... And another thing that makes Manning wrong choice

A couple of days ago I made the case why I'm not too fond of the idea of the Dolphins signing Peyton Manning to be their starting quarterback in 2012.

I'm not done.

Moving on from Manning's health questions, his age question, his eventual decline, his being a short-term fix at best when the quarterback problem requires a long-term solution, I've come up with annother issue to ponder as I continue to swim upstream on an idea the Dolphins apparently are intent on developing.

I was reminded by a former coach yesterday that adding Peyton Manning to your team can become a royal pain in the posterior.

The point was made to me that whatever team Manning joins will have to make concessions for him. The team will have to run an offense he's familiar with to maximize his talent immediately because, after all, he's going to be 36 years old and time is short. No time for him to learn a new system and get comfy in the system and start to produce maybe late in the year and maybe next year.

In the Dolphins case, that would likely mean new coach Joe Philbin and offfensive coordinator Mike Sherman learning a system Manning is comfortable with rather than the other way around.

So let me get this straight: The Dolphins hire Philbin because they admire his work in Green Bay. They like the Green Bay model. They like the Green Bay system. And he hires buddy Mike Sherman, who was at Green Bay and feels a kinship with Philbin and the system he wants to run.

And having all that familiarity available to them, the Dolphins would scrap it all to make Manning comfortable with a system similar to the one he's run the past 14 years? They would make Manning the de-facto offensive coordinator?

One of the advantages everyone assumed the Dolphins would enjoy by hiring Philbin was expertise on soon-to-be free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, who played under Philbin in Green Bay and is obviously familiar with that system. Assuming Philbin wanted to make some tweaks to the system, the foundation was still going to remain and Flynn was going to enjoy a head start if he joined the Dolphins because he is very familiar with that foundation.

And the Dolphins are simply going to turn their back on that?

That would be better?

I have to say this: The reason everyone knows the Dolphins are enamored with the idea of signing Peyton Manning if he becomes available is because owner Stephen Ross loves the idea. And he's the boss. He is apparently going to make this call come heck or high water.

Everyone knows this as fact because Ross has let his feelings be known on the subject.

But no one knows how Philbin feels about it. Nobody knows general manager Jeff Ireland's opinion on the subject. Don't they get a vote?

Do Miami's football men have the ability to say 'No' to the owner if all their football wisdom tells them to go in a different direction away from Manning?

Now, I suppose it is possible Ross spouted his opinion on chasing Manning after careful consideration and conversation with both Ireland and Philbin. (For Miami's sake, I hope that's the case.) But knowing the Dolphins as I do, my guess is no such conversation took place before Ross indirectly made his desires known.

Despite my worst fear, perhaps such a conversation eventually takes place and Philbin and Ireland are all in on Manning. (Something that will cause me to wonder about both men, but that's another story). At that point it won't be an issue that Philbin might have to subjugate his system for one that fits Manning. At that point it won't be an issue that ownership is dictating which quarterback the team must chase first before checking with, you know, the football experts. Those points would be moot.

But it still raises the question: Why have such a logical connection to a young quarterback after hiring his coach and then going in a totally different direction with an old quarterback? Is that fair to Philbin?

And will it work?

This all reminds me of the Brees/Culpepper fiasco, and I'm not saying that anybody knew Brees was going to turn out the way he did, or Culpepper. I'm not claiming that Flynn will be the next Brees, but, there's far less risk, and if he does work out we get more than one or two years. If he doesn't, you cut him and no worse off. Flynn is the ONLY logical choice if you can't trade your entire draft for Luck.

Further, whatever the WRONG decision is, I'm convinced the Dolphin's will make it.

You are right about this one.

But since we will all be screaming for Philbins head in a season or two, and then screaming to hire Manning as head coach, well golly gee jingles, we better hire Manning now.

Holy crap, what negativity! I guess 10+ years without a playoff win does that to people. I think we are set up for success next year. Good coach, good QB prospects in Manning, Flynn, Moore... they'll draft a QB. Not to mention have you seen our schedule for next year? I hope we don't have to endure these downer comments til August again... winning again is just around the corner boys! Until then, take solace in the fact that the Pats didn't win the Superbowl :)

I believe in Philbin. I have more faith in him and putting in a system than I have doubts and worries that the owner will ignore it and continue with bad decision-making. It is clear that Ross is desperate himself and wants a winner, yes. But I believe he spoke without thinking and will relax once Philbin and Ireland sit him down and lay out the post-season personnel plan.

The chance we have here is a good one. Properly done, we will end up with a real winner of a team and regaining the Dolphins culture of winning. Don't undervalue what is happening right now: this is more than just another coaching change. You are looking at the implementation of a system in Miami. And it cannot come soon enough.

Expect Matt Flynn and/or another young QB to come in and get this offense installed as a package. And smile for a change!

Good article Mando

The most worrying aspect of his situation is the current owners need to provide his commentary on what the Dolphins need. I long for Ross to say I leave hire the best football people I can and empower them to make the football decisions. Without any input from unqualified outsiders - ownership included. I seem to recall the previous ownership having strong opinions on this.

I think there is a little paranoia here. I don't see other landing spots for Manning, such as Arizona, Washington & Seattle totally trashing their current offenses for a "Manning" offense. I'm sure there would be tweaks but no overhauls. I'm sure Manning knows whether he stays in Indy or not HE is going to have to learn a new offense. He's been in the league a long time & watches as much tape as Zach did if not more, I think he can adjust in 6 months. I'm not saying he's my first choice, but I'd rather have him (if healthy) than not. My preferences are in order: RG3, Flynn, Manning.

Don't understand why everyone is so high on Flynn.. but if Philbin goes after him hard, we def should be on board.
I am intrigued with Tannehill, think he has a HUGE upside, but needs a year or two to develop. see what Sherman really thinks of him this April.
Maybe that's why they're going after Manning, to give the future franchise QB time to develop..?

Forget manning, forget flynn. If these yo yos had any sense at all they will draft rg3. Bottom line!

It has nothing to do with sense. If the Colts or Rams don't draft him, there will be a huge bidding war to trade up. Our competition has more to offer, including a higher pick.

I listem to Armando every morning and the negativity is absolutely suffocating. thats not going to change the result of a new coach, regime, and possibly qb.stay positive. it will help with that blood pressure problem. GEEEZ MAN

It is foolish to assume anyone knows what the FO really thinks about anything. This time of year its all spin. It's against their interests to let out or leak out anything they really think.

OK any dolphin fan who says no to peyton manning is a retread switch some letters fellas.

The man signed a 5 year deal beginning last year he wants to play for another 4 years and go out on top.

Our team is a FS and RT away from sb if we add Manning jesus we can draft that this year next year trade the bank for BArkeley and be dominate for the next 15 years. Anyone who doesnt mant one of the greatest QB's of all time is simply stupid or gay.

Other than Flynn any QB will have to learn Philbins system and any coach is going to tailor the system to the QB he has. Who says Peyton can't learn a new system fast enough? If rookie QB's can take their team to the playoffs then Peyton can switch teams and do the same - just like Pennington did.

One more thing how many black QBs won the superbowl?

SO NO TO RG111 swear to god if we draft this loser Im rooting for the girliest team I can find.

Whats wrong with you people, Manning is a HOF QB and a top 5 QB as of present. With the talent Miami has now, Manning could take the to the big dance. Wake up people, this oppurtunity dont come around to often. Manning is a for sure thing.

I mean we already said no to Brees now Manning can fall in our lap and we can draft the best Tackle in the first round. You kidding me?????????? I swear to god if somone who says no to manning is a dolphin fan come to WV ill slap some since in you then hook u up with some hot skanky fat chicks!!! yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh BIG BOOBIES!!!

Oh yeah I do agree with one thing, this Armondo guy is always negative. He is a Dolphin hater.

Ross is way over his head. Everything he has done over the past 2 years screams he's not ready for prime time. He treats his coach like an old mop to throw away before realizing he still needs to clean the floor. Been a Dolphin fan since 1966 and Ross will be the worst owner we ever had.

Manning is 10x better now than Flynn will ever be...

This Armando guy is an idiot... Actually all you dolphin fans are idiots if you dont think you should go after the best QB of all time . Manning will instentlly make the dolphins a super bowl contender . I have no clue how this idiot Armond got to publish this stupied story. Flynn throws 6 tds in one game so all a sudden hes a great qb hahhaha

Who are these IDIOTS arguing against Peyton?? One of the best of all-time. Imagine what Peyton would do with Marshall,Bess,Fasano, and Bush as his targets. We would rip the Patriots and Jets to pieces. Peyton would make those 4 players even better players. I am still in shock we actually even have a shot at Manning! As much as I can't stand our dumb owner, he is right in getting Peyton...and keep Moore as the backup.

Peyton is done, forget it. As of now witnesses say his arm is still only at 40% and nobody knows if or when it will improve, that won't cut it.

Armondo, I agree with you, but I also think the attraction to Manning is a ruse to bring Flynn's price & terms down. Ross could pay too much for Flynn if Flynn knows he is the only alternative in Miami's sights. Open competition is good when hiring someone.

we have a dingbat, billionaire owner and a wannabe GM who cant be trusted. mike nolan is widely respected and begged to be let out of his contract so he could escape from these idiots.

Josh you're a racist. How can you believe Peyton will produce like he has in the past when he can't feel his own arm! RG3 is far from a loser, and the fins will be wishing we drafted him for the next 10 years while we watch another decaying QB care take the dolphins and lead us to a first round playoff loss if that much.

greg they let nolan out of his contract because it was a foregone conclusion the new coach would hire his own staff. they always do. the only chance nolan and daboll had of staying was if they hired bowles as hc.

No Im not racist Im just speaking the truth.

HOw many black QB'S WON THE SUPEROWL 1!!!! RG111 is a bigger version of Pat White and not much bigger.

How is Vick "the man" at QB doing? Where he been.

Hey whatever Draft the kid let him play and fail like the rest then come back five years from now and make excuses like the rest.

Manning is smart. HE IS THE MAN. He isnt a liar he has PLENTY of money so he doesnt need to play he wants to BADLY.

Mark my words if we say no to him, and draft RG111 WELL. He isnt Cam Newton and once people get enough tape on Newton he wont be that special either.

Whatever hate if you want you do cause I'm right.

Having the balls to speak the truth makes me racist then so be it I speak it how I see it, you dont like it dont read it, either way I don't really care?

The only way I see the Manning deal making any sense is if there have been discussions between Philbin and Mike Sherman about A&M QB Ryan Tannehill and he is the target at QB in the draft where we would look for him in the 2nd round or possibly trade back into the bottom of the 1st round for him. We all talk about Philbin knowing Flynn, well our new OC knows Tannehill pretty well too. If Tannehill is the focus, then Manning may make sense as a stopover (and possible Super Bowl QB) for a few years while Tannehill is groomed. Much like how it all went down in...wait for it...Green Bay with Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

josh the flaw in your argument is that there have been so few black qb's to begin with and only in recent history has it become more common. you argument is no different that asking how many red haired qbs won the super bowl.

i could care less about the racial side of it, but you obviously have a frozen pea for a brain.

Andy, tell what he's done wrong aside from the Harbaugh fiasco. And had he gotten Harbaugh everyone would be ecstatic. he didn't hire Parcell, TS had to go, Fisher was going to St Louis because of his and his agent's association with the COO of the team, he doesn't pick personnel, he only assumed control of the team 9 of 2010.

the media molds your minds like silly putty. flynn is a 7th round nobody not worth a thought. how will he perform when the opposing defense has tape on him and prepares for him? like a 7th rounder.

1. Manning is one of the most cerebral QBs EVER .. I can't believe he would have that hard of a time adjusting to a different offense (assuming he's healthy - but if)

2. Only way to get RG3 is to trade too much to trade up .. I'd take Flynn and draft a QB lower (we could trade DOWN and get Tannehill AND a little more)

3. Armando may be a little negative, but he keeps us all updated on our favorite team .. things we wouldn't know if he didn't tell us here, so .. benefit of the doubt, folks.

4. Anybody ever hear of spell-check? Funny watching people misspell names that are spelled correctly higher up on this same page ; )

Emmit Ill agree on that.

I dont care about another mans skin color cant help how your born, but you can help how you act.

Were not drafting RG111 anyways so doesnt matter.
Manning is the topic at hand and to say no lets not take a chance because this douschbag Flynn is out there is stupid.

But he might blah blah blah....... He will kick ass wherever he ends up.

Then all the neysayers will be like why didnt we.

Shut up about it pick up manning sign to a 4 year deal let him retire in Miami.

Draft Barkeley next year if you want let him sit under MAnning for 3 years then continue dominating like a Boss.

Jesus its not a difficult decision here.

Seriously you treads need Jesus or somthing lol.

I mean Manning cant play OH NO!! IF HE BOMBS we get Moore playing which will allow us to recieve higher draft pick in comes Barkeley.

WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN either way you cut it.

The neysayers are just saying no to Manning because deep down they dont want to get there hopes up, and accept that we would be a SB continder.

They can't take that pressure and they wana stay in the dumps cause it's what there used too.

Just sayinn....

I can't believe people are still drinking the Flynn Kool-Aid. It was only one game! He is not the savior! And every time I hear "trade to down to get this QB" I want to puke. It's that same defeatist attitude that has kept us in this black hole of mediocrity for this last decade. We beed to trade up, not down. Time for a bold move. If it's Manning, at least it'll break up the mediocrity for a couple of seasons. I'm all in on RG3, however. Let's go!

All I know is the this. The Manning health situation will be open far past the draft and free agency!!

Any team with half a brain has to make decisions with Manning as a possibility, not a definite.

I would seriously rather have Moore and Flynn with Blackmon anyway.

Mando, all this article is doing is quoting the forum of quarterbacks on espn yesterday... what do you do... watch tv and transcribe that here

why do people say they would rather have flynn when they have no idea what philbin thinks of him. maybe philbin likes moore better than flynn? who can say. i can understand somebody wanting a particular qb that has a history of good play, can't understand this fanfare for a guy based on one game against a d that had no tape on him.

Lol ohhhh RG111 Russell all over again. Dudes what 210 soaking wet? I remember Pat WHites last play. Yeah it ended his career. Vick is slightly bigger and he gets hurt every damn game.

Yeah lets Pick up RG111 so we can suck the big one for the next decade.

Talk about drinking the kool-aid.

people are voting on flynn based on what exactly. flynn is the new buzz word qb, like kolb was. heck these fans all of a sudden last year catapulted kyle orton to new heights. silly putty minds. the power of media, people can't think for themselves any more.

I dont want to sign Manning, but not for this reason. Manning is known worker and student of the game, he could pick up any offense quick.

He is old and injured. His own team that he has won hundreds of games for does not want him. That should speak volumes

I think for myself and get called pea-brained and racist!!! wow!!! Maybe people should continue to drink Media Kool-Aid!!?????

Jeff only because they can draft Luck. Your stupid Jeff seriously how much thought did you put into that equation?

Brees wasn't damn near 40yrs old either. Say no to Manning. Flynn also has plenty of question marks. Does any one remember him at LSU??? Kid is short...has barely enough arm to throw the ball 30 yds and isn't very moblile. Don't suddenly compare Flynn with Dree Brees after his 2 game flash in the pan success as an NFL starter.

One more thing...why all the love to Tannehill??? Dude sucked his 1st yr starting and really has only had 1 good yr at A&M. Suddenly posters are labeling him a top tier qb. I would hold out another year an draft Tyler Wilson before wasting a pick on this kid....depending on where we are slotted next yr.(Barkley)

Manning> RGIII> Tannehill> Moore-> Henne > Flynn

I have to agree Str8balla. I do not understand the infatuation with Tannehill. Personally, I don't want a project at QB. Flynn has an average deep ball and reminds me of Jay Fieldler. The only hope the Fins have of the correct move there is the day to day time Philbin spent with him in Green Bay. Personally I would like to see the best tackle acquired in the first and outside of taking Manning, possibly take Wheeden form Oklahoma State and let Moore start the year from game one.

You are underestimating Manning. He has the smarts to learning a new system. And quickly.

I think too much is being made about Ross's comment. Yeah anyone would love to have the idea of Peyton on thier team but what no one is reporting is the same issue Irsay in Indianapolis said Peyton hasn't been cleared by team doctors "NFL" to play yet. Having a successful surgery and being cleared to play by NFL is entirely 2 different issues.

You media people amaze me!! One article you praise the genius of Belichick and how he and his staff adapts to the players strengths and roster!!! You praised and supported the hiring of Denvers OC Mike Mccoy for how he totally threw out his play book and went with what Tebow could do RUN??? I love your hypocrisy..... Amando down deep you really want a winner ? because you won't have as much to complain about. I will say this your an expert at finding fault in everything..... God I ask you humbly to please create some real sports writers with facts, real breaking news and not just opinions that are meant to create dissension and discourse in an organization for personal reasons and if you could also get Amando a job in another city where his favorite sports team plays I would be thankful, AMEN

What is all this Barkley talk? Name 1 USC qb to start and win the super bowl. NONE! Does noodle arm alarm anyone? Does Manning is not throwing like an NFL qb let alone a college qb alarm anyone? Let Flynn compete with Moore and draft a RT in the 1st. Its not sexy but its the smartest way to go thats not going to kill this team for the 5 years.

All this Franchise need is another Jerry Jones

Manning has zero upside. He's old and his arm is gone. If Philbin makes a big push Flynn you know the guy can play because Philbin would be stacking his reputation on it! Draft a pass rusher in the first round and a right tackle later. What would you do if Trent Richardson fell to the Dolphins in the first round? Know doubt he would be the best player available at that pick.

I have nit seen anywhere that Ross wants an unhealthy Manning! Armando is just guessing and weaving a whole scenario based off it , and you all overreact as usual. SMH

Mando, aren't these questions better answered by the FO (than us)? Are you (or the Herald beat writers) not privy to conversations with the new HC (I won't ask about Ireland, I know he rarely speaks)? Maybe it's time to do some investigative journalism and get to the bottom of this matter, no?

You bring up very interesting questions is all, that I think we'd all like "official" answers to.
