Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III are conducting a bit of a battle for the first overall selection in the NFL draft. And both are using the charm offensive.
Both have already begun interview sessions with teams. Luck has already spoken with the Colts at the Combine. RG3 spoke with Philadelphia Thursday evening and said he's scheduled to talk to Kansas City, Washington, and Indianapolis.
Luck shaved his mountain man beard for the event. RG3 today was rocking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle socks. Neither will throw at the Combine -- confirmed by both.
Luck is obviously prepared. He knows he is the presumptive first pick. But he cannot blow it by being something of a jerk during the Combine. He can leave no doubt that he'd be a bad teammate in Indy if he's selected and the Colts try to keep Peyton Manning.
So he's not.
"Peyton was my football hero. That's who I modeled myself after. You never truly replace a guy like that ... Who knows what happens."
Luck went on to say that, "If I have the opportunity to learn from a guy like that, of course, you're going to take advantage of it."
Yes, he was coached well. Luck measured an even 6-4 today.
RG3 was equally effective during his media session. The guy was masterful. Obviously, he wants to go No. 1 and cleared the way by saying he wouldn't be a problematic backup behind Peyton Manning.
"It would be an honor to sit back and learn," he said. "I'd hold the clipboard with pride."
Asked to name players he patterns himself after, RG3 mentioned Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, John Elway and Ken Stabler.
Ken Stabler!
One knock against RG2 was erased earlier today when he measured in at 6-2 3/8ths and 223 pounds. Another knock is he played his entire career at Baylor in the shotgun.
"So did Eli Manning and Tom Brady in the Super Bowl," Griffin said.
Griffin also said he's eager to get on the grease board with teams and show him he knows schemes. There is a perception the Baylor offense is simplistic and RG3 might have trouble picking up NFL concepts.
Not true, he said.
"I can't wait to show teams what I know," he said.
Griffin is from a military family. Both parents were sergeants in the service. "It helped me to be the disciplined person I am," he said.
Love this kid!

Hey Armando, heard on the NFL channel today that there could be a possibility the Rams might draft RGIII and trade Sam Bradford. Any truth to this? LMK.

Do you really think Armando has a clue? He is nothing but a columnist for the Herald. He doesn't even know what is going on inside the fins org let alone another team. The Rams do not check in with Armando to give him the inside scoop.

I believe that this year will determine the fate of the Dolphin's GM, Jeff Ireland. This is his time to prove his worth...or not!
On the average, a General Manager has to hit on at least 50% of his draft picks. And, even better on his Free Agent acquisitions, in order to be considered a decent GM. Now, I have to give Ireland credit; there is a lot of talent on this team. But, the lack of a franchise Quarterback is glaring. This is his year to take care of that problem. A problem that should have been addressed last year! Luckily, he passed on Orton. Which turned out to be a good decision. This year's draft is much better than last year's at a lot of positions; QB, Lineman, etc., but weaker in some (Safety comes to mind). So, Ireland doesn't have any reason NOT to take this team to another level talent-wise. No more Parcell's. No more Henning. No more Sparano. This is a coaching staff that Ireland helped put together. Now, he needs to find them a Quarterback. If he does, and the team has a winning season that takes them to the play-offs, he'll be considered a good GM. If not, he'll be let go by Ross and someone else will take his place.
Ireland's the one on the hot seat. He's the one on the clock.
Posted by: Tracy474 | February 24, 2012 at 09:19 PM
Tracy there are only 2 qb's worth anything in this draft. They will go 1 and 2. All the others are backups or practice squad qb's. We will be stuck without a top qb again. Nothing Ireland can do about it.
Posted by: sojase | February 24, 2012 at 09:25 PM
TRACEY, IRELAND IS A GARAGE MACHANIC, I BELIVE DOLPINS FINISH 4 AND 12 THIS YEAR ATTENCE WILL AVERAGE 27 THOUSAND,MARLINS WILL MAKE PLAYOFFS AND ODIN WILL FINALLY GET THROUGH ALL 8 WEEKS OF RE-HAB.

I am not impressed with Tannehill. Not at all. I wouldn't pick him in any round.
Posted by: DevilsAdvocate | February 24, 2012 at 08:58 PM
I agree with your sentiment, Devil. He is moving closer to a top ten prospect according to some but that is probably more due to the Miami connection than anything.
After the combine and his pro day it will be interesting to see if he has any staying power.

Ask Wanny what he would do!
Posted by: doral2 | February 24, 2012 at 10:08 PM
Flynn ranked #19 of QB's prior to 2008 draft, which Ireland was here for. Obviously he didn't see a franchise QB then or he is very bad at evaluating. Not sure about this Flynn deal.
Posted by: TC | February 24, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Why are people still complaining about losing nolan? His defenses never made stops when we needed them and the only blitzes I ever saw were all out that never got to the qb and always left the middle wide open. Griffen is nothing like russel or young.griffen is smart and actually works to get better.

The Rams may draft RG3 to backup Bradford.
Posted by: MJ | February 25, 2012 at 12:27 AM
Good evening all,
Sup redsky! What's crackin' in your neck of da woods?
Well our Fins started strong in an attempt to "win the off season"...They won the coin toss and scored a better pick in each round! Thanks for small miracles. To those that say that is no big deal consider we had to give Minn a 4th rounder just to flop one spot to land OL V. Carey at 19!! I still think the Vikes were bluffing that they would take Carey.
Looks like the QB scenario's all have their warts. Let's hope to heck that Philbin and Ireland together can sift through the pitfall minefield.
For the record, starting off the season with Moore at QB would not be the end of the world for me. Fact is he went 6-3 down the stretch and was looking the part more and more with ZERO off season. I know people want an all universe QB to come out of the genie's bottle and fill #13's jumbo shoes but easier said than done.
Manning would make a hell of a candidate save for HUGE caveats like his severe injuries, possible limitations on his ability to even play AND he is very long in the tooth. Indy is talking about parting ways and he is their version of Wonka's Golden Wrapper. If he could play at a high level for a few years I believe Indy would still draft Luck but have Manning tutor him a year and then peddle Manning. Cap be damned!
Flynn seems like a good option if Philbin is 100% sold BUT, that is big $$ and GB is gonna wring everything outta the suitor for his services.
The truth is I am not seeing much I like in any QBs aside from Luck and RGIII. I still would take a flier on QB Case Keenum as a late round groomer. He is a potential Breesish type (short but with some mobility, good arm strength, quick release and good anticipation).
I would rain check Tannehill, Ozweiller and Couples. I think QB B Wilson has some decent ability but would only take him because you can get him later in the draft. Said another way, I don't think Ireland will mortgage so many future picks for RGIII and the others simply won't merit where they get taken aside from the late round guys.
People have to remember that simply because Miami has great need at QB doesn't mean the QBs chosen early will become studs.
That's my take. I respect other's viewpoints on draft/FA answers and it will be fun to watch this bird hatch come draft time and see if she flies.
Cheers,

Apparently, the only way to know if a player can learn schemes in the NFL is the wonderlic test. That will be the difference between Luck and RG3. I have to say, RG3 sounds a lot smarter than Andrew Luck.

Mandi moss will play for no guaranteed $: grab him!! Moss Marshall bush Moore we are super bowl contenders!!! Moss on a mission this year
Posted by: jim | February 25, 2012 at 09:16 AM
Ok I got to a computer. Jason Cole tweeted that Moss said he'll play for no guaranteed $.
We should grab him and Moss, Marshall, Bush, Moore and Clay and Thomas are instant super bowl contenders!!
You are stupid if you disagree with me.
Posted by: Tim Couch | February 25, 2012 at 09:23 AM
Actually Rob they get the 8th pick in First, 9th in second, 8th in 3rd.. and so on.
Posted by: thavafin | February 25, 2012 at 09:28 AM
I still say we move up if required and pick WR Justin Blackmon and if doable 2013 aim for Matt Barkley.
The addition of Blackmon is going to be upside as he is a Play Maker of which we need. Blackmon is going to open up HUGE opportunities for Marshall, Bush and the entire O. The D is going to look much better as our O puts up points. Even an average QB like Moore will do. I am not interested in Tannehill at this juncture.
Shore up the O line as needed and upgrade the D. Fix the QB in FA whoever that may be as that is also slim pickings just as this 2012 draft is very slim pickings for not only the QB but other position players.

IM WITH NY "G"
WE SHOULD GO AFTER THE BEST PLAYMAKER AVAILABLE. EITHER TRADE UP FOR BLACKMON OR IM NOT EVEN OPPOSED TO TRADING UP FOR TRENT RICHARDSON AND PUTTING REGGIE BUSH ON THE BLOCK. WE COULD GET A SECOND ROUND PICK FOR HIM NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. IF ALL THIS DOESNT PAN OUT I SAY WE TRADE BACK PICK UP A SECOND AND GO AFTER BEST LB AVAILABLE EITHER UPSHAW OR KUECHLY

A few GMs have come out to say they studied the film on Moss's last season (3 teams in one seasons dumped him!), and they all say he can't run or get open anymore.
So I guess this blogger knows better than GM's around the league. We should worship he word or we are stupid.
Posted by: sojase | February 25, 2012 at 10:12 AM
NYG, Blacmon will be no use if the QB doesn't have time to throw. Routes take time to develop. Fix the oline and the receivers we have will do much better. Take the OT with the first pick and our oline is set with top players for a decade. Jerry can play RG or RT, Sporanass just didn't know how to develop talent.
From there on out, with a solid oline across, we can then focus on luxury picks.
Posted by: Carl | February 25, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Lots of folks talking about "There's only two QB's in this draft" are wrong! This class is a whole lot better than last year's...and there will be some starters out of this draft class that go in later rounds. The problem is that no one knows who it will be. There will be some busts (there always are), some who are hyped by the media to be better than they really are, and there will be some diamond-in-the-roughs, guys who come from out of no where (a la Brady).
This is the year for Miami to get a QB! Either free-agent (Manning, Flynn) or in the draft.
So, it's up to Ireland & Co. to make sure that happens. Our GM's job is on-the-line!
Decide wisely, Jeffy!

Carl,
For some reason, perhaps it's the "MO" of this team I believe we will always have needs. Given the choice of Blackmon, Kalil, Reiff, all in the top 12, it's going to be tough in the end for us to move up. If I could I would love to get Kalil but I think he will be gone at #2 overall.
But I agree, we need to complete the O line as you said but I just don't want Blackmon falling into the pats or Jets hands as they have been sniffing around those two.
1. Andrew Luck*
2. Matt Kalil
3. Robert Griffin III*
4. Trent Richardson*
5. Morris Claiborne*
6. Quinton Coples
7. Melvin Ingram
8. Michael Brockers*
9. Luke Kuechly*
10. Justin Blackmon*
11. Courtney Upshaw
12. Riley Reiff*
13. Mark Barron
14. David DeCastro*
15. Janoris Jenkins
16. Dre Kirkpatrick*
17. Fletcher Cox*
18. Ryan Tannehill
19. Mike Adams
20. Cordy Glenn
21. Jonathan Martin*
22. Jerel Worthy*
23. Kendall Wright
24. Devon Still
25. Dontari Poe
26. Michael Floyd
27. Brock Osweiler*
28. Chandler Jones*
29. Andre Branch
30. Coby Fleener
31. Brandon Thompson
32. Nick Perry
Posted by: NY "G" | February 25, 2012 at 10:31 AM
No chance Blackmon, and very possible, DeCastro or Reiff fall to us, NY"G".
Posted by: oscar canosa | February 25, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Long
Cognito
Pouncey
Reiff
Jerry
Looks good to me, set and solid for a long time to come. Then you can add, reach for the luxury picks.
Posted by: Carl | February 25, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Just figure out Reiff and Jerry for RG/RT.

Has Ireland been fired yet?
Posted by: Bill | February 25, 2012 at 11:16 AM
I also agree it's time to take a chance at a big name young gun. How much more of the status quo can we endure? Draft RG3 or Luck and take the hit. Unless there is some gem hidden in the picking that I do not know about, it time to "make or break" as they say. Make a run at the best QB in the draft and do not look back. To be honest. I would rather see the Dolphins show some balls for a change and move up to get the QB they want and desperately need. I am willing to sacrifice everything for the top QB pick. After all. Can it really hurt this team? I don't think so.
Who cares what it costs. Do I need to say Mike Ditka and the NO Saints.
Posted by: John Valdes | February 25, 2012 at 11:16 AM
I have to question whether Long can make it through a full season or a full career. He's got a bunch of nagging injuries that will only get worse.
Posted by: Steve K. | February 25, 2012 at 11:19 AM
No way Indy is passing on Luck. Forget about drafting up. They need a franchise QB as much as we do. They see that if you pass up a golden opportunity to take a franchise QB, you can easily go 10 years or more searching for one.
No way anyone is trading up for Luck. Indy will have him signed before the draft.

Long had a full season AND preseason off last year and his injuries got worse in addition to adding 2 new ones. I'd love for him to be healthy, but realistically, I just dont see it.

Other then Luck, its a lean year for QB's. If we trade up it better be for Luck.
Posted by: Ron Son | February 25, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Asking for Tannehill shows how desperate we are for a QB. Ireland should've drafted TWO last year instead of the backup RB.
Posted by: Ron Son | February 25, 2012 at 11:36 AM
They could draft Tannehill in the 2nd or 3rd rd as a WR and 3rd string QB. He's probably better then Hartline.
Posted by: Bill | February 25, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Victor Cruz would have looked no better than Hartline on this team.
No oline, no top QB...means no way for a receiver to look good. Hartline is better than many of you think. He is scrappy, makes great catches, not afraid of contact.

Dear Mr. Salguero
I am sorry I missed your radio show on Thur and fri this past week,... I had some early Doctor appointments.
With that being said I have been reading a series of books to enhance my wordly knowledge and wisdom.
I won't give out the name of the series of books, but I will say this.....Waldo is very hard to find.
I also find pop up story books to be very scary with each turn of the page.
Anywhoo some of my other thoughts.
Mr. Aloco says that Jeff Ireland is a garage Mechanic.
The old ladies transmission has on out on her 1992 Pontiac so we gave Mr. Ireland a call and he told us to to go to a used car lot and trade in or trade down our 92 pontiac because there are many acorns to be found on a used car lot.
We then recieved a call from the garage owner, a guy named Mr. Ross and he said other people's surgically repaired cars would give us a few good years of driving.
I read a post from Rob in the OC saying we should look at Casey Keenum in the later rounds of the NFL draft.
I have been saying this myself also about Casey Keenum but I thought is was the Chemtrails making me say this, is Rob in the OC sniffing the Chemtrails also ?
Oh well thats all I have for now.
Soiled :)
P.S. Dear Fellow Phin fans, I joined Ustream to watch Mr. Salguero's radio show live and he will answer some of your questions in the live chat box.
Disclaimer: I am not a paid schill and I am not involved with any Suerpac trying to further Mr. Salguero's agenda's involving the NWO or his or multi media conglomerate.

There are some 2nd tier LT's in the Draft that can effectively play RT for us. So, that leaves us with a Pass Rusher as our #1 pick. NY"G" likes Michael Brockers. I like Melvin Ingram and his versatility and smarts. Then there's Quinton Coples.

Here's an option... Trade Brandon Marshall and the #8 pick and maybe a 4th or 5th rounder to ST Louis for the #2 pick and draft RG3...
Bradford gets a WR and we get our QB without giving up two years worth of picks.
I think we'll be fine in a West Coast system with or without Marhall, as QB is the key and RG3 would be good in the system.
Thoughts???
Posted by: IWANNABEGM | February 25, 2012 at 04:00 PM
iwanna,
Are you serious or kidding? St Louis is going to get WAY more for their #2 than a #8 and slow greasy hand receiver with a couple of late rounders. They will get two #1's plus extras.
