Super Bowl should convince Dolphins about pass rushers

Super Bowl Sunday!

Will we ever spend such a day with the Dolphins in the game?

(Alarm clock sounds, dream over.)

The easy thing to discuss in explaining the gap between the Dolphins and a Super Bowl team is by saying the quarterback play isn't good enough in Miami. Well, duh.

But my column in today's Miami Herald suggests the Dolphins would do well to follow the New York Giants lead and address their pass-rush in the coming draft. Yes, I believe the team will do what it must with the quarterback and right tackle spot this offseason. But I believe aquiring a pass-rusher is key to turning the Dolphins into a contender.

I also believe the draft -- particularly the early part -- will be dedicated to improving the pass rush. That's how you help Cameron Wake be more than a one-man rush. That's how you turn Tom Brady, who the Dolphins play twice a year, into a guy who seems at times intimidated.

Let me make this more clear: I believe if the Dolphins stay at No. 8 or 9 in the first round, they will draft a pass-rusher. Simply, I don't think there will be a right tackle that will be a value at that high spot. I'm also thinking the Dolphins will address QB in free agency -- either through Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn.

At No. 8 or No. 9 the Dolphins might be looking at adding North Carolina's Quinton Coples, or South Carolina's Melvin Ingram, or Alabama's Courtney Upshaw.

So I see a pass-rusher in Miami's future. And I think that's sound strategy.

If you don't believe me, check out today's Super Bowl and watch the New York defense give Tom Brady a workout.

Nonsense to the Belichek argument.

What did Shula ever win with out Arnsparger? I will tell you. Nothing.

Shula was smart enough to find the right guy for DC and keep him there. Parcells too. Cowher too. The list goes on.

I rarely root for the NFC. But, I'm rooting for the Giants to keep the ego B&B duo in check.

The Patriots should not only give Lee Evans a ring if they win but make him an honorary member of the team and take him to the White House as well!!

Great CEO's are great because they know how to find the right leaders to help them, not because they know more about every aspect of the business than anybody else. Same thing in football.

Say what you want about Parcells, but taking 4 teams to the playoffs and having so many of his disciples become top coaches (both coaches in this SB), says something.

He took one job too many, he arrived here burned out and put too much faith in his puppets. Of course he didn't even coach here so that doesn't count to his HC history.

Didn't wayne also go to school at Miami... If so dump then dump Marshall for Wayne. Manning with Wayne along with Hartline and bess. sounds good to me. Even gates would be usefull with Manning

Awesome Armando. Good work!

Peyton Manning and Brandon Marshall are actually buddies.

Your suggestion is both uninformed and ludicrous.

Keep your day job, Steve. The NFL won't be calling.

Fire Ireland and get rid of the Parcells stench.

Parcells should be in the Hall of Shame for leaving us with Ireland, Sparano, and Henne. All garbage.

Who is the best QB ever Brady or Montana?

DevilsA,

Your only helping an argument I've made time and again on this blog regarding how great Shula really was.

Your right, the architect of the No Name D of the 70's was Arnsbarger but then you can make the argument that he had some HOF talent to work with and played sound disciplined Football.

The genius of Arnbarger showed through when he realized he had a small but quick group up front and went into a hybrid 3/4 back when NOBODY used it with the Killer B's moving the light Bokamper to OLB and using Duhe at MLB with L.Gordon when not plugging him at DE or OLB as well. If you back and see the play were Duhe picks Richard Todd of the Jets and juggles the ball for a TD in the AFC Chap. game you'll notice he was coming from the OLB/DE spot not from his usual MLB position. He also realized that the Blackwood Bros weren't the fastes and always kept one about 15 yards off the line while the other was hovering close in run support as well (usually Glenn)

I believe that J.Robbie killed the franchise when he let Bobby Bethard walk to Wash. as G.M. in 77 and let Shula pull double duty as HC/G.M. cause Shula is one of the worst G.M.'s in NFL history and his drafts speak for themselves. His lousy drafts are what keeps Marino from fulfilling a S.B. victory.

"IF" not for Marino then Shula probably goes the way of Landry and Noll in the late 80's as the last of the BIG 3 to wash out. I am a Dolphins Fan and loved Shula even with his deficiencies because the thing about Shula the G.M. has been on my mind since the late 80's in actuality but had Marino not been gift wrapped for Shula in 83 then those less than mediocre teams Shula puts together without Arnsbarger but Tom Olividoti as DC would have got him canned by 88 at the latest and don't forget his great trade of Anthony Carter who's USFL rights we owned for Robin Sindlien either, a perennial Pro Bowl WR for a journeyman LB. WITHOUT MARINO SHULA WOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED IN THE 80'S!!!!

------------------------------------------------ Good post....but for the record it's 5 teams if you count the 2008 Fins---

...on another note....glad for the new censoring program......if u want to excercise free speech with personal attacks and swearing, etc. do it in a general chat room...this blog should be for talking football in a civil manner...

,,,, finally, just wondering why many are quick to criticize Coach Philbin and his staff ALREADY.. how 'bout we give him a chance to show whether he bears fruit BEFORE we condemn the tree...

well dusty i would beg to differ with you about our offense. we had a 1000 yard rusher and a 1000 yard receiver for the first time in years. every team in the nfl has a bad offensive showing now and then and we did,i'll give you that. but our defense was our downfall in many games that we were leading in the third and forth quarters.the numbers don't lie.

Buster/ Devils A.,

Bill Parcells took over as HC of the Giants in 83 when Ray Perkins left and it was Perkins staff that included Belichik which he inherits!! The architect of those teams was G.M. Floyd Reese NOT Parcells, SHEESH!!

I must say I'm pretty worried about Jake Long next year and beyond. The guy has 5 different nagging injuries.

The Pats cannot defend the Giants receivers. The Giants can defend the Pats.

Giants by 10

George Young was the GM

I'll never forgive Parcells for his mistreatment of Dolphin great Jason Taylor.

Anyone else concerned about this all-star coaching staff being assembled?

We've lost experience at every position except OC.

More than half of the coaches have NO NFL experience at all.

And they are not coming from BCS bowl teams. They're coming from Dartmouth and Temple.

There goes Rain Man again-NICE-LOL!

Even though you can't under value the defense today, I'm getting into thr rematch vibe.

Coughlin/Manning vs. Bellichick/Brady? Rematch?

If we were putting our money where our Mouths are, I'd go Patriots all day long this time around(not sure that came out right).

Anyway, I'm betting the Pats run away with it mid-3rd quarter.

PS: Kris, I'm doing a little Party/get together here as well. I don't have a wife to worry about, but a Brunette's the next best thing.

She's already on the alcohol supplies and appetizers. I'll supply her with "Stories" for Monday.

Have a Happy Super Bowl All!!!!

George Young was the GM

TheSMF | February 05, 2012 at 12:56 PM

SMF,

Excuse me your right Floyd Reese was hired in house from the scouting Dept. later but you get the point about who really built those teams for Wellington Mara.

The Giants beat the Pats in week 9 this season. Is that the rematch you're referring to?

Fin4,

You think Parcell's is Hall Of Fame worthy?

I've been saying for 4 years:
Parcells builds .500 teams in the age of parity.
BFD

TheSMF ,

Yeah we have a pathetic college coaching staff and scum for a GM. We'll be 5-11 next year but why be concerned. They stink.

What concerns me is that the WR coach and the asst WR coach have no NFL experience.

I don't have a wife to worry about, but a Brunette's the next best thing.

And after the game, you can just deflate "her" and put her back in the box.

What could be easier?

odin, by the way glad your back!!

Look personal bias aside, he IS a 2 time S.B. Champ HC an they always get in regardless with multiple titles on their resume, so he will eventually get in much to our chagrin! I'm simply stating why he doesn't get in on a 1st ballot. The FACT the HOF thought the Defensive game plan of the 91 S.B. such a masterpiece that the game plan itself is in the HALL then it tells you who they think WON the game. By the way hate Belichik all you want but the 2001 game plan Vs. the Rams greatest show on turf should be in their as well IMO. He takes the Pats to the S.B. but only after hiring Belichik as Assis. HC in 96 when they go on their 97 run with a leap in D ranking same with the Jets. Then you analyze what Belichik has done on his own and it SHADOWS Parcells BIG TIME and the HALL voters I think consider that, he will get in but NOT 1st ballot.

SMF,

No, season games are what they are. Good to look at, judge, compare and make projections.

I don't think they equal Super Bowl Games in terms of preparation and player level execution. Not to mantion bragging rights and all the hoopla involved. The Lights, the cameras, the action-LOL!

I was refering to a Super Bowl rematch. I know the rosters have "Been Churned(in Sparano Speak)". But a lot of the Coaches and Key Players(skill positions) remain the same.

In regards to a rematch centered around Coughlin/Manning vs. Brady/Belli I have to go Belli big time in this one. He and Brady have both been held up to a lot of scrutiny, deep down feel the Giants "got away with one(not saying it's true. Just that they FEEL this way)" and will have something major to prove(chip on shoulder).

I am CONVINCED that the Pats are going to put it to the Giants! They'll be running up the score by midway 3rd quarter. Book It!

Wahoo McDaniel | February 05, 2012 at 01:06 PM

Wahoo you sucked as a LB, stick to the Pro Wrestling circuit. Oh! that's right the WCW folded, well you can always go kiss Big Vince McMahon's BUTT.

I say give the man in charge credit.

Who is to say Belichek would have won a SB without Brady? We will never know.

Does Cowher have his record without LeBeau? We will never know.

To say an HC only got there because of the talent they had on the coaching staff or playing field doesn't work with me. Whether they brought the talent in or inherited it, they knew how to run the show to maximize their potential. That's what counts.

Fin4 great assessment earlier and in the last one. I have to agree.

I think Parcells has earned a spot in the Hall as a Great Coach back in that day and age. All the other hoopla aside, his teams were dominant and they got the Rings.

As a GM? NO! As a Vice President? NO! As a First Ballot Hall of Famer? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

PS: After what he did here, I can't put my bias aside, but you get the picture-LOL.

Well, shutting down the computer and moving into festivities mode. Go Giants!

Does Cowher have his record without LeBeau? We will never know.

DevilsAdvocate | February 05, 2012 at 01:16 PM

Truth be told I think neither has a thing without Rothlisberger falling to pick 9 of the 04 draft! They had the D's as the 96 S.B. proved when they hammered Dallas but they couldn't even with a great RB AND even in that ERA win one!!

Can you for a minute imagine Dan Marino 94-98 as the QB of that team!! Remember the WR's they had, Thigpen,Hastings(who Odonnell misses wide open on the late pick 6) and Slash to go with Bam at RB with only Dallas sporting a better OL!!

Cowher NEVER wins one without Big Ben and Tolin is a joke of a HC and only a caretaker really of the system

I of course meant Tomlin

fin4life,

Sorry man, gotta get in this conversation about Big Ben and the Steelers. Did you watch the Super Bowl against Seattle? Big Ben was TERRIBLE in that game and the Steelers were lucky with some of the officiating. Steelers didn't win that Super Bowl because of Ben, they won it DESPITE Ben. He looked nervous all day and was hit often. He just never got on track. I forget his numbers but they were pretty bad.

Anyways, just wanted to get that in. I'm off to a party. Enjoy the game fellas....I'm picking the Giants 31-27.....cheers!

Parcells should be in the Hall of Shame for leaving us with Ireland, Sparano, and Henne. All garbage.

...the shame is on owner Ross.....and he knows it...

....and he knows exactly the reason Parcells opted out..

...and the true story has yet to be written...

...that's what happens when an owner makes financial decisions, when football decisions are more appropriate..

...so Ross saved money by not bringing in a veteran, despite the fact that Henne had not progressed well between 2009 and the start of the 2010 season...

...he listened to the advise of the "learner" viz Tony S, instead of the "learned" viz Parcells....

....in short, Ross was penny wise and pound foolish while the blind led the blind...

...the blame, and the shame , is his, not Parcells'........

...and those are the facts , like it or not...

DC....

Sorry man...my brother is a huge Giants fan....he gets to celebrate a SB once a decade....

That is 3 in my life time....I am yet to even truly remember the FINS play in a SB.....the 84 SB is full of false memories for me...as I was only 10 years old....

So that's why I NEED the PATS to win.....

GO PATS.....

Craig M,

Your right about the 05 S.B. heck the winning TD was thrown by Randle El but it is Ben that gets them there after years of Odonnell, Kordell and even Maddox at QB wasting some incredible D play. The 05 game was gift wrapped for Pitt. by the Refs and to this day I think it was a Head Office conspiracy to hand them the game being Seattle was a market nobody watched outside the Pacific Northwest and wouldn't be the marketing GIANT after the fact selling apparel.

...the blame, and the shame , is his, not Parcells'........

...and those are the facts , like it or not...

Buster | February 05, 2012 at 01:37 PM

Buster,

Good post and agree with you up till the end. Parcells is coaxed back by Huzienga for financial purposes, given a nasty divorce left Parcells in serious financial trouble. He gets guaranteed that IF the team is sold he could collect every dime even if he walks and you don't think golfing buddy Wayne told him he wanted out and needed a big name and decent showing to pump up the teams value??

The fact Parcells has openly admitted he had Rex Ryan with him for three days and later would recommend him to Mike Tannenbaum and the Jets for their HC job with Miami doing nothing about the obvious conflict of interest shows and speaks volumes as well of the sweetheart deal he got and before you doubt this remember were talking about Huzienga who pumped up his Baseball Marlins with the same purpose in mind, we as a fan base were jobbed plain and simple and Ross was the patsie with the huge pocket book.

Sick of being sick @ 12:08.....that was funny....

Parcels will get in the HOF.....

This year was just a kick in the britches...as the voters took him down a notch....and I for one am happy....

Maybe if they had drafted Jason Pierre Paul as advertised instead of Jared odrick we wouldn't have this blog today. We already had a million d linemen.

....and Ross was the patsie with the huge pocket book.....

-----------------------------------------------

Like I said cuz.....the blame is on Ross..remember, the issue was over a personnel decision.....and what the heck did he , or will he ever, know about football personnel....NADA !

His blame...but yes the whole fiasco is a crying shame..and we the fans are left with the collateral damages...vast as they have become....

Tannehill and foles are both busts. Wouldnt take either one.

....just to follow up....
..re: the conflict of interest over recommending Rex...

...if we , the fans, knew how much inside comraderie goes on in the league regarding coaching vacancies/hires, we'd probably be amazed....

Parcels will get in the HOF.....

Kris | February 05, 2012 at 01:55 PM

You and me both, NOT being 1st ballot will forever be part of his legacy know, bwaaaah haaaah!

I agree that Brady will get a workout. But I am sure the they will have something up there sleaves. In so far as intimidating Brady. 3 years ago, yep, not anymore. He is turning into a tough guy.
We were beat on a lot of 3rd downs this year. Too many. A pass rusher can change that easily. That would be a top 3 position of need. In fact, I would get 2 if I could. Having 3 pass rusher, great tacklers would make teams run the ball a bit more.
Moores stats for this year are comparable to Mannings in New York. Give him some time. For sure sign someone great if he is there, but I don't think that the person we are looking for will be available. So get great game changing players at other positions.

Like I said cuz.....the blame is on Ross..remember, the issue was over a personnel decision.....and what the heck did he , or will he ever, know about football personnel....NADA !

Buster | February 05, 2012 at 02:02 PM

What personnel decision do you mean, Ross stayed out of his way in 09?

Once again you will see, that which many of you will struggle a little harder to deny:

Eli
is
Eli-te

...if we , the fans, knew how much inside comraderie goes on in the league regarding coaching vacancies/hires, we'd probably be amazed....

Buster | February 05, 2012 at 02:07 PM

More than likely true but crapping on Miami openly on ESPN after walking was classless and can't remember the last time someone admitted helping their former teams Div. rival, just sayin partner!

The difference between Eli and Brees and Rodgers?

Eli has not already won his last SB Trophy.

Unfortunately, I'm convinced the 49ers will win today.

It's been a great season for our Dolphins, but San Francisco is just a more complete team and Bill Walsh is a master who has had two weeks to gameplan for Marino.

Niners by 21 (but hope I'm wrong!)

This is so funny to me that Armando is saying that we need another pass rusher but that Jared odrick is not a bust. And what about our boy from Clemson, basically a first rounder at what....the 32th pick? How did he turn out.
But let's get another pass rusher or tackle, because everybody knows what u don't Armando, that it's the playmakers in this game and in this league, that get to this game.

So fin4life.....you accept my presentation of the facts , but not my conclusion....

.....I can live with that :-)

.....but now a question on a related, but more pertinent subject...

.......do you agree that Coach Philbin is being unfairly critiqued before he's had a chance to turn this thing around, and thereby show his worth?....

....and isn't that really a shame ?

My daughter is only 10 and I just caught her doing lewd things with the pickles.

Kids grow up to fast these days.

Buster I don't see where Philbin is getting unfairly critiqued. If you are expecting a fan base to be 100% behind anybody well that will never happen. It seems you are overreacting to maybe a few posters not happy with the decision.

What personnel decision do you mean, Ross stayed out of his way in 09?
Posted by: fin4life | February 05, 2012 at 02:09 PM

------------------------------------------------
apologies...I missed this question until now...

..yes in 2009...but in between '09 and '10, the lack of Henne's progress convinced Parcells to look for other possibilities at QB...

...he requested the team to bring in a veteran QB...and that is when Ross balked..

...by that time, Parcells and Tony S were at odds, and using Ireland as the go between...

.....we don't have the entire story, but it's safe to say that Tony S was going to live or die with Henne at QB, and Ross decided to leave things as they were.....

...and that was what prompted the schism with Parcells...at least it was the catalyst

re: the premature criticizers of Coach Philbin....it is to them I am reacting..

....why not wait and see? That is all I'm saying

Buster,

Your presentation and conclusions are sound it's just that I believe Parcells came to Miami out of personal need and walked through the motions probably knowing before hand that he could walk sooner than later given the specifics of his deal and 1st hand knowledge of what Huzienga's plans were, my question is if you don't get my point of view as well??

I like the hire of Philbin alone based on his O terminology, that said lets be honest he NEVER really ran that O in G.B. and his Coaching staff seems a bit short on experience. That said Judging the man without 1st seeing his vision unfold after at least 2 Seasons is completely unfair and here we agree 100%.

I think he's just walking into a situation with a jaded fanbase but winning will cure that quickly and even in defeat if he can show some innovation on O I for one will give him a pass for at least a couple of seasons before critiquing him, so lets hope we found a diamond in the rough.

Total agreement.....:-)
