Joe Philbin will be the Miami Dolphins next head coach, The Miami Herald has learned.
The former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator has been offered the job and he will become the Dolphins 10th head coach. He will inherit the same office once occupied by Don Shula.
He will also inherit a position that saw such failed efforts as the tenures of Nick Saban, Cam Cameron and Dave Wannstedt. As Philbin has never been a head coach, the Dolphins are hopeful Philbin will be a success.
But they obviously cannot know for certain.
Philbin is expected to fly to South Florida Saturday, reunite with owner Stephen Ross and the rest of the Dolphins hierarchy with whome he last interviewed on Wednesday, and afterward would sign a contract. Terms of that deal are still not available but a source said the deal is for no less than four years and "consistent with league norms."
A press conference will be held after Philbin signs his contract on Saturday.
The Dolphins failed last week to land first choice Jeff Fisher, who opted instead to join the St. Louis Rams and has become one of the richest coaches in the NFL, earning upwards of $7 million per season. The Philbin contract is likely worth about half that amount annually.
In picking Philbin, the Dolphins have a coach whose past is similar to that of former coach Tony Sparano. Philbin was an offensive line coach with Green Bay as Sparano was in Dallas. Philbin was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay but didn't call the plays just as Sparano held muted play-calling duties in Dallas before coming to Miami.
Philbin had never been an NFL head coach before coming to Miami. Sparano was never an NFL head coach before coming to Miami.
Philbin wins a three-man derby that also included interim coach Todd Bowles and Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. There have been whispers that Miami would like to offer Bowles the defensive coordinator job and that is still possible.
But a source close to Bowles says that has not been discussed with Bowles or his representation.

Armando Stitz is a douche bag....just sayin'.

JJ,
What do you base your opinion of "fantastic hire" on? Please, enlighten me. The OC that doesn't call the plays? WTF? I just have one question, what did Philbin do at Green Bay? I hope all you optimistic fans are wetting your drawers. We just blew up a 6-3 team that was scoring a lot of pts. in the last half. If we open the 1st half next season scoring 15 pts. while we are learning a new offense, we better hope whoever the fu.k our D-coordinator is knows his sh.t and can hold our opponents to 14 pts. I have not liked this coaching search from the start. Havibg said that, I am on board and rooting for Philbin. I really hope I don't have to suppress an "I told you so" at the midway point this fall.

And by the way, I don't think Flynn is a s good as Moore. Flynn was in a good system with a lot of good players. Personally, I think Henne could have scored with GB, so don't assume we will get Flynn and he will start. Moore is a good fu.king QB!

First my opinion is, if you are going to state your opinion and then throw out fatcs, make sure they are accurate.
Second, how come I just got this vision of R. Bush ripping the league a new ahole next year.
Posted by: ESPNsucks | January 20, 2012 at 10:23 PM
People who worry about Flynn being a "system" QB are kind of missing the point.
We are about to be running his system so...
even if he is a system QB, it's ALL GOOD!
DOH!

Stillhardcoredolphinsfan,
I agree with you, what I am going to keep an eye on, once FA starts is how hard we go after Matt Flynn. Philbin coached or was around Farve and Rodgers so he knows what a quarterback must have as far as skills and attitude in order to be great.
So if he wants Flynn we know he has "it" if he doesn't want Flynn then we must move on...

This is as exciting as the Cam Cameron hiring!
Posted by: MJ | January 20, 2012 at 10:28 PM
Philbin has one year from me, he either turns the team around, like Harbaugh with the 49es, or he fails. Sink or swim!!!

I LOVE IT! Reggie's got to be excited about the offense next year.
He proved he was NOT used well in New Orleans, and I suspect he will BLOW everyone's mind next year.
Posted by: finsfan72 | January 20, 2012 at 10:31 PM
Just like if you take brees out of that dome and city he probably won't do what he is doing there. So many people flashback and whine about miami not grabbing brees. I'm not saying they shouldn't have or he wouldn't have been good here. But that he does in NO would happen in Miami, in my opinion. Opposite for Bush, I think this is his spot.
Posted by: ESPNsucks | January 20, 2012 at 10:37 PM
I doubt this guy will be better then Sparano.

Posted by: redsky | January 20, 2012 at 10:46 PM
If we don't blow up or revamp the entire team then I expecting 9-7 or better. Better play calling and coaching would have netted us 3 wins or better last season.
Go Phins!
Posted by: grondz | January 20, 2012 at 10:49 PM
Let the OC, DC, FA and draft play out.
Weak schedule, could be a good year coming.
Not resigning NT, running 4-3 could open up cap.

Posted by: Armando Stitz | January 20, 2012 at 10:51 PM
This is the same horrible team as it was last night.
You people need to think like a businesman:
-If Philbin brings in the QB then whatever happens is his fault.
-If Philbin goes with Moore/Henne and it doesn't work out it's Jeff's fault
Posted by: Moore Is Less | January 20, 2012 at 10:53 PM
The one positive thing that can happen is at the end of next season Philbin can tell Ross how many players on the roster are NFL quality players.
Personally I think the number is about 10 players.
That's why a guys like Olshansky & Columbus can come in here and vault over evrrybody on the roster into starting roles whent hey couldn't even hold on as backups on thier previous teams.
Posted by: Moore Is Less | January 20, 2012 at 10:58 PM
"No,no,no,Mark; your job is to protect the quarterback, not get him killed." - Joe Philbin
Posted by: Professor Lou | January 20, 2012 at 11:01 PM
"Mark, did Tony have anyone teach you how to block while he was here?" - Joe Philbin
Posted by: Professor Lou | January 20, 2012 at 11:04 PM
So here is the timeline as I see it:
2012 season: we'll probably end up with the number 1 pick, but at the end of the season Philbin can throw out all of Ireland's trash
2013 season: 4-6 wins but without the need for trickery or homofery
2014 season: a solid 8-9 win season. Now we're ready to bring in a franchise QB and be a contender for 10 years.
Posted by: Moore Is Less | January 20, 2012 at 11:04 PM
I personally never thought Sporano was a bad coach. he won a division when he had a consistent qb with Peddington. Since then he has had junk and inconsistency at qb....thats Ireland's fault. Truth is this team this year could have won 10 games with a good qb. Sporano is gone ...we move on...Philbin is in ..maybe he can get a qb. I said it years ago that Wanstadt set this team back 10 years when he passed on Brees. I will always be a Fins fan no matter what.
Posted by: Simon, NY | January 20, 2012 at 11:05 PM
Wanny did set us back picking Flectcher instead Brees. Who knows how different our team could be right now. Brees first couple of years were not the greastest. Thats why they SD drafted Rivers. Our fo might of let him go as well. But just think of would it might of been.

mlb2007atla ,
Agreed with your 10:25 PM post. I can only wonder why it is with our team that we seem to change, or draft at positions we don't "need" to. Case in point, last year we trade up to draft a RB (Danile Thomas) when we had Ricky, who, by the way, is not old in RB years. he did quite well @ Balt this year backing up an excellent RB in Ray Rice. Why didn't we go after a player/position of great need? Say, safety, TightEnd, OLB, CB (although I think SS and Davis excelled when allowed to play man-coverage this year), Right tackle?? Now we go after an offensive-minded HC, who runs a completely different system (West Coast). Now, I am not against that, but Daboll (IMO) did an excellent job this year without much of a training camp and over the last 9 games started puttting pts. on the board. So, I think he's gone and Philbin, who is an OC who doesn't call the plays takes over, we lose an excellent DC in Mike Nolan, now who is our DC? I hioe at least 1/2 the team gets to maintain CONTINUITY and we hire Bowles as DC. Who knows what happens, but forgive me if I'm not all sh.ts and giggles over the HC hire.
Posted by: stillhardcoredolphinsfan | January 20, 2012 at 11:18 PM
I would still give Moore a shot.
Flynn is probably going to be this years Kolb. Bring in Flynn and let the two fight it out. Wont happen.
They said that Ireland wanted McCoy so he probably wanted to keep Moore for another year also.
New coach has to go with his man Flynn and Blackmon with Marshall and company would probably turn out pretty good.
Really worried about the D. Seems Miami can never get the two units going at the same time.
Go Dolphins! Welcome New Coach!!

What's up Bro's,
Heavy heart my old man passed of liver cancer, I'm always usually at work or online on this sight talking football but it all took a back seat for me this week. It's funny how life puts things in perspective, my old man was the reason I love this game, he took me to the very 1st meeting between the Dolphins and Bucs at the old SOMBRERO Stadium in Tampa back in 76.
He was with me for Marino Vs. the Bills at the old ORANGE BOWL. We were there for Marino religion ALL of 84 with season tickets, I will truely MISS that Fin fan. In regards to the hire of Philbin, let it be known, he will be gone quick! The hire of Philbin feels of "B" rate. The man never ran the O in G.B. He was a caretacker for H.C. McCarthey who calls the plays, Ross F'cked up again thinking that the laymen half az football fan would eat it up with their "B" RATE Celeb. owners.
Posted by: fin4life | January 20, 2012 at 11:26 PM
I'm pretty sure Matt Moore is better then Flynn.
Posted by: Craig | January 20, 2012 at 11:27 PM
Fin4life, sorry for your loss. Maybe he can guide the Fins from up above.
As for Philbin, he was the best of the 3 they hired. That doesn't make him the right choice. Ross again swings and misses. Unbelievable!!!!

Can't anyone be positive or does it just make you feel better to whine....geeeesh !!!
Posted by: mike martin | January 20, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Ross wanted a younger Don Shula, he got his wish. Shula is 80, Philbin is 50, theres a 30 year difference.

DID I SAY PHILBIN WILL COACH THE DOLPHINS TODAY ?
I WANT YG TO ADMIT THAT I BROKE THAT BEFORE ALL.......
I SAID EARLY TODAY BEFORE GOING TO WORK .....
HOW CAN WE PASS ON A GUY WHO HAS BEEN GREAT OC FOR GB AND PICK A DENVER GUY ?
Posted by: ALoco | January 20, 2012 at 11:48 PM
Philbin knows how to read defences and attack them. Unlike the Fist Pumper who ran 80's style offence. Three yards and a cloud of dust.
Posted by: Roach Clip | January 20, 2012 at 11:49 PM
You called it Loco when others were saying McCoy all day.

Posted by: fin4life | January 20, 2012 at 11:54 PM
shula71,
I read your post and be careful not to make too many assumptions about who we bring in, etc. We have a good core already in place (Moore at QB for instance) and to assume Ross dumps mant millions on an unprovebn FA QB is a big leap. Personally, Flynn may be the next Tom Brady, but I feel he is a product of an offens with several tears of CONTINUITY. CONTINUITY is a word that the Dolphins FO has not bought into for several years now.
Posted by: stillhardcoredolphinsfan | January 20, 2012 at 11:58 PM
fin4life condolences.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 12:00 AM
IF Flynn is the the product of a system. He is our guy since we will be running that system next year.
Posted by: Roach Clip | January 21, 2012 at 12:07 AM
I have nothing against Matt Moore he is what he is. One thing he is is a QB that has never beaten a winning NFL team.
Miami beat Green Bay in 2010 with Henne at QB and Philbin stood right there on the sideline and watched him.
Henne also beat Pittsburg last year. And Tomlin watched that. He put more yards on NE this year than any other team and Belechick watched that. He beat the Jets a total of 3 times in the 2 years thet went to AFC c'ship game, and every Jet fan cried over it especially Mike Greeneberg from Mike & Mike.
All of those winning NFL coaches know firsthand that Henne can and has beaten thier teams with the horrible talent that we have. Keep in mind that in 2010 neither Ricky nor Ronnie had even 1 100 yard game.
HENNE IS GETTING FRANCHISED.
MATT MOORE GOT MCCOY/FOX FIRED IN CAROLINA AND SOPRANO FIRED HERE. MATT MOORE IS GETTING TRADED.
Devlin can handle the backup.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2012 at 12:12 AM
Our main concern should be on what kind of D we will run next year and who will run it

Ps. Ireland please keep your mouth shut while you interview any potential people for the Dolphins. Then open it again and get fired.

Salguero,
Maybe Philbin and SparAnus are similar, however, while the former has been a world champion and knows what are the ingredients and the pieces to got there, the latter is a fart champion, who came from a messy Dallas, and who knows a damm thing of how to be a winner. His first season was just a fluke that gave us terrible bad hopes.
By the way, I remind you that your sources were telling you that McCoy went to be the HC. So come on man, don't try to justify your mistakes as a journalist.
Posted by: marchcool | January 21, 2012 at 03:38 AM
Salguero,
I forgot to mention that "rumors" coming from a good journalist come always true (because in fact they are never rumors but facts-to-be based on research) while those from a bad journalist are actually that, just rumors, based on speculation and bad research, my friend. So you should better check your sources, pal, before posting your wild whispers.

Good Luck Coach Philbin:D
Now maybe our offense can score some points and do it CREATIVELY.
LETS GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Dolgirl Smiling BIG | January 21, 2012 at 09:06 AM
Mondo, thank you so very much comparing Philpin with Sparano. Philpin has been the OC for the GB Packers, not the line coach for Dallas. Big difference. Good hire. And he's not ole fist pumper.
