The Dolphins offseason plan? Possible version here

Jeff Ireland has "a plan" for the offseason. He isn't giving details of what that plan is. He has no intention of unveiling it for public scrutiny to the point where he told Dolphins coaches not to even talk about quarterbacks or needs or free agency during their recent media availability.

Makes sense.

But, let's face it, this isn't rocket science.

Miami's needs are easy to understand if you watched the team the last couple of years. The players that are or will likely become available are also public knowledge. And we know there is a finite amount of ways the Dolphins can actually add players -- through free agency first, the draft and, of course, trades.

So what does Ireland's plan likely look like?

Let's begin with the problems the plan must address:

The Dolphins need a starting QB first and foremost. They would love a franchise quarterback, of course, and that's the first order of business. But at the minimum they need a quarterback who will compete with Matt Moore for the starting job in training camp. That is known to everyone.

So how to address the QB question?

Peyton Manning, if relatively healthy, will be the team's top target if he's available. Simple. Ownership has sent this commandment down from the Dolphins version of Mount Sinai. I've written Manning is the QB priority if he's healthy and until Manning either stays in Indianapolis, or retires, or shows he is incapable of throwing the football (the latter of which will not happen), he will be the thing for Miami.

If Manning is out of the picture, I think the Dolphins go with Matt Flynn. The fact is Flynn will come with a starter's price tag and not a lot of certainty. But he comes with more certainty than any possible draft pick not named Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III. Flynn in free agency seems to be more logical, given his history and connection to Joe Philbin, than say, using a first-round pick on Ryan Tannehill. Flynn is young and more experienced and probably more NFL starter ready than Tannehill. And if you pick up Flynn, you can free up use of the first-round pick for another major need while still having the option of drafting another QB -- perhaps Brandon Weeden -- later in the draft.

If the Dolphins cannot add either Flynn (who will have other options) or Manning (who is a huge wild card) in free agency, you can pretty much put the first-round card in right now for a QB.

Does that mean Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are out of the question? Nothing is out of the question, I suppose. But I don't see the Dolphins paying two first-round picks, plus more resources, such as a second and perhaps a third round pick, or perhaps even three first-round picks to go to the No. 2 overall spot where getting Luck or Griffin will be possible.

Using that many chips to go high enough for the two QBs could cripple the franchise for years if the QB it brings in return is not a franchise player. And as Bill Parcells said, they don't sell insurance for this stuff.

Moving on.

The club needs a right side to the offensive line -- with both right guard and right tackle a question mark. Marc Colombo is done. If he finds himself in a Dolphins uniform again in training camp, something went horribly wrong because he is simply not a starting-caliber NFL tackle any more. Assuming the club intends to fill one of the right side needs, either at guard or tackle, with an "on campus" solution -- such as John Jerry or Nate Garner or Lydon Murtha -- that still means the club needs to solve the other right-side problem by adding a body.

There are great free agency options such as Carl Nicks at guard. I love the prospect of Jared Gaither at tackle in free agency. But both will be very, very, very expensive. Nicks today said he's looking for a deal above $56.7 million that averages more than $8.1 million per season -- the deal signed by teammate Jahri Evans. No way the Dolphins pay that!

Despite their history for spending extravagantly on the offensive line in free agency, I think the Dolphins aren't going down that road. I think they'll try to solve their offensive line issue in the second wave of free agency or in the draft -- not the first round.

The club also needs a pass-rusher. The truth is I believe this is the top need and the only one that rivals quarterback. Simply, the Dolphins need to pressure the quarterback better, need to find a pass-rusher so good as to make Cameron Wake the complementary pass-rusher, and need to make sure this player is also a viable run-stopper on the edge. I know that Mario Williams will be available in free agency. Cliff Avril will also be on the free agent market.

But again, I don't see the Dolphins spending their money here. I see them spending draft picks here and an early pick at that -- probably their first pick assuming the quarterback issue is resolved in free agency.

There's a need at free safety. There's a need at tight end. There's probably a need at wide receiver because a high-priced or high draft pick QB needs as much help on the other end of his passes as possible.

These are all issues tackled in the second-wave of free agency or on the draft's second or third days. I assume the Dolphins still have very high hopes for Charles Clay as a hybrid tight end so they're not going to invest a high pick or a great deal of money there. They obviously didn't last year.

My big concern is that Miami will continue to be lulled into a sense of false security at WR. Davone Bess did not show well last year -- certainly not as well as he did the previous years. And while Brian Hartline had solid moments, he still hasn't proven he's a good No. 2 starting WR despite owning the job two seasons.

Me? I'd get the QB more help. I'd get Brandon Marshall some help. I'd get solid WR wherever I could find him. By the way, did I hear Green Bay may be parting ways with Donald Driver? I scoop him up. He'll be familiar with the system, he's an awesome locker room presence, he knows how to win, and he would make Flynn a nice security blanket.

Yes, he's 37 years old. I get that. But he was also Green Bay's best WR in the playoffs. I hope the Dolphins get that.

Most have suspiciously looked like they suicided themselves.

This blog has turned to $-hit

Ireland is incapable of finding a franchise QB.

Blasted chemtrails!!!

Not every single draft pick pans out, but statistically the further you are from the top the more likelihood that pick will not become a great player, are there gems out there? Of course but I just do not see what is all the fuss about giving up two 1st round picks (a 8/9th and a even later one in 2013) and a 2nd, along with a WR like Hartline to get RG3.

His salary BTW will be pennies compared to what we would have to pay a 7th rounder like Flynn, that is preposterous IMO. We already have two decent QBs in Moore and Devlin so why not roll the dice sort of speak and go after RG3. Of course the Phins must do their homework and analyze to the t about him but from pretty much all experts this guy has it all: strong arm, faster, strongerand taller than Vick, disciplined, leader, smart, great work ethic.

Since his salary will be very manageable the team then can use resources to bring FA talent that can help the team in specific needs:

-WR (deep threat, WCO): DeSean Jackson. This is another plus of having a strong arm QB in RG3, Flynn although accurate has a noodle arm (see Chad P).
-DE: Mario Williams
-CB: C. Finnegan
-FS: M. Griffin
-TE: Greg Olsen or J. Shockey

Of course we can not sign them all but two of them will be excellent additions which leads me to this whole thing about giving up the future thing non-sense: it is simple not truth. Even the Saints who did give up the farm and then some to get a RUNNING BACK did not end crippled for years, heck they are in better shape today than we are, there is free agency to help soften the blow if RG3 does not pan out. Besides everyone knows the guy is not a lazy bum like J. Russell so he would have value anyway if needed to be traded, the Saints did after all got value for Ricky...from US!!!

Grow a pair, go after RG3, in a WCO this guy is going to be Michael Vick times ten, smarter, no off the field issues. With RG3 this team will have unmatched athleticism, imagine RG3, Bush, Marshall, Long, Pouncey, Clay, I mean throw DeSean Jackson in there and that is a Pro-Bowl offense.

Luckily this draft is littered with OL and we can use our remainder picks to get one that falls through the cracks, someone like Mike Adams or Kelechi Osemele if we do keep our 2nd this year or go for someone like TE Dwayne Allen. We are not tha far from being competitive but with no balls we will never be ELIte. The Giants took a similar leap of faith in their QB, I think the results speak for themselves.

I'M WONDERING WHAT HAS FLYNN DONE TO GET ALL THIS LOVE?

I'M GOING TO YOU TUBE FLYNN.

BE RIGHT BACK WITH MY THOUGHTS.

Justin, thats if you even find anything.

I wonder how many on here have even see RG3 play.....
How many nationally televised games did Baylor play...
I saw one game....the Championship game for whatever conference Baylor plays for (what conference is that again).....in that game he played neck and neck with the opposing teams QB.....neither was very impressive.....one could argue the other QB out played RG3.....
I'm not saying RG3 is less than advertised...he may be the real deal......but my question is.......
Who among you on this blog has seen it and can attest to it....and who is just parroting what ESPN wants you to believe.....
ESPN would have us believe that Tim Tebow is the Messiah in a football uniform...and GOD cares wether or not the broncos win.....
ESPN would now have you believe that Jermely Lin is the basketball version of Tim Tebow....
and ESPN wants us to believe that RG3 is something he may very well not be....
All I am saying is......before you buy into the hype.....take a look to see if you have seen any evidence of this....or if you are just repeating what you have been told since NOV of last year.....

I have! They don't have to be nationally televised games. There's plenty of regional action on Saturdays as well. Being that Baylor is in Texas, we get plenty of this regional action....not to mention, we see a lot of WAC, MWC, and Big 12 games out here.

Ireland cant get us a franchise QB but he can squander 3 picks on a backup RB.

Wolfman....Thanks for the response....

so in your opinion....is he worth it...

Dolphins fans so stupid. Dope reporter write same story over and over. Sound like written by child. One plan is to get peyton other plan is get Flynn. Written like they equal plans but they not equal they opposite. If true that mean there is no plan.

PhucYu = PriceMaster

PhucYu = PriceMaster's boyfriend Chad Henne is headed to the New York Jerks.

Kris @ 11:34 - I really like RG3 and would love to see him in a Dolphin uniform. Where I disagree with many is in RE to betting the farm on this guy. By betting the farm I'm talking about many peoples opinion that there should be no limit to the Phins offer to trade up. I would not be opposed to a reasonable trade offer...obviously a swap of 1st rnd picks this year...the 2nd....and next years 1st and maybe a later round pick. But that's about as far as I would go.

I think giving away the entire draft and next years as many are advocating is complete lunacy. He does project well IMO and has a ton of potential, but he's not a sure fire bet either. He's nowhere close to Luck in that regard...just my opinion.

I'll break down the good, bad, and ugly that I've seen from him in my next post.

Kris, good choice. And I never disagree with a poster saying I'm right!

Free agents Marcus Colston, and Mike Wallace either one would look good in a Dolfins uniform. Address pass rusher in draft.

FLYNN?

HE PLAYED AGINST THE PATS AND LIONS. HE ALSO WAS IN THE VIKINGS GAME IN GARBAGE TIME.

WHAT I NOTICED WAS A SCREEN THROW TO GRANT THAT WENT ABOUT 85 YARDS.

A 3 YARD PASS TO GRANT THAT WENT ABOUT 60 YARDS.

A LONG PASS TO NELSON THAT WAS A BETTER CATCH THAN THROW.

A 5 YARD PASS TO FINLEY WHO TURNED IT INTO A 30 RAC.

A 8 YARD PASS TO NELSON WHO TOOK IT ABOUT 30 YARDS.

HE IS NOT AS ACCURATE AS YOU MAY THINK. THE WIDEOUTS WERE REALLY OPENED

THE PACKS RUN ALOT OF 4-5 MAN SETS.

FLYNN MADE A GREAT PASS TO JONES IN THE PATS GAME. THREW A PRETTY PASS THAT JONES CAUGHT IN STRIDE.

ONE GREAT PASS IN THE LIONS GAME.

NOTHING REALLT SPECIAL IN THE VIKES GAME.

HE GETS REAL NERVOUS IN THE POCKET. CALL HIM HAPPY FEET.

AGINST THE PATS HE THREW FOR 250 SOMETHING YARDS.

HENNE THREW FOR OVER 400 YARDS AGINST THE SAME D.

TO ALL THE FLYNN LOVERS JUST STOP.

LOOKING AT STATS MEANS NOTHING.

AGAIN FLYNN HAD OVER 300 YADS AND THREW THE BALL 3 TIMES FOR LESS THAN 20 YARDS.

WHICH PROVES MY POINT THAT WE NEED MORE PLAY MAKERS.

NOT A NEW QB.

YOU TUBE HIM FOR YOUR SELF.

DC....when I look @ the numbers...there is no doubt his production is down....

The question then becomes.... why are they down....

and I have to believe that whatever excuses I may want to make....in the end...it will ALL tie back in to his age....

KRIS TAUGHT ME TO DO INTERNET HOMEWORK.

I'M NOT SAYING HE's A BUM BUT I JUST DON't SEE ANYTHING GREAT ABOUT HIM.

HE's NOT IN NO WAY BETTER THAN HENNE OR MOORE.

WHY SPEND ALL THAT MONEY.

Curious, great question earlier. I appreciate you giving me the chance to lay my views on the matter out there. I don't think I've given enough analysis of this question, and I know the blog yearns for it. So great job by you, seriously.

My thought is, after much thoughtful reflection, and building consensus, that we are in need of a franchise QB. There are many ways to go about finding one, but my suggestion is to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks (I call it the INFANT STRATEGY).

My choice would be to get our guy through the Draft, but at the very least we should attempt every year to upgrade the position until there's a long-term solution.

HOWEVER (and this is important), once a long-term solution is found, we're not done. We need an adequate backup and/or developmental player (so we don't run into this problem again of having no one to take over as QB after our franchise QB retires/gets injured/etc.).

I've got to get my thoughts together for part 2 of this post, so let me do that and I'll get back to you with much, much more (which I know you're waiting with baited breath to read).

Wolfman...

I look forward to readding the break down...

Bess is a beast and will be a best in this offense, he cannot be covered.

RG3 - The good, bad, & the ugly (from someone who has actually watched a few Baylor games...and who also happens to be a big RG3 fan, even before it was cool. Mind you, I'm not a professional evaluator by any means...just some amateur observations:

The Good:

Legit NFL arm. He can spin it and make all the throws. Throws the ball on a rope with just enough arc to drop the ball in on deeper throws. Great velocity but also has great touch on short and intermediate throws. Very accurate both in the pocket and on the run.

Despite many preconceptions, he's a throw first guy. He will stand in the pocket and look down the barrel to make the play. Can and will extend the play with his feet. Fantastic passer on the run. If all else fails, he will try to make the play with his feet.

He's one of those guys that's just a playmaker and has that IT factor. He doesn't give up on anything or anyone. In his mind, there's always a positive play to be made.

Exceedingly smart, completing his bachelors degree in 3 years with a 4.0 GPA and will have his masters by the time training camps start in the summer.

To be continued....Will post the bad & ugly in another post.

BESS CAN't RUN AFTER THE CATCH

Ross should hire Mayock or Kiper to do the draft for us. We’d be a lot better off.

Justin Credible....

After reading your post...I was gonna say that I was impressed with the breakdown of Flynn....

Its hard to argue against the way you laid that out...I kinda felt like I was watching it...while I was reading it....

I'm on the fence with Flynn as option #1....but as plan B...i'm more inclined to get behind him...

Like you said...we just haven't seen enough...

Kris, you don't have to guess, watch a game. The guy can't get open, has become the like 4th, 5th option on that team, and has had a couple injury issues last few years.

Don't get me wrong, if this was 4-5 years ago, I'd say this guy still has some life. But he's gotten into Randy Moss/Terrell Owens territory. He's just not as potent as he once was.

On this one (for this year, since we have a bunch of other holes to fill which to me are more important) I wouldn't be mad at seeing them give Marlon Moore a chance to shine. He's shown some ability, let's put him out there and test it.

That way we can concentrate on OLB, TE, S, etc. and then worry about WR next year (if necessary). My feeling is the right QB makes every WR instantly better (so get the right QB and finding the right WR becomes less of a priority).

YOU TAUGHT ME WELL MASTER.

Wolfman...

can you address how many games he has started...and if he was an instant STAR...or if he seemed to GET IT over time....and if you remember when (in your opinion) what game(s) it all seemed to click for him....

OOH YEAH I FORGOT.

I'M GOING TO MIAMI THIS WEEKEND.

CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHERE THE HOT SPOTS ARE.

--------------------------------------------------

DC....I agree with ALL of that....

Thanks Justin,
I saw the same thing when watching Flynn, those stats are incredibly deceiving, no way we should pay top $$$ for such unproven dude who let's no forget was a 7th rd pick. His WRs -and opponents- made him look good. People forget the Lions game was totally meaningless and that on the same field the opposing QB, Stafford, threw for over 500 yds.

Against the Pats he threw for less yds than Henne, again numbers do not tell the whole story sometimes.

If we let Cleveland or Washington take Flynn the price tag for RG3 will be slightly less, our 1st rounder this year (an 8 or 9th pick), next year's (outside top 10), a 2nd rounder, and a WR like Hartline to WR-needy Rams can do the trick and I think we can live with that.

With RG3 in a WCO we would have the most athletic offense ever put together, just imagine: RG3, Bush, Marshall, Long, Pouncey, Clay, throw in there DeSean Jackson via FA (since we will have more $$$ for not signing Flynn to a stupid contract). That would be a formidable offense in 2012 but wait until they gel completely in 2013, we would be set for years to come.

Please think big, when are you fans going to ever get tired of mediocrity and picking other teams' seconds. Grow a pair and draft RG3.

DC DOLPHIN:

THE SAME CAN BE SAID ABOUT THE RIGHT WIDEOUT.

THE JETS GIANTS GAME.

ELI THREW THE BALL 2 YARDS.

VICTOR CRUZ TURNS IT INTO A 99 YARD PLAY.

WHO DO YOU GIVE THE CREDIT TOELI OR CRUZ?

Kris,
I had seen RGIII play several times this year but I also saw him play twice in 2010 when there was little hype about him. Baylor had a good run blocking offensive line but their pass blocking left a lot to be desired. RGIII carried the team in some of the games Baylor played in 2011.
He is extremely accurate with ball placement, especially on long passes. He's not all bubble screens and short passes.
I saw the game against Iowa State where he came in on defense and stripped the ball and caused a fumble and Baylor recovered. Iowa State was driving and in the redzone at the time and they inserted RGIII into the defense so he could try and create something and he did it. He has the legs to get himself out of trouble but he is an extremely talented passer.
If Miami were to somehow land him they would be set at quarterback for awhile. I could see him leading them to a possible Super Bowl berth in 2 years. He is that talented.

petri dish.
lol

Wolfman...

The reason I ask thse questions is because....It seemed that Henne "GOT IT" this season....

He was throwing and running all over the place...he was decisive with his decisions....and putting up good number in each game....

I think the light came on for him this past season...its to bad it took so long....and its even worse that he got injured....now we will never know if that was a 3 game fluke....or if the game was starting to slow down for him....

I guess another team will find out for us...

I AGREE WITH YOU TO TIGER WE DON'T NEED FLYNN.

I RATHER KEEP HENNE AND MOORE THAN GET THEIR GARBAGE.

Proffesor Lou....

Thanks for the insight...thats very encouraging...or depressing....

Depending on wether we land him or not...

I predict the Dullfins stink again in 2012.

It is, therefore, obvious what we must do.

I have never considered Dusty a Troll....
