... And another thing that makes Manning wrong choice

A couple of days ago I made the case why I'm not too fond of the idea of the Dolphins signing Peyton Manning to be their starting quarterback in 2012.

I'm not done.

Moving on from Manning's health questions, his age question, his eventual decline, his being a short-term fix at best when the quarterback problem requires a long-term solution, I've come up with annother issue to ponder as I continue to swim upstream on an idea the Dolphins apparently are intent on developing.

I was reminded by a former coach yesterday that adding Peyton Manning to your team can become a royal pain in the posterior.

The point was made to me that whatever team Manning joins will have to make concessions for him. The team will have to run an offense he's familiar with to maximize his talent immediately because, after all, he's going to be 36 years old and time is short. No time for him to learn a new system and get comfy in the system and start to produce maybe late in the year and maybe next year.

In the Dolphins case, that would likely mean new coach Joe Philbin and offfensive coordinator Mike Sherman learning a system Manning is comfortable with rather than the other way around.

So let me get this straight: The Dolphins hire Philbin because they admire his work in Green Bay. They like the Green Bay model. They like the Green Bay system. And he hires buddy Mike Sherman, who was at Green Bay and feels a kinship with Philbin and the system he wants to run.

And having all that familiarity available to them, the Dolphins would scrap it all to make Manning comfortable with a system similar to the one he's run the past 14 years? They would make Manning the de-facto offensive coordinator?

One of the advantages everyone assumed the Dolphins would enjoy by hiring Philbin was expertise on soon-to-be free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, who played under Philbin in Green Bay and is obviously familiar with that system. Assuming Philbin wanted to make some tweaks to the system, the foundation was still going to remain and Flynn was going to enjoy a head start if he joined the Dolphins because he is very familiar with that foundation.

And the Dolphins are simply going to turn their back on that?

That would be better?

I have to say this: The reason everyone knows the Dolphins are enamored with the idea of signing Peyton Manning if he becomes available is because owner Stephen Ross loves the idea. And he's the boss. He is apparently going to make this call come heck or high water.

Everyone knows this as fact because Ross has let his feelings be known on the subject.

But no one knows how Philbin feels about it. Nobody knows general manager Jeff Ireland's opinion on the subject. Don't they get a vote?

Do Miami's football men have the ability to say 'No' to the owner if all their football wisdom tells them to go in a different direction away from Manning?

Now, I suppose it is possible Ross spouted his opinion on chasing Manning after careful consideration and conversation with both Ireland and Philbin. (For Miami's sake, I hope that's the case.) But knowing the Dolphins as I do, my guess is no such conversation took place before Ross indirectly made his desires known.

Despite my worst fear, perhaps such a conversation eventually takes place and Philbin and Ireland are all in on Manning. (Something that will cause me to wonder about both men, but that's another story). At that point it won't be an issue that Philbin might have to subjugate his system for one that fits Manning. At that point it won't be an issue that ownership is dictating which quarterback the team must chase first before checking with, you know, the football experts. Those points would be moot.

But it still raises the question: Why have such a logical connection to a young quarterback after hiring his coach and then going in a totally different direction with an old quarterback? Is that fair to Philbin?

And will it work?

As at that time we couldn't travel, back in the 70's we would pick up all these South American girls at the Surfcomber in MB. Great classy Ladies, lots of Fun.

Why would you marry a cheap hooker?

Coalition To Ban Irisland | February 10, 2012 at 08:59 PM

kizo | February 10, 2012 at 09:09 PM

I've been there a bunch and partied my keester off there!

The qualifications of this coaching staff anyone?
Philbin has 21 coaches so the staff is 22.
The OC got more experienced.
The other 21 got less or stayed the same.

Our coaches that left however went to:
Soprano/Jets
Bowles/Eagles
Nolan/Falcons
Daboll/Chiefs

Does anyone other than me feel like we're worse off and the guys that left are better off?

21 COACHES AND ONLY 45 PLAYERS ON TEAM?, WHY DONT THEY MAKE SUPR BOWL, THATS 2 PLAYERS FOR EVERY COACH. SMF, IS THIS THE SAME FOR EVERY TEAM?

unless you found your bride in a brothel?

Coalition To Ban Ireland | February 10, 2012 at 09:08 PM

NO of course not but since I am the only one who mentioned being married I thought you were taking a swipe at me, I apologize to you then!

80 keys on keyboard.

1 caps lock key

USE IT

I don't know.
But our new WR coach has no NFL experience.
And our new ass't WR coach has no NFL experience.
So I'm trying to picture the WR practice where Brandon's not really focused because he can't stop talking about the pro bowl and what is the WR coach from Dartmouth going to do? Make him run laps?
Threaten to bench him?

21 COACHES AND ONLY 45 PLAYERS ON TEAM?, WHY DONT THEY MAKE SUPR BOWL, THATS 2 PLAYERS FOR EVERY COACH. SMF, IS THIS THE SAME FOR EVERY TEAM?

ALoco | February 10, 2012 at 09:16 PM

Forget the S.B. with that kind of Coaching and teaching why aren't they at NASA building Rockets to the Moon?? Mr. Ross's money is being stolen!! What do you think ALoco??

If it's Philbin's job to coach up all of the coaches with no NFL experience then who's job is it to coach up Philbin who has no HC experience?
Ireland?
Ross?
Sherman?

Just so we are clear none of these college coaches are from a top 20 DivI school.
These are not BCS Bowl coaches.
Neither LSU nor Alabama nor Mich nor Oklahoma etc.
These guys are from Temple, Duquesne & St Albans where ever the f uck that is.

We have Arena league coaches. If we werent getting Fisher we should've kept Sparano.

FIN,MR.ROSS ALWAYS THROW AWAY HIS MONEY.
MASRSHALL....40 MILION
PIZZA MAKER SPORONO... 2 MILION
DANBY.... 32 MILION
IRELAND... UNKNOW
HE SPEND MORE MONEY THEN ODEN ON A BENDER.
(BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE)

Apparently, that's the way Ross/Ireland want it, one Coach for every 2 Players. I don't know. It's their $ and their Gamble.

If it's Philbin's job to coach up all of the coaches with no NFL experience then who's job is it to coach up Philbin who has no HC experience?
Ireland?
Ross?
Sherman?

TheSMF | February 10, 2012 at 09:24 PM

The Sherman hire reeked of what your saying, no?

Ross will be buying a lot of his own tickets....AGAIN!

These guys are from Temple, Duquesne & St Albans where ever the f uck that is.

TheSMF | February 10, 2012 at 09:26 PM

My thoughts upon hearing of the hires as well!

I meant to say Wild Sheen movie!

New Blog!

RoboHenne will wind up on someones practice squad.

MJ | February 10, 2012 at 09:41 PM

Robo got hurt running with the ball and was always trying to tackle on T.O.'s not girly like the puke Marino.

I'm sure Ross is great at real estate but he's the WORST sports owner. The day Ross sells the team Finfans can rejoice.

If manning Is healthy you sign him. Manning is not dante culpepper, he's not chad pennington How many superbowls had those guys won? How many MVPs?. Brett favre had one of his best seasons at age 39, and peyton is better than favre has ever been. Manning made the colts look like stars. He's a smart guy and a natural player... if you think he doesn't have the brains to learn an offense then you are an idiot.

More nonsense from Salguero... This from the guy that on the eve of free agency a couple of years ago broke the big news of "Joe Berger" to the Dolphins..lol Simply put Peyton Manning would be the best thing to happen to this snake bitten team since Dan Marino was drafted by the Dolphins.. The guy is a Hall of Famer.. He is working his ass off to prove people wrong. He would make the Dolphins instantly relevant.. While I like Flynn the guy just does not have enough body of work to pin your future on.. Flynn=Matt Moore=Chad Henne=John Beck=AJ Feely=Gus Ferotte=Sage Rosenfels.. Manning=credibility..

I think we need more than one QB. If we can get manning relatively cheap by loading his contract with incentives, then get him AND RG3, or Flynn. That answers the QB play now and into the future. Not sure if everyone buys into that or if it's even feasible, but that's what I'd have my personnel people working on.

look r you really telling people that mr manning cant learn a new offence please ive never been a fan of his personally but he is still one of the smartest qbs of all time so again your point makes sense the only thing that matters is when and/or will he be healthy enough 2 play period

Armando, When Stephen Ross makes statements that he is interested in signing Manning, he is using the media because the Dolphins are going to get Flynn and that is not a possibility it's going to happen because it makes football sence. Use the 1st round pick to get a pass rusher and then go RT. The Dolphins will have to give up to many draft picks to get a Luck or Griffin. Comments by Ross on Manning have to be for misleading other teams before the draft. Owners, GM's, players, agents, everyone does not tell the truth before the draft.

Honestly....I don't think this will be an issue folks. Manning is reportedly still not able to throw the way he used to. . . with the neck and nerve damage....I highly suspect he will never get back to his former self. I really think our options for Fins QB will be Flynn and a lower round draft pick to bring up in time behind him....or the draft in a daring and expensive trade up for RG3 (my preference because of the WOW factor with RG3) or stay put and draft Tannehill....I think he would be worth it....or may be try to trade down a few spots (daring anyone not to pick Tannehill ahead of us, like what happened when we were set to draft the QB from Arkansas last year and the Patriots stepped up and got him b4 us in the 3rd round - Bellichek thought he was good), picking up a draft pick, and still getting Tannehill (him over Weedon....Tannehill is good at WR and QB and Weedon, not right for Fins)...If Tannehill, keep Moore as the starter and start Tannehill next year....good transition.

josh,

That was one stupid comment man. Doug Williams was the 1st black QB to win a Super Bowl. I feel the problem a long time ago was that many teams (the ownwers specifically) didn't "trust" their team to a black QB because of racism. That is not the case anymore. I think racism at the most important position on the team is going away for the most part, as it should have never been a consideration to start with. When I say "for the most part", I mean except for ignorant individuals like yourself. Racism in the NFL still exists for some odd reason when it comes to the QB position. It almost entirely comes from "fans", which, by the way, is short for the word "fanatic". So do us and yourself a favor Josh, leave color out of your judgement process on other human beings and when you get old, you will be loved and respected by your kids and all of the younger people you know.

Mando I agree with DC Dolfan, it seems that we have heard the opinion of just about every fan and pundit that has an interest on the success or failure of the Dolphin franchise; Even Ross has opined through the media(?!?) that he is leaning towards Manning, but no one has heard and Philbin has not talked about the QB preference. When will you be able to question him with reference to that point? We loyal fans of the Dolphins and YOUR reporting await with bated breath...

No offense, but for as long as I've been a fan, I want ONE super bowl title...No matter who get, or however we rebuild, it NEVER works...He's a MANNING...GET HIM!!!! Do we also forget that Sherman and philbin worked with the biggest egomaniac ever in Brett Favre??? Peyton Manning is one of the best ever..Nobody wanted Marino kicked out of town in 2000, now people are doubting bringing in the same type of QB 12 years later??? I don't care if he's healthy for a year or two, because those 2 years are as close as we'll ever get to the trophy, period....

Are u really a Miami native? All i see is fairy tales in your column. Brother understand this we dont need Kevin Kolb(Matt Flynn) on our our team with one 400 plus yard game. if that's the case Matt Moore should be insulted with your blasphemy. Here's a question for you When has Miami ever had an opportunity since Drew Brees too bring a winner to Miami. We saw Jay Fiedler great game and we brought him down and look where we are today im glad we finally have an owner that is willing for his team to win, because if u were the owner lets just say we are doomed too mediocrity if we placing bets on Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn spare me..

Armando, keep piling up NEGATIVE stuff, thats all YOU SO CALLED WRITERS AT THE MIAMI HERALD KNOW HOW TO DO, CAUSE REPORTING NEWS IS DEFINITELY NOT IN YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION!!!......
who cares about your opinion, honestly!!!! give us FACTS!!! NOT YOUR OPINION!!...

Jay Schroeder suffered a shoulder injury on the very first game of that 1987-88 season. He made it back somehow not 100% and if my memory serves me well, I think seeing him taking a couple of snaps in that SB 22. Doug Williams may have won the game, but remember Coach Gibbs rescued him after the USFL was gone and brought him to Wash as back up to Jay. Skin colors aside, I don't want Manning and certainly don't want no Flynn either.

Onnnnnnnnce again, I get a laugh out of this IDIOT and the empty void he passes off as football knowledge. Tell me something (Powers that be at the Herald): Do you really pay this moron? Dam Marino said it all when he said "Some guys are, you know...just made to be backups!" That statement ends any talk of Flynn. But, NNNNNooooooo, amronte salgueero knows better than does Danny! Friggin joke....
