Why the Rams are favorites to get Fisher

At no time have I told you on this blog what I think is going to happen with the Jeff Fisher search. I've told you what, in fact, is happening in the news. I've told you what is supposed to happen next, based on facts.

Now let's go a step further. Let me report to you that of the five sources I've spoke to on the topic the past three days, four told me they expect Fisher to go to St. Louis. So there's that.

As for my opinion? Allow me to give you that now based on what I know:

I spoke to a very highly placed Dolphins source late Thursday and was told the Dolphins are optimistic they will get Fisher. But they don't know. Not really. Not at all.

So the Dolphins don't really know if they're getting Fisher or not. They hope they are. They simply don't know and the Internet report saying they think they're getting Fisher is probably overstating the issue.

Me?

I don't think the Dolphins are getting Jeff Fisher. I think he'll end up in St. Louis. Furthermore, the only way I believe Fisher comes to Miami is if the Rams somehow blow the process of hiring him. If the Rams play this smart rather than play it like they've performed on the field the past decade, they simply have the better opportunity for Fisher.

In St. Louis, Fisher has the ability to mold the franchise's structure. He would have say over the hiring of a general manager. He doesn't have that in Miami. In St. Louis he will have a quarterback in Sam Bradford that is younger and has more long-range potential than Miami's Matt Moore. If Fisher is not sold on either quarterback -- a possibility -- he'd have a better opportunity to find a pedigreed replacement in St. Louis because the Rams have the No. 2 overall pick. The Dolphins, who own the eighth or ninth pick depending on a coin toss, likely will not have a chance to pick either Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III.

In St. Louis, the No. 2 overall selection can be used as trade bait and it would bring multiple first-round picks in return -- perhaps from Cleveland, which has two first-round picks this year and wants a quarterback (RG3). The Dolphins can trade down from their spot but it will not bring an extra first-round pick this year.

The Rams have more salary cap space than the Dolphins.

The Rams play in division that does not include Bill Belchick.

The quarterbacks the Rams have to beat to win the division are Tarvaris Jackson, Kevin Kolb or John Skelton, and Alex Smith. The quarterback the Dolphins have to beat to win the division is Tom Brady.

St. Louis owner Stan Kroenke is a known quantity. He owns the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche as well as the Arsenal football club of the Premier League. He does not interfere with his coaches. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is a less known quantity. He doesn't currently own other sports franchises and it cannot be said he is like Jerry Jones But Ross did at various points involve himself in the team's quarterback search last season.

Miami's advantages over St. Louis?

It's simply nicer here. This is a bigger market. The overall Miami roster is deeper than the one in St. Louis, although the Rams defense is already built with 4-3 personnel while Miami's defense has been built since 2005 with 3-4 personnel.

Fisher runs the 4-3 defense.

Good, don't want Fisher would rather have someone like Chudzinski or Tom Clements.

Tim,

You are a loser.

Ross and Ireland have blown it.... for the 2nd straight year!! Destined to settle for the scraps left over, again. Geez, even Todd Bowles stillhas a chance at this rate!!

I think it will show something about Fisher's character if he chooses the Rams because of the softer divisional rivals. In which case, he can have them.

Half of this rubbish. Sam Bradford has PROVED NOTHING! The Jets and Bills both SUCK.And about cap space you do know if Miami don't resign Solai they have virtually the same cap space as the rams? Also why the hell would they draft RG3? NO ONE wants sam bradford as he is proved nothing. Anyways i dont really care if get Fisher or not hes nothing special but half of this nonsense is truly ridiculous the rams are the 2nd are arguably the least talented in the NFL. Miami aren't just deeper they have better players in EVERY SINGLE position on the field....

I can't blame the Phins if they don't get Fisher, I think they prioritized him as they should have, went well with the interview as far as I have heard, and hey, they tried. If he honestly believes that the lowly Rams are a better opportunity, best of luck, I don't want anyone here that isn't "feeling it" anyway...
Major disappointment, but hey, Phins fans are getting used to that over the past 15 years. And read that the Jets and Dallas are looking to get Sparano, lol, but he's got a free year next season with Miami footing the bill, so I don't see that happening...
Anyway, there are possibilities beyond Fisher, so if he lands elsewhere I guess we just try harder.

if ross offers 10-11 million a year he will come here make it rain stephen ross boss ross otherwise it's crickets next season and a fanbase that has had enough of the dolphins mistakes!

of course St. Louis gets Fisher, why would anyone with 1/2 a brain come to this god forsaken hole of a city. best thing they could do is move the Phins to a city that cares and put our lame know nothing sports 'reporters' scurrying from under their rocks...

mando nobody cares if the rams win but people in st.louis the dolphins are a global led fanbase you will be loved if you can bring the dolphins back to the top of the nfl landscape jeff fisher ....if he picks the lambs he is stupid plain and simple miami has a better roster they will contend in 2012 with matt moore or whoever is playing quarterback and the afc is more wideopen than the nfc for years to come so we are going to see how much football knowledge jeff really has.

mando why on earth are the dolphins not calling brian billick? he deserves an interview and in my mind the job if fisher passes it's fisher billick or bust for you ross or i'm done with the miami dolphins!

Why doesnt Ross get it that it is not about money with Fisher?? It is about control. He wants a GM he is familiar with, he wants to hire his own staff, things Ross does not want to give control of.

I do not think Miami needs to move, they just need for Ross to sell the team to someone who actually knows the game of football. Who was not just a spectactor at a couple of games in the OB.

He wants Ireland to be his GM. Ireland is the one who is wanting to go after assistants, the same assistants other teams are going after. Maybe he should go by his input since he trusts him so much to give him such control. If not then hire Peterson to help with the team and get it over with.

To Bryan in Ohio:

My thoughts exactly!! I will still root for the Dolphins if they don't get either Fisher or Billick, but I will be mad if they at least don't give Billick an interview.

I did have a thought last night about the coaching search. What if Ross and Ireland hire Joe Philbin, OC for the Green Bay Packers? He will install the same offense in Green Bay and on top of that could give the Dolphins the edge in signing Matt Flynn, who will know the offense inside and outside after knowing it as a back-up for the last 4 or 5 years. Does anyone besides me find that intriguing?

Do share some thoughts, for I want to know what fellow Dolphins fans are thinking....

why the hell are they wasting time with a loser like Mike Mularkey and not interviewing Brian Billick?

Tim is your IQ or shoe size the largest number.

Great move if we miss on Fisher. His loss is Dolphins gain.

Same with Wayne, u wonder how he and Ross ever built their Empires in business.

This business now is 75% QB and 25% HC.

Ross only u can change things.

Heaven help the Dolphin Nation.

Fisher may go to the Rams, however, he has no chance of bringing down San Fran who are built really well, young, and have Jim Harbaugh...just there LB's alone are not just Pro Bowl'ers but ALL-PRO.....

Arizona has QB concerns but they have a RB, a HOF'er WR, and a real good defense....

Seattle is in between...

And in conference, let's see if Mr. Durable Sam Bradford has what it takes to out duel all the young QB's like Rodgers, Brees, Cutler, Stafford, Manning & Ryan even Freeman...good luck to him....and oh yeah, Steven Jackson has at the most 2-3 yrs left as the Rams have absolutely just wasted his talents in their inherent mediocrity....

AFC young QB's - Flacco??, obviously Big Ben, Rivers and Schaub.....Manning & Brady I give 2 -3 more years....AFC East - Buffalo????, the Jets have an aging D, & the Pats, well, they are almost done...their entire roster is porous & when Brady retires, Welker will be real old which just leaves them with the Gronk & Hernandez....their D is a LAUGHING STOCK....

If Fisher doesn't really want to be here then he should not come....I commend Ross for making the effort and he should then concentrate his efforts on Mularkey, Jay Gruden, Chud, Toub, PHilbin & Mike Sherman...if Miami does well in FA & the draft they WILL be better.....

PEOPLE!!!! GIVE UP ON BILLICK IT IS NOT HAPPENING!!!! He is not on teams wish lists including Miami because he has been openly critical of many teams. That is a turn off to many teams. I have heard him rip Miami apart and I am sure they have to. Who wants a coach who has been openly critical of bashing their franchise?? I dont....NEXT!!!!

I'm not a huge proponent of Billick but there has to be a deeper reason we are not aware of why he seems to be blackballed from getting interviews. Don't believe simply that he's arrogant is enough to disqualify him from the position. If that were the case half the coaches in the NFL would have never been interviewed.

Oh yeah, MR. ROSS DO NOT give Fisher the king's ransom.....he ain't worth it.....

@Aaron,

The DOlphins should not care what the fans want or think. Personally, that is what Wayne did. The fans wanted Shula and Marino gone. what did we end up with JJ and his cronies and no consistant QB.

Its funny how these fans will want this coach or that coach, tell them who to draft, who to sign, blah blah blah..When they cant even go to a game and fill the seats.

I think it is best to let them do their jobs and find someone.

Atleast give this FO some credit so far. They are taking their time with this. Bringing in guys other teams are interested in too. They are TRYING to find the right guy.

GET OFF THEIR CASE already!!!! Sheesh

Fisher is the most boring prospect out there. I hope we dodge this bullet and he goes to the RAMS.

Also too, these owners in Miami need to stop caring so much about what the media and the fans want. Pick a guy that fits their system. That is hungry, good leader, who wants to win, and will be a commander on and off the field.

The fans wanted JJ, they wanted Saban, they wanted Cam, they wanted Sparano. I think these owners need to stop paying attention to what the fans and the media want and get a coach THEY want.

So far, the guys the fans have wanted have not panned out.

ARMANDO TALKS ABOUT FUSHER AS IF HE'S THE BEST AND ONLY HC IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.........

WHO SAID ST WILL HIRE HIM OR WHO SAID THE DOLPHINS ARE DYING TO HIRE HIM ?

WHO SAID THAT THESE TWO TEAMS ARE DYING TO HIRE HIM ?

I

When we first started considering "superstar" coaches the conversation was about Cowher and Gruden.

Fisher has probably been about as successful than Dan Henning. The best thing that could happen is for him to go to St. Louis where we might never hear about him again- just like over the last 16 seasons!

C'Mon man!

Yeah and Mularkey was such crap in Buffalo...whatever. So what??? What did he have to work with there??? Seriously. What has he done in Atlanta other than put together a good offensive system, and also helped Matt Ryan improve.

Look at Belicheat for example. The dude totally sucked with Cleveland. He went to NE, got ahold of a video camera, changed a few rules in the NFL, and he is a genius. Go figure.

Sometimes a second chance can pay dividends. Who knows...

Not high on Fisher... He's about as conservative as Sporano was. In the NFL of today, you have to score points, just Defense obviously isn't winning games anymore. I'd like to see us take Jay Gruden, Philbin, or Chudzinski. All have an offensive background and have proven they can score on offense. Keeping our Defense with Nolan and a few more players and we'll be good. We just can't over reach for anyone in the draft like we've done in the past.

People on here want to talk so much about Billick but yet do we see other teams knocking down his door??? Nope. If he was THAT good, and THAT respected in the NFL, why has he not had a job by now??

Makes you think doesnt it?? Sorry...Dont want him.

Also, Fisher is a good coach. Just Bud Adams was like Al Davis when it came to getting the talent Fisher needed consistantly to win. But you know, Fisher was given an opportunity that is rare in the NFL. Longevity. That says a lot.

Think about that too. If he was that awful of a coach, then people would not be interested in him, he would not be highly regarded around the league and he would not have been a coach for 16 years. That says something there.

MIKE
NOLAN WILL OUT IN THE NEXT 2 WEEKS,TO START CLEAN HOUSE FOR THE NEW HC ..........

Good. I dont like Nolan much anyway. I think he is overrated at DC. It had to take him nearly half a season to get his defense prepared to play football after working with the same crew for the past few years???

Look at all the games the defense blew in the second have and 4th quarter alone.

He has a bad attitude. He doesnt get his way he wants to pack up and go home..Sorry, goodbye then.

Who you gonna get, the guy from Tampa Bay??? Why would you go and get a losing HC from somewhere else when you have a system and DC in place.
Gotta put more pressure on QB and be able to cover TEs. 4-3 defenses don't have LBers on field to do that, we absolutely need another stud OLB. Melvin Ingram from USC is a BEAST and we could use him. Go U-Tube him and look at his highlights.

AND PLEASE ;;;;

BRIAN
COX.............. IN HIS FIRST YEAR AS A DC HELPER HE STARTED WITH ...0-7 ............ JUST BEAUTIFUL ............

QUALITY COACH ? WHAT QUALITY ????????????????

(( THE CELLAR QUALITY ))

IWANNABEGM............ PLEASE STOP USING THE WORD BEAST >>>>>>>>>>>

Really?? WHY???

Attacking me for using a word, grow up... you don't know me. Go to You tube and look at the guy. Easily one of the most dominat DE/OLBs in college today who is coming out.

First team All-American and first team All-SEC after a phenomenal senior season in 2011. Ingram led the Gamecocks with 13.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks. He also intercepted two passes, was credited with six quarterback hurries and scored three touchdowns, including a 68-yard scamper on a fake punt.

I use the word if I choose and this guy is the best in the country this year a BEAST!!!

Ireland's presence is going to help the Dolphins in this scenario......albeit by accident. Fisher's proven what he can do with a 16 year body of work to review. He's nothing special.

Hire a Philibin, Chudzinksi or a Carmichael type (assuming they have the chops) and see what they can do. Time to move forward.

I WANNABEGM...........

I DIDN'T ATTACK YOU at ALL ...I LOVE READING YOUR POSTS ..........

I AM SORRY IF I OFFENDED YOU ,BUT PEOPLE WHO USE THAT WORD (( BEAST )) ,THEY ALWAYS TURN OUT TO BE MIDDLE SCHOOL DROPOUTS ..................

You guys making up words as you read??? Don't know that you saw me put QUALITY in a post? Where are you all reading this???

THAT QUALITY Q WASN'T TOWARD YOU ,I WAS MAKING FUN OF OUR EX HC'S SON WHO'S THE QUALITY COACH OF THE DOLPHINS ........

ROSS EITHER GIVE FISHER 10-11 MILLION PER YEAR OR RING RING BRIAN BILLICK!

10 MILLION MY AZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

TRY ,350,000 A YEAR ....

Copy, I know what you mean. I don't use it often on guys, but this guy shows up in big games as a man among men (better phrase for you)??... :-)

He's the #1 OLB prospect coming out this year and performed big in big games in the SEC the last two years. Reminds me a lot of a more athletic James Harrison, says he wears #6 because he scored so much in HS as a TE.

Great athlete... and we can use him.

Gotcha. I looked through the threads for something about quality, couldn't find it and saw the DC piece, so thought it was on me. Sorry about that.

IWANNABEGM.......

MY POSTS NORMALLY NEED HIGHLY EDUCATED BLOGGERS TO UNDERSTAND THEM ..........

1. "If the Rams play this smart rather than play it like they've performed on the field the past decade"

2. "St. Louis owner Stan Kroenke is a known quantity"

Are you talking highly educated or mind readers... :-)

good riddance. find me a young hungry coach that hates losing and keep the same team and we'll win 10 games next year.

BOTH ,HIGHLY EDUCATED AND MIND READER ..............

WHAT DOES (( BEAST )) MEANS ?

Here's a Hummmm for you all... Name the only common thing between Parcells, Belichik and their Superbowls??? Romeo Crennell as a part of the defense as a LB and DC coach. Neither has won a SB since he left their teams.

Not advocating hiring him, but just saying both are overrated for their defensive prowess. Looks like he's been the man with them both.

Is there a guy like that out there we're overlooking if Nolan isn't the guy we keep as a DC???

You forgot that Ross doesn't like bidding wars.

Bottom line, we need a coach that can match wits with Belecheat. They even brought McDaniels back. He will probably be the heir apparent to Belecheat. Josh is a really good coach. He just got caught up in Belecheats nonsense so he got a bad rap from day one.

Oh yeah, we also need a coach that likes to practice until they get it right. Rain, sleet or snow, practice until its right. Not just alright. Can you say Marty.

SATURDAY IS VERY GOOD DAY FOR BLOGGING,YOU DON'T SEE ALL THESE PEOPLE POSTING NOVELS WITH NO VALUE IN THEM ......

AL would agree, but then again, the NFL games haven't started and other than FCS College ball, nothing else is on TV...

Jay Gruden please...

With Ross/Ireland, it an absolute miracle Fisher has narrowed down his selection to two and andb Miami's still in that equation. That only speaks volumes of Miami's chance of landing him. Based on this alone I absolutely would not be surprised if Fisher said yes to the Dolphins.

Irleand/Ross, the chief reason Miami shouldnt even be in Fisher's final 2 selection, seems to be a hurdle he's already overcome. So the primary reason for saying no has already been overcome. Get ready for Fisher Miami.

Irony of all Ironies!

Parcells, the Trifecta and EVERYONE he brought to Miami turned out to be, not JUST progress stoppers, but FRANCHISE STOPPERS!

Parcells and his entourage fullfilled one of his own favorite catch phrases. NICE!

Ireland, SpOrano, Hennings, Pasquloni, that Special teams excuse of a Special Ed Coach. Ultimately and most fitting, The Big Stinking Tuna Himself! All Franchise Stoppers!

If thats not enough, it turns out two of his most coveted HIGH drafts picks were major progress stoppers right off jump. Henne and Pat White. Brilliant!

Don't look now, but it **APPEARS** to me that the last vestiges of Parcells merry band of Franchise stoppers is still at work.

I'm not saying Fisher is the Be All, End All must have Head Coach. But, I would like for us to get him. When it's all said and done, if Fisher ends up signing with the Lambs, I think the Ireland Factor will be the blame.

Thanks Bill, you are what your legacy says you are. A Farnchise Stopper.

Thanks Jeffy, for carrying on the Legacy.

(SIGH................................)

On the other hand, Ross may have never expected Fisher to say yes. Fisher may have been his smoke screen to keep dolfans from whining about naming Eric Mangini new hc. LOL

I say give the OC of GBay a chance and then we have the inside track for Flyn and run the same Offence that Flyn knows that would be our best chance keep Nolan and our D in tacked with Fisher he blows up the whole thing all over again 3 loosing seasons at best

Mangini is the guy we havent heard about interviewing or scheduled to interview. Its a little scary, but, expected. Mangini's already in Ross' circle. He doesnt have to interview to say yes.

If Fisher says no, I wouldnt be surprised if Mangini is the last interviewee, and says yes. If this happened, I would expect it was part of a hidden Ross agenda all along.
