Dolphins don't seem done at quarterback

Back to football ...

The Dolphins' search for a franchise quarterback has to take a different road now. This team will not find that guy in free agency. This team probably won't find that guy in a trade because it's not likely Aaron Rodgers, Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger or Tom Brady will be on the market anytime soon.

So the only avenue that offers a glimmer of hope for Dolphins fans clamoring for a franchise QB is the draft.

During my 30-minute conversation with general manager Jeff Ireland on Tuesday, I asked him about Miami's chances of selecting a quarterback in the draft. Let's face it, the club needs one more guy behind Matt Moore and David Garrard and that guy will probably be a youngster or a developmental type.

Ireland paused after my question, no doubt weighing whether to answer. (He doesn't like to give anything away, not even in hints). And then he said:

"There's a chance of that. Let it run its course."

Not a yes, I grant you. But neither is it a no.

So let us assume the Dolphins do go for a quarterback somewhere in the draft. It's an assumption several NFL types and NFL observers are making. Former Redskins and Houston Texans GM Charley Casserly, for example, released his most recent mock draft today and he has the Dolphins picking Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill in the first round.

I like Tannehill. What's not to like. He was productive for Mike Sherman, his head coach at A&M and now the Dolphins offensive coordinator. At 6-4 and 221 pounds, he has prototypical size. He has a good arm. He was accurate enough last season. And while his decision-making could probably improve, thus bringing down his interceptions, he is not terrible there, either.

The problem with Tannehill is he's considered the next best quarterback after Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. And that means he'll be overdrafted -- meaning he'll probably go higher than his actual grade because he's a quarterback and there aren't enough great ones of those in the NFL. I would be comfortable using a second round pick on Tannehill, probably even an early second-round pick on him.

But a first? At No. 8 overall where the Dolphins draft?

That, in my opinion, is not a value pick. He is not the eighth-best player coming out.

Yet, that is probably what it will take to select Tannehill. It will present the Dolphins with a dilemma because on the one hand, they need a quarterback. But on the other hand, they don't like to overpay for anyone, including a quarterback.

Should the Dolphins decide to explore the quarterback position later in the draft, I'd love for them to look at Brandon Weeden with one of their two third-round picks. This guy also has prototype size at 6-4 and 221 and has perhaps the best arm in the draft.

No one was more productive than him. No one throws the ball better than him.

The problems with Weeden are he's going to be 29 years old, which means his shelf life is cut by nearly five years. Other issues are he's careless with the football at times, and he's sometimes kind of confident in his abilities to the border of being overconfident. The NFL will humble him and that isn't a worry, but how long it takes him to figure out he's not in Kansas (or Oklahoma State) anymore concerns because, again, he's 29 years old.

Brock Osweiler, at 6-7 and 242 pounds impresses a lot of people. I look at him and see Dan McGwire. With respect to McGwire, that scares me.

As a later round pick I like Kirk Cousins. He reminds me, don't laugh, of Tom Brady. He's tall and lanky like Brady was coming out of college. He played in the Big 10 like Brady did. He was very good but not great at Michigan State just like Brady was at Michigan.

Even their statistics are something of a mirror for one another.

Brady threw for 2,586 yards with 20 TDs and 6 INTs his senior season at Michigan. He completed 62.8 percent of his passes. Cousins threw for 3,316 yards with 25 TDs and 10 INTs last season for Michigan State. He completed 63.7 percent of his passes.

I like him. I really do. He's a winner and he brought his team from behind on several occasions. Is he a first or second-round pick? Probably not. But I like him.

This, by the way, is not meant to be a complete study on every single quarterback coming out in the draft. I'm not ready to do that yet. This is meant for you to keep your eyes open to the idea that the Dolphins are not done adding QBs.

There is a vacancy for a young guy.

we are too dysfunctional for peyton manning. he wouldnt come to davie to see ireland;we had no chance.

Now that Tebow is with the JESTS maybe Home will go away. Im sure you could find a nice NYJ message board iin which to play.
Funny how the medis is giving Sporano credit for the wildcat...funny how they media doesn't know ANYTHING and kind of forgot their job is to report not make rap up.
Tebow to the Jests + Tebow not to Miami, which is a win for us.

In a positive light, Weeden is really only 22 to 23 in football years.

He wasn't taking any beating during the 4 to 5 years that he was playing baseball.

The WC equires accuracy which he supposedly has.

He could be the next Kurt Warner minus the grocery bagboy experience.

THE ONLY WAY IRELAND CAN REDEEM HIMSELF...... is if he can pull an okey doke and trade for DREW BREES,

1)Saints faced with all that bounty violations,
2) i hear brees negotiating contract has not gone far
3) Reggie Bush ties in Miami,

I know this will not happen, so Ireland should be toast during this year!

Home,

My mother is black, so what!

Explains your extreme narcissism. You feel intense sense of loss of entitlement! LOL

Home can't go he is a Jets fan. And I am not sticking around New Orleans for a while. South Beach vaation time here I come. Oh I have plenty of money from riding the Brees train. Charter anyone?

Matt Moore for Miami Dolphins MVP this year!

This fukk thinks we are fools down here. So Home and all his other aliases....

no to tannehill at 8. either trade out for more picks, or get coples or ingram.Just don't walk away without tannehill/cousins/osweiler/weeden. if that happens ireland's ass is grass.with some extra picks,a need for a QB,and a lynch mob outside his windowless office can he be that clueless?

Lets get Sanchez.

Hey...does it occur to anyone that Fischer's DC was just suspended indefinitely?

doh!

RAMS defensive coordinator Greg Williams suspened indefinetly....

Still want Fisher to steer this ship......All-star STAFF my @ss......

AGREED! Bad move for Miami to reach for Tannehill at #8. I would be VERY happy if the Dolphins drafted Kirk Cousins. I'm not too confident of him making it past the 2nd round though. In OTHER news...the Jets just totally made the Fins lackluster offseason worthwhile by signing...wait for it...Tebow!! AHAHAHAHA.

Tebow won his games and beat the Steelers in the Playoffs!

Henne & Tebow on the stinky fish went 0-7!

Go Tebow!

Go Jets!

It's definitely Tannehill if he is still there at #8. If not, wait til round 3 or 4 and get Cousins. If Philbin decided that Flynn might not beat out Moore, then I'll be happy with him starting and a rookie sitting and learning for a year.

Mando, you pay a premium for QB's. Plain & Simple. You either over pay or you reach in the draft.

Look at last years draft. Ponder? Gabbert? Locker? All went ridiculously high compared to where they were rated. Did they worry about value or did they worry about trying to find their qb? Losers talk about value!

If you consider how critical QB's are in todays NFL, there is no such thing as good value for a QB. They're all valuable! Backups are making 3-5 million per year!

If you don't pay, you won't be playing meaningful games. You either pay up the wazoo to get one or you watch playoff games instead of playing them.

ALERT...

TEBOW TO THE JETS

HOME PLEASE COME HOME!

Russell Wilson of Wisconsin would look very good in aqua. He's waaaaaaaaaay better than that Spartan dog, Cousins.

Why pick a defensive player at 8the who makes maybe one or two plays a game when a first round qb is staring you right in the face who makes 30 plays a game?

I swear, some of you are exactly like what you accuse Ireland of. You want to blow tour premium assets on supporting cast players and then try to find some diamond in the rough to play qb.

Tannehill is rated higher than Flacco and josh freeman were in their years. The right pick is obvious.

@Kris,

does that mean I can't blog until you tell me so?

like minds...

WE MISS YOU HOME. PLEASE COMEBACK HOME!

Home your points are retarded especially when 80% of the workforce is black you frikin nitwit.
Pretty Please STFU.

Armando, we had enough of this Sweet Home fellow, send him home. Also, think Tebow can clean up Rex Ryan and his behavior?

here's wild idea...Payton suspended for a year, they lost draft picks, how bout throwing a bunch a picks at the saints for Brees

oh and thank god we didnt get tebow

Mando, I'm still interested in these Ireland rumors. Now nfl.com has an article up about Flynn saying Seattle is run by "the right kind of people." And there were rumors there about an unnamed player saying no one likes even speaking to Ireland (I assume on the Dolphins).

So I wish you could investigate this further with OUR players. Think they would open up to you (if you allowed them to remain anonymous)? Just to see what they think of Ireland. Not the ex-players (OBVIOUSLY they wouldn't like him). But players currently on the team (say a Bess, Hartline, Dansby, Vontae, Smith, etc.). I wonder how they feel.

Reason is, you don't really hear about these problems in winning franchises. Those organizations tend to run a lot smoother (with the GM, HC and players all on the same page). If people are butting heads on our team, that leads to disunity and a complete breakdown of the team. It's hard to win in that environment.

Gonna buy 2 TEBOW JETS jerseys

Go Jets!!!

Back to the division playoffs for the 3rd time in 4 years!

Maybe Reggie Bush can throw passes for the fish lol or run up the middle again 6-10 lol

HOME WE ALREADY OWN YOUR SOUL. SOUL BROTHER.

HOME PLEASE COME HOME. WE LOVE YOU HOME!

Signing Garrard was exactly in preparation for 'over-drafting'. Are we going to whine about 'value' too, now? We need a QB so we'll get the best one. End of story!

WHAT NEUROTIC BABIES!

thanks aloco for breaking the news about the jets and tebow.

"The problem with Tannehill is he's considered the next best quarterback after Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. And that means he'll be overdrafted -- meaning he'll probably go higher than his actual grade because he's a quarterback and there aren't enough great ones of those in the NFL".

Exactly. And the reason is there's a HUGE drop off after Luck & RG. And I agree about Cousins. But don't stop there, keep looking next year and the next until we get it right. And even then keep an eye out for the next QB. That's the Ron Wolfe philosophy which I like. Look at NE, they drafted Mallett last year. They have Brady but they know a) he could get hurt & b) he won't last forever.

But hell, I'm dreaming now Ireland's still here.

HOME, LETS PLEASE NOT SEND OUR RELATIONSHIP INTO FORECLOSURE. HOME PLEASE COME HOME AND WE MEAN NOW!

Personally I don't see why the players would give a crap about the GMs personality or if they like to talk to him. This seems off to me.

Jets will still suck, even with tebow. They are a joke and overrated. The fans will turn on Dirty sanchez as soon as he throws his fisrt of many picks this year.

mark

i am no expert, but from the clips i've seen, the draft previews i've read, and the games i watched the 4 guys seem very close.tannehill is a nice looking prospect and he has the edge in system knowledge, but if we can trade down between 9-21 where none of the teams need to take a qb i pull the trigger, get the extra picks and leave it to fate.

Home,

The Patriots DO run a version of the West Coast Offense! They've just modified it so much that it doesn't resemble the normal WCO. Especially in adding lots of two and three Tight-End sets. But, there's still check downs to the RB and they use Welker in the slot a lot. It's their version, but still a WCO.

Just saying...

Go Fish!

4-12 !

Fire the racist Jeff Ireland!

Question: Do you overdraft to get someone today or do you have the patience and courage to go another year with who you have and see what happens with Barkley and Landry Jones. Mat Moore was 6-3, and at the end of the year most analysts said the dolphins were a team no one wanted to play. If Matt Moore starts last season there is a good chance they make the playoffs.

New Blog Up

Now that the New Orleans season is over, how about a trade for Drew Brees?

If Philbin & Sherman WANT Tannehill, and he's their guy, go ahead and draft him at #8!!!
I'd be okay with that. But, they're seeing something that I'm not seeing. I'm afraid the kid's going to be a bust in the NFL. He seems timid and confused at times and locks onto his receivers with his eyes. Maybe they can coach some of that out of him.

I like Cousins better! I think he may have a better upside. He's more of a gunslinger type. Smart, willing to take chances, more coachable, in my opinion.

I would even understand taking Osweiller. He's definitely a project, though. Needs to sit for a year or two. It might take that long for him to grasp a WCO and the faster pace of the NFL.

Something bothers me about Weeden. And, it's not his age! I can't quite put my finger on it.

If the Dolphins would have gotten Jeff Fisher, guess whose DEF coordinator would be getting suspended today?

MIAMI!!

We need weedon, bottom line, he is way better than znyone BESIDE RG3....WE NEED A WIDE RECEIVER 1ST RD...WALLACE...WEEDEN IN THE TIRD, RT IN THE 2ND.....LIKE HELLO PEOPLE

Mando: Casserley agreed that Tannehill is not worth a top 10 draft pick. But he loves the kid

Weendon 2nd or 3rd and get balckmon and trade up for that boy

Imagine weeden & blackmon shinnin in miami like they did in college :) go dolphins

Brees to Miami!!

Just the thought of it.
Ross would roll out the Brinks truck for that!

Perhaps Ireland should still look into the Mike Wallace possibility? The guy is a proven number 1 and getting better!

Just the other day you guys were saying its a crap shoot on who you draft. So does it really matter who we draft at #8? Either he is good or he is not good.

But if we think Moore and Garrard are not the answer then now is the time to draft Tannehill. He's the best coming out in the next few years behind Luck and RGIII. Garrard is on a one year contract. Unless he starts and does well, I don't see him on the team next year. He will play to drive up his trade value but I don't see him on this team next year. So we are going to need a QB in this draft. Might as well get Tannehill if he's there.

You know everyone will want Rodgers brother next year.

Matter of fact, I almost certainly would draft Tannehill if he is there at #8. I would have a 3 way QB competition. All the way up to the start of the regular season.

Armando, if Dolphins wait until after Round 1 it is likely they will not Tannehill. Weeden will not last until Round 3. And Cousins will be gone in Round 2 or 3. I can see Dolphins sliding down and taking Tannehill but they cannot slide past Cleveland.

Ignore the Jests fans, this is their time of year, after all. Best team in the NFL between Feb. & Sept.

Shoot me if the Dolphins draft a QB at 8 it will re-inforce they are odiots and do not know what they are doing.

This is from WQAM's Sid Rosenburg:

I'm often asked what Ross' infatuation with Jeff Ireland is? Where it was born and why it seemingly still exists? My answer always goes back to the faith and confidence Steve Ross had in Bill Parcells. Even though Parcells, like the Italian captain, jumped off the boat before it sank there seems to be some residual respect. Parcells is a legendary figure, an eventual Hall of Famer, that only failed in one place. And that was here in Miami. And along with the 3 consecutive losing seasons, Jeff Ireland is a constant reminder of that failure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On my Tuesday show, former New York Giant wide receiver Amani Toomer stopped by to talk about Jeremy Shockey, Manning and the out-of-town perception of the Miami Dolphins. I asked Toomer what he knew or heard about Ireland. He admitted he didn't know anything about Ireland's philosophies, daily practices, or football acumen. But he was quick to recite the story about Ireland asking Dez Bryant if his mother was, in fact, a prostitute. That little ditty, according to Toomer, is something people will always remember Ireland for and he deems that more embarrassing than any subsequent Dez Bryant answer.

Former Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder has become a very good friend of mine since he announced his retirement on my show last year. He describes Ireland as cold with very little to no people skills. And without outing every current and/or former Dolphins player I can tell you his opinion of Ireland represents the majority. I can't wait to hear what Yeremiah Bell says next.

If you're wondering what the media thinks of Ireland, it's not a heck of a lot different than his players. Omar Kelly and Ben Volin try to point out positives about Ireland, and all it does is make me and my listeners angrier.

Jeff Ireland has been part of the chain of command for three years and yet the only Ireland that ever called my show was his wife defending her husband. If there was a plan for the Miami Dolphins moving forward, why not give WQAM's listeners a chance to hear it?

Instead Ireland adopted Bill's old philosophy and hides behind the closed office doors in Davie as his football team loses and fan base dwindles.

CBS analyst Phil Simms said on my show Tuesday that Dolphin fans need to be patient during this rebuilding process. I reminded Phil this "process" is now a decade old. It's not fair to ask any fan to be that patient, especially in a town where the home team was as rich in tradition and as proud as any franchise in NFL history. My fear is that's all gone now.

So while Jeff Ireland speaks to the contrary, it's clear that big time players and coaches don't want to be here. Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher, Peyton Manning, and Matt Flynn are just a few examples. And while our other franchises are generating enthusiasm and excitement, the Miami Dolphins are dying a slow and painful death. And at the forefront of this dismal disaster is Jeff Ireland.

Let me repeat Sid's last statement:
"And while our other franchises are generating enthusiasm and excitement, the Miami Dolphins are dying a slow and painful death. And at the forefront of this dismal disaster is Jeff Ireland".

The problem is that every quarterback will go earlier than their draft grade. That is just how it goes because they are so valuable. Get em when you can, if you can and if you really like em. No matter what you are going to be overpaying.
