Why Marshall's MVP award in Pro Bowl matters

Brandon Marshall was ballin' late Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins wide receiver took over the Pro Bowl and scored four touchdowns -- on catches of 74, 29, 47 and 3 yards -- and set a record with six catches for 176 yards.

No biggie, right? It's only the Pro Bowl, right? Nobody cares about the Pro Bowl, right? Do that during the season when it counts, right?

Well, right ... and wrong.

Look, Marshall obviously did his best work in a game that doesn't count, winning the MVP award and making the Dolphins organization look good. And, yes, we all wish he would do this kind of work in games the Dolphins are playing.

But the point I'm making here is this game gave you a view of the possibilities. It showed you what Marshall might look like if he had a Pro Bowl quarterback throwing him the ball every game. Argue all you want that players were going only half-speed, but in that game of players going half-speed, Marshall was still the best player.

Argue he had a Pro Bowl receiver on the other side, helping him, but you must still admit he was the best receiver on the field. And you cannot dismiss the fact every receiver was working against a Pro Bowl secondary. Every one of them.

And in that venue, in that sitiuation, Marshall was still be best receiver in the game.

So I submit that if the Dolphins someday, perhaps in 2012, give Marshall a Pro Bowl quarterback to work with, his work definitely would look better.

How do I know this?

Irving Fryar was mediocre in New England for years and years and he came to Miami to play with Dan Marino and suddenly he was a 1,000-yard receiver. Nat Moore's career was left for dead when he played with Don Strock and David Woodley.

When Marino came on the scene, Moore's career was suddenly revived.

The point I'm making is simple: A better quarterback makes the receiver better. Even Marshall admitted that after the game.

"Since Jay Cutler I've had a few different quarterbacks and being in the Pro Bowl you have these elite quarterbacks and it's all them," he said. "They put [the ball] in the right spots and make it easy for me to make the catch. It's all the quarterbacks."

Brandon Marshall was on his way to the HOF until he met RoboHenne.

..This could be stretching it here, and I don't want to sound like a Marshall apologist. He has dropped to many passes the last 2 years, he would admit this...

i just wonder if part of the problem is that trust factor. when you are thinking instead of playing, the space between your ears gets in the way of what your natural talent. What I'm saying is that when you do not trust that the ball is going to be delivered on time, and to the right spots..mistakes happen. There has to be a reason that Marshall couldn't catch the ball. I don't believe he has stone hands, something is going on deeper then this.

When a reciever and QB are in sync, this rarely happens. Look at Roddy White in ATL..He led the league in drops this year, as the offense was different trying to incorperate Julio Jones. His responisbilities were different..The result..Drops.

Bsck to my point about the qb and reciever being in sync. When you can play without having to think, just react..you play better. I said this is a reach...I'm just trying to make sense of the situation.

Tgh is clearly retarted comparing Pat White to a QB who is known for accuracy like RG3 and was voted higher than Luck.
Then silly people think Philbin will trade Marshall after 4tds yesterday.
We need a real QB. All he did was prove that!

Mark in Toronto, sorry I'm getting back to you so late...Was busy...To answer your question, yeah, a few players caught my eye...The one player the Dolphins HAVE to take if he falls to them is Quentin Coples...This guy is the real deal...I don't think he will be available for us but if he is, they HAVE to get him. This guy is the real deal. I can just imagine him and C.Wake as our DEs. Wow! I have a feeling Jacksonville or Cleveland might get him before our pick...He is some freaky athlete!! He's the next DeMarcus Ware imo...

I just want to know what the plan is gentlemen...I don't think that is to much to ask for....

Jeff Ireland is criticized mercilessly on this blog....

Let on of the RG3er's walk up to Mr. Ross and say....

"Boss...i wanna trade the farm for RG3....

If i'm Ross...i would say....OK...and".....

AS IN.....

AND WHAT IS YOUR PLAN?????

So what FA do you plan to target iks fn leu of our draft pick for the next 2-3 years....give me names...and projected price tags....

what acorns are you gonna draft n the later rounds that will HAVE to be PLAYMAKERS....if we are gonna have a prayer at competing....

ARE YOU WILLING to resign if this doesn't work.....

Is the HC n board....cause I will want his signature as well....

This is NOT Fantasy Football people.....

You need a plan....a realistic plan tp convince the OWNER...and the FANS that this IS/WAS the right move....

For all the criticism (some fair, some ridiculous) the fact is Brandon Marshall has put up some of the best receiving numbers in the HISTORY of the Miami Dolphins.

It's amazing to me how many simply don't recognize that or toss it off as no big deal. Marshall is hugely talented---and has put up great numbers, too.

Agreed he would do more with a better QB. :Let's not also forget, though, that his performance may help GET that guy since they were watching the game, too.

Justin Blackmon will not make it past the Rams.

B Marsh is a top 5 WR period. Whoever doesnt think so can Go F themselves!

2 LB's that also caught my eye...Bobby Wagner from Utah State and Cam Johnson from Virginia...They could get picked in the 3rd or 4th round and would compete with Koa Misi to start...I'm not really sold on Misi...Johnson has good size and plays a physical game...WR Joe Adams, from Arkansas, is like Devone Bess, has that ability to make defenders miss but the difference is he's FAST. He's also a very dangerous special teams player.

#1, Seems like instead of jerking off on strippers you actually did something else and watch the Senior Bowl. Lay off the lotion sometimes.

HA!!! Ohio, Work has changed a bit for me, so there is less blog time. I am containing myself as I hope it is a forgone conclusion he will go and be someone elses problem. Hopefully the Jets, so he lines up against Wake every game!!

But lets be honest. Someone better claim Columbo now, because it is going to take him about 2 months to get out his current 3 point stance to get there.

kris, you have a point. The only hope for Miami is that Flynn is as good as advertised...Philbin knows him better than anyone so that's a big +...If that doesn't work out, Matt Moore will start again and the Dolphins could draft someone like Tannehill or Cousins, but these guys aren't ready to start in the NFL just yet. That's the best possible scenario. Peyton Manning would be nice, but a lot of people including myself think that he's done. If that's not the case, sure, Miami should go after him. But that's a big "If"...

lol....had to give you a shout out Poizen.... I remember some hilarious posts out of you the morning after some of those Fin games.....after your buddy Columbo forgot he was supposed to block :)

I dont think RG3's skill set translates well to the NFL. He would've been a 3rd rder last year.

I don't doubt that Philbin likes the idea of having someone like Flynn around who knows his system, and can hit the ground running...
However...
Philbin also had Rogers as his primary, and should all the more understand and appreciate the difference between pretty good, and all-star QBs. So unless he's willing to settle for pretty good, I would guess he'll be lobbying for the next Rogers to run his system for the foreseeable future, and pave the way for his head-coaching tenure.
At least this is what I think he thinking.
Hope so.

Wes Welker n Brady

Clue, I love you too...And we all appreciate the football wisdom you bring to this blog...Thank you so much...And keep it up please...

He got 1000+ yrds even w/
Henne That shows how good he is... He makes others better. No doubt if he had another WR who was a real threat It'd open up coverage a little bit and he'd be unstoppable 1vs1 Marshall almost always wins

Kris, I think giving up an extra first and seconds nd won't be crippling to the team long term. Whether that's what the price is, I don't know. But just saying look at prior first and seconds on this team, not a whole lot of impact, a top qb definitely has more impact than an odrick and Sean Smith for example.

I do agree with one bring though, last year was a missed opportunity. The main reason I hated our draft so much.

I honestly think that the other QBs on the board will have better careers than Flynn. Maybe not next year but 3 for instance years from now rookies like Tannehill, Cousins, Osweiler, ect. have more potential to be staRs. Some scouts believe Tannehill a top 10 prospect and that he will be the most surprising QB this year. Gil Brandt is one of them...

One guy the Dolphins could draft to replace Paul Soliai is DT Alameda Ta'amu from Washington. This guy is HUGE and had to be double teamed quite a lot. Nobody can push this guy backwards, he's quite the load. He figures to be a 2nd round pick...So far...

Kris, as far as a plan, you simply are going to bite the bullet for a year or two. Getting rg3 is not about winning next year or two years from now, but its about winning for ten years plus. Short term pain for long term gain.

DC,
yeah, the stats are not under the team page. You need to follow the 'Players' link and then look them up alphabetically.

Here's the link to Colombo's page:

Long's:

http://hosted.stats.com/fb/playerstats.asp?id=8778&team=15

totally agree with you on that Kris...

Remember Mike Sherman coached Tannehill at Texas A&M so Tannehill is good possibility as well...

beerphin, excellent point. 2 of Miami's options have been coached by either Philbin (Flynn) or Sherman (Tannehill). That's a big advantage...

#1 Im just pulling your yank. Wait that doesnt sound right

I like Tannehill's prospect over Flynn. I think his strengths are really going to show at the combine. He's fast, strong, played WR great when he had to... He seems to have good intangibles. Yea he didn't finish the year off strong but I think he will only get better so my vote is Tannehill if they can manage to figure out a tradeback otherwise I'd pick Defense 1st rd Luke Kuechly MLB to complete our 4-3 Linbackers.

beerphin...I agree. To the layman (me) he has great intangibles. I like the way he runs (when needed) and the fact that he has the perspective of a WR.

Cmon football nerds I need help here. What QB's stood out in the Senior Bowl?

Darryl,

When I posted that Marshall is like a T.E. I say it because he works best in the Center of the field and underneath routes, then muscling players with his strength to go after the YAC. Youtube tape of him in Denver and you'll see what I mean with him taking 10 to 15 yard catches in the middle of the field brushing the CB or Safety off and zig zaging his way down field for a score.

Alot of that was because in Denver there were legitimate threats opposite him which kept the double and sometime triple teams off him allowing him the space to brush his guy off and giving him green grass in front of him to roam. In Miami since our other WR's aren't threats to really take over on the other side, be it that the best other player D.Bess is a possession WR and Hartline is up and down and drops a ton which factors into team's rolling entire coverages his way.

We need a QB desperately and it goes without saying but IF we don't get another WR and seam T.E. In order to begin to properly take advantage of teams with duel Offensive weapons then you can sign D.Brees who is a FA at this point as well and I highly doubt we become an Offensive juggernaut over night. If we can't land one of the QB's in the draft via trade then with all do respect to Matt Moore and his aspirations we need to bring another couple of arms but not loose sight of the needs with skill set players across the boards either.

Kirk Cousins was the best QB at senior bowl this year. Brandon Weeden impressed b4 game but then threw 2 ints but I'm not sure how important that is seeing they never play together...

Cousins?? Hope were not even looking at him. This QB class sucks without Jones and that punk Barkley.

Mark...thanks for the response...but this year...i don't know if that gets it done....and if teams start reaching in to our draft pockets for a 3rd rounders and such....then we will really start to feel the heat...

I agree...drafts in the 1st few rounds haven't been great...but then again...we were working off of the Pracells model.....now we will be working off the PHILBIN PHILOSOPHY....and it comes with an updated footbal manual...

If we don't give RG3 any weapons...then he will turn into Henne...and we will be calling for his release in year 2 or 3....I don't want to see that....

I think we are in great postion to make strdes @ th QB postion WITHOUT giving up anything....other than Ross's money...

Philbin knows wether or not Flynn is worth it...so he will persue if he IS...and he won't if he is NOT...NO GUESS WORK THERE....

SHerman has inside scoop on Tanehill...another block checked....

Moore can play...and maybe be servicabnle to hold down the fort until the RIGHT QB falls into our lap...like BIG BEN for PITT....or Flacco for Ravens...or Rodgers for the Pack....or Marino for us....

I think we can win withou giving it all up this year...or the future....

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. Pro Bowl football is like sand lot football. The best athlete is going to win out. Marshall is a great athlete no one will ever question that. But pro football and a pro offense are quite different. If you put Marshal in NE; with their elite QB and that precision offense he will have the same impact as Ocho Cinco. NONE! thay are both cut from the same "me first" stock. Until he learns that he is what is holding him back and not his 6 previous position coaches or QB's he will never reach his full potential.

Im thinking maybe even w a genius trade down getting us not just one 2nd rder but maybe 1 next year or a 3rd and a 4th... 8-9 is a pretty valuable draft spot look how much atl gave up to get jones. We could land Tannehill late 1st rd, and get a weapon on defense and offense in the 2nd this year.

Dan Marino was 27th overall...

Moore Chocked BIG TIME in the Dallas game....

He also looked scary against NE....

but he played well against TEAMS HE THOUGHT HE WAS SUPPOSE TO BEAT.....

IMO...that is a condidence issue....and if Philbin realizes he can't do better than Moore...the he had better gush all over him like Harbaugh did for Alex Smith....

Get his confidence up....let him know that it is HIS team...no competition from Henne...Henne signs as the back-up ONLY....preferably not at all...

Make Moore a captain...and hold him accountable...and make him accountable for others....and then we will truly know what we have in Mr.Moore....

But I only do that IF...i know I can't land anything better...

Blackmon won't be there, but if he was.....

Thats what I'm saying Beerphin...

I think we will have to build this team up strong enough to the point that our true franchise QB falls to us late in the 1st rd....probably in a few years....

Kris, I was not ignoring you buddy, just working.

"I'm not being sarcastic....i'm just asking you to show me a way to trade up for RG3...and not blow up our future for the next 3 years...."

You are really making it sound like it is complicated and we have to blow up all our pics, etc. Teams trade up for higher picks all the time. To move from 8 or 9 to #2 or #3 I would GUESS, on what I have heard, 2 first rounders, this year's and next, and something else; a future 2nd, 3rd or B. Marshall. What's so hard about that?

I have watched our team blow draft pick after pick, especially 1st rnders, the last decade on LBs, OL, DL, DE, etc, etc. What has been the one position we haven't aggressively gone after in the draft, QB! What are we missing all these years, QB!

Your plan;

"Moore can play...and maybe be servicabnle to hold down the fort until the RIGHT QB falls into our lap...like BIG BEN for PITT....or Flacco for Ravens...or Rodgers for the Pack....or Marino for us...."

Really, until the RIGHT QB falls into our lap? How has that been working for us the last 13 years? Big Ben and Flacco were traded up for. Marino was a miracle.

So you can wait on a miracle. I say decide who the stud QB is and have conviction and go get him!

Personally, from watching Flynn in college and a small sample in the pros, the kid has a weak arm and I can not see him competing with the Brady's and Rodgers of the world.

I believe RG3 is most definitely POTENTIALLY better than Flynn to become a stud QB.

keep waiting for something to fall into your lap...

he dropped 9 TDs this year

Clue,

The article didn't mention which players were complaining, other than Marshall, just said something general like, "He [Brandon Marshall] wasn't the only one [who mentioned something lacking in Moore].

Blog Fodder, thanks, I'll check it out.

911....good points...thanks for the response...

I will have to address them a bit later...cause.....

I'M OUTTA HERE (off work).....

Fin4life,

Me, "Duper and Clayton do not happen without Marino. No doubt, the whole team is better with a stud QB."

You, "Alot of people would argue it was the other way around or more of a 50-50 proposition. In Marino's 1st few outings in 83, the 1st being a Monday nighter Vs. the L.A. Raiders he didn't exactly impress with Natt Moore and Joe Rose as primary targets.

Really, who are these 'Alot of people'. To say that Marino's success was 50/50 due to Duper and Clayton is a really dumb comment. especially coming from a Finfan for life? wow. And then you site Marino's FIRST GAME? c'mon man.

Simply, how did Marino do after Clayton and Duper? Marino raised everyone's success on those teams; Bruce Hardy, Moore, O.J., Dureil Harris, Joe Rose, etc, etc, etc. Not the other way around. Don't get it twisted. Now, I would agree Joe Montana was a product of the system and players around him.

Marino carried us for years over a decade.

Irving Fryer made Marino

No blitz, Only four players in the secondary, no stunting, no contact within 5 yrds, and you can only rush 4 players.... I would say the offensive players have an advantage. Why not just make it flag football!! No way you can judge any players success in a game like that

Hire Paul Boudreau for Offensive Line Coach. Just compare Ricky Williams' first season with the Dolphins to his second season. Also look at sacks against. His second season was under Tony Wise as OC coach. Also look at Carolina Panthers 2002-2003 season under Tony Wise as OC Coach and compare it to Carolina Panthers 2003-2004 under Paul Boudreau as OC Coach. You'll note the improvement. Boudreau was responsible for shoring up Atlanta's O-Line and creating an O-Line with a nasty reputation.

Whatever happen to our real franchise LT Todd Wade anyone know?

Darryl @ 12:20 +1

You guys realize you have to be pretty good to get voted in to the Pro Bowl, right?

Cousins?? Hope were not even looking at him. This QB class sucks without Jones and that punk Barkley.

Posted by: Clue | January 30, 2012 at 01:36 PM

Yep, it does...Tannehill could be this year's version of Andy Dalton though...Sherman knows what it takes to succeed in the NFL and will give his input to Ireland I suppose...But aside from Flynn and Tannehill, not many options out there. It's also important to keep in mind we're NOT the only team looking for a QB, so it makes it that much harder...The Redskins are rumored to have strong interest in Tannehill...

Clue, he retired from the NFL...

He was a decent LT

Methinks Ireland is a firm believer of building thru the Draft and I would find it hard to believe if he traded our 3rd 2nd or 1st pick in order to move up.

Armando,

I cant believe that you wasted article time on one of the most comedic all-star games in the history of sports...

the pro bowl doesnt give anyone any insight on what players can and cant do....

it has jokes for rules and is so offense friendly that they should just have mascots as referees, Marshall showed up where 90% of the NFC defense did not.....congrats to him but please for the love of god, dont read too much into this performance.....and how many drops did marshall have again this year???*lol*

C'mon man!!!

superPHIN, The point is he's still the best WR we have even with all of the drops.

off to lunch homos i mean homies

See, you can already feel the impact of good Coaches placing Players in their best positions according to the scheme.

He was a right tackle.

And as far as tannehill goes, don't sleep on Seattle not drafting him. Won't be able to trade too far down if he's the guy. And if Washington doesn't pick him either.
