Mike Sherman has a Super Bowl ring from his time with the 1997 Green Bay Packers when he was the team's tight ends and assistant offensive line coach. He wants another ring.
And he thinks the Dolphins are close enough to help him get that ... No, seriously, Sherman sees the Dolphins that went 6-10 last year as being a few tweaks away.
"I've watched the tape, I don't think we're that far away," Sherman said today during a 30-minute meeting in which Dolphins coaches met with the media. "We're missing a couple of pieces here and there and we have a chance to build upon what Jeff Ireland has put together here. After watching the tape, I feel like we get a couple of pieces here and there and we'll be close."
Cool.
Sherman is clearly excited about Miami's personnel.
"We'll have some very explosive potential with the talent we have on offense," he said. "We have to fill some holes but overall we have some explosive players and that's exciting. If you have explosive players, you should have explosive plays."
When Sherman interviewed with the Dolphins he talked to coach Joe Philbin about what the ownership philosophy is in Miami. And Philbin convinced Sherman that Steve Ross is committed to winning a Super Bowl.
"I looked at tape when I was here and talked to Joe and wanted to know what the ownership philosophy was regarding the franchise and in the conversation with coach Philbin he was adamant about the fact that Mr. Ross wants to bring a Super Bowl, bring a Lombari Trophy to Miami. He's very passionate about that.
"So with that said, it was certainly a very telling statement, a convincing statement that led me to feel we have a chance to do that here with the current level we're able to add to this as well, and hopefully with our coaching we're able to do exactly what Mr. Ross wants to get done."
So I asked Sherman if he's thinking that in terms of years down the road or sooner than that.
"I never think much more than this year so next year or the following year, we're going to be as good as we can be this year," he said. "We'll see what happens and see how it goes. I don't think anyone would have picked the Giants necessarily to win the Super Bowl this year."
Short answer, Sherman doesn't see the Dolphins as a hopeless situation.
"No not at all," he said. "Not in the least."

Your Lord and Savior,,, I mean My Lord and Savior,,,I'm not at work,,I'm home. Got to step up your game big guy! Sheesh, you would think God would know all but here we are! He doesn't know jack squat! :)

No but you're right LOL. The Jets are vastly superior to the Dolphins and there is no way in hell the lowly Dolphins could ever dream of doing something they just did 3 seasons ago. All hail the mighty Jets, the only team LOL likes to root for and the only team that can retool and come close to a super bowl in one offseason.
I wonder what the 49ers record was in 2011, they must have been great.
Posted by: Phins78 | February 16, 2012 at 04:34 PM
oscar, exactly. Miami used both, Pats, pretty much every team does. When people say whether a team is 4-3 or 3-4 nowadays, they just mean their "base" defense.
I really don't think it matters. Players lining up right and being in position and making plays is what matters.

Everytime some Dolphins official mentions SB it gives me the creeps. It sounds to me as if they are buttering our a.....e. Hey, Mike Sherman, Hi....
Posted by: oscar canosa | February 16, 2012 at 04:37 PM
Sally, are you ever going to tire of me proving you wrong? I am tired of it already so I shall take my leave.
Remember, don't twist my words you ninny. I said Sherman was right and a couple pieces here and there could get us close.
Not IT WILL. Not, we're going to the super bowl. NOT, we will get all of those pieces.
COULD GET US CLOSE. COULD, COULD, COULD.
Yes it's obvious, but the original argument was that he was wrong and a couple of pieces here and there will not get us closer.
You want to talk about idiotic? Go ahead and explain to the rest of the blog how that statement is wrong because so far you have skated around it like Sidney Crosby, concussion and all.

One of the first things Shula said when he came to Miami was, "I am not a miracle worker..". Then he proceeded to do just about that.

Good post DC, it has left me a humbled man. I shouldn't have attacked back (shame on me!). I know better than that. I hope LOL takes your advice as well.
Damnit I was doing so well lately and got sucked in again! HAHAHA Oh well, see ya guys, no hard feelings LOL, just a difference in opinions.

Thanks Phins. But don't listen to me, I'm full of hot air (so say the blog trolls).
Then again, I'd rather die on my feet (and behind my OWN post name) than live on my knees (behind made up troll names).

Every year in the NFL is a new year (obviously) and (perhaps not so obvious) every year it's a brand new squad. Every year. Witness the 49ers last year. Witness us from the 1-15 year to 11-5 and winning the division the next year. This ain't the NFL or the Major League Baseball of the 1970s anymore. The NFL's official goal is "parity." The cap rules and all that stuff.
Every single comment here is pure conjecture. We are "close" as are many teams.
The possible record of our team next year ranges from 6-10 to 14-2. Seriously. We have no way of knowing.
We could easily have been 10-6 THIS year!!!
Posted by: Mustache Man | February 16, 2012 at 04:53 PM
Witness the Giants, for that matter. They're very average many years and then they pop up and win a super bowl every once in a while. For a long time the Redskins were like that. In fact, every single year there is a team like this year's 49ers or Lions, or the Fins in 2008. A team can go from 1-15 to 12-4 in one year, obviously. It's a new team every year. It is totally incorrect to think that "rebuilding" has to take 3 to 5 years.
We have only a few years left with Reggie Bush in his prime. We might have a few good bounces *next* year. In 4 years 60% of the roster will have turned over. Right now we have Bush, Marshall, Bess, not to mention D. Thomas and some others who showed promise. We might go 14-2 next year. We might not, but it is certainly possible.

peyton manning cant throw anymore, thats the problem home

im new to this blog, but i like mike sherman's attitude. he spoke @ a press conference(isn't it great to hear coaches now that the tuna curtain has been lifted) and i like what he said.could any of you imagine the don or jj saying "i watched the tape and we totally suck".coaches are teachers and one of the things they do is instill confidence. there are many things i didn't like about sparano, but his guys would run thru a wall for him because he had confidence in them.as for needs: getting mario williams would be huge. i think john jerry and lydon murtha may be good enough to make the right side go. with or without mario i would use the 8th pick to get another pass rusher (ala the giants) and i would trade into the late 1st round and aquire the services of mr brandon weeden...yeah i know he is 28, but if he was 23 he'd be the 2nd qb taken.last season he beat luck, rg3, and tannehill. his comp percentage was 72% @ over 8 yard per completion & he had 37td's to 13int's!!! he spent 5 years in the NY yankee organization so he is a mature athelete who knows pressure and (i believe)can start from day 1 and be the man for 8-10 years. by the way matt flynn(who is by know means proven) is 26 years old. check out this site for all weeden's stats: http://www.cfbstats.com/2011/player/521/1010539/passing/split.html

14-2,lol hilarious
Posted by: dusty bottoms | February 16, 2012 at 05:01 PM
No doubt we'll see a much improved team but a couple of pieces? Marino and Marks brothers in their prime maybe.
It's just coach-speak nothing more, nothing less. If Sherman is all that, he knows we need more than a couple of pieces. Problem is, who's gonna find them? Ireland? LMAO
Posted by: cocoajoe | February 16, 2012 at 05:09 PM
I think coach Sherman looks the same problem with a fresh eyes, and found how the dolphins could easy scores TD instead of FG in the red zone.
Some people here pointed that Bess, Hartline, Marshall will be outstanding, or at last more productive in a West Coast offense, and I hope that will be true, with a specialist like coach Sherman.
Posted by: adrian solorza | February 16, 2012 at 05:14 PM
sherman has never done anything
Posted by: dusty bottoms | February 16, 2012 at 05:21 PM
What is the new OC going to say? The team stinks and we have no chance?
Talk about predictable. The ol' few pieces away line. That's what last place teams usually say.

2 yrs ago was the first to say go after B-Marsh and Karlos Dansby in free agency
Everyone shot Home down including Coconut Head Kelly on the SS blog
They said "too expensive, not the right guys, it's never gonna happen Home, so stop blogging about it"
Well
they both signed and Dansby is one of the best LBs in the NFL and WR B-Marsh just won MVP of the Pro Bowl w 4TDs
Home wanted Mike Iupati as our first round pick
An outstanding offensive lineman who would have played right next to Jake Long for a decade
Iupati instead was drafted after to San Francisco w their first pick
#77 Mike Iupati is directly responsible for much of San Fran's success pancaking defensive linemen and then taking out linebackers in the 2nd level
San Fran does NOT have a franchise QB but Iupati's blocking has given the journeyman QB great success
Instead the fish picked DE Jared Brokendick who sat out his entire rookie year w a two time broken leg and now is having some success and then doing a pedophile dance. ???
Last year Home was right on w the position of great need - center - Pouncey pick
however Fraud Poser Boy sean smith was rated near dead last by Pro Football Focus @ CB and Home despises this Shucking & Jiving JackAZZZZ goofy player

The Heat came from one game from winning the Championship and were better than the Celtics and the Bulls last year in the Play Offs
This season the Heat has their best start in franchise history
Get your facts straight!
Marshall, Manning, Moss
Go Phins!
Posted by: Home for Christ's Sake ; ) | February 16, 2012 at 06:14 PM
Home never had one post on Thomas
was never even on Home's board
However
Think RB Thomas will do just fine given the opportunity
Thomas can run & move the pile
Also was the best rookie RB in the AFC EAST in yardage despite being out injured w a hammy for many games
Reggie will start though
Marshall, Manning, Moss
Go Phins!

DC.....
If Sherman says he thinks the talent is there...then that tells ME....that he and Coach Philbin agree that IRELAND was NOT the problem....
Sherman has laid the groundwork to say that he believes he has some talent to work with....I for one am optimistic....he could just as easily had said he will need some time to het "his guys in here to fit his system"....which would have meant temper your enthusiasm for a few seasons....
but....
Sherman chose to speak with confidence about the personnel...which should give YOU the fan optimism that he can start producing points right away.....
This gentlemen....is NOT a bad thing....regardless of what Armando tells you....
Posted by: Kris | February 16, 2012 at 06:23 PM
KRIS MUST BE NOT FROM FLORIDA. HE'S TOO SMART TO BE ONE OF THE LOW IQ MIAMI FANS ........

Phins78,
Your simply another one of those ATHEIST people. Who doesn't know SQUAT.
Your just another worthless PIG.
Posted by: Paul | February 16, 2012 at 06:33 PM
So I hear a lot of people complaining about armando, and they're completely justified.
Instead of crying on his blog, why don't people petition to get rid of him?
Everyone knows he's an arrogant idiot that thinks he knows more than people paid millions for their knowledge, one that annoys the readers, and one that doesn't do anything without his own bias, whether it's trying to manipulate the fan base or ingratiate himself to whoever..
Why do people not just take the final step and be rid of him?
Posted by: Chris | February 16, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Miami has:
Best WR core in AFC East
Best RB tandum in AFC East
Second best overall defense in AFC East - only because NYJ has Revis (our LB and DL are equivalent)
Worst QB situation in AFC East
There's the reason we're at the bottom.
A few pieces away? Wrong. 1 piece away. A top 10 QB.
Posted by: MiamiD20 | February 16, 2012 at 06:35 PM
Aloco, mike sherman is saying it. Not me. Dummy. Im yelling you the biggest piece they are missing is qb and that is rg3. Bottom damn line!
