Joe Philbin is about the business of hiring a coaching staff right now. And while many of Miami's assistant coaches are excellent at what they do and the club denied some of them permission to interview with other clubs the past two weeks, their chances of staying seem slim now.
Philbin talked to interim head coach Todd Bowles Sunday and the message didn't exactly suggest the new coach is eager to retain Bowles. In fact, a source close to Bowles just told me the club's secondary/assistant head coach/interim head coach will not return to the Dolphins.
Obviously this can change at the last minute -- just google Chip Kelly. But Bowles is not in Mobile, Ala. for the Senior Bowl representing the team and he was told to feel free to search for other opportunities if he likes.
Bowles and Philbin are scheduled to speak again on Wednesday to finalize the plan for the assistant, but the source tells me the vibe when Philbin and Bowles talked last time was he was told he's free to find another job and Philbin would not hold him back.
The Wednesday meeting, meanwhile, is not expected to be anything formal. It's supposed to be a phone call, unless Philbin changes his mind between now and then.
Bowles, meanwhile, is going to do exactly what he was told: He has one year remaining with on his Dolphins contract. But he's going to search for opportunities elsewhere.
He's not alone. Philbin is setting a course to revamp the Miami offensive staff. I was told not to expect too many coaches to be retained from that offensive staff.
One coach who is not expected to be retained is offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo. Philbin, a former offensive line coach, wants to instill his way of doing things and he obviouslyy wants his people. He has already reportedly reached out to Jacksonville offensive line coach Andy Heck. Googs, as he is affectionately called in the building, is headed to the New York Jets with longtime friend Tony Sparano, according to a league source.
[Update: The Florida Times Union is reporting the Jaguars are retaining Heck.]
Wide receiver coach Steve Bush also leaving the Miami staff, according to a source in the agent industry. Assistant wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard's status is uncertain, according to the same source.
[Update: Hilliard has been hired by the Washington Redskins, that team announced today.]
Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll had feelers from other teams after the regular season. The Dolphins denied him permission to interview elsewhere, according to a source. While his fate in Miami has not been sealed, it is a long shot he will return to the staff, according to a source.
Daboll may wind up in either Kansas City or with the New York Jets.
A source close to linebacker coach Bill Sheridan also tells me he'll be leaving the Dolphins. Sheridan was with the team two seasons.

Daboll is good as gone.

Oops, I did it-AGAIN!
Repost:
Philbin obviously has some qualms about being "Boxed-In" as a "West Coast" type of Coach.
I'm OK with that. My interpretation is that he's very familiar with it, understands it, but won't limit what he does here with it.
Something along the lines of having the best of both worlds.
After 4 years of the Tri-Fvcked-us and despite Ireland, I don't think you underestimate the intelligence levels desired in your Head Coach.
My newest favorite statement:
We will incorporate an aggressive, up-tempo attack in all three phases of the game.
My newest favorite quote:

..I have no problem if Philbin wants to bring in his own guys..He should if he believes they will fit the scheme he wants. IMO..Go ahead and start fresh. There was nothing outstanding about any of the coaches on Sparanos staff that cannot be replaced.
Posted by: Darryl Dunphy | January 23, 2012 at 03:51 PM
He should just clean house, no way would I bring Bowles back because some players will most likely feel he should have gotten the job and it can be a source of division if he were retained...
With a 6-10 record no one IMO is safe......

Hey, good afternoon everyone...So Philbin is cleaning house? No big surprise. Every HC brings in his own people. Sparano did the same thing in 2008. Philbin is obviously a west coast offense type of guy, so keeping Daboll would of been a heck of a shocker. I feel bad for Daboll cause I thought he did pretty well with what he had. Having said that, it's time to make some changes in Miami (Again!). I like what I hear from Philbin, he seems to be very smart football coach (can't say the same about Sparano, never gave me that feeling). Let's just hope we bring in some weapons on offense and add some playmakers on defense. This team still has plenty of holes and it will take a very good draft and some key free agent pickups to make the playoffs next year. 2 biggest needs in my opinion is finding another QB and another pass rusher. Those are HUGE. WR, RT, FS, RG, TE and CB are also some areas where Miami has to upgrade.

Anyone see how quickly Sparano took that Jets job? Or how quickly JT signed with the Jets?
THIS IS A BUSINESS!!! I worked at AOL back in the day, when Time Warner took over, they brought all their big shots down to AOL and took over the top positions there. That's what happens.
I have absolutely ZERO allegiance to any Coach or player that's been here the last decade. You've done NOTHING! What, you want someone to feel sorry for you? Ex to the Next! That's how we do it when we're steeped in mediocrity.

Why would you ever work in Virginia? Terrible traffic and I always found the people to be unattractive. Perhaps you went via the Metro but it was still poor judgement on your part to work there. I hope you have more sense today.

Virginia is full of white trash and "new money" imbeciles. Far more cultured population over the river in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, etc. as well as in Georgetown and much of NW Washington.

We don't know how successful the new head coach will be, however at least we can look forward to a new style, new play calling, and last but not least playing to win and not to lose, those coaches are now with the New Jersey Jets, the best team in New York, that is if you take away Buffalo and the Super Bowl Giants, and they will still be the Jersey Jets, what did New Jersey do to have the Jets? Perhaps New York wanted some fresh air instead of hot air. Bill

The Giants have stuck with a game plan and a coach for a long time. Super bowl and another super bowl this year. Why doesn't that same philosophy apply to Miami? If Walmart changed the whole store every 3 years they would still be in whatever skunkhole they came from. Consistency is the key to long term success. I kind of wish he would have stuck with the guys that were here until they proved they could not do the job.

Darryl, I'm going to completely agree with you on this one.
Ireland and SpOrano put together a staff, hired, fired and tweaked it. They gave it a shot.
I don't think we should tie Philbin's hands in ANY WAY. Especially to a past staff that had their chances and failed.
I like Daboll and think he has a good future in the NFL. Having said that though, if he's not part of Philbin's vision, send him down the road.
If we're going to hold Philbin accountable and hold him to the same scruitiny SpOrano got, let the guy do his thing. Let the pieces fall where they may.
Posted by: odinseye | January 23, 2012 at 04:15 PM
In other words, everyone here that insisted Ireland would be forcing certain coaches on Philbin (or whoever was hired) was COMPLETELY, 100% WRONG. Just as they are equally clueless and ultimately proven wrong on virtually everything else as well.
I come here for the comedy aspect.

You can't possibly believe the clowns posting this crap are actually gay, do you? C'mon. It's no different than when some white idiot tries to "sound black" in a post. Who aside from the totally brain-dead would fall for that?
And, yeah, for the record I do happen to be gay and could care less what anyone thinks of it nor would I (or any other gay person I know) sit around making juvenile sexual innuendo posts.
Anyhow, back on track here--It'll be interesting to see how the coaching staff evolves under Philbin. No question he would like to tap into some of that Packers braintrust. Maybe Winston Moss as DC if he doesn't land the Raiders gig? He would seem ready to do well in that role based on the reviews.

Much like Reggie Bush showed his appreciation for his Offensive lineman, Eli Manning has answered in kind.
He has purchased Segways for Niners back up punt returner Kyle Williams and the rest of the ENTIRE kick return unit!
Manning was quoted as proclaiming: "The way that guy HANDED us the NFC Championship, it was the LEAST I could do!
As Classy as Eli is, I have a feeling he wont be purchasing any gifts(nor receiving any)for the New England Patriots!
Posted by: odinseye | January 23, 2012 at 04:38 PM
Philbin 9 years OC Packers.
Daboll 2 years OC (Browns Fins)
There would be something very very very wrong if Philbin thinks Daboll can help him!

Posted by: odinseye | January 23, 2012 at 04:44 PM
I can't believe this is even worth writing about. New HC means new coaching staff 99.9% of the time. HC generally has the autonomy to pick their own staff; those instances where assistants are retained are usually due to promotions from within.....or when a HC retires and management wants to keep things in tact for the most part.
I don't ever recall a franchise firing their HC and telling the next guy he has to retain certain assistants from the losing, former HC. It's just not done. So again....how is this really worth writing about?
Posted by: wolfman13 | January 23, 2012 at 04:44 PM

..Drew. Can you give some examples of posters here being critical of Ireland wanting to force his guys on Philbin? I can't recall anyone that has. Just the opposite. When Armando had posted that McCoy believed he lost out on the job because he believed the team wanted to retain Bowles as DC. Posters criticized the thought that the new guy wouldn't be able to pick his own staff..Just the opposite. IMO..Aramandos point was there has been a disconnect between the team, and it's candidates during the interview process. The candidates that were passed over, or who themselves passed. Had different stories as to what happened then the team.. I don't think anyone was critical of the team or the new coach for wanting their own guys(I could be wrong..I just can't recall any posts ripping Ireland on this front..Plenty including myself have been critical of other subjects. Not this one in particular)
