McCoy believes himself the leading candidate

Mike McCoy is scheduled to interview with the Dolphins on Thursday, the last of the three second-round interviews the team is conducting as it tries to find a new head coach. But this one might be more significant than the other two in that McCoy tangibly believes the job is his to lose.

Acccording to a source, McCoy considers himself the front-runner in the Miami job and is so confident of this status, he took his name out of consideration for the vacant Oakland Raiders job. McCoy was scheduled to interview for that Raiders opening in Denver on Wednesday but ultimately declined.

The source, who requested anonymity, said the Raiders were not thrilled with the apparent snub but were made to understand that McCoy believes himself the front-runner in Miami and he didn't want to do anything to hinder that status.

Both Todd Bowles and Joe Philbin, Miami's other two finalists, are also on the radar for head coach jobs with other teams but have not removed their names from the running of any potential opportunity.

It is unclear if McCoy was led to believe he is the front-runner by the Dolphins. The Dolphins are not commenting to the extent they declined to even confirm which candidates are being interviewed in the second round. The club did confirm completed interviews during the first-round of interviews.

The team did tell both Bowles and Philbin that today's interviews "went great," according to sources. The club is clearly not showing its cards.

McCoy has the enviable position of being the last of the three finalists to interview for the job. On Wednesday, the Dolphins talked to both interim head coach Bowles and Green Bay offensive coordinator Philbin for a second time.

McCoy will get the chance to the leave the lasting impression on owner Steven Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland.

Philbin, meanwhile, got an endorsement for his Dolphins candidacy from current Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think he would make an excellent head coach,” McCarthy told Green Bay media. “I’ve said that before.”

Philbin has been with Green Bay since 2003 and has been offensive coordinator since 2007, although McCarthy calls plays. The Packers have ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in yardage each of the past five seasons, including third in 2011.

As Philbin, McCoy and Bowles compete for the job interviews, there is starting to be behind-the-scenes lobbying for each candidate from parties partial to one or the other.

One source asked why the Dolphins would be so enamored with McCoy as to give him a second interview, noting that the Broncos started the season on a 1-4 slide and ended the season on a 1-4 slide. In fairness, the Broncos did win the AFC West title.

But even that title was getting shot down by sources partial to the other candidates.

One of those noted that the only reason the Broncos won the AFC West is because since-fired Dolphins coach Tony Sparano opted for a two-point conversation against the Broncos early in the fourth quarter of their October 23 game. The conversion failed, giving the Dolphins a 12-0 lead instead of a 13-0 or 14-0 lead.

Had Sparano kicked the extra point, the Dolphins might have withstood a breakneck Denver comeback and still won the game 16-15 in regulation instead of losing 18-15 in overtime.

Interesting ...

That people close to the other candidates are bringing up these issues might also be a sign they believe McCoy might be Miami's leading candidate and he might need to be cut down a couple of rungs to even the playing field.

Checking my calender for Jan. 20 2012.

Let's see...........................

Oh...........here it is!

It says today is the day SpOrano gets the last laugh on Ross and Ireland.

Fist Pump!!!!

Oscar is a doctor like Ireland is a GM

Both should be sued for malpractice

Do Philbon or McCoy have any latent ties to Dallas? That'd certainly make them the front runner. If McCoy is Ireland's fave then ya gotta go Philbon - Ireland is only interested in a puppet. McCoy has done exactly WHAT to be considered so highly? Philbon coaches but doesn't coordinate? WOW! Its so sad to watch yet another cluster*uck proceed in the inner circle of what used to be the Miami Dolphins. What was once my top priority in entertainment time allotment has now become a team I almost watch peripherilly at this point. I don't even make it a point to watch every game any longer - they aren't worth the time. It all started with Jimmie Johnson....and the epic slide continues to this day. If I ever see that man in public - I'll go to jail.

the regime already had their pick and is stringing this out. bowles was considered by everyone and not hired. philbin has had real tragedy recently and is still interviewing in tampa. you gotta know mccoy(stopped interviewing) was already promised the job. its a rouse and mccoy will soon be named our new coach. dumb and dumber lead us dont forget.

I woke up and read this from Barry Jackson:

Hard to figure out

No generalizations can be made about the recent plight of first-time head coaches who were promoted from the assistant ranks. Some work out; some don’t.

Several have been highly successful in the past five years, including Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin (55-25), Baltimore’s John Harbaugh (44-20) and New Orleans’ Sean Peyton (62-34).

But of the 12 former assistants who were hired for their first NFL head coaching job since 2009, only four have winning records: Rex Ryan (28-20), Jim Caldwell (26-22), Mike Munchak (9-7) and Jason Garrett (13-11). And Caldwell was fired this week, after the Colts fell to 2-14 without injured Peyton Manning this season.

The combined record of those 12 coaches: 164-231. That group includes several who were highly regarded as coordinators, such as Minnesota’s Lesley Frazier (6-16), Todd Haley (fired by the Chiefs after going 19-26) and Steve Spagnuolo (dumped by the Rams after going 10-38, and agreeing to become the New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator Thursday).

The caveat is that most of those 12 coaches inherited teams that needed serious roster upgrades.

Hard to figure out? Ha!

We got Jeffy "The Ball Boy Wonder" on the case!

It means Coaches do better with Teams that have the better Personnel. Ha!

DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY JOBS TO GO TO ?????????????

OSCAR IS DOCTOR ? MY FOOT..... HE TOLD US HE WAS A RETIRED MAIL MAN 3 WEEKS AGO .....

EVERYBODY KILLING IRELAND FOR WHAT?

THE ONLY THING HE DONE WRONG TO ME WAS NOT SURE UP THE WIDEOUTS.

EVERY POSITION IS BETTER THAN WHEN HE GOT HERE.

NOT ONLY THAT BUT DEEP ALSO.

2 PLAYERS ARE STARTING THAT WAS HERE BEFORE HE GOT HERE BELL AND CAREY.

THE PROBLEM ISN'T IRELAND WHO FOUND WAKE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY.

OR WHO DRAFTED THE LT WHO ALWAYS MADE THE PROBOWL.

OR TRADED AWAY 2 2nd ROUND DRAFT PICKS FOR A PROBOWL WR.

WHO SAW BUSH AS BEING A STARTING RB AND TRADED A 4th OR 5th ROUND PICK TO GET HIM.

WHO BROUGHT IN INCOGNITO AND PAID HIM LESS THAN WHAT MOST OF YOU MAKE IN A YEAR.

DAVIS AND SMITH ARE TURNING THE CORNER AND I STILL THINK THEY CAN BOTH BE GREAT.

WHO TRIED TO GET RID OF SPARANO LAST YEAR BUT HE WENT ABOUT IT ACCORDING TO PEOPLE WRONG.

I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG BUT WHATEVER.

NOW THAT SPARANO'S GONE HE CAN FIND A COACH USING HIS HEAD AND NOT JUST BE COMMITTED BECAUSE OF BP.

KOA MISI AND PAT WHITE ARE THE ONLY PICKS I DIDN'T LIKE.

IRELAND DON'T SUCK

LOOK FOR 20 PAGES OF DUMB POSTS ONCE THE NEW POST COMES UP SAYING McCOY IS OUR NEW HC AND HEARING AND READING A LOT OF THE SAME CRAPE WE HEARED BEFORE WHEN JJ AND SPARANO WERE HIRED ........

WHO GOT;;;

DEVLIN
ODRICK
MISI
GATES
D.THOMAS
COLOMO......? AND MORE

ALoco is jealous. When he tried for job they tell him come back when you learn enough english to say:

RONOLD ,

I LIVE IN THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD,PLENTY OF JOBS AND YOU GUYS ARE POSTING 24/7 AND CLAIMING YOU R SMART WHILE LIVING IN TRAILERS AND STUDIOS ......

Talking crap until Ross flies in today, uh?

Bill Parcells death bed confession will be that making Ireland a gm was the worst mistake he ever made!

Now that's funny!

McCoys offense is crappola,Bowles,Phibin or BUST.

Should have kept Sparano and fired Ireland.

Those who say Ireland sucks don't know football. I know that Superbowls matter but really look at what he's doing before you judge. Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Jake Long, Mike Pouncey, Reggie Bush, Dansby, Marshall, Wake. These are excellent players. REALLY we are just a Quarterback and a Tight End away from being a Playoff contender if you ask me. Henne and Pat White are really the only Terrible Picks that he's made. Miami fans are just the worse. Ya'll don't understand the process.

EVERY POSITION IS BETTER THAN WHEN HE [IRELAND] GOT HERE.

#1 When Ireland got here, the team was coming off a 1-15 record and had NO talent. A blind-folded Monkey throwing darts at a dart board would field a better team then that 1-15 team.

#2 A blind-folded Monkey throwing darts at a dart board probably would have also have gotten more then one player selected to the NFL Pro-bowl in the last 4 years of the draft.

You question why all the hate for Ireland?! He has failed to DRAFT any studs in any skilled positions since he got here! And he has completely ignored our most pressing need (QB).

Jeff Ireland sucks. It wouldn't surprise me if half of the people posting on this blog defending Jeff Ireland actually work for the Miami Dolphins or are Jeff Ireland himself or someone in his family. Don't for a second think the Dolphins don't read these blogs.

Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Jake Long, Mike Pouncey, Reggie Bush, Dansby, Marshall, Wake. These are excellent players.

Vontae Davie, Sean Smith, Jake Long and Mike Pouncey. That is what you are giving me with FOUR years of drafting? No thanks. When you consider the # of draft picks we have had, the drafts overall for the last 4 years have been mediocre. One pro-bowl player produced in 4 drafts (and he was the #1 overall pick?) No thank you. A complete failure.
