Super Bowl should convince Dolphins about pass rushers

Super Bowl Sunday!

Will we ever spend such a day with the Dolphins in the game?

(Alarm clock sounds, dream over.)

The easy thing to discuss in explaining the gap between the Dolphins and a Super Bowl team is by saying the quarterback play isn't good enough in Miami. Well, duh.

But my column in today's Miami Herald suggests the Dolphins would do well to follow the New York Giants lead and address their pass-rush in the coming draft. Yes, I believe the team will do what it must with the quarterback and right tackle spot this offseason. But I believe aquiring a pass-rusher is key to turning the Dolphins into a contender.

I also believe the draft -- particularly the early part -- will be dedicated to improving the pass rush. That's how you help Cameron Wake be more than a one-man rush. That's how you turn Tom Brady, who the Dolphins play twice a year, into a guy who seems at times intimidated.

Let me make this more clear: I believe if the Dolphins stay at No. 8 or 9 in the first round, they will draft a pass-rusher. Simply, I don't think there will be a right tackle that will be a value at that high spot. I'm also thinking the Dolphins will address QB in free agency -- either through Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn.

At No. 8 or No. 9 the Dolphins might be looking at adding North Carolina's Quinton Coples, or South Carolina's Melvin Ingram, or Alabama's Courtney Upshaw.

So I see a pass-rusher in Miami's future. And I think that's sound strategy.

If you don't believe me, check out today's Super Bowl and watch the New York defense give Tom Brady a workout.

...and that was what prompted the schism with Parcells...at least it was the catalyst

Buster | February 05, 2012 at 02:33 PM

O.K. remember it well and yes that whole lets see what the Michigan kid has thing didn't sit well with Parcells and will give you that one but in fairness Henne only had part of 09 at that point and it was Parcells call to pull the trigger in the 08 draft as his future QB not anybody elses.

This speculative stuff is harmless, but you'll forgive me if I just can't attach any credibility or seriousness to it.

The fact is, NONE of us were privy to anthing that did/didn't happen in regards to Ross, Parcells, or anyone else involved in their personal dynamics.

We are not part of that process and never will be.

Some may say it's an 'educated guess' but for that to be true you need some real factual basis to build your theory upon.

There is none.

Buster,

By the way on the nasty Parcells divorce situation, I have to say the poor woman deserved every dime. Outside of his CRAP demeanor can you imagine what it must have been like for that lady having to have that fat slob ride her, that and the fact Parcells looks the type to carry some serious B.O. under those man boobs and belly hanging over his privates outside of probably having bad breath, LOL!

Pete...I don't have the text reference...but I've posted it before...

...Parcells expressed concerns over Henne...it's documented...

....one week before opening day, and he split...

..true, we don't have the convos on tape, and as you say never will....

...but it is fact..he wanted another QB in camp, didn't get one, and excercised his contract option, which clearly gave him total decision making on personnel....

...nothing there is refutable, nor new

This makes sense. Especially if the Dolphins can land a QB (Flynn or Manning) and a pass catcher (Finley, DeSean or V-Jax) in FA. Though I think Coples will be gone before the eight spot. Upshaw is probably the next best pass rusher and if the Dolphins nab a pass rusher in FA then they might go after a WR like Michael Floyd or trade down and take Tannehill.

pete,

The deal Huzienga gave Parcells then turning around and putting the team up for sale the following season tells me Parcells new full well he could walk away from the job 14 Million richer when he pleased and that given the facts is an unquestionable theory based on everything that transpired.

fin4life...Parcells is the first one to admit life with him was no picnic......and it's in his book if you should have a chance to read a copy...

fin 4 LIFE.......... PARCE;;S WAS THE BEST THING HAPPENED TO THE DOLPHINS.IF ROSS LET HIM STAY AND NOT LETTING HIM GO .....

SITLL HE WAS THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO HUIENGA TO ALLOW HIM TO SELL THE TEAM ...THE 14 MILLION IS NO THING....''

THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN THE PATS HIRED HIM AS HC ,THEN THE PATS WERE SOLD TO THE KRAFT FAMILY .........

Buster,

Is the book worth the paper it's printed on???

I appreciate your comments and respect them, but I would submit that calling something "an unquestionable theory" is the very definition of a contraditction in terms.

A theory, by definition, is speculative and as such not based on hard facts. It is a guess. Perhaps a good one, but a guess nonetheless.

That's all I'm saying. We shouldn;t confuse the two in lieu of actually knowing what happened.

STILL........I HATE TO SEE BLOGGERS WHO R IGNORANT TALKIN G ABOJUT ONE OF THE BEST PEOPLE IN FOOTBALL ............. SAD TO SEE BLOGGERS WHO HAVE NO JOBS PICKING ON A MAN LIKE PARCELLS ..........

I always wondered on the schism between Parcells and the Dolphins organization. I also wondered why the insistence of TS on playing Henne, if we and all our sisters knew that particular QB sukked. But one thing is a fact and is that, Tony Sparano is as stubborn as a mule. We know, Buster.

...I agree that we need more playmakers. Pass rusher falls into that category of a player that can change a game. Inamounts. I know your opinion is that Odrick has not lived up to his first round selection. I would agree that so far he has not been a worlbeater. I disagree that he is a bust. He was in essance a rookie last year. He got better each week last year. He may never be a First team all NFL guy. This doesn't mean he can't be affective, or he will not get better.

IMO you can never have enough pass rushers, or players that can be flexible as far as scheme, or position. Odrick gives you this. He can play multiple techniques, on any down. Also. If you think about our lack of a tandem pass rush threat. It makes it a lot easier for teams be in the correct protections. There is no chaos on the opposite side of Wake that make teams be accountable for what another pass rusher would create. It makes the offense think quite a bit more if you have to think about pressure from both sides. This takes blockers away from the middle, freeing up the inside rushers, and giving them more man on man opportunities. IMO another pass rusher helps everyone from the inside lineman, to the corners, and safteys. Teams would at least have to prepare for pressure that isn't just schemed by blitzes, but by pressure created by your base..

DD......WE NEED TO GET OUT OF THE CELLAR ........

PATS.....345
GIANTS.. 6

GO BRADY

THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN THE PATS HIRED HIM AS HC ,THEN THE PATS WERE SOLD TO THE KRAFT FAMILY .........

ALoco | February 05, 2012 at 02:58 PM

The Pats hired Parcells in 93 under owner James Orthwein who sold the team to Kraft in 94 and Kraft put a FO in place and the whole thing finally exploded when Parcells referred to N.E. #1 pick Terry Glenn as a SHE in a 97 interview. He is the 1st and only HC to be fired after taking a team to the S.B.

It would be better to move, Aloco. I told you that.

Definitely...I have a copy....gives an insight into Parcells the Coach, the GM, and the personality that most fans have not seen...

....he admits he has faults, that he has made drafting mistakes, that a draft is a crap shoot...
...that he vowed after the Jets debacle never to be handcuffed by an owner again...

...his upbringing reared within him a fierce competitor who could not accept failure...

....and his entire career was predicated on a need to make money (no different than most of us terrestials)...

...it makes for good reading....and being a Giant fan in my younger days....I had motivation enough to buy it and read it....

...I think if you read it, you'd have a better appreciation for parcells the Coach, the football colleague, the person..

anyway, I enjoyed it.

A theory, by definition, is speculative and as such not based on hard facts. It is a guess. Perhaps a good one, but a guess nonetheless.

pete | February 05, 2012 at 02:59 PM

pete,

Touche and yes by definition you are correct Sir! My point is simply that given the facts we do have, the theory is probably solid when compared to the facts of all things transpired at hand.

FIN4LIFE..... IN BOSTON IT;S KNOWN THAT PARCELLS WAS NEVER FIRED ,,,,,HE WALKED AWAY AFTER THE LOSS OF THAT SUPER BOWEL ...HE'S THE ONLT FOOTBALL GUY HE WALKED AWAY AND STILL GOT HIS MONEY BASED ON HIS CONTRACT,......

PARCELLS IS A GREAT MAN AND DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE LOOKED AT THAT UGLY WAY OF THE LOW IQ FIN FANS .

In the Metaphysical(yes, I'm eccentric, that's me) it is a + sign for the Dolphins that Henne was hurt. It helped us quite a bit.

Anyone else notice that all of the coaches that left went to better situations.
And all of thier replacements have no experience in thier new roles with the exception of Sherman.
Philbin was never an HC before.
The DC was never a DC before.
And none of the other hires have any NFL experience.
Where is the all-star coaching staff that mando assured us was coming down the pike?
If you are an agent do you let your player sign here?
Peyton is not coming here to f uck up the twilight of his career.

anyway, I enjoyed it.

Buster | February 05, 2012 at 03:08 PM

I had as a lifelong UM fan the same appreciation for J.J. and gave his book a read, found the facts behind the man interesting as well. He admits sacrificing his 1st wife and relationships with children to his obsession with Football and being a Champion and talked of serious regrets, it's why when he remarried and walked away from Miami I wasn't terribly surprised, anyway thanks I'll give the Tuna's book a gander.

fin4life....Parcells addresses the SHE comment in the book......

.....it was NOT the reason he and the Pats parted ways...

...and it was not an issue with Terry Glenn by season's end...quite the contrary....

....I recommend you read the book...

Move the godamed Stadium, man, or at least the seats(and censor other Team's Fans to seat in them). Radical, uh? Like this new Program...

ALoco...you have instilled in me a new found respect..limited though it may be....LOL

PARCELLS IS THE ONLY HC IN FOOTBALL WHEN HE LEAVES A TEAM ,HE LEAVES AFTER MAKING THE OWNERS OF THAT TEAM RICHER ...JUST ASK THE PATS AND THE FINS AND GIANTS .........

PARCELLS IS A GREAT MAN AND DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE LOOKED AT THAT UGLY WAY OF THE LOW IQ FIN FANS .

ALoco | February 05, 2012 at 03:10 PM

Listen you'll excuse me but his relationship with Kraft couldn't have been more strained. I still remember before the Pats were announced in that S.B. and still in the tunnel the cameras were on Parcells and the big question was whether he would be back given his differences with ownership. He was pretty much forced out by an owner who had a difference of opinion with his way of doing things and believed in the structure of a FO.

Ask Jerry Jones if Parcells saved his franchise' bacon regarding saklary caps and financial sanity

FIN4LIFE...SO WHAT IF HIS RELATION WITH KRAFT WAS TOUGH TO DEAL WITH......MEN OF GREAT MIND ARE NEVER EASY TO DEAL WITH ......NOT LIKE THE LOW IQ FIN FANS ,,,,,,,THEY ALL MOUNT TO SOME PINE NUTS ,,,,,

cocoajoe @ 08:48 AM,

Hey bro, I think we are seeing eye to eye on this one for sure. The flesh lotto game of drafting and free agency is always going to be a hit and miss.

I am lock step with you on the fact that the old regime (and Ireland is still in the mix) was always late to the uptake on who had what skills.

Playing Porter on his last legs vs a young yet raw guy with huge upside like Wake. Letting guys like Nincovich, Steeler Safety Clark, Return specialist Stefan Logan get through their hands. Getting a known injury bug player like Smiley...surprise! He barely lasted.(BONK!) Letting Roth just walk for zero compensation. Not diagnosing much earlier that while Henne has a decent arm, he was never going to lead the team to any post season promise land.

cocoajoe, you nailed it asserting too many square peg round hole "try to make it fit" jobs. Not getting the players into the right roles even if they had some talent.

I will never forget this gem outta Ireland before last years draft "We have looked at the roster and...we need to add more team speed." Hello! McFly! Ya think??

After three years of the 1980's-90's Parcell's mantra of "You must be this tall, fat, heavy, and big boneded to ride this ride". If Ireland had eyes and ears he should have had the guts to tell Parcell's "Uh, this is a new era in the NFL. The rules favor offense and you can't touch people downfield... having some small, lightning fast guys with big heart that can catch is ok now".

I am preaching to the choir. Like you, I hope Philbin (First time, first year and all) has the nads to tell people in the Fins organization "NO!, this is the EXACT type of player that will work" and "NO! That type of player won't fit our new uptempo system".

Cheers, (Enjoy the SB)

fin4life....all true....and such is life...

....Parcells explains in his book that he felt handcuffed by his former owners...

...right or wrong, his thinking has been that if he is going to take the heat for losing, then he wants to be the one who makes the decisions that led to the losing, and accept the consequences...

...and it is no more than that, simply stated

PARCELLS IS A GREAT MAN AND DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE LOOKED AT THAT UGLY WAY OF THE LOW IQ FIN FANS .

ALoco | February 05, 2012 at 03:10 PM

Parcells would land in Dallas and override some decisions from his OC Sean Peyton complaining and forever coining, "that Peyton would start DRINKING THE KOOL AID and had a problem throwing the ball to much"

He finally walked when Jones forced T.O. down his throat were Parcells was probably right but took a bath on Peyton who in my book is one of the better young HC's today

...So I may be looked upon as a trader. I made the biggest bet I have ever made in my life yesterday. And I put it all on the Pats. funny thing is that I have been riding the Giants, and the money line throughout the playoffs. Right before I hit the wager button, I had a gut reaction, and changed my mind..This has nothing to do with my distaste(jealousy) of the Pats. I try to take emotion out of the eqaution when making a bet..We will see what happens.

THE NFL TODAY PLAY WITH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS B/C MEN LIKE PARCELLS BUILD IT UP..........

What about a Manning - Wayne reunion in Miami then taking Ingram with our #1 draft pick?

Again, right on fin4life...

...his mantra summed up as "My way or the highway"....

...and his resume allowed him to dictate those terms....

...J. Jones and Wayne knew that going in...and STILL hired him for what he brings to the table..

...and Ross was made plainly aware....

..i know it's a bitter pill , but it's the way things went down

FIN4LIFE.........PEYTON IS A CREDIT TO PARCELLS ..IT A PROVE HE'S A GREAT HC ........

Darryl.....someone told me the teaser was Giants with 9, and under 51....

...that sounds like the better bet to me.....

...what do you think?

...and it is no more than that, simply stated

Buster | February 05, 2012 at 03:22 PM

Buster,

When we started down this conversation it was about whether his heart was truly in the Miami job remember. If we would have acquired the Parcells that was in any of his other stops I would have had NO problem and this discussion would be mute. My point is and has been that he got an out from an owner that wanted to sell and took it and the money while never truly committing to his job in Miami.

FIN4LIFE.......YOU MAY BE UP TO SOME THING SMART HERE @ 3;26 PM......PARCELLS AND THE EX FIN OWNER RELEATION WAS A BUSINESS ONE BASED ON INTERESTS .........

Darryl,

I like the Giants because I believe this game will come down to the more rounded team. I believe the Giants that team because they have the D that can get the stops in this one but I wouldn't count Belichik or Brady out.

I don't forsee as someone mentioned earlier a runaway by either side. I think it will be more like the Giant Vs. Dallas game in Tex. Stadium week 13 in that we will see points and the team that keeps mistakes to a minimum will win.

My point is and has been that he got an out from an owner that wanted to sell and took it and the money while never truly committing to his job in Miami.

Posted by: fin4life | February 05, 2012 at 03:26 PM

What is this fantasy statement based on? Could it be he worked even harder than most VP of operations? Sure it could. It could be he did the VP and GM job together while tutoring ireland.

If he split early, hey...it was within his rights in the contract. Can't knock someone smart enough to negotiate a contract in their favor.

AFTER READING FIN4LIFE POST@ 3;26 PM,I DECLARE HIM NOT A LOW IQ FIN FAN,,,,,,,,,,,, HE'S A SMART FAN ...

..Buster. I know a guy that lives in the Reno area that actually does this for a living, and he reccomended teasing the spread with the over under(taking the under)..So I think you may be on the right track. Personally, I don't like teasers, or Parlays. I have been burned to many times. I like Money line bets, or staight up action. I did make a small wager on the over under TD passes for Brady today -2.5 I took the over... For what is worth. I lose more bets then I win, and do not usually wager the amount I did yesterday. My friend who I mentioned has been doing this a long time, and is one of the few that actually is smart enough to do it for a living...Hope this helps. Good luck.

GOOD POST CHIMES.......IF AN OWNER USED ME TO GET RICHER BY SELLING THE TEAM AFTER HIRING ME ,HE BETTER PAY ME SOMETHING,,,,,,,OTHER WISE I AM A DONKEY ,,,,,

Parcells came in to lay a foundation and leave. That is what he did. One can't say he never committed without any factual information to back it up. The bits of information I got from the press seemed to suggest he was watching tape 24 hours a day. JT said Parcells ignored him. Maybe Parcells was so busy working he didn't have time to pet JT? We don't know, that is my point.

This is the one thing wse disagree on..

....I think he entered the 2008 season draft with total commitment...

...he expected to tutor Ireland (who was in dallas player development)...and Tony S...who was his type guy with similar background(ex-lineman from Northeast small school, and success driven)...

....and the results of the first two drafts, QB mistakes (Henne and Pat White) notwithstanding, bear out that commitment..

...Parcells problem was never the football and the personal commitments required...

..his problem has been personality quirks...the need to control....the idea he doesn't owe explanation....the egocentric approach that says "I know I'm right, so take it or leave it"

..the early shortness of tolerence with laxidasical attitudes....the strive for perfection from himself, and the same requirement of aothers around him...

...but not once have I doubted his commitment to detail regarding the Dolphin drafts, the personnel decisions, the desire to help cut players be paced somewhere (so long as they gave full effort)....

...and that approach goes to the recommendation on rfex Ryan..

...Parcells has ALWAYS believed that success and winning is a result of planning and preparation...

...he believes he can beat you, even IF he helps you be better...

...it's arrogant for sure, but it's part of his make-up...

...and with Parcell's you either love him or hate him...

...sure he was abrassive as all get out, but he was good , he was always a winner, regardless of the help he had from assistants...he CHOSE the assistants...he made his rules..he lived by them, and he'll die defending them...

...some football men are winners...some are loswers...I count him among the former...

..that's just me

parcells is garbage, has been for quite some time now

Once again(although it may sound redundant or obvious(to some)), Parcells' greatest mistakes were the hiring of TS as HC and Henne as our potential franchise QB. How about that!

Fin 4 Life..I know. I think the Giants are the better team right now. In a sick sort of way, I hope they win(financially it may cost) I have been on their bandwagon since the start of the playoffs. I just had a wierd gut feeling that I could not ignore that told me to take N.E.... We will see.

Buster..again with a 9 point teaser you would be looking at a over under @ 60, and the G-men + 12.5...Seems like a no brainer right? What are the odds on a 100 bucks? Eddie B's teaser(I know sounds like the standard gamblers name) was 7 points with the Giants @ + 9.5 over under 61..So a little bit different..I think the under @ either is a pretty good bet. I think the under @ 54 is pretty good bet too..

Parcells hasn't been relevant since the '80's

Hey, wassup, dusty. Ready to watch who murders our National Anthem today?

..Alright fellas..Enjoy the game..I have a party to host..Stay safe, please do not drink and drive tonight..Call a cab, or a loved one. Hopefully everyone has a great day.

..his problem has been personality quirks...the need to control....the idea he doesn't owe explanation....the egocentric approach that says "I know I'm right, so take it or leave it"

This describes the personalities of others such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Highly successful people know that the KNOW better that most lost fools.

In fact, Parcells said of Belichek recently that "he is a guy that knows what he wants to do, makes a plan and does it, without caring what anyone else ever thinks"

Not an exact quote but that was basically it.

The Poossy is an enigma(less see).

Play it straight, People. Yes, Patriots or Giants. My advice.

over under is 53.5 and giants +3

Actually, Belichick is much more flexible in Football.

Parcells hasn't been relevant since the '80's

Sorry AMG....I think Jerry Jones and the Dallas organization would strongly disagree...

....you may recall that was 2003 to 2006

...Parcells turned around their record ....10-6 in the first season ..took them to the playoffs...

....he revamped their financial situation, bringing them into balance and freeing up salary cap money that allowed free agent sanity along with future player development through the draft....

recycled Drew Bledsoe, making Dallas competitive once again, while developing Tony Romo (a project deluxe), then inserted him when he was finally game ready, ending the QB merry-go-round that preceeded his hiring

...drafted Chris Canty, Demarcus Ware, Julius Jones, Jason Witten, and the list goes on..

.....wouldn't you say that was relevant beyond the 80's?....

...just sayin '
