Miami's 'intimate knowledge' a good thing

Work with me on this ...

The Dolphins hired Joe Philbin as their head coach. He was the offensive coordinator at Green Bay and so one supposes he is familiar with Green Bay reserve quarterback Matt Flynn, who is expected to be available as a free agent this offseason as he searches for a starting job.

Philbin hired Mike Sherman as his offensive coordinator. Sherman was the head coach at Texas A&M where one supposes he became very familiar with starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill is available in the coming draft as perhaps the third or fourth-rated quarterback in the draft.

General manager Jeff Ireland, meanwhile, is a graduate of Baylor University. One supposes he still has ties to Baylor, where quarterback Robert Griffin III did great work in winning the Heisman Trophy in 2011. Griffin will be in the draft and could be the first or second player selected and a target for the Dolphins if they get the hankerin' for trading up.

So, pardon me for doing a lot of supposing here, but I'm supposing the Dolphins should have an advantage over other teams when it comes to knowing and understanding Flynn, Tannehill and Grffin.

"I guess you could suppose that, couldn't you?" Ireland told me during his appearance on my radio show, Armando and Perkins on 640 Sports (640-AM in South Florida) Tuesday. "Yeah, you know, we have some intimate knowledge of a lot of different people. Obviously with Mike and Joe and my ties to those universities and obviously the work that our scouts do -- my pro scouts and college scouts and how they surround themselves with resources and people -- we have intimate knowlege of the market. And that's a good thing."

It is a clear advantage in a situation where more information is always better. Of the five top quarterback possibilities for the Dolphins this offseason, including Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, the Dolphins are ahead of the game on the three mentioned above. They obviously have work to do in gathering information on Manning and Luck, but I have serious doubts Luck is within reach so really, the issue is they know three of the likely four players on an "intimate" level.

Advantage Miami.

The Ireland interview is below. In fact, the entire 8 o'clock hour of the show is below, including our interview with Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com:

2012-01-31_0131_8am

---------------------

Ireland is aware of the comments about playing with elite quarterbacks that Brandon Marshall made following his winning of the MVP award at the Pro Bowl.

Marshall said his job was easier when he was catching passes from elite quarterbacks because they "put the ball in the right spots." Marshall also agreed with me when I said on my twitter account that if the Dolphins improve the quarterback position, they improve that position and Marshall at the same time. He retweeted my tweet.

Some of you took exception with the comments for various reasons, among them that they were a slap at Moore. Ireland disagreed.

"I don't know if it's a slap in the face at all," he said. "Matt did a nice job this year. And he's going to continue to develop as any quarterback we bring in is going to do. When you're over there and playing with Pro Bowl quarterbacks, they do things differently than some other guys. They're there for a reason. You've got the Tom Bradys of the world, and obviously he wasn't over there, but you have the Ben Roethlisbergers and Drew Breeses of the world and they're Pro Bowl quarterbacks. They play at a little different level than other quarterbacks. But that's not a slap at Matt. Matt did a great job and I think Brandon would tell you Matt did a great job."

I agree.

--------------

The Dolphins continue to fill out their coaching staff. I've been told Jim Turner, a longtime friend of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman who served as the Aggies offensive line coach the past three years, is close to being hired in Miami. I presume he will coach the offensive line.

No announcement has been made by the team. Turner has never coached in the NFL. He did coach at Delaware, Northeastern, Harvard, Temple and Louisiana Tech. He also served from 1990 to 1994 in the United State Marine Corps.

So one supposes discipline will not be an issue with his unit.

Semper Fidelis.

Andy -- I've read the opposite - Tannehill was a QB all the way but played WR for a year and a half to help the team.

cant grab blackmon. we pick 9th. no chance at blackmon. flynn def the right choice at qb

AFTER EVERYTHING ARMANDO HAS SAID IM STILL FOR HENNE AND MOORE.

PAYTON IS GOING TO COST AN ARM A LEG AND A NECK AND HE MIGHT NOT MAKE IT THRU THE SEASON.

AS FAR AS FLYNN.

THERE'S ONLY ONE BACK UP QB THAT I CAN THINK OF THAT LEFT THIER TEAM AS A BACK UP TO DO WELL STARTING FOR ANOTHER TEAM THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

THAT'S SCHAUB.

BRET AND YOUNG DID WELL BUT THAT'S AFTER SITTING

turn on tape of tannehill, guy just isnt that good. would be a waste of a pick

backups have done great (brunell) and done bad happens both ways

Blackmon,

No way he makes it to Miami. Just take a look at the possibilities of teams that want him.

Rams
Vikings
Browns
Bucs
Redskins
Jaguars

They all need a play maker at WR and why not take the best on the board. Trust me Blackmon won't be there. And don't get excited when he runs a 4.6 40 and then use the Jerry Rice ran 4.6 line. Blackmon will probably go to the Rams once they trade back with Browns or Skins and definitely won't make it past the Jaguars.

correct andy and im glad. better guys out there for us.

richardson?

dt runs like an injured ronnie brown.

stop,dance,drop...lol

weeden.

weeden, lol stop with the mediocre qbs in draft. find our franchise guy finally. now more garbage like henne

i remember when idiots in here were mad we let brown and ricky go

db, weeden beat luck,rg3,noles and l,jones this past season. some decent qb's huh.?
lol

rw would have ran to his hash tent after trying to run behind colombo.
lol

Dear Mr. Salguero

I have spent all morning searching "Craigs list" for Franchise QB's, no luck so far.

guess I'll start looking for one in one of those trader books or look in the want adds.

Diligently searching

Soiled :)

Dear Mr. Salguero

Ever see that TV show on the History channel American Pickers....maybe they could help us find a franchise QB or maybe check out the Pawn shop from Pawn stars...they get alot cool objects.

Chummley would make a cool GM

Soiled :)

Texas,

You may be right but regardless he isn't worthy of a 1st round draft pick. I'm telling you he is a nice project but 1st round? No way. He extends plays nicely but for every good throw there are 2 or 3 where he over throws or throws at a receivers feet. I see the potential but I wouldn't use a 1st rounder on him.

Dear Mr. Salguero

Tell Jeff Ireland to also check out E-BAY...leave no stone unturned.

Soiled :)

dolphins number 1 target should be above and beyond peyton manning flynn and rg3 are plan b.

?

Trade Moore and a second round draft pick to move up in the draft for RG III. Sign another qb in the later rounds and sign Henne. Bring in Chad Pennington as the qb coach. And let the best man win.

Peyton in a Dolphin uniform...I just do't see it.
Tony Dungy, who probably know Peyton better than anyone said this weekend that if Peyton can play, he plays for the Colts...if he can't play, he retires.
Dungy was pretty sure Peyton would not move to another team under shaky conditions.

Besides, do the math...free agency is in March, the draft in April.
If Peyton is still not medically cleared in March who will take a chance on him?

Flynn is the leader in the clubhouse and has the inside track to be our starter in Sept.

Andy - You and I may not spend a first on him but what would Ireland do? If we don't grab Flynn then Tannehill becomes a more talked about QB with Miami just because of the connections to coaching.

I recently did a Miami only mock with only 4 rounds and I didn't take a QB at all. Of course I did it under the assumption we signed Flynn. I don't know if he's the guy either but I would trust Philbin on that decision.

I had us trading down with Cincy in the first. I figure an ideal pick for Cincy would be Richardson and they are not going to get him at 17 so they trade with us. Plus they have a 2nd first round pick so it doesn't hurt them too bad.

We get their 2nd rounder and a fourth this year. With that happening I have us taking Melvin Ingram at 17.

Sparano will sign RoboHenne to the Jets practice squad and give him more time to develop.

I rate Weeden, the OK ST QB as the third prospect coming out of the draft. He has a strong arm and is accurate. He won me over at the Senior Bowl practices.

1) Luck
2) RG 3
3) Weeden

Flynn comes available first. You go get him if you can. If not, you go after P. Manning next if you can get him on the cheap with a bunch of playing incentives in the contract. If you miss out on them, you go get one of the three QB's I've listed in the draft. The others behind Weeden aren't worth the pick.

here are some of the current mock drafts online and their guess for the dolphins first pick:

1. Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
2. Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
3. RILEY REIFF, OT, IOWA
4. Ryan Tannehill Quarterback Texas A&M
5. DAVID DECASTRO OG, Stanford

Every mock draft with the exception of one has us picking a lineman...most have us taking an OL.
Furthermore, most have RG3 going to the Browns and Blackmon to the Redskins.

Texas,

A trade down with Cincy in order for them to get Richardson sounds logical. I'm big on Michael Floyd. He may even be gone by 17 but that would be a perfect spot to take him. I personally would take him at 9. The guy is a matchup nightmare and had over 100 catches this past season. He has back to back 1000 yard seasons and has done all that with so so QB play. He just simply can't be covered 1 on 1 in college and I think that is a skill that you can't teach. To go out and win the 1 on 1 matchup is something a guy has in him. I know it's against DBs in some case that never will sniff an NFL training camp but I see his skill set being very effective in the NFL. I think he will run under a 4.6 at the combine. Blackmon is the better, polished WR but I say Floyd is faster then he is.

Fitpatrick is overrated and would be a reach at 9. Stop talking about blackmon, please. He will not be available. We either go DE/DL with our first pick or tackle if either reiff or Martin is available. I feel like desean Jackson would be a good pick up if he decides to behave and not resign with the eagles. Familiar with west coast themes AND can stretch the field.

i believe you sign Flynn and draft tannenhill if available in the later rounds.

wHy noT?

NH -- along those lines there is a draft site that lists all the mocks or most of the mocks.

dcprosportsreport.com/MockDraft.htm

As of right now the majority have us taking Rieff.

Osweiler QB Arizona St is moving into the 1st rd also. He's 6'8', strong armed and mobile. I think he makes a better pro then RG3.

I have Miami taking Ingram at the #8 position.
Check it out at:
www.professorlousnfldraftsite.com

Between 2009 and 2010 Matt Flynn was 47 of 78 for 496 yds, 3 td’s and 3 int’s. Since then he played sparingly, except for the Detroit game in which 3 of the 6 touchdowns he gets credit for in the game were due to Nelson, Grant and Driver making excellent runs after the catch and a 4th was due to Nelson making a leaping grab over a defender to catch the ball and take it in.
Both of the 2010 games he played in were loses and the performances weren’t anything spectacular. Yet, people are ready to give him the keys to the franchise.
Philbin knows whether or not Flynn is ready to play in this league and if and when he decides to bring him down to Miami (or not) then everyone will have their answer. The assumption is it is a foregone conclusion that Philbin in going to snatch up Flynn and Flynn is good enough to be the future on the franchise. But, if Flynn could excel under Philbin’s tutelage and Philbin’s system why couldn’t Moore, Henne or a young quarterback drafted in the first round do just as well?

Andy -- I've read the opposite - Tannehill was a QB all the way but played WR for a year and a half to help the team.

Posted by: Texas_Dolfan | February 01, 2012 at 09:07 AM

Sometimes, playing reciever to help the team means, not good enough. SOMETIMES. I'm saying Tannehill isn't or won't be. Just trying for proper perspective.

After Red Shirting, Tannehill couldn't beat out Stephen McGee or Jerrod Johnson. That's understandable, just not inspiring. It was Mike Shermans call.

Tannehill was allowed to compete at QB. The next year, Sherman again went with Johnson over Tannehill.

In his final season, he still didn't beat out Johnson. No initially anyway. They shared snaps until(wk 4-I think) Tannehill FINALLY ousted Johnson.

Tannehill has started a total of 7 games.

Now, I'm convinced that PART of the reason his QB progress was slowed, is simply that was producing and contributing as a LEGITIMATE WR.

I said all that to say this:

Tannehill is just to raw, too inexperienced and too much of a Wildcard to be a late first round pick. This guy is a major project at BEST and you just don't use a 1st round pick(under any scenario/trade down or what have you)on a Major Project with just 7 starts.

I figure if the guy with the big hair could do it so could I.

Andy -- I like Floyd as well but not near as much. Winning 1 on 1's is a very good thing but would be even better if he matched up with the Claiborne CB types in college a little more. I feel like his level of competition is lacking somewhat but in that same breath you could say he didn't have a great QB throwing to him too.

For me he's a late first (high 20s) to early 2nd pick unless he does something amazing at the combine to move up somewhat.

As for the rest of my picks up to the fourth I have it like this.

With the 42nd pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select Coby Fleener TE – Stanford.

With the 53rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select Markelle Martin FS – Oklahoma State.

With the 73rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft Miami Dolphins Michael Egnew TE – Missouri.

With the 103rd pick in the 2012 NFL draft Miami Dolphins select A.J. Jenkins WR - Illinois.

I don't have the 116th pick from Cincy this year yet.

-NH, I'm assuming this was atrade down? Where do they have us taking him?

Do you remember which mock this was? I'd like to look at it.

Odin -- Go here

Those wanting Moore must not have been watching the games closely. His strength is the touch he has on deep balls. IMO we havent had a QB that throws the deep pass well since Danny boy.

His weakness however is his accuracy on short passes and his fumblitis. As much as I enjoyed what he brought to the team as a play maker, he will not ever be elite IMO because of these reasons. We will run a west coast offense now and that requires accuracy on the short throws as well as the deep ones and Moore doesnt have it.

Hopefully Flynn is the real deal and we can land him. It doesn't appear that Manning will be healthy enough in time, and I fear if we don't get Flynn it will be another year of what we already have.

Nothing like a little perspetive, eh?

This caused me to pause for a moment and reflect back on the mass hysteria that broke out here.

Not only were there assumptions, some were taking giant "Leaps of Faith" in proclaiming the REASON Ross hired Philbin was BECAUSE he could land us Flynn-LOL.

Humor is the Fountain Of Youth. I "Gits Mine" whenever and where ever I can.

Nice post-BTW.

Porfessor Lou,

Nice job on the site. It's always hard to predict until after the the combine and free agency.

Quick note and Im not calling you out or anything. You may have made a mistake you talk about Jacksonville taking an OT but talk about Jeff Otah and Jordan Gross who play for Carolina. I'm guessing the pick was supposed to be Carolina at 8 and taking the OT not Jacksonville

Yesterday's gone said:

"does Philbin know what that final missing element is and can he Moore locked into it."

Missing element? That's easy, real easy. The missing element is a FULL training camp with the 1st team offense and CONTINUITY. CONTINUITY is the missing element for a QB to get better. Matt Moore will be a real good QB for us if given 1 system and time to get good at it. Why is that concept do fu.king hard for fans on this blog to grasp. I keep reading Flynn, Flynn, Flynn! Let's sign Flynn! He only will command $25-30M! What a steal! Based on what?! 2 STARTS! 2 fu.king starts! On an excellent team with an excellent offensive system that has been in place for several YEARS! Does anyone on this blog consider what Matt Moore could have accomplished given similar circumstances. IMO, he has done a helluva lot in a short time with ZERO continuity. If we can't move up to get RG3, or Luck, I say draft a 2nd, or 3rd rd. QB, let him compete w/Moore and Devlin and get some players at positions we absolutely suck at. (RT anyone?) Pass rushing Defensive end/OLB?

RG3 wont even be the 2nd QB taken
Posted by: MJ | February 01, 2012 at 01:15 AM

_______________________________________________

You could be right. He could be the 1st. Tony Dungy says if it were him, he'd be more inclined to pick RGIII over Luck.

Actually, I don't believe that will happen....but RGIII will be the 2nd QB off the board. What are you smokin'?

New Coach Wanted,
I'm with you on Blackmon. Someone to give Marshall some competition and a little humility. Marshall is good, but he would be better if he could learn to "SHUT THAT BIG PIEHOLE OF HIS!" Does that guy even think. just for a second, or two, before he opens his mouth!?

DUSTY:

WE FOUND OUR FRANCHISE QB BUT WON'T GIVE HIM TIME TO MATURE

2 watt,
DT and Ronnie Brown are not alike at all. RB used to dance at the hole. DT hits the hole decisively and does well with yards after contact. If DT can stay healthy and get more touches, he will be fine.

I BET THE GIANTS ARE GLAD THEY WAITED FOR ELI

Fake GM,
Thank you for that. I have the same person proofing my site that Armando had proofing his blog.

Hardcore,

When Henne went down, I started checking out Moore, more closely. The teams he played on, the OC's he worked under, his circumstances and amount of actually playing time, etc, etc.

I've come to a similar conclusion. I think Moore has **EARNED** at least the CHANCE to take the next step up to the big time.

Solidify his line and get him another Receiver and legitimate TE(not necessarily in that order-lol).

Worst case scenario, we've solidified the O for that ever so elusuive Franchise QB.

stillhardcore,

I am all in on Flynn if Philbin brings him here. Philbin won't be basing it off 2 games. He will be basing it off of being with the guy for 4 years. Philbin is a smart guy from everything I have seen so far. He knows he is tying his coaching career to Flynn if he brings him here because of the dollar amount that Flynn will be paid he will be handed the keys to the franchise.

If Flynn is not pursued by Philbin then we know that Flynn had 2 very good starts and is more of an anomally then what he is probably capable of over a 16 game season.

I have stated before personally I like what I have seen from Flynn. Is he as good as 480 yards and 6 TDs? No way! But from what I've seen he can hit receivers in stride and has a really good feel for the game. Imagine what it's like to see receivers not wait for a ball or comeback for an underthrown ball. Matt Moore is a nice stop gap/back up but if he is the starter heading into 2012, Miami is going to continue to hover just below .500

Ireland and Ross are saying they need to upgrade at QB and I fully expect them to do it this year.

Ireland and Ross are saying they need to upgrade at QB and I fully expect them to do it this year.

Posted by: Fake GM | February 01, 2012 at 11:22 AM

The problem is, they don't have the Guns or the Cohounnas to get the guy that can come in and immediately unseat Moore.

There's a couple of wildcard scenarios out there, but they'll be REAL EXPENSIVE one way or the other.

Missing on this could cost Philbin AND Ireland their jobs.

They can blow smoke in the media all they want. But watch them settle on a course that shores up the team, brings in a project QB and go into next season with Moore.
