« Jeff Ireland's position with Dolphins stronger than ever | Main | On Tebow, believing and beating Tom Brady »

The combination coach is probably wishful thinking

Dolphins fans are desperate. And they're starting to reach for anyone and anything that might give them hope. So I'm getting e-mails suggesting different coaches would be a great idea as long as, you know, they bring someone else in tow.

They want Joe Philbin as long he gets Matt Flynn.

They want Mike Zimmer to run the defense as long as he brings Todd Haley to work on the offense.

They want Dave Toub if he can convince Devin Hester to come home.

While I hope not, you're probably setting yourself up for disappointment. Major disappointment.

The fact is Philbin had a good interview. A club source says he impressed. But there are questions whether he would be in position to move his family following the death of his 21-year-old son last week. His emotional state is uncertain to the point no one knows how it would affect his candidacy for the job.

And to believe he definitely can bring Flynn with him is a fairy tale.

Let's just say it right now: The Green Bay Packers are not stupid. They are likely not going to let a commodity such as Flynn simply walk out the door in free agency without trying to get something for him first. That means they may franchise him. Or they may put a transition tag on him. I predict there is no way the Packers just let Flynn go for free.

And, by the way, Flynn won't be free even if he costs no compensation. He's going to his next team to start, not to compete to start. And he's going to cost starter money. He is the 2012 version of Kevin Kolb. I'm not saying he won't perform once he gets to his next team. I am saying it is going to cost a mint to sign him and probably cost draft picks to get him away from the Packers on top of that.

I heard the idea floated Saturday that Zimmer is headed to the Dolphins because he is familiar to Jeff Ireland and he's a good coach and he also had a solid interview in New York last week when he met with the Dolphins.

But Zimmer has no more experience putting a staff together than you and me. So he might need some help with running the offense, which suggests perhaps Haley would be a fit.

It is plausible, I guess.

Haley's agent is also Jeff Ireland's agent. I'm sure the idea has been floated for Haley to get an interview of some sort. But if the only job available is an offensive coordinator gig, the thinking among league people is that Haley probably would be most comfortable returning to the Arizona Cardinals.

And that's assuming he's not going to the New York Jets.

The point is Haley has options.

If this sounds pessemistic, please rethink that. It is reality. Maybe lightning strikes and the Dolphins can get Zimmer and Haley or Philbin and Flynn.

But lightning hasn't really been striking on the Dolphins' behalf a lot lately.

new coach wanted philbin does nothing in gb, and u cant just assume flynn comes here because philbin does

dusty bottoms, finally someone that understands. All very true.

I remember when Marc Trestman was a coach for the Dolphins and the Dolphins offense sucked. The brilliant move for that season was to trade for A.J. Feeley. Trestman was assistant head coach and the QB coach. Our QB play was pathetic. Trestman couldn't even get a job in the NFL.

Yeah. Lets make him HC... sounds like a winning idea.

I applaud Arizona, and am not a fan despite living here, for taking a shot on Kolb. At least they had the stones to try. The notion that there is no sure thing picking a 1st round QB is ridiculous. That mentality makes for a lot of 6-10 seasons. Take away every 1st round pick we have made for the past 10 years and what have you got? The same thing! We're still sitting at home come January. So nut up Ireland and do what it takes this year.

chris dont give up on kolb yet. been one season

dusty,

Is this so hard for you to grasp? (1) You obviously don't have any idea of who Philbin is or what he does, and (2) no one assumes selecting Philbin automatically results in us getting Flynn.

What we know is (1) Philbin is an offensive coach with a great resume, who has produced results, is able to teach younger players, knows the offense, teaches that offense, and creates the gameplan, (2) would bring that offense to Miami and get us into the 21st century, and (3) if we were able to land Flynn, would ease the transition and result in more immediate success.

Flynn isn't necessary but he would be preferred since he already knows the offense and other QB's would need to learn it hence delaying its effectiveness.

just saying, Nolan has a great draft record while HC of 49ers.

first round picks:
2005: Ales Smith (took Gore in the 3rd)
2006: Vernon Davis
2007: Patrick Willis

the team was slow to develop but no denying Mike deserves some credit this team headed to the NFC Championship game. IMO, should definitley be on the list of candidates.

Zimmer? Huuuuuum, WELL WE MIGHT AS WELL CHANGE THE NAME OF THE DOLPHINS TO THE COWFINS, HERE WE GO AGAIN! NOW IT CONFIRMS THAT JEFF ISLAND WAS BEHIND REFURBISHING DALLAS COWBOYS ALL ALONG.

FOLKS WE ARE NOT HEADING ANYWHERE ANYTIME SOON AND IT IS OUR FAULT, WE NEED TO STOP BUYING MR. ROSS MERCHANDISE AND STOP ATTENDING TO GO THE GAMES, HE WILL UNDERSTAND THAT WE NEED A GOOD PRODUCT.

Philbin, Fisher, Chudz, Einstein, Allah, God nor Lady Gaga will get this offense going anywhere without a top QB. Flynn won't have another game like his last one for the rest of his life.

new coach who says flynn wants to come here!! wake up dude. and philbin DOES NOT come up with the game plan

Phiblin & Flynn are not a guaranteed package....Miami ain't going to hire Philbin just to have a better shot @ Flynn...

Miami needs more personnel/coaching from the U like Pagano, Schiano, & CHud.....& bring in Calais Campbell.....

This Mike McCoy has a real impressive resume as well....I like him...

dolfanSF,

Why did you do that? The Dolphins could have selected Willis, do you remember who we picked ahead of him instead? Still makes me sick.

The problem is Nolan couldn't get his overall team to play. It underperformed. Sound familiar? Look at the Dolphins D for the first 8 games.

None of these hc options are worth a dang. Star players make star coordinators. Stick with Bowles and move on.

chud would be interesting, short but solid resume

Nolan didn't do a good job with the 49er's he was 18-37. You're right he drafted Alex Smith, who hasn't been great, and passed on Aaron Rodgers who played over the bridge from San Francisco in Berkley, and who was raised in the Bay area.

dusty,

I didn't say flynn wants to come here and, yes, Philbin does come up with the game plan.

You posters have a serious reading issue. No one has ever claimed Philbin and Flynn were a package.

philbin does not do the game plan. mccarthy is all over the offense im not a fan of nolan

BTW I know who Philbin is, and he ain't that great. Joe Philbin was hired as GB's OFFENSIVE LINE coach in 2003. He was promoted to OC in 2007. The offense is Mike McCarthy's offense, and Mike McCarthy call the plays. He has never been a HC at any level, and his expertise as a college coach was the offensive line. That sounds a lot like our previous HC. BTW Tony had the title of OC in Dallas 2 years prior to joining the Phins but had his playing calling role taken away from him. The next year he became the Cowboy's Assistant Head Coach....no long OC.

tony never had the title, but did call the plays for a year

Well, as nobody wants to give an opinion, I'll give mine. RG3 MIGHT transition well into the NFL but definitely not next year. If he's there when we pick, I would rather go with a can't miss, immediate impact Athlete that fits our philosophy. (would love Dont'a Hightower on our side).

oscar your insane, if rg3 is there (which he wont be) then course u take him. we have to find our qb

IF THEY HIRE ANOTHER DALLAS COWBOY CAST OFF I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL GIVE UP ON THIS FRANCHISE AND BECOME A GIANTS FAN.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, AT THIS POINT, TWO OPTIONS:

PHILBIN OR BOWLES

IF ITS BOWLES, LEAVE EVERYTHING IN TACT AND GIVE HIM A SEASON AS HEAD COACH AS SEE WHAT HAPPENS...
IF HE DOESN'T PAN OUT, LETS LOOK FOR BETTER COACHING OPTIONS NEXT SEASON.

I DO NOT WANT ANOTHER WAIVER WIRE COWBOY FAILURE. WHAT'S WITH THAT ANYWAY? COWBOYS HAVE DONE SQUAT IN 20 YEARS...

michael,

Try reading some more about Philbin. If you think he sounds like Sparano, you are missing more than a few details.

Of course, since you know he ain't great and are obviously an astute judge of qualifications, please explain to me why you aren't a GM and why all those people (employed in the NFL) who speak highly of Philbin are wrong.

dusty, we can't afford to miss on a Dont'a type of player(which would help make life miserable for Brady) waiting for RG3 to develop. Just because Robert is mighty intelligent does not mean he's going to come in and shine as our QB right away. If it was Luck, then that's another story. The emphasis is on winning, as of right now.

new coach who speaks highly of him. even the raiders new gm from gb has no interest in him. not head coach material. but yes i understand he is number one on our list, just hope he turns us down also with the garbage of ireland as gm. ill take zimmer or chud and move on

New Coach Wanted, what am I missing. What have I posted that isn't true. Tell me more. I'm not a GM for the same reason you aren't, I don't have the expertise, just like you don't. But I can give you facts unlike you. Please POST what I missed ok.

osacr rg3 would start and yes would have growing pains, so what. we have to have a qb

we're screwed... PERIOD!!!!!
Cohwer didnt want to come out the booth neither did Gruden... Fisher picked StL over Miami.. Last yr Harbough went to SF. i bet if the NYG job was open Cohwer would wanna coach again and run to it.. this Dolphin organization has lost a ton of respect around the league. these arent for sure your daddy's Dolphins of yester year.. its sad that its come to this, what was once a proud franchise.

this team now has to settle for asst coaches.. no experience.. 2nd level options for head coaching.
what have they done to my favorite team.. makes me sick!!

Oh, and while we are at it,

I like this statement "it is McCarthy's offense."

So pray tell,

Why did that offense not perform well until Philbin was named the OC? Why was it after Philbin was named OC, did Favre play better than he had in a decade? Why was it only AFTER Philbin was named OC did the Green Bay offense go on to be a prolific scoring machine?

According to some of you, it is because Philbin does nothing. Now THAT is something to LOL about.

We should think about getting Brady Quinn from Denver on the cheap. Also Wade Phillips is out there. He's better than Fisher.

Different approaches, dusty, both with equal validity at the moment.

We will regret giving up Sparano and Henne. Wait and see.

I give lots of facts. Many of you don't know what a fact is... dusty for instance. Lets look at his BS fact machine:

1) Philbin does nothing.
2) Even the new Raiders GM wants nothing to do with him... not headcoach material.

Well, this is almost too easy.
1) We don't even need to deal with because it is so obviously wrong.
2) The fact is the Raiders GM is interested in Moss (personal relationship) and did not say one thing about not wanting Philbin nor did he say Philbin was not HC material. Dusty said "not headcoach material" because he has trouble understanding the appropriate inference to be drawn from a given set of facts. Further, the Raiders were interested in interviewing Philbin as were the Chiefs, the Dolphins and others.

wade philips is an awful head coach. quinn is beyong awful, lol love your sarcasm though

lol course he didnt say that. come on man be real at least if your gonna argue for the sake of it. and henne is horrible. and ill love watching sparano sink the jets even lower

I love it. Now some moron decided to impersonate me. Too bad he has the intellect of a gnat or he would have noticed I routinely point out Brady Quinn as an example of those too dumb to think and have never suggested Wade Phillips was good at anything and always criticized Sparano.

We will regret giving up Henne, however.

A New Coach Wanted poser. How funny.

New Coach Wanted, that's not true. The stats don't bear that out. There were only 2 years of offensive slippage in GB, 2005 and 2006. Prior to that GB's offense was 4th in 2004, 4th in 2003, 2 in 2002. They slipped in 2005 and 2006, but that had more to do with injuries, and coaching. Sorry man you're wrong again. Oh, in 2007 they 4th in 2008 they were 8th, 2009 3rd, 2010 10th, and number one last year. Pretty consistent with and without him. Check the stats.

michael of course hes wrong, but he knows this. hes basically a radio show host playing the other side. we need some fin fans in here, its dead. lets talk real fin football! where is everyone

New Coach Wanted, and no one said he does nothing, that's a child's argument. He's just not the best candidate.

Anyone who thinks RGIII is another Cam Newton doesn't know football. He is a pat white or mike vick and is too small to be effective in the NFL.

Sorry michael,

You are wrong. I have posted the facts previously on this and provided references to review. There are literally dozens of sources to learn about Philbin as a candidate and all praise him. I am not Philbins agent so I am done with pointing out his qualifications. Everyone can feel free to demonstrate their lack of knowledge over his qualifications from now on. I will just amuse myself by laughing at them. An excerpt:

"Philbin was promoted to Offensive Coordinator in 2007 and helped Brett Favre turn around a two-year skid in which Favre was as impressive as Matt Moore. After two years in which Favre finished with QB Ratings of 70.9 and 72.7, Favre finished with a QB Rating of 95.7, the highest rated season in a decade for Favre. Favre finished his only season in Philbin's offense 4,155 yards, 28 TDs, and 15 INTs. Favre was also sacked a career low 15 times. The Packers' offense ranked 2nd in the NFL, their highest rating since 1983. The Packers finished with 5,931 net yards and 435 points, both ranking fourth highest in franchise history."

"During Philbin's four years as Offensive Coordinator, not including this season, Green Bay has scored 1,703 points and turned the ball over only 83 times, both franchise records for a four year period. The 83 giveaways are 2nd in the NFL to New England over that time period. The Packers have also set franchise records for postseason points scored in three of Philbin's years as Coordinator, with 42 against Seattle in 2007, 45 at Arizona in 2009, and 48 against Atlanta in 2010. Green Bay has ranked top ten in points scored and yards in every season under Philbin."

What about Dave Wannstadt for HC?

Michael said:

"New Coach Wanted, and no one said he does nothing, that's a child's argument."

You are wrong and I am offended. Here is the proof. Now I expect you to apologize for suggesting I lied and expect you to tell dusty he is a child.

"new coach wanted philbin does nothing in gb"

"Posted by: dusty bottoms | January 15, 2012 at 11:02 AM"

Yeah and they were 4th in points in 2004 and 2003 so what. There was no difference except in 2005 and 2006 like I said. What is that I said that wasn't factual. I used points scored as the category, you used yards. Points win games.

RG3 doesnt have an NFL skill set. Doubt he's taken in the top 15-20.

Not only do we need a new coach, we need some new fans. This group sucks.

2004 GB was 3rd in yards, and in 2003 they were 4th. What's the improvement.

Not even sure Chud wants to work forIreland maybe that's why they will not interview him...also does Ireland ever talk to the media..dude seems like he is always hiding

Ireland isnt fan or media friendly. Always hiding like the weasel he is.

I agree that nolan should get at least an interview. I also think now that the saints are done carmichael jr should get an interview as well

For the 10th time....NOLAN DOESNT WANT THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!

If Nolan gets offered a DC position anywhere else he's outta here.

michael are u still talking to this clown?? he knows philbin didnt do anything for the offense, he juts takes the other side to argue. if u said philbin was great he would of said hes awful

One of the things that bother me about a new HC is that he might want to do an overhaul of the Team and lose valuable time. I believe that, at this moment, we only need a tune-up.

good riddens nolan. ireland has to hide with all the death threats he is getting

michael,

Its there in black and white. Don't pick individual stats and claim your point is valid. Favre had his highest rated season in a decade after Philbin was named OC. Green Bay ranked second in total offense - their highest ranking since 1983 after Philbin was named OC. I could go on but man, it is clear as day. I believe you can do better - at least you will point to facts.

You say Philbin isn't the most qualified, what candidates are out there better than Philbin? What candidate statistically has a better chance at getting us to a Superbowl than Philbin. Use facts.

Finally, I still expect my apology for you insinuating I was lying. I provided the proof where the statement was made. It is incontrovertible. Man up and apologize. And tell dusty his arguments have the reasoning of a child.

TUNEUP? TUNEUP? THIS "TEAM" NEEDS A TOTAL BLOOD TRANSFUSION! LOL

dusty,

I have been consistent and factual.

Your arguments are childish, entirely manufactured, and demonstrably false.

Its that simple.

I'm talking Players wise, Ron Son.

New Coach Wanted, I'm saying he didn't make a difference, and your stats point that out. Look at team offense and scoring.
