The type of QB Mike Sherman looks for

General Manager Jeff Ireland knows the quarterback search this offseason is the thing. He knows it's important. And he's eyebrows deep in working the problem.

He's so fired up about the issue, he's told coach Joe Philbin and his assistants and scouts not to breathe a word about Miami's plans, although everyone knows owner Stephen Ross has already identified Peyton Manning as his target if/when he becomes available.

But outside of names, what are the Dolphins looking for to drive their incoming West Coast offense?

"You like to have a guy that will let the system work for him instead of [him working for the system] -- go through his progressions," offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said this week.

Believe it or not, the first thing Sherman looks at when searching for a successful quarterback is not the arm. It's the feet.

"I like to start with feet," he said. "I want to have a guy that has good feet. If you have good feet, you have balance at the top of your route. You're in good throwing position. I always start from the feet up on quarterbacks because we're going to do a fair amount under center as well as in the shotgun on quarterbacks.

"The timing and the rhythm of the play is so important. In the West Coast offense, tempo and rhythm is very important -- one, two, three. One, two, three. We time the drops. With [Brett] Favre for six years we timed his drops to see where he is in his time from point A to point B."

OK so feet is a big deal. What else?

"Other things in the West Coast offense is you like ot have a quarterback who is able to make a good decision, have a quick release, get the ball out as he goes through his progression."

So if you're judging the QBs available in free agency, the draft and through trade, judge the things Sherman is judging.

EXPLAIN WHY THIS STATEMENT OF YOURS IS TRUE AND NOT JUST SOME SPECULATIVE GARBAGE.

All your mock drafts, consensus and rankings are nothing but PURE speculative garbage.

Leaf, Erickson, Ware, Akili Smith, George, etc, etc.

If you want to discuss specifics on how Tannehill should really be ranked, no problem.

In 4 years of competeing for a starting job in college, he couldn't beat out any of the competition. He didn't even make back up until his senior season.

The guys that he couldn't beat out, the guys that kept THIRD on the depth chart, those guys weren't even drafted. They sucked and Tannehill couldn't even get off of the third string.

The fact that Tannehill is ranked as the 3rd QB this year speaks more to how weak this class is as opposed to good he really isn't.

Landry, Barkley and the other kid would have easily bumped back to arounf 8 to 10 range had they not opted to stay. Weeden as well were in not for his age and should anyways. In my worthless opinion, Cousins is better too.

You call it speculative garbage all you want. I gave you some very viable reasons for how I rank Tannehill.

Looks like dusty bottoms forgot to change his log-in name.

dont tell me fins that u want manning, please dont. the novice fan will want him, sad to say

OK gents..

I need to take a nap for tonights NFL Network show on the ''Top 10 Worst Free Agent Signings'' - They're called Free Agents. But they aren't free. A countdown of the biggest free agency busts in NFL history.

Why are your appraisals NOT speculation when all others are?

First you say I can't speak for Dusty and then you put words in my mouth. Get serious. I even said you could call my opinions speculative garbage. In essence, that's all any of our opinions are. Albeit not a polite way to put it, but it is what it is.

I offered my speculative garbage, but I also included a number of specifics, reasons and facts to support my conclusions.

Any questions?

nyg u know larry brown will be high on the list

fin4life we better hope he likes a loud packed stadium and not ours. our franchise will be offcially dead if we make the mistake of signing career over manning

dusty bottoms | February 19, 2012 at 04:17 PM

dusty,

You know I put up alot of posts jumping all over this bandwagon but I saw on NFL Net something I believe others should Youtube at the very least before going all GUNG HO on Manning. He gave a workout at Duke University and couldn't throw across his body and even worse couldn't throw an out, it was sad!! After NFL Net. had a Doctor on the set that says there is a REAL danger his recovery has plateau'd

If this is true there is NO WAY you can bank on him as your 2012 starter while living in any realistic World, I feel for him because he's been a classy Pro and is getting treated horribly by Irsay. I hate to admit it but it looks like it might be over for him and like alot of punch drunk boxers is the last to realize it!!

Youtube his Duke Univ. workout.

Ok, so I get raked over the coals because I mentioned Tannehill. Maybe you should know that NFLDraftScout.com ranks him as the 3rd best QB in the draft. And, the 11th overall best player available. Who's the 4th best QB? Bruce Osweiler, Arizona State, 6'7" 240 lbs., who runs a 4.83 forty time. Ranked 45th overall. Would you rather have him?

Even if I was Dusty(which I'm not)why would it matter?

I'm not calling names or trolling. I'm giving you facts and well though out opinions.

So, because I corrected you, educated you and defeated your arguments you're going to accuse me of being Dusty?

Back to my first question, why would it matter, I'm telling it like it is.

BTW-How did you like my reply about Tannehill NOT being a WR originally?

yes fin ive seen it, like ive said before, his career is over

Out To Lunch = dusty bottoms

ranked 4th is weeden because of his age, foles is 5th

Didn't mean to come off too strong. Inquiring mind was being aggravating. My bad.

I don't know or I haven't watched enough Osweiler to have a solid opinion. From what I think at this point, I wouldn't take him over Tannehill.

With Tannehill I just think he's to big of project for our current situation. I think he'll be to highly priced(draft pick)for us to take a 3 to 4 year chance on. We need to find somebody that can come in and compete a lot quicker. That's all I'm saying.

ARTICLE ON MANNING DUKE WORK OUT

Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been working out at Duke this week, an athletic department spokesman said Thursday. The cover was blown earlier Thursday when Matt Skura, a Duke football player, wrote on Twitter that he was "stretching" next to Manning. The post was later taken down.

The connection between Manning and Duke is Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe. He was an assistant coach at Tennessee when Manning played there. He was head coach at Mississippi when Eli Manning played there.Manning told The Indianapolis Star's Mike Chappell after the Super Bowl that he might move around the country during his rehabilitation so he can throw to "familiar receivers."

"I want to go home, too," Manning said. "We haven't been to New Orleans yet."

Meanwhile, reports on Manning's progress continue to emerge.

On a podcast on the website Grantland, Bill Simmons talked with the NFL Network's Mike Lombardi. Lombardi reported that Manning isn't close to his old form after three neck surgeries."He can't throw the ball," Lombardi said. "I've talked to people who've caught the ball for him. He can't throw the ball to his left. He can't throw the ball across his body, because he doesn't feel it. People that catch the ball for him say he doesn't really have velocity on the ball yet."

Former Colts vice chairman Bill Polian on Thursday called such reports "untrue," speaking on Sirius XM NFL Radio Wednesday. Polian says he saw Manning throw on New Year's Eve with "quick release, good zip" under 25 yards.

Doctors have said for months that Manning nerves must regenerate before he will be back to full strength. They have said no one can predict when that will happen.

With Tannehill ranked 3rd, the drop off after the BIG-2 is HUGE!!

Out to Lunch, sorry wasn't me calling you Dusty. Too many trolls on here...as usual. (one of the reasons I stopped posting on here about mid-season).

Anyways, I understand about the WR thing. He converted to WR because he wanted to play. Shows he has feet. (isn't that one of the things the new coach said he was looking for?). But, it's also why his numbers weren't great in college and he struggled. That's also why he needs to sit the bench for a while. But, on some polls, he's ranked high. (see my previous post). And, Sherman knows what the kid can do. We'll see. Just don't count him out. He's on the radar! Besides, if we take Flynn, and keep Moore, the kid doesn't have to come out of the gate swinging.

And, the Bleacher Report has a nice little write-up on how Tannehill would fit perfectly in the Bills scheme. Maybe the "Pat White" effect won't go into effect. You know, take a player just to keep a division rival from taking him. Maybe. Then again...maybe not. We shall see in April, huh?

if miami signs flynn they wont take a qb until say 4th oir 5th, someone like kellen moore

Could be. I like that kid too. Just saying that it wouldn't surprise me in the least if both our HC and OC both get the QB's that they're familiar with. So, there's a good possibility that you may see both Flynn and Tannehill in the Fin's training camp.

It's not so much Tannehill for me as it the pick it will take to get him.

I don't want to use a first or a second on a project as shaky as Tannehill.

I like Dustys scenario. Get a guy to compete with Moore. Get playmakers in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Then a guy like Cousins would be a steal in the 3rd.

Neither is an upgrade to Moore. YAWN!

True. But, QB is our most glaring weakness. And, Sparano lost his job because he didn't address the issue. That's why I put forth the "double-down" on QB's that they're familiar with. Just putting it out there as a likely scenario.

I don't see Manning coming here. He may restructure and stay in Indy. Or, go for one last guaranteed payday in hopes that he can still play. That makes the most sense. And, unless Ross talks them into it, I don't see out HC and GM buying in to it. We're gonna be on the edge of our cap as it is. Too many other holes to plug just to blow it all on Peyton. That is IF he can still play and IF he gets released. Lot's of "IF'S".

Sorry, the only advantage that Moore has over Flynn is playing time. Both are "journeymen" QB's that COULD have an upside, or COULD be only back-up material. When given a chance, Flynn seemed to step up his game. Moore stepped up too, but struggled more in my opinion. That's why I'd put both of them together and let them compete. Which is something we were promised under Sparano, but never got. One of them will be a starter in this league, but which one? Sounds like another "flip-a-coin" decision to me. And, we had enough of that when The Tuna was here!

It's time you so called Dolphin Fans appreciate what you have and quit crying we need a QB. I am sure everyone in Los Angeles would love to have the Dolphins just the way they are. Try not having a Team then you would have a reason to be Crying. Try being TRUE FANS like in OAKLAND who stands behind their Team Win or Lose. If you want to have your way buy your own Team and see how things pan out otherwise quit crying.

Darryl. I couldnt agree more. But I also think another option in the draft would ne Kellon Moore. Sure, he doesnt have prototypical size, but niether does Drew Brees, ansd Kellon is only a HALF INCH SHORTER. They say he doesnt have the arm strength. That was said about Joe Montana, and Tom Brady. What Kellon has done, is win. He also has a very high competion percentage, which would be great for the west coast offense. I wouldnt mind signing Flynn, and drafting Kellon Moore. He will probably still be there in 3rd round.

Love this plan right here. Get blackmon if can (that guy from ND his name evades me at the moment). I wouldn't mind a flier on TY hilton from FIU returner and a fast quick WR that would be great in a west coast system. The rest of the draft should be pass rushers and lineman maybe a DB or Safety as well that can develop into a starter

**************************************************
****The Odinsider's State Of The Union Address****
**************************************************

Matt Moore is my worst case scenario and I'm fine with it.

He finished out 6-3! Get him one more Offensive Lineman, another Recieving threat, a full off season/training camp and get the fvck outta the way!

Add a pass rush threat opposite Wake and our Defense is awesome, secondary and all. OK, maybe not awesome, but this one move gives us a Killer D-line and improves our secondary tremendously.

I think Philbin and Sherman are thinking Clyde Gates all the way when talking hidden talents. Gates will improve his route running on his own. Philbin and Sherman will scheme him into being a bonafide threat opposite Marshall. This should have happened last year, but who cares. Full Spead Ahead.

If we add a legit Corner and or safety, get outta here! Allen's another year older and Jimmy Wilson unfortunately is just too small to play safety in the NFL. Wilson is another guy I think is a hidden talent. Philbin and Coyle will know how to exploit his talents. Wilson should be starting opposite Davis with Smith at nickle(on TE's). Thus making Allen expendable(possibly a depth guy).

I'm more worried about finding a true Ball Hawking Free Safety than possibly replacing Bell. If Bell won't restructure, it could be bye-bye. At this point in his career, I could see Jones or Clemons taking over without much, if any drop off. Find a Ball Hawk Free Safety and a Pass Rusher and it's lights out for our opponents offenses! PERIOD! Add starters at these two spots and suddenly we have depth all over the place.

Clay is another who I suspect they consider a hidden talent. The guy obviously showed he has it last season. The scheme just didn't fit or EXPLOIT his talents. This kind of crap ain't happening anymore under Philbin and Sherman. SpOrano and Hennings were so over matched and outwitted the past years it was fcvking sickening! No more baby! I see Philbin bringing in Finley to pair up with Clay. Fasano will add the depth and allow us to jettison the rest of the worthless Parcells/SpOrano prototype(dinosaurs) underacheiving TE's.

Matt Moore is my worst case scenario. We got the horses and the receivers. Now we got a new Sheriff in town and his deputy knows how to form fit a scheme! Get us 1 or 2 more legitimate offensive lineman and get the fvck out of the way!

ValHalla!!!!

I wish the Dolphins would move to L.A. and stop embarrasing S Fla. A move to the Arena league would serve them well also.

Has Ireland been fired yet?

Read Omar's article today (sorry Armando). Sherman endorsing Tannehill.
Same kid that couldn't beat out QB's for the job and became a receiver.
Same QB that couldn't win enough games to keep his head coach's job.
Omar said basically the same thing. Usually hate Omar's opinions, but we agree here. Sorry, again Armando.
Seeing the writing on the wall fans ... be ready for the big burst of air being release from the balloon of hope in our next drafted "star" QB.
We're so screwed.
Again.

Odin, great State of the Union address! You forgot to say that Sherman and Philbin, unlike Sparano, can speak in understandable English!

Peyton at this point is a waste of time. Lets move forward not backward. If you can get the Packers guy fine, if not go with what we have and draft a QB in 2nd or 3rd round. Get the big WR or another OL in the first round. Then another RB because Bush is not going to get it done for us. We also need a good TE that can catch the ball and be another target for the offense.

Hmmm....

Out To Lunch and dusty bottoms both quit posting at the same time.

Hmmm....

Didn't Tannehill get Sherman fired?

After watching the RG3 interview on Sports center, this franchise would be out of its stupid mind if we dont trade up. We are talking beauty and brains. Lol. He is RARE. They dont come around often. He fires the ball better than Luck, which is why he won all the awards. People are not blind!
Ireland, this is your only shot to draft a potential Hall of Famer from your alma matta. U have no excuse!

i can guess what Ireland/Jeff plan is, sign Manning and draft Qb Tannehill to groom behind him because this QB if you wait 2 to 3 years on him, he can be good. IMO, if we can't get Mario Williams in free agency, get elite WR DeSean Jackson (if he is not tagged). He really fits our needs. you need two great receivers to be a great team.

Dear Mr.chemtrail night watcher

Just sing to yourself this Don Mclean song Vincent/Chemtrails

Scarry, scarry night
Chemtrail palettes blue and gray
Look out on a Chemtrail day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Chemtrails on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the chemtrail linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your insanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Scarry, scarry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling chemtrails in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Chemtrails changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's chemtrails hand

For they could not kill you
But still, your chemtrail stories were true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that scarry, scarry night
You took your life as chemtrailed people often do
But I could've told you, Chemtrail night watcher
This world was never meant
For one as truthful as you

Scarry, Scarry night
chemtrails hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the chemtrails and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met
The black ops men in black ops clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the chemtrail snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your insanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

As far as RGIII I'm not a big fan of black QB's. How many have won a SB? And we had Lucas, Lemon, Culpepper and White all losers.

Yes - Socialism is evil.

I doubt that we have a shot at RGIII. He's a talent and it would cost way to much to move up to get him considering the holes that we still have!

And, for those of you clamoring for Ross to move the Dolphins to Los Angeles, are you crazy? Every team that has gone to LA, left after a few years! The largest NFL market won't support a local team. Ask the Raiders or the Rams. The Fins, for better or worse, need to stay in Miami. Any place else just wouldn't feel right and is a stupid suggestion. Of course, if you're a Jets fan it might make sense. (They tend to make sense out of things that defy others logic).

Provided this team gets on track with the new schemes (and buys into the new coaching staff's methods), I really do think the Fins will make a run at the play-offs. The Bills aren't that good, yet. The Jets are in disarray. And, Brady's weaknesses have been exposed. We're a young team that got off to a slow start due to the strike and an incompetent coach.
