireland likes him..

Unfortunately with Ross and Ireland running the show, I would put NOTHING past them at screwing this franchise...Just Sayin!!!

If we trade our top pick for Tebow, Ross wont have to buy any more seats. And I'd rather have Tebow then RG3(Pat White revisited).

There will be no Teblowing in S. FL. next year, so, please, knock it off...

ahahahahahaha ......

McCot, get real worst possible canidate

I can so see guys like marshall and our passing offense being so thrilled with that move..........Wildcat-Take 2!!!!

Somewhere out there, Dead Henning is smiling and hoping miami pulls the trigger on that move...*lmao*

According to Drew Rosenhaus, McCoy will get the job...

a true sign that 2012-2013 will be crap McCoy as head coach. I can guarantee I will not pay or neither will my other 6family members to support and buy tickets

mccoy is awful why did you dump Tony
.... he was awful as well

chance to loose the rest of your fan base ROSS
if you hire McCoy

Again, Ireland gets last word. Unbelievable. Makes you wonder if what is going on between him and Ross isn't sexual. LOL!! Of course that's ridiculous, but it just amazes me how Ross trusts Ireland. Let's just say the Dolphins don't make the playoffs again, how many chances does Ireland get??

Why do so many people who clearly struggle to construct even a simple sentence post here?

Seriously, it's as if they have a 4th-grade level grasp of English and then decide to broadcast that embarrassing fact to a wider audience.

We better draft a "franchise" qb like RG3. I'm telling you fellow dolphin fans, Matt Moore is not the long term answer. Mark my words. Watch how good Griffin turns out. We are overdue to drafting a qb in the first round. Griffin is our guy!!

Latest rumor...Indy will interview Chip Kelly...

Hire Philbin, wait we have a ship of fools Hire McCoy based on what>? His age? What a joke

Hire McCoy and the seen will be worse then Blazing Saddles seen when they intro'd the new sherriff

Not sure how much this means but Drew Rosenhaus says Mike McCoy is going to be the next Dolphins HC. Is he McCoy's agent?

Sorry. meant to say Not sure if this is true or not but Drew Rosenhaus says Mike McCoy is going to be the next Dolphins HC. Is he McCoy's agent?

Mike Gundy

Stop, please, my eyes are bleeding....Facts are facts; Ross is the owner and Ireland is the GM--enough of the Get rid of them screams--ain't gonna change. Start rooting fot the Jets or just stop........

Ireland has had about one year to really start forming his own team after the fiasco Tuna heaped on us. He has made some good picks with draft and FA's. EVERY SINGLE GM/decision maker had wasted picks on their resume, so don't seperate him from anyone else in his position. Also-Ross needs to be willing to spend--not in the press, but in the mix.

A few more wins and we would have all been calling Sporano the next Shula and looking for no changes except a big QB. I don't dislike Sporano, just that he was not gonna get us there and we had enough time to see that and neither was Henne as QB

We are stuck with the fact we will have a young unproven person as HC, so let's support whoever it is and move on. This team played hard through adversity and has heart.

I have said before that draft picks are prescious and the foundation of building a franchise (duh--yeah, as long as the right players are selected..., blah, blah, blah...) so don't waste or overpay. I would absolutely do otherwise for the potential of the likes of Luck or RG3 (but since we probably won't I would not sell the farm for the other horse, so to speak), we should then stock up on OL, TE, DB, RR and surround a serviceable QB type. Moore wasn't half bad, but we have no competition.

If everyone is so sad and feeling that the Phins have become the laughing stock of the league, we can help change this by stopping the crap. I don't fault anyone for being angry at where we are--I know i am, but right now anything less than supporting our team is counterproductive. Anything less that supporting WHOEVER comes in as HC, is counterproductive!!! Ross isn't selling, Phins aren't moving, Brady is still gonna be a PITA!!

With the Jets falling off the track, with the talent we DO have and given the right decisions, there is still hope out there this could actually become interesting...not doomsday.

Who needs a QB?

Who needs a GM?

bring in the 3rd tier candidates for an interview!!

It's all over boys! Mike McCoy will be announced at Miami press conference 12 pm tomorrow. This from Chris Mortenson on Van Pelt's ESPN radio show just 2 minutes ago

The irony is we are interviewing coaches from unsuccessful teams. There is only one logical choice, Philbin!

There is a RUMOR that Jeff Ireland has it in his contract if he is fired or does not have final say over personnel, he is due an obscene amount of money from Stephen Ross (in much the same way Parcells could at any time leave and get paid). This was put into his contract prior to Parcells jumping ship and put into place by Bill Parcells. So Stephen Ross is really handcuffed. He doesn't want to have to pay Ireland for firing him or taking away his personnel decisions. That is why Stephen Ross couldn't hire Bill Cowher (he couldn't give Bill final say), why Jeff Fisher is now in St. Louis and why the other big name coaches won't even consider the job. Stephen Ross is married to Mr. Ross until his contract expires (whenever that is). So you are going to see Mr. Ross do nothing but support Jeff Ireland and sing his praises NO MATTER what he does. This is the way it is Dolphin fans. And you can thank Bill Parcells for leaving the Dolphins with one last present. Jeff Ireland and no way to get rid of him! Once again, this is only a RUMOR I heard, but it makes COMPLETE sense now when you think about it!!

Go 'Fins!!!

wow mccoy, cant get any lower than that. stadium will now be offcially empty on sundays

Racist ass Dolphins front office not giving the blk guy the job!

No kidding NHPinsFan. Reading this crap is a drag. Every team goes though years like this. I feel the light at the end of the tunnel is closer that people here believe. I am looking forward to this off season and expect great things. All the bitching is getting old.

Ross can get rid of Ireland whenever he wants to. Might have to pay up, but he can still do it

No offense, but, I don't buy that rumor...Ross stands to lose much more money in the long term by continuing to field a losing team than he could ever be obligated to pay to waterboy.

yeah cali cant understand why we are all pissed off, hmmmmm

mccoy philbin bowles oh no the dolphins are in big trouble again thank you ross and boy wonder ireland

I can understand NH and cali's feelings about the negativity on this blog, there are times that I feel the same way, however, I also see how fans need to vent and this blog provides the perfect forum for that, I've vented on here and I'm about to do it again, can anyone please tell me why we would hire McCoy? I can not think of any reason on this earth how he wins out over Philbin or Bowles, I for one wanted Bowles over Philbin and McCoy. I hope the rumors are not true and McCoy is not the guy for our next HC.

searched everywhere (no--did not hear the show) no confirmation reports of McCoy rumor...whatever......

I still say it would of been better off to keep ever coach for this year with a weaker schedule.

Avoid all this BS.

very weak schedule, but sparano is garbage, should of been fired before season. and we had fisher but ross was so dumb and kept ireland over him, unreal and pathetic

I fervently hope the Earth's crust opens and consumes every living thing on this planet in a terrifying conflagration of flames, toxic gases, and burning lava. I hope it is both agonizing and painful for all, and that when it is over there is nothing left of this planet but a dead, forgotten stain in the universe.

Just because a guy comes from a successful organization doesn't mean he will bring success to a new organization. Conversely, just because a guy was involved with an unsuccesful organization(s), doesn't mean he won't bring success to a new team.

I've said it before today. The NFL is littered with guys who had lacking careers as coordinators and assistants and were on some pretty bad teams....but they've turned out to be damned good HCs.

It's not all black and white. There are a lot of various attributes that provide for the make up of a good HC. There are also a lot of other factors that have to be considered.

Cases in point:
Cam Cameron has long been considered one of the best OCs in the business. He came from a highly successful organization in San Diego and completely flopped as a HC in Miami.

Wade Philips is frankly one of the best in the business in RE to defense. He too came from a highly successful background in San Diego. He did not/does not have the mettle to be a HC.

Norv Turner is another offensive master mind and has been involved with numerous successful organizations...but as a HC he stinks.

Mike McCarthy for example was an average at best OC from a purely statistical POV. His stints with New Orleans and San Fransico happend to coincide with those teams being some of the worst in the league while he was there. I'd say he's doing just fine these days as HC of the Packers.

Mike Tomlin is another example of a guy that was a pretty solid positions coach but unimpressive (putting it lightly given he was a DB coach and had the worst pass defense in the league) in his one and only season as DC for the Vikings. Again, I think he's doing ok these days with the Steelers.

There are numerous examples either way here and absolutely no proven formula for picking these guys.

Dolphins will continue to stink until 2 years after Ireland is fired.

Ireland has already cost Ross about 200 million in lack of attendance and the corresponding plunge in the franchise value.

C’mon Miami…tell the truth and shame the devil…U guys suck more then a 2 dollar hooker with a half off sale…If u can’t run with the big dogs…And if your truly honest…u can’t even keep pace with the little ones either…so just stay on the porch. It’s not even worth the hassel of playing you scrubs anymore…The game is boring, irrelevant, and a waste of time…So please take my advise and stay safe on the porch with the puppies…Believe me when i say…5 losing seasons out of 6, will always tag u as a loser…So have some shame, stop all your fist pumping and realize that your not Nfl material anymore..maybe transfer to the cfl or the arena league.

Info for those who are wondering if Matt Flynn is the next great QB pick up for us. I don't advocate Kelly's articles usually, but he and I see eye to eye on this one. I've brought up how unimpressive I thought the actual plays were that earned Flynn such accolades a few weeks ago. Well at least I'm not the only one.

thought this was interesting that Omar Kelly had stated...

" I'll say this about Mike McCoy. The dude has GREAT references. Nobody has or can say a bad word about him. Even though the resume isn't flawless, and the numbers aren't impressive of the units he's led....people in the industry think he's a good coach, and knows how to get the most out of quarterbacks. He'll be a head coach in the NFL soon if the Dolphins don't pick him. Not sure he'd by my first choice, but I can understand why he's viewed as the front runner".

" If Mike McCoy is the guy....I'm going to put this in the Brian Daboll category of lessons learned. Numbers don't tell the whole story. Daboll has an aura to him, and he easily wins you over. When you see the job he did, and how he carried himself it backs up all the nice things people had to say about him. He earns your respect. Mike McCoy will likely have the opportunity to do the same".

I feel that Rogers and Flynn are both "system QBs" They are only good because of the system that they are in. May not work well in another system. IMO

Has Ireland been fired yet?

Apparently Omar has the Gift(so does everybody else but don't use it).
