Jeff Ireland said that 15 minutes into Joe Philbin's first interview, he knew the Dolphins were onto something. Stephen Ross said after his interview he talked to Carl Peterson, his long-time friend and adviser, and Peterson told him it was the best presentation by a coach he'd ever seen.
Yeah, Joe Philbin apparently had the Dolphins at hello. Or at least that's the narrative today.
So how did Philbin do it?
“I put together a packet of information that I really started working on in 2009 maybe," he told me Saturday. "And I’ve been amending it and adjusting it and tweaking it for the last couple of years. But I had things ready to go in case an opportunity would have presented itself. I had really worked on it hard in the summer. Obviously I don’t have a lot of time to work on it during the season. It’s been brewing for a while.”
The packet, which Ross indicated is about an inch or two thick, is meant to show teams what Philbin is about. It speaks of Philbin's history, his philosophy …
“Yeah, expectations, values, things in my core belief, base philosophy," he said. "It’s not how we’re going to attack Cover 2 but how we’re going to run an offense. What kind of system we envision running. Are we going to be a multiple formation team. Are we going to be a no-huddle team, things along those lines. More broad based.”
After the interview, Philbin was happy with his performance. He said he got on a plane home and felt like he was flying at 30,000 feet -- plane or not.
“I though it went well, I really did," he said. "When I flew home I thought it went very well. And I thought we got along well, also. Mr. Ross and I, the first time we sat down, just the two of us for well over an hour. And we kicked around a lot of things and talked about the things he had done in his career. I thought it was good.”

As for this McCoy, Philbin and the Coordinators "flap", there could be a simple explantion.
It could be simply that Ross and Ireland didn't have enough confidence in the 39 year old McCoy, where as they did with the older, more experienced Philbin.
The misunderstanding could have been a professional courtesy on Ross' part in not having to tell McCoy point blank, sorry, after having interviewed you, we don't think your qualified enough to make these calls.
Hence, the decision to hire Philbin.
I'm chalking it up to the above, mixed in with some due diligence. They trusted Philbin to make these hires and not McCoy-NEXT!

Mando don't concern yourself with Philbin's package.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 08:16 PM
Mando kris is keeping his eyes on Philbin's package.
You need to keep you eye on the Cleveland Plain Dealer so that you can be the first to know what's happening on Dolphins after the people the Cleveland do.

Am not going to go on here and pretend like I know Mr. Philben...
However what I do know is the GB organization is doing something right.
So plucking coaches and players from them can't possibly hurt.
I like the hire (Philben), bring in Kevin Green as DC... So get Matt Flynn as QB... Get Mike Shurman as a OC... Hopefully they don't tag TE finley... If they don't then throw all types of money at him.
Draft the OT in first round and TE coby flenner in 2nd round from stanford.
Remember what our new coach said: he wants players WHO WANT TO BE GREAT... Trade Marshall NOW!!!

Posted by: Bryan Jacobs | January 21, 2012 at 08:28 PM
f4,
I agree.
Marshall, Dansby & Matt Moore are all tradeable.
Flynn won't come here though for 2 reasons:
1. His agent won't let him
2. Philbin is not going to stake the beginning of his career on Flynn because if he is wrong about him he'll be screwed.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 08:29 PM
where is dinkledork craig m to say we should have selected some other espn prospective coach of the day? why didn't we interview this dude? why not this other dude? what a shitbrain that kid is.

I guess Philbin showed his package to everyone in the presser. Good, we need someone with balls in this organization.

I was having a conversation on one blog with a couple of posters.
After making a post, a new Blog popped up. So I copied and pasted it to the new one. Just like I always do.
Yeah, that's really dragging the blog down to the sewer. Let me guess, you think we should all be like you and attack bloggers and call them names because................?

Posted by: redsky | January 21, 2012 at 08:40 PM
So I'm not entirely clear of the sequence of things that took place in NY.
On the one hand it sounds like Philbin spent the first hour showing his package to Ross alone.
So when did Peterson see Philbin's package?
Was he webcamming his package to Peterson from Ross' office?
Or were Ross and Peterson both examining the package together in which case Mando has the story wrong?
History tells me the latter is more likely.
If Mando were an elite, franchise journalist I might feel differently; but he is not and that is why this blog is mediocre.

Posted by: beezer | January 21, 2012 at 08:45 PM
If Philbins résumé is considered a big package, then I guess Mando's would be considered a "Short Story."
Posted by: redsky | January 21, 2012 at 08:46 PM
Resume, Philbin's resume, blog messed it up. Thanks Odin, I don't care what beezer says about you, you're alright!
Posted by: redsky | January 21, 2012 at 08:49 PM
Mr. Ross clearly got excited when he saw the size of Mr. Philbin's package...

HENNE IS ABOUT TO BE FRANCHISED
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 08:49 PM
On the plus side next November, after this loser gets fired, perhaps we'll be able to get a real coach? Although, probably not if dumb and dumber are still in place. And of course, if these idiots go after Flynn like he's the next coming of Marino because he had ONE good game on a much better team. If that's the case, then we won't get a good coach then either because we'll be saddled with yet another crappy retread and a huge contract. Gonna be years before we can even pretend to be competitive. Sigggggh

I'm happy for Philbin that he has a big package.
But that doesn't change the fact that we have 7 FA's and only 6 draft picks.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 08:54 PM
Salguero,
One more useless piece of journalism. You're getting worst and worst pal, like the bloggers posts. Are you dealing drugs with your bloggers ? By their comments they seem to be almost all high or stoned.

Ahh, you mean Crown Royal
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 21, 2012 at 08:58 PM
If we could trade Brandon Marshall & our 2nd rounder for Justim Blackmon and then take Reif with the 9 pick that would be huge up grade to the offense.
Give Bowles the rest of the draft picks and any cap space left to spend on defense.

LOL! You call my posts crappola, diarreah and drivel. You mention this is not a single incident. Then why are you responding and following my "stuff(LOL)" so intently?
You remind of the drunk chick on the pool table at the bar. Your laid back with your mini skirt up around your waist, telling everybody that'll listen that you're not a W-H-O-R-E ;p
If me copying and pasting my post onto the new Blog upsets you so much, why don't you just ignore me?
You don't have to prove what an idiot you are and start calling names. It only makes people want to get DOWN on your level and answer you in kind.
I wasn't being rude to anyone. You went out of your way to jump on my nads. I'll tell ya what Fella, I don't mind getting down and dirty. I'll enjoy slapping my name outcha Mouf Bu-oy!

Well, actually, I'm in Miami.
Posted by: oscar canosa | January 21, 2012 at 09:07 PM
PA,
It has to be an upgrade because Philbin has actually been among super bowl caliber players.
I don't think we even have 22 NFL quality starters on our roster. I'd be surprised if we have more than 10.
Half of our starters would be special teamers or released from other teams.
In fact that's how we got a lot of them they were released from other teams.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 09:07 PM
redsky, that's all we can do, I was ready to quit yesterday, but couldn't throw 41 yrs away. I have too much time and love invested in this team.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........!!!!
You're in South Fla. with a Bottle of Crown!
I'm stuck up here in the Hinterlands! It's been hovering around minus 5 for the past three days. Windchill of 15 to 20 below!
If that's not bad enough, I'm drinking the Cheap Stuff compared to the Crown Royal!

Posted by: beezer | January 21, 2012 at 09:11 PM
Price,
Blackmon will probably go top 5.
Would you trade your top 5 pick to someone for Brandon Marshall and a 40th overall?
It's not necessarily all that far fetched. I just don't think I'd do it.
Comments?
Price?
Anybody?

Posted by: beerphin | January 21, 2012 at 09:15 PM
deedles,
Everyone in here knows that I'm one of Chad Henne's 2 fans in this blog. TheSMF is the other one. Odin is 50/50.
Regardless Chad Henne beat Green Bay last season and Philbin stood on the sidelines and watched. Chad Henne also beat Pittsburg last season. New England. The Jets 3 times in thier 2 AFC c'ship game seasons. Henne put more yords on NE this season than any other team and he did it on MNF so everyone in America saw it.
And he's never had a running game.
And he takes a beating.
And he is the lowest paid player on the field.
And he never complains.
And he holds all of the Michigan and Big-10 passing records.
And Stephen Ross is the biggest Michigan Booster.
And Stephen Ross said Chad Henne would be the best Phin QB in history
And Stephen Ross likes Henne so much that he bought this team

No surprise man, you said it.
I never paid any attention to Philbin. I saw a couple of pictures of the guy and thought: WTF?!?!
Then I saw sideline footage of him and the presser. Suddenly I had an entirely different outlook on the guy.
It's kind of wierd, the still photos don't do him any justice at all.
Posted by: odinseye | January 21, 2012 at 09:18 PM
Price, wake up. We beat a green bay team severely injured, missing many of its starters. And big deal, chad hennewadzo never ever never ever had a winning season. born loser that boy. his last 5 starts, 0-5. you got no argument.
Posted by: deedles | January 21, 2012 at 09:20 PM
Odin, that is exactly what happened with me, but I must admit I am impressed, he seems collected and confident, hopefully it pans out.
