David Garrard joins the Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins this evening added a 34-year-old veteran and prepared to cut a 34-year-old veteran.

David Garrard has agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins various media outlets are reporting, led by Foxsports.com which broke the story on twitter.

Garrard, who played 10 seasons in Jacksonville and has been a solid performer, obviously brings veteran experience in a backup role, assuming he does not win the starting job. It is unclear if he's been told he will able compete for the starting job or simply be the backup.

This much seems clear: It makes sense for the Dolphins to add at least one more quarterback, with that player probably being a draftee that can be groomed as the club's future franchise quarterback. It is also possible the Dolphins are still talking to Alex Smith but this is much less likely -- indeed, unlikely -- as Smith seems to be a better fit back in San Francisco.

The Dolphins did for all intents and purposes clear $4.3 million of cap space this afternoon by outlining to agent Drew Rosenhaus its intent to cut strong safety Yeremiah Bell. Bell has led the Dolphins in tackles in recent years but was seen as declining last year. While widely expected, this move was a departure from two weeks ago when general manager Jeff Ireland told Rosenhaus the team did not intend to cut Bell.

Garrard undoubtedly takes up some of the cap space created by the Bell move.

The Dolphins did not announce any of these moves. In truth, the Dolphins declined to confirm the fact Garrard visited Monday because he is a street free agent and the club does not announce visit from street free agents -- players that hit the open market because they were cut by other teams.

Garrard last season declined a chance to join the Dolphins in October after he was waived in Jacksonville. Two weeks later, while waiting to join the Oakland Raiders, he learned that he had a bulging disc injury in his neck and required surgery.

One assumes the Dolphins both worked out and gave Garrard a full physical before offering a contract. I also further assume Garrard's head did not fall off his shoulders during the physical because that would mean the Dolphins signed a headless quarterback.

Kidding. I personally like the addition. Worst-case scenario, the Dolphins have a better, more experienced backup QB than anyone else in the AFC East.

Sporano wanted Columbo.
If Philbim wanted Flynn he'd be here.

At this point, one almost expects the resigning of Columbo.

DAVID GARRARD BELONGS IN A GARBAGE BAG IN THE GARAGE..

HEHEHEHEHEH

How can any fan not be disappointed with what is going on? Irelands track record speaks for itself. The real loser here is Joe Philbin. He is being set up to fail. There are so many holes to fill, with only limited draft choices, and hardly any cap space. What's next? Joe Philbin announcing his resignation?

Philbin probably told Flynn to run as fast he could away from Miami. Even if Philbin wanted Flynn, Philbin does not control personnel. That's Ireland's department.

Sparano complained last year that the Dolphins did not aquire enough talent. Perhaps he was correct.

Once again we were beat at our own game. We are paying dearly for our own misfortunes. Marino should have been a part of the front office long ago....that's come to bite us in the rear end time and time again. Worse now than the past. Sure would help if we had some football experience rather than hollywood experience with this team!

well what do u think they made great moves so far i think they need alot more

When Green Bay started to improve many, many years ago, the got Reggie White.

The Dolphins bring in practice squad players.

So great watching a chess master like Jeff Ireland moving the pieces around! Genius moves!

My wife is a registered nurse who works with a neurosurgeon and has for the past 5 years and she looked up all the different surgeries that Peyton has had on his neck and she said he is one hit away from at least reaggrivating the nerve damage in his extremities. The doctor she works for said that he probably would not have released him to go play football again. I believe him he's a very good surgeon and he's on call for the president whenever he comes to southern Ohio so ill take his word. So maybe we dodged a bullet by being passed up by manning.

hey sigh,
the big EGO was in charge in 08,09,10. last year was irelands 1st(imo).there were no qb's worth taking @ 15 or trading up for.if we assume 2010 was his 1st year in charge,he got pouncy,clay/thomas/bush(3 future wc offense studs),wilson & gates(kr/pr),and he passed on overpriced orten, flynn, and smith.most important he hired our 1st 21st century thinker as a hc.have faith.philbin is a quality guy with the right stuff

I'm having my ass fitted for a solar sling-shot tomorrow. I'm somewhat encouraged that it's only a 1 year contract and if they pay him money commensurate with a back-up, I will scrub the launch. However, if they throw starter money at him...well, I'll send a postcard from 1970.

Hey Crusher,

I agree with you on Philbin. He seems like a good guy.

I'm still not convinced on Ireland's performance in last year's draft or this year's free agency.

But I freely admit I could be proven incorrect.

Blog Fodder

I laughed my ass off earlier today when you posted it and again just now, great post, I think we all need a little humor, this dark day.

Here's the plan. Trade for Tebow. Make Moore the starter, Tebow is the finisher. Moore plays the first 55 minutes. Tebow comes in at the end and score 14 points in the last 5 minutes. We win it all that way.

Forget Garrard, he's just insurance in case Moore gets hurt and Tebow needs a new starter to finish for.

Do guys STILL not get why Marshall was traded? Do you think he'd be a happy camper on the team with Moore and Garrard this year? Of course not. He's be bailing and quiting first chance he got. Good riddance. It's time to do this thing properly, from the ground up. Don't care if it's Tannehill or Weeden, just do it properly. For my money, I think it might be Tannehill now. I can see them wanted to draft this kid and have him sit for a year or two, the same way the Packers do it or the same way the Pats are doing it with Mallett. Nothing wrong with this at all.

Why won't these two ass clowns just skip off into fairy land?

Let's trade for Tim Tebow.

This signing means to draft a grooming QB.

PA,

may as well have some fun with it.

Could Ross have found a cheaper QB then Garrard? LMFAO!!

WELL, THE DOLPHINS JUST PROVED THEY ARE EQUAL OPPERTUNITY EMPLOYERS....THEY JUST HIRED THE HANDICAPPED !!!!
GARRARD???? REALLY ????
HOW DID WE LAND HIM WITH SO MANY TEAMS CHASING HIM???
LIKE hmmmmmmm and hmmmm and like NOBODY !!!!!!!
THIS MOVE SUX JUST LIKE HE DOES
THANKS FOR LEADING US HUNGRY FISH FANS TO THE PROMISE LAND ONCE AGAIN MR. ROSS !!!
EVERYONE HAS THE MIAMI DULL FROGS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE AFC EAST- AND UNFORTUNATLY I CANNOT ARGUE
NO HARBAUGH-NO FISHER-NO PEYTON-NO FLYNN-NO BRANDON MARSHALL- NO TALENT-NO FULL SEATS-NO MONEY FOR YOU !!!
GOOD RIDDANCE CHOWDER HEADED ROSS & IRELAND
I HOPE YOU GO BROKE AND HAVE TO SELL THE TEAM TO SOMEONE THAT ACTUALLY GIVES A CHIT !!!!

Armando,
Garrard has not been steady in Jacksonville. The fans wanted to throw parties when he was cut in the preseason. He has nothing left. That was the last guy I wanted. He stinks as Sid Rosenberg says.He should or retired last year.

ireland and especially ross should also just shut the f#ck up and do there jobs.everytime each opens his mouth,it creates a media shitestorm. ross just sign the checks and ireland do what you did in 2011 and 2012.of the qb's worth gettin in 2012 only rg3 was worth the trouble but he was too expensive for a hc who believes in maximizing the draft. lets see what this gm/hc combo bring to the table @ the end of april.come off the ledge and say SERENITY NOW.

I think it's going to be Tannehill now. No way they draft Weeden and then sit him behind two vets. No way he jumps ahead of two vets right off the bat, even if he has a higher upside. It's Tannehill for down the road. I'm convinced the Browns are taking Richardson at 4. They ned someone to take the load of McCoy.

Hey BRS I like the way u think! Lol I didn't want tebow when he was coming out of college but ill take him now. What the hell! What's the worst that could happen? We go 6-10 and miss the playoffs again?! Try something new it might pan out!

Let's trade for Tim Tebow.

Craig M aspires to only be a back-up qb for a championship team.He prefers riding other peoples coattails.
Tim Tebow in an aqua and orange jersey.

This is the WORST franchise in sports bar NONE!

How happy is Marshall he's off this disgrace?

please realize garrard-moore are 3/4 to 1 year placeholders for whomever they take in april(my moneys on cousins).check garrard's last 3 years on a punchless one horse no receiver offense.not bad for a stopgap. draft wr-qb-de/olb's in that order, sign marc anderson if he is still out there,& have faith that the new DC will do for our young db's what he did for reggie nelson. the d will keep us in games and then we compete in 2013.

Kill F...king Ireland!!!!!!

Mike Nolan bailed just in time.

Say it Aint so, Joe!!!!!

Ross is a jets fan!! He bought this team to run it into the ground and eventually move it! Ross has to go!!

We will be out at Davie at one.
If you are a tough guy...show up!!!!
Don't hide like a red headed girl.
We know whee you live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I will say one thing: it's probably good the Dolphins did not get Manning. Maybe he's great again and maybe he's not.

But here's the thing: Why did Manning to the Broncos and not the 49ers? The 49ers appear to be the best team, by far, of the two.

Peter King states, "That same source who thinks the 49ers believe they can bring Smith back intimated that he thought the Super Bowl-or-bust atmosphere that would have hounded Manning in San Francisco -- the Niners were clearly the best team of the three in contention for him -- was a negative for Manning, who can't be sure if he'll return to the form that made him one of the best quarterbacks of all-time."

Maybe it was sour grapes on the 49ers part. But the $90 Million paid by Denver for Manning shows that this was probably about money. Also, if Manning flops, then it's not going to be pretty in Denver.

A new comedy this fall! This entire franchise is stranded on "Gilligan's Ireland!"

How could you possibly expect anything else when you have a completely incompetent GM and a bumbling, meddling owner who doesn't even know if a football is blown up or stuffed.

I saw a couple of posts complaining about mediocrity. There is no mediocrity here. If the Dolphins were mediocre I'd throw a parade!!!!!!!!

Hey Randy, why not trade for Tebow and then see if Favre wants to come back? Then you will have a freakin' hat trick

Pittsburgh Steelers FS Ryan Clark said via Twitter free agents are not interested signing with the Miami Dolphins. "No one! To believe I almost went there, but it was an easy decision not to," Clark said. Clark considered playing for the Dolphins in 2010, even paying Miami a visit, before re-signing with the Steelers

NEED I SAY MORE ?? NOW THEY HIRE GOOFY GARRARD
*** BREAKING NEWS**** MIAMI IS WORKING OUT ERKLE FROM DANCING WITH THE STARS TO COMPETE WITH GARRARD TO HOLD MOORES JOCK STRAP...I PERSONALLY AM PULLING FOR ERKLE

Why are the Miami Dolphins paying the average players so much money?

Richie Incognito = $4.9 million

Anthony Fasano = $4.4 million

Tony McDaniel = $4.2 million

Dan Carpenter = $2.9 million

Lyndon Murtha = $1.9 million

Brandon Fields = $1.7 million

Total: $20 million dollars.

If Ross wants to rescue this franchise, he needs to fire Ireland NOW and replace him with Carl Peterson!!!!!

Something has to be done.... this is just scary at this point. It seems as though they are purposely ruining this team. Everything they said they were going to do, they wound up doing the opposite.

I think garrard might be best choice after manning. We can draft a qb now. Garrard not a horrible move, i dont hate it.

goodnight dolphans.hold your heads up and walk proud. if you see peter king and ryan clark tell them to f@ck off.joe philbin reminds me alot of tony dungy.well spoken, strong charactor, good credentials.ireland hired this guy.i really believe our mad hatter owner alone wanted manning & fisher(whose shams we will beat the shite out of in 2012)and i blame 08,09,10 on the big EGO. 2011 & 2012 was ireland & in my opinion he did ok(pouncy-clay-bush-thompson-moore-wilson-gates-said no to orten and flynn)give the ireland/philbin combo shot.

WOW! I just cant believe how far this franchise has fallen. Or how many year its going to take to clean up after Ross and Ireland are gone. Whenever that is.

It doesn't matter who they draft or sign as a QB, they have no right side of an O-line or a #1 receiver lol

Can we get an upgrade at GM please? I'll even take Matt Millen at this point. At least we would know we're getting a receiver with the #8 pick.

Ugh... Why even bother sign a QB? Why not sign a cartoon character to fill the role? Or maybe TD the dolphin can play QB for us? Screw it, Matt Moore is better than any of these chumps they've looked at since Manning.

Bring Tim Tebow to Our franchise,i.e.the Miami Dolphins.
Picking up David Garrard will be as useless as signing Larry Johnson was last year.WHY? Fire up the chopper and let's go get Tim Tebow.

new movement to get behind! VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

please sign to help us all out! thank you

David Garrard?? David Garrard?? Really?? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last post tonight:

I hope Tebow knocks Denver out of the playoffs one way or another next year. You have to admit, it would be a wild story and would be a fitting lesson for Elway.

Craig M,
Ireland doesn't believe in drafting a QB first round per Parcells. Ireland will draft an OL to tee off the Dolphin fans. Cleveland will draft Tannrhill if KC doesn't move up to #3. I have lost all faith in Ireland. It is time for him to step down. Ross thinks the stadium was empty last year. Wait till ticket sale drop even further. It is sad to see this team I love become a sinking ship.

I will not sign it until We agree to trade for Tim Tebow finfanmek

I knew Ross and Irescum were bad but this takes the cake. Worse then my wildest dreams.

Hope the Elway Broncos get cursed the same way the Boston Red Sox were cause of the Bambino trade.
