Breakdown of factors that could sway Manning

Peyton Manning has been officially released by the Indianapolis Colts today. He can sign with another team as early as 4:01 p.m. Thursday or when the transaction hits the NFL wire.

So where is he actually going?

Well, the offshore gaming parlors have established the Dolphins as 2-1 favorites to land the former Pro Bowl and future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Washington, Arizona, Seattle, the Jets, and Chiefs are among the other teams expected to chase Manning to some degree.

But what team will be most attractive to Manning?

First, let me tell you what I have been told by a league source. Manning is not a big fan of playing in cold, crappy weather if he can help it. All things being equal, he'd rather play in a warm climate or domed home stadium. No, the climate thing is not a deal-breaker, I'm told, but it is important because even Manning and his "people" recognize he's had much greater success in good weather or indoor games throughout his career.

That suggests the Chiefs, Seattle and Jets will have to deal with something of a disadvantage as they all play home games in outdoor stadiums where it can get treacherous late int he season.

Next, people close to Manning, those who worked with him for years are not buying the idea of Manning going to the Washington Redskins. On this former Colts general manager Bill Polian and former Colts coach Tony Dungy agree and the reason is simple:

Manning doesn't like the idea of facing his brother Eli twice a year.

"I think it would be tough for him to be in the NFC East and play twice a year and potentially knock Eli out of the playoffs," Dungy said on ESPN today. "I don't think he would want to be in direct competition with Eli and the New York Giants."

Polian added that every time Peyton played Eli in the past it "wore on him." Polian pretty much eliminated the Redskins. So there's that.

I've also been told that while it is not a prerequisite of his signing, Manning would probably like adding players that he's comfortable with. The most obvious of these is his go-to receiver Reggie Wayne, who is an unrestricted free agent.

Wayne, who played for the University of Miami, would seem like a natural addition with the Dolphins if Manning really, truly wants the security of having a familiar receiver. Speaking of receivers, I can tell you that Miami alpha receiver Brandon Marshall greatly approves of the idea of adding Manning.

I talked to Marshall a couple of weeks ago and he spoke of spending some time at an endorsement event with Manning during Super Bowl week. No, it wasn't a full-on recruiting moment by Marshall, but he told me the idea of adding Manning was one he welcomed.

Marshall, however, was not the only big-time receiver to spend some time with Manning during Super Bowl week. Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald similarly spent time with Manning. The Cardinals invested heavily in Kevin Kolb last season. They gave him a big contract that included a $10 million signing bonus and they traded away Dominque Rogers-Cromartie to the Eagles for Kolb.

But Kolb's status in Arizona is tenuous because he didn't have a great 2011 season and he has a $7 million option bonus due March 17. The Cardinals could easily decline the option and shift their focus onto Manning.

My educated guess is Arizona presents the greatest threat to the Dolphins as both teams try to lure Manning. Arizona plays in a retractable roof stadium. The talent is more or less on par with the Dolphins and, in fact, the Cardinals can argue their 8-8 record last season suggests they're better than Miami.

The Dolphins have the edge that Manning already has a condo in South Florida so he likes it here. As was reported first here, Manning was working out in South Florida while the rest of the NFL was chasing him all over Indianapolis during the combine.

That's the lay of the land. The NFL wire's release will signal the start of the chase.

"the Cardinals can argue their 8-8 record last season suggests they're better than Miami."

They can argue that until they are blue in the face but one look at the two divisions and schedules from last year will tell an educated football fan all he/she needs to know.

Dont be heart broken if he signs with arizona. Or any other team for that matter. If that is to happenit means its three strikes for ross and this business is just to big for him, so he need to sell the team and go back to ny.

Flynn is definitely not the answer. I seriously question is arm strength. Reminds me when Jason Garrett had a couple of big games for Dallas.

This will be the 18th QB Miami has had since marino, Number 18 come on down buddy..

fin4,

If the Dolphins sign Peyton you can totally forget about Jake Long being traded for anything. You have got to be kidding! LOL

You need tom read what I wrote a little more carefully.

I believe Manning WILL make us better and relevant again in the short term but once my sanity kicks back in and I think long term the more this feels like an old Shaq coming to town were we eventually in that WIN NOW mode got old and slow after one title run with a group of nearly geriatric former greats looking for one last day in the sun ONLY to get left watching a Younger Kobe team dominate long term, different sport, scenario and way of viewing FA but the parallels are there. So I will say it here and now forever to be thrown in my face if I'm wrong and that is:

I WOULD TRADE JAKE LONG ALONG WITH MY #1,2,5,7 THIS YR. OR AT LEAST OFFER THE LT NEEDY RAMS THIS DEAL IN A MOVE FOR RG3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONG DOESN'T SCORE OR TAKE PART IN GAME CHANGING SITUATIONS!! THE IDEA OF TRADING HIM WITH A CHUNK OF THE 2012 DRAFT GIVEN OUR YOUNG TEAM NUCLEUS FOR GRIFFIN APPEALS TO ME, BIG TIME!!!!!

phins78 zona is just as good, lose the bias. we were 6-10 for petes sake! the browns beat us!

I wouldnt be heartbroken if Peyton doesnt sign with Miami. I would be heartbroken if Peyton didnt sign with Miami, Ross/Ireland signs Flynn, then still doesnt attempt a trade up for RG3.

Matt Flynn isnt going to sell any tickets in Miami unless he's working at the ticket window!

Fin4Life, When is your Boy Odin going to be here?

DID THE CUBAN LEFT JAIL YET ?

no doubt yesterday, best move by far is griffin

ODIN IS A MAN OF INTEGRITY .......

My scenario for Miami's draft: (Assuming they land P Manning)

rnd 1 #8 - Trade back with Cinn for the 17th pick. The #8 spot is worth 1400 pts...so Cinn would swap their 17th, Phins get their 2nd and 5th. Cinn takes Trent Richardson

Rnd 1 #17 - Cordy Glenn G or Whitney Mercilus DE (prototypical pass rushing 4-3 DE)

Rnd 2 #42 - Dwayne Allen TE (finally, a true pass catching TE)

Rnd 2 #53 (from Cinn) - Kevin Zeitler G (particularly if they go DE in Rnd 1) or Cam Johnson DE

Rnd 3 #73 - Nick Toon WR or Shea McClellin DE

Rnd 4 #103 - James Brown OT or Brandon Mosely OT

Rnd 5 #137 - Aaron Henry S or Omar Bolden CB

Rnd 5 #148 (from Cinn) - AJ Jenkins WR or Terrell Manning OLB

Rnd 6 - BPA

Rnd 7 - BPA

Yes to Manning but no to Wayne. We dont need Wayne and we dont have the cap space for Wayne.

well sorry mark if manning comes, wayne comes

Aloco,Check the word "Integrity" , This word in no way is Odin.

AND THE GARAGE MANAGER .........

Jake Long is damaged goods. If he can pass a physical trade him before he's finished.

THEN........ YG/DB IS A MAN OF INTEGRITY ?

YG....YOU TALK OF LONG AS IF HE'S A DEAD HORSE .....

longs gotta couple solid years left. 2-3 years id say

Aloco, You yourself has described YG/FB As a fish, and he is., Codos on the YG/DB name.

All this crap about trading Jake Long is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!! He is not one of the best, but thee best left tackle in the league. Ok he has been knicked up a little bit.

Wake up you ignorant fans!!

So tired of stupidy on this board!!

RG3 = Cleo Lemon

ALoco,

That wasnt me. I have an admiring troll. You know I wouldnt condone something as foolish as trading Jake Long.

Trolls, trolls, trolls.... Immitation is the greatest form of flattery! LOL

Another important thing is Manning commands respect in the huddle and the locker room. He will lead by example. Marshall's antics and excuses will be over.

Coalition,

Are you part of that Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton outfit?

If not, you thimking pattern definitely fits in. LOL

hes not the best but hes very good

Wolfman -- I mentioned that trade with Cincy a while back but getting different players after the first pick. I like Mercilus at 17 as well.

I also like AJ Jenking but think he's moving up to 4th round.

Can we put this Flynn nonsense talk to rest? That would be a giant leap backwards. Yet more confirmation:

Marhsall Faulk didn't seem as sure where Manning will land but mentioned Miami as a possibility.

"Matt Flynn just doesn't do it," Faulk said. "(He's) not Aaron Rodgers, let's be honest."

Are the Dolphin doctors that are going to look at Manning's neck the same ones who looked at Drew Brees shoulder and said no? I wonder....

I really want to see Dwayne Allen in a Dolphin Uniform. I'd really like Fleener too, but he'll be gone late in the 1st.

The Dolphins were too cheap to pay Brees. That doctor thing was the excuse.

TE is an area I feel like Miami could upgrade for sure. Problem is there is not too much available this year. Fleener, Allen and maybe a couple others. For a late round TE prospect I am interested in Egnew.

I DON'T KNOW WHY SOME OF MY FELLOW DOLPHANS HONESTLY THINK THAT PEYTON WILL COME TO MIAMI. ULTIMATELY, THE DECISION IS HIS TO MAKE. PEYTON WANTS TO COME TO A CONTENDER NOW. NOT IN TWO OR THREE YEARS. WE HAVE TOO MANY MISSING PIECES; OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY. ARIZONA IS THE PLACE THAT I THINK HE WILL END UP PLAYING FOR. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A HEALTHY MANNING COME TO MIAMI. I STILL THINK THAT BEST OPTION IS TO MOVE UP AND GET RG3; EVEN IF WE GET MANNING OR NOT.

Dee, try keeping in touch with the situation. Manning will not go to the NFC where he would clash with his brother to get to the the SB. Miami and Denver seem to be his best options, and who the heck wants to freeze over in Denver while watching Tebow in prayer all day long?

Dee - if we get Manning, no way they make a move for RG3. Economically, it's just not viable. They will be relatively heavily invested in P Manning and also have Moore on the books....they will look to build around that. If they go with Manning, they're in win now mode. If they do draft a QB, it would be in later rounds...I don't even think they'd spend a 2nd rounder on a QB if they landed Manning.

If Manning can indeed play even remotely close to his old self, the Phins really aren't that far off. Just a QB of that calibre can make a 6-10 team a 10-6 team overnight. Think of all of the 3 point or less losses....those now become wins.

Of course....this is if he really can play, which is where my doubts lie.

What cold weather? Anyone spend any time in the Northeast this year? It has literally been the "Year Without A Winter."

70 degrees in New York tomorrow. There hasn't been a drop of snow on the ground aside from two days (and it didn't stick around).

Some of you need to get the Weather Channel fixed on your cable!

Before everyone gets too giddy, Peyton has to pass a workout before any team will sign him. Will he pass? He may not be as far along as he thinks he is.

I have a wonderful feeling about all of this! Candles and ginger ale for everyone!

zona is his best option but i doubt he goes there

i disagree wolfman on the 10-6 record. if we got a healthy manning,IF, we would see 12-4

Manning to Denver is a long shot. As is San Francisco.

Miami, Washington, Arizona, and even the Jets are more likely landing spots according to most analysts.

Most agree Miami has the best shot, with Arizona a close second.

Why? Warm weather and a team with good pieces already in place.

Unless Ross/Ireland screw this up (which considering their track records is very likely), Manning should become a Dolphin.

with Manning and Wayne in mind.

1st Luke Kuechly MLB Boston College
2nd Kendall Reyes DT Connecticut
3rd Mitchell Schwartz OT Cal
4th Tommy Streeter WR The University of Miami
5th Vernon Olivier DE The University of Miami
6th Akiem Hicks DT Regina
7th Tank Carder OLB TCU

fin4life,

Mike Florio stated that Manning would use the Fins and Skins to try and get a better contract elsewhere.

Then a similar scenario will happen between the two for RGIII.

What do you think?

fin4,

Assuming the Manning deal falls thru, under what scenario do you see Griffin dropping to #7 or to Fins # 8 OR the Rams deciding to settle for less?

I assume it could happen if everyone above #7 gets a FA QB or decides they have too many other needs to fill to be giving the Rams their "RAMsom".

The Rams then settle for a swap with the Fins and one or two proven players in an area of need (Hartline,etc.).

What do you think are the odds of this happening?

Might as well trade up to get RGIII if we are trying to get Manning. Manning doesn't come cheap. RGIII (rookie salary cap) is probably cheaper than Peyton. To sign Peyton we will need to let a few folks go.

Does anyone think Peyton is not going to want (at least) the average salary of the top 5 QB's in the league? Dude is not going to be cheap.

Gizz, not again. The same soap opera that we just watched with Fisher will be repeated now with Manning as main actor and the Dolphins as cinderella waiting to see if the shoe fits.
This is just pathetic ! This team has no self respect. I have nothing against Manning, but a team desperate to hire a 36 old QB who cannot throw the ball... well, gizz, this shows the pathetic position the Dolphins have created for themselves during years of incompetence.

What we've all failed to ask is where does Archie want his son to play? Archie runs the Mannings with an iron fist what Archie wants Archie gets.
