Miami's 'intimate knowledge' a good thing

Work with me on this ...

The Dolphins hired Joe Philbin as their head coach. He was the offensive coordinator at Green Bay and so one supposes he is familiar with Green Bay reserve quarterback Matt Flynn, who is expected to be available as a free agent this offseason as he searches for a starting job.

Philbin hired Mike Sherman as his offensive coordinator. Sherman was the head coach at Texas A&M where one supposes he became very familiar with starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill is available in the coming draft as perhaps the third or fourth-rated quarterback in the draft.

General manager Jeff Ireland, meanwhile, is a graduate of Baylor University. One supposes he still has ties to Baylor, where quarterback Robert Griffin III did great work in winning the Heisman Trophy in 2011. Griffin will be in the draft and could be the first or second player selected and a target for the Dolphins if they get the hankerin' for trading up.

So, pardon me for doing a lot of supposing here, but I'm supposing the Dolphins should have an advantage over other teams when it comes to knowing and understanding Flynn, Tannehill and Grffin.

"I guess you could suppose that, couldn't you?" Ireland told me during his appearance on my radio show, Armando and Perkins on 640 Sports (640-AM in South Florida) Tuesday. "Yeah, you know, we have some intimate knowledge of a lot of different people. Obviously with Mike and Joe and my ties to those universities and obviously the work that our scouts do -- my pro scouts and college scouts and how they surround themselves with resources and people -- we have intimate knowlege of the market. And that's a good thing."

It is a clear advantage in a situation where more information is always better. Of the five top quarterback possibilities for the Dolphins this offseason, including Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, the Dolphins are ahead of the game on the three mentioned above. They obviously have work to do in gathering information on Manning and Luck, but I have serious doubts Luck is within reach so really, the issue is they know three of the likely four players on an "intimate" level.

Advantage Miami.

The Ireland interview is below. In fact, the entire 8 o'clock hour of the show is below, including our interview with Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com:

2012-01-31_0131_8am

---------------------

Ireland is aware of the comments about playing with elite quarterbacks that Brandon Marshall made following his winning of the MVP award at the Pro Bowl.

Marshall said his job was easier when he was catching passes from elite quarterbacks because they "put the ball in the right spots." Marshall also agreed with me when I said on my twitter account that if the Dolphins improve the quarterback position, they improve that position and Marshall at the same time. He retweeted my tweet.

Some of you took exception with the comments for various reasons, among them that they were a slap at Moore. Ireland disagreed.

"I don't know if it's a slap in the face at all," he said. "Matt did a nice job this year. And he's going to continue to develop as any quarterback we bring in is going to do. When you're over there and playing with Pro Bowl quarterbacks, they do things differently than some other guys. They're there for a reason. You've got the Tom Bradys of the world, and obviously he wasn't over there, but you have the Ben Roethlisbergers and Drew Breeses of the world and they're Pro Bowl quarterbacks. They play at a little different level than other quarterbacks. But that's not a slap at Matt. Matt did a great job and I think Brandon would tell you Matt did a great job."

I agree.

--------------

The Dolphins continue to fill out their coaching staff. I've been told Jim Turner, a longtime friend of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman who served as the Aggies offensive line coach the past three years, is close to being hired in Miami. I presume he will coach the offensive line.

No announcement has been made by the team. Turner has never coached in the NFL. He did coach at Delaware, Northeastern, Harvard, Temple and Louisiana Tech. He also served from 1990 to 1994 in the United State Marine Corps.

So one supposes discipline will not be an issue with his unit.

Semper Fidelis.

Mark,

We're narrowing it down.

He's not a Brother and he's not Latino.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............

(don't tell him I said this, but I'm starting to think He's a Honky-Shhhhhhhh.........)

I don't know why people are so hard on to keep first round picks and use them on secondary positions.

Learn from a team all of you will watch Sunday. NYG traded away a future first to get Eli and they played in two super bowls. Didn't hurt them much. As far as the 2nd round picks, we've been giving them away in Miami for years. Giving/wasting, whatever you want to call it. Sad when Sean Smith is your best 2nd round pick of the millenium.

Dusty...wasn't Ryan Leaf suppose to be manning as well....

what about Russel...wasn't he Manning.....

Philip Rivers was Manning

Alex Smith....

ever heard of Todd Marinovich.....

He was gonna be Manning too....

uh no kris, most all teams knew russell sucked, al davis was a moron. leaf was suppose to be good but not manning, leaf had huge ego issues and was dumb. luck is smart as they come. smith was nowhere near cant miss, that draft was awful. rivers well hes a damn good qb but wasnt considered near eli

kris, dusty knew all along...LOL!

Mark, sure you can use it, but it's not mine, it's from "The Other Guys."

Tim Couch...

David Carr....

Surely they weren't drafted #1 overall to be anything less than Peyton Manning....

kris, I know, what am I thinking, Andrew LUCK, are you kidding me? Only person worth that trade is Ryan Mallett, right?

That's why opinions are like *ssholes, we all have one.

Luckily I'm not a GM, so I can make horrible mock-trades.

so kris u wouldnt trade pouncey, odrick, davis, thomas, and misi for luck, shitttttttttttt sure u wouldnt.

shut up about flynn. we have 2 pro bowl QBs in moore and henne. henne was not the problem the first 7 games. moore went shoulda been 8-1

#1...LOL....

Dusty know Cowher is gonna be the FINS HC

Fisher is gonna be the FINS next HC....

He knows Peyton Mannings Medical status...

and he can tell us ALL....who the AWFUL players are.....

I'd trade Serena and Misi for a few gatorade buckets...

newton did not have any success at all. what was his record?

..Mark in Toronto. I know this is a point that has been beaten to death..My question for you. Say the team has nobody(quarterback) with a first round grade outside of the top 2 guys. This is possible. Would you like to see them make the push to draft a quarterback even if the team has doubts about his value? We still have a lot of time between the draft and the evaluation process so anything can happen. At nine is there a guy we should pull the trigger on in your opinion? Or would it make sense to try and trade down into the later part of the round where some of the other guys may be graded? What would you do?

Ok guys, see you all later...Father duties...Out!

kris knows henne is great, pro bowler
kris knows we will make playoffs 2010
kris knows we will make playoffs 2011
kris knows psarano will now be here for years with ext
kris is well a genius just ask him
kris knows gates will be huge in 2011, lol its get even more hilarious

Folks... I'm still NOT 100% convinced that Andrew Luck will be wearing a Colt uniform come draft day.

Just like when Eli Manning told San Diego he would not play for them and ended up a Giant. The Giants meanwhile drafted Philip Rivers and in the end, a trade was done sealing the faith.

With ALL the Patten bashing coming from the Drunken Colts owner Irsay, I am not convinced that Andrew would want to play for him. He is watching all the BS going on and the treatment of Manning and may wounder..

Hey... that could be me and also that Luck will need to win over the Manning Fans and if he messes up slightly, he will be under the scrutiny anger from the Irsay manning Divorce so Luck is almost like a child in the divorce.

The Colts most likely will draft Andrew Luck BUT... just because they pick Luck doesn't mean Andrew Luck will want to play for the Colts.

He just may opt for a lesser MESS which works better for him.

exactly montreal, anyone would do those 5 guys for luck

When you say it like that....lol.....

Tim Couch...
David Carr....

Posted by: kris | February 01, 2012 at 04:15 PM

I think Eric Kumerow was drafted to be like Manning.

(Hiccup......BURP!)

nyg we should call them up and ask them what is there price

Of course it's a slap in the face. Ireland is too stupid to know one when teammate is mocking another.

Dusty....

why do u make SH@T up...

QUOTE ME DIRECTLY....OR STFU.....

ALL of the things I have attributed to you....you have said.....

You are simply making up things....there is no need for that....and that is the 2nd time you have pulled that crap....

I respectfully ask you to debate me on the truth...and not made up items....

Odin.....

If your gonna give up picks to DRAFT a player.....

I doubt the FO is hoping for average......

lol u accuse me of making things up, hilarious

u can sure dish it but cant take it. u said all that garbage. hyped henne like crazy, def predicted playoffs. everytime they win one game u say how great they are. reality is harsh

Dusty....

REPOST IT THEN.....

I CHALLENGE YOU...REPOST IT IF YOUR NOT MAKING IT UP....

REPOST IT....

OR

STFU......

you are simply lying....and its pathetic.....

lol nice aloco, kris wouldnt want u acting as him

so kris u wouldnt trade pouncey, odrick, davis, thomas, and misi for luck, shitttttttttttt sure u wouldnt.

Posted by: dusty bottoms | February 01, 2012 at 04:16 PM

I'll raise you a Langford and a Merling.

You can have the TE's too.

(SHART...........Burp............ahhhhhhhhhh......)

Daryl, good question. Last year we were told that was the case and Dalton proved he should've been worthy of consideration. Mallett and Kaepernick, who knows? They may prove Ireland to be stupid in the future too.

If he does the same thing again this year and someone like Tannehill comes up and shows he was worthy, then obviously Ireland needs to be fired for missing so many - and that's not even considering Matt Ryan.

What I would do? If there was a QB worthy of a first round grade according to the consensus of the scouts, even if it's a late round first, I take him at 9. I wouldn't even trade down because Seattle is lurking.

But this isn't my optimal move. I'm on record as saying trade up for RG3. Trade an extra first, and extra second, I don't care. I don't even care if he's ready to start next year. If it's a miss then who cares, you will stink and you will be in position to take the next franchise Qb in a few years. History has shown that avoidance when it comes to highly touted draft picks is the kiss of death. Teams have whiffed on first round picks, taken another chance and succeeded. Us on the other hand, continue to suck the arse of the goat.

yes odin, anyone would do that trade. give the colts what they want for luck

Odin.....

Kris, I agree, I just don't know what prompted this reply.

I hope you're not refering to Kumerow as average?

I guess Odin....

Dusty....

I apologize...

PTSD must be kicking in.....

Its a football blog....and your a good contributor...... I was tripping.....

I started it with a bad attempt at humor....and it spiraled down hill from there....

peace man.....

THAT DARN CAT!

DC....

Still wouldn't make that trade.....NO WAY...NO CHANCE.....

5 draft picks....i can't see it....

fair enough peace be with us,lol go fins

Kris,

I just mentioned Kumerow because of all the busts you posted.

Kumerow was worse than average. One of the worst picks in Dolphin history(IMO).

Just for the record, I don't know what I'd offer up for Luck. Haven't thought very much about it because I figured it impossible.

I don't think anything will break the "LOCK ON" Irsay has for Luck. He's having visions of a Young Peyton and More Lombardi Trophies.

go FINS....

LOCK-ON....lol....

Odin...how do you come up with this stuff...lol....

Getting an elite QB is an impossible task for Irescum.

DB,

I would ask Andrew Lucks Father so we cant be accused of tampering.. that is if there is a tampering rule for that.

Yo Retards,
Read what Jeff Ireland had to say on NFL.com about Chad Henne:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82680357/article/dolphins-gm-ireland-qb-henne-is-smart-intelligent-tough?module=HP11_headline_stack

Sudbury Caramels offer an elegant ending to a fine repast.

I believe there are special ointments for you.

Glandular viewpoints.

Offerings of cream cheese and Wilma Flintstone's Yeast Infection will be made.

Elton John will sell roasted palm nuts in the streets of Khartoum.

Your penis is unimpressive.

There is absolutely zero shot of trading for Luck. None whatsoever.

Manning's neck issues make this a slam dunk for the Colts. There is no question that's where Andrew Luck will be playing football.

You guys still talking about him as a possibility in Miami really make yourselves sound like idiots, sorry to say.

The Phins could offer the sun, moon, and stars to the Colts for that #1 pick and it wouldn't happen. They are in a very unique and enviable position of being able to go from Manning to Luck.....I don't really think they would entertain any offer to pass up on the most highly thought of prospect to come around in a very long time. Particularly when that move would put them drafting 8 or 9....99.9% no return of Manning to the Colts and no other backup plan.

No....the Colts will hope Luck sets them up for the next 10-15 years....they're not passing that opportunity up no matter how many picks you throw at them.

wolfman, precisely.

Some of these people act as if the rest of the NFL just exists to make trades with the Dolphins that would benefit them.

The only time the Dolphins will be seeing Andrew Luck is when they play the Indianapolis Colts.

Period.

It's really time to move on from this non-issue.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRELAND IS FIRED! LETS STOP THE LOSING AND HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

When RoboHenne got injured we lost our chance for Luck.

I thought Ireland's first draft free from Parcells influence was actually quite good and have no problem with him going forward.

Sorry, but I will be buying tickets this year and will not be joining your "boycott."

that kris is on edge.

So if Ireland isn't fired and the Phins win, you'll be boycotting....just because Ireland is there?

Sheesh, offseason hasn't even started and you're already talking about losing next season.

kris with a k. hmmm.

ALoco,

Carry out Tacos from the Local Watering Hole.

There not the best in the world, but their not bad.

Gotta have a Michelob Chaser and it's just about perfect!

ValHalla!!!!

No comparisons at all to Pat White. Even Pat White's mother wants to trade for RG3 to replace her son.

Haha, excellent!
On another subject, I respectfully disagree regarding trading down to 30 to get a QB who you can easily get in the 2nd round.
We need a QUALITY pass rushing DE or outside LB, DB, O-lineman, and the best of those will be in the top 20, most likely,

Regarding Tannehill, peruse his stats and you'll see numerous 2nd half lapses, int's, bad decisions.
Nick Foles will be there in the 2nd round.

Michelob?? Flavored water. I didn;t think anybody under 70 still drank that garbage.

Lets if we pick or trade down then balance value.

..Mark in Toronto. I know this is a point that has been beaten to death..My question for you. Say the team has nobody(quarterback) with a first round grade outside of the top 2 guys. This is possible. Would you like to see them make the push to draft a quarterback even if the team has doubts about his value? Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | February 01, 2012 at 04:18 PM
-----------------------------------------------

It all depends on how much value you attach to the pick. If you're sitting there at #8 and you are looking at the type of talent there is in the top 10 this year you've got to go with the guy that can make a differenc for your team.
There would be no question if Blackmon was sitting there for the taking. Everyone would be saying, "the hell with the quarterback, take him."
The problem that arises, and Mark eluded to this, is you have other teams like Seattle who could end up pulling the trigger early and taking your guy instead of taking someone who is a higher rated prospect just because they are desperate for a quarterback.
It may happen this year with Washington. Shanahan could end up taking Weeden in the first. But, just because another team wants to do that it doesn't mean you should take the same chance.
If you take someone in the first round, especially in the top ten, you need to know he is THE guy. You don't draft for need and pick a player you have a lower grade on just because you need someone in that position.
