David Garrard joins the Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins this evening added a 34-year-old veteran and prepared to cut a 34-year-old veteran.

David Garrard has agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins various media outlets are reporting, led by Foxsports.com which broke the story on twitter.

Garrard, who played 10 seasons in Jacksonville and has been a solid performer, obviously brings veteran experience in a backup role, assuming he does not win the starting job. It is unclear if he's been told he will able compete for the starting job or simply be the backup.

This much seems clear: It makes sense for the Dolphins to add at least one more quarterback, with that player probably being a draftee that can be groomed as the club's future franchise quarterback. It is also possible the Dolphins are still talking to Alex Smith but this is much less likely -- indeed, unlikely -- as Smith seems to be a better fit back in San Francisco.

The Dolphins did for all intents and purposes clear $4.3 million of cap space this afternoon by outlining to agent Drew Rosenhaus its intent to cut strong safety Yeremiah Bell. Bell has led the Dolphins in tackles in recent years but was seen as declining last year. While widely expected, this move was a departure from two weeks ago when general manager Jeff Ireland told Rosenhaus the team did not intend to cut Bell.

Garrard undoubtedly takes up some of the cap space created by the Bell move.

The Dolphins did not announce any of these moves. In truth, the Dolphins declined to confirm the fact Garrard visited Monday because he is a street free agent and the club does not announce visit from street free agents -- players that hit the open market because they were cut by other teams.

Garrard last season declined a chance to join the Dolphins in October after he was waived in Jacksonville. Two weeks later, while waiting to join the Oakland Raiders, he learned that he had a bulging disc injury in his neck and required surgery.

One assumes the Dolphins both worked out and gave Garrard a full physical before offering a contract. I also further assume Garrard's head did not fall off his shoulders during the physical because that would mean the Dolphins signed a headless quarterback.

Kidding. I personally like the addition. Worst-case scenario, the Dolphins have a better, more experienced backup QB than anyone else in the AFC East.

Tim Tebow is a piece of s**t. If they sign him, I'm done. 35 years later. Done!!

http://www.change.org/petitions/the-miami-dolphins-organization-fire-jeff-ireland-and-have-stephen-ross-sell-the-team?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition

i'm begging you to sign this!

ONE MORE FOR 500! ...then i'm going to bed, so like it please! https://www.facebook.com/pages/FIRE-JEFF-IRELAND/119416248154671

Unreal. Good teams might have problems trying to keep they're players from leaving BUT I thought teams that had losing records were supposed to try & get better through FA. Still need a QB, a RT, a RG, another pass rusher, & NOW a Number One WR, & Safeties.

I think it will be between us, the Browns, the Colts, the Vikings, & maybe the Rams for the Number 1 pick next year.

jaison...I m sleeping so I ll never know what your stupid response!!!!!!!

Could Ross/Irescum have found any cheaoer QB's?

Actually I like the move on Garrard, you dont have to pay alot,he brings some experience and you are not going to get a QB worth drafting until next year. I don't like the release of Bell unless they plan to resign him for less, this guy was making some killer hits last year and I simply like the way he plays and I did not see any decline in his play last year. The problem is mostly with Ireland, I have heard this over and over from several sources that he is just an untrustworhty A-hole and you can't beleive anything that comes out of his mouth. The dolphins will never have a winning team until Ireland gets fired, period.

“is-your-mother-a-prostitute” line of questioning that worked so fabulously with Dez Bryant a couple of years back.

Mr. Bryant wants to have a sit down with you!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Are Ireland & Ross stupid??? ... Maybe their premier Qb that they were thinking is Ryan Leaf!!! ... It's sad, here in Mexico the Dolphins have a lot of fans since Griese, Csonka and Marino (the best QB ever play) and now Miami is a shame!!! Fire Ireland, who cut your leader in tackles for Garrard??? ... Just an donkey!!!

This same as trading Henne for Garrard.
Only stupid a sshole make that trade.

WOW, this is great TEBOW can hold a sunday church service at SUN LIFE before the game this will help fill the seats and then say a prayer after the game when the FINS lose. ITs a match made in heaven.

Jeremy, sorry it's just my frustration at the direction that their drafting philosphy has taken since Dave W. took over. The wide receiver position, the ability to have an explosive offense has been totally negated by the unwillingness to invest in the position.

Dave took one wide receiver in Rounds 1-3 in 2000-2004 (and his coaches had to talk him into taking Chambers). Ireland drafted Turner (3rd), Gates (4th), and Hartline (4th). Nothing higher, when it has been a talent starved position since Chris Chambers departed.

Compare that to Green Bay, which has expended a 2nd round draft choice almost anually on wide receiver for several years. It's why their offense is so talented.

Ideally I'd like to see Miami take a wide receiver in the first and second round and infuse some talent into the position. Instead, I fear that we will follow history and try to do it on the cheap, taking no one higher than the third round and perhaps seeking to find someone as a rookie free agent.

More f'ing patheticism. If this sh*t continues, it might become time for Occupy Dolphins Hdqtrs by the fans and ticketholders until Ireland is removed.

This isn't exactly news. Ireland isn't a popular figure in South Florida, not with fans and certainly not with some ex-Dolphins who have been vocal in the media.

Take free-agent linebacker Joey Porter, who didn't pull any punches Monday in explaining to NFL Network why he believed Miami is having trouble attracting free agents this offseason.

"I think Jeff Ireland has a big part to do with it," said Porter, who spent three seasons with the Dolphins from 2007-09. "I don't think when you come in being recruited by him you really believe things coming out of his mouth. I think he's a guy that's not trustworthy. He really doesn't hold up to what a GM's supposed to be."

Porter and NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp went on to discuss Ireland's Waterloo -- the GM's fateful decision during a 2010 pre-draft interview to ask Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. Ireland later apologized, but he's yet to shake the stink of that woeful lack of tact.

Porter's opinion evokes memories of Channing Crowder, another former Dolphins linebacker who told NFL.com during Super Bowl week that Ireland is "disrespectful" and "not a good person."

Gerrard is 2 years older and 3 inches shorter than Byron Leftwich. Not that I want him either. Just sayin...

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ireland finally made 1 move I suggested. I posted everyone on the roster making $4 million a year or more needs to be cut, renegotiated, or trade if possible.

I know it wouldnt be popular with most dolfans, but Long needs to be served up for a number 1 pick next year(plus at least an extra 2nd). Trade out of the first rd this year and pick up a extra 2nd.

Then we can go into the 2013 draft with 3 1st rd picks and at least 2 2nd rd picks. More than enough ammunition to trade up for Barkley if need. I say if needed because the way things now look. We could have 1st overall 2013 pick based on our win loss record alone. LOL

Yesterday....do you know what you get if you have 3 first rounders and 3 second rounders:

2 OL
2 DL/DE
1 DB
1 LB

where you at jaison?
Ireland loving MF!!!!!!

Chill Tony everything is going to be OK. The sun will rise. The Dolphins still have a winnable schedule, the Bills blew there wad on one player, they aren`t building a team. The Jets still suck and Brady is aging We learned some lessons this offseason. We`ve still got a deeper team. We can fill some obvious holes in the draft and hopefully get a franchise QB next year.
There will be cap room galore next year and a distinct possibility of a new GM . Hate on Ross all you want but he knew bringing Henne back was like giving the finger to many fans, I believe reluctantly he does the same with Jeff at the end of the season.
The team should be in BPA mode from now on. Things are always darkest before the dawn applies to us fans. As I said the sun will come up.

First get rid of the best offensive weapon, now get rid of the best defensive tackler. Oh and not to mention the end result of the "QB upgrade urgency" is Gerrard? The protest tomorrow is at 1:00 pm. I say we stampede inside the building like a team of angry Navy SEALS, grab Ross by those big ears, grab Ireland by wherever, drag them out onto the street, and beat the living s..t out of them!!!!
BOYCOTT ROSS AND IRELAND
"SELL ROSS SELL"

TonyCane,

Why so nice to Ireland? Ireland would trade down at least 2 of the 1st rd picks for a basket full of 3rd and 4th rders.

Ireland would turn 3 1st rd and 2 2nd rd picks into an entire 53 man "acorn" roster! LOL

extremely,

Bell getting older by the year(34yrs old). $4.5 million tied up in a player who even in his best playing days was once a pro bowl alternate at best.

What, you think now at 34yrs old he's now going to magically some how become better? Right now he's one of the reason our salary cap is presently out of wack. Bell is not worth $4.5 million dollars a year at this point in his career.

I went on Jacksonville.com to check it out since that is where Henne lives now and there ARE like 10 posts for the whole day.
Not 10 pages.
10 posts.
And the the chick hosting it is a NATIONALLY AWARDED WHITE JOURNALIST!

Garrard is a good signing as insurance, you know we got him on the cheap. However This should not suprise anyone. This FO will not pay for a QB nor will they draft one high. We will draft a QB in the second or third and cross our fingers again! The Dolphins are hell bent on a “deal” at football’s most important position…..”Stepping over dollars to pick up Dimes”

People, lets not loose it yet. I just got it! The "plan". Its been there all along. They're doing all of this to secure next years draft #1 overall pick for Matt Barkley! They learned from this past season as example. You have to cut ALL the talent out in order to really suck bad. This past season we didn't win the SUCK FOR LUCK contest because we had a few too many talented players. Jake Long and Cam Wake are the next casualties. You'll see.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

SMF,

Dont know if you ever been to Jacksonville, but it is cowtown redneck riviera. With a bunch of fancy concrete buildings slammed right into its center.

As far as Jacksonville is concerned there is only one pro football team in existence. They are called the Florida Gators. The Jaguars just become an interupting nusance when their winning.

BOYCOTT THE FINS UNTIL IRESCUM IS FIRED! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! HELP MAKE A CHANGE!

SOME PEOPLE CALL THEM THE 'JAG-YOU-ARS' AND OTHERS THE 'JAG-WIRES' AND OTHERS THE 'JAG-WARS.'

HAHAHAHA! IT IS VERY FUNNY!!

Sgt Tom Williams,
I have a boner to pick with you.
In the Marine Corps an E-5 is a Sergeant.
In the other branches it's a specialist-airman-seaman-specialist. No one knows what those things mean. Everyone knows what Sergeant means.

I really like Lou Reed, even if he can be an asswipe sometimes. I have heard he is rude at parties, for instance.

Do you like him?

No way Ireland survives...unless he's Ross's girl!!!!

The only starting-caliber veteran quarterback left is Alex Smith, who visited the Dolphins on Sunday but still would prefer to return to San Francisco. Smith likely would only come to Miami if the 49ers sign Manning.

Otherwise, the Dolphins will have to turn to the scrap heap to find a veteran quarterback – David Garrard (visiting today), Donovan McNabb, Caleb Hanie, Vince Young, Kellen Clemens and Jake Delhomme. The Dolphins could possibly pursue Tim Tebow if Manning chooses the Broncos, but Tebow would be a terrible fit in Joe Philbin’s West Coast Offense.

kris,
Before you get excited about a discussion among men, a discussion of military servcice of which you know nothing, seamen are enlisted naval personnel.
Semen is what is sticking to the back of your throat.
In your case it is quite likely that you could cross paths with some Seamen that would coat the back of your throat with semen 10 minutes after they cross paths with you at the local mall. BTW they will hold your ears and they will turn you over if you make them angry and/or have a smelly a sshole.

jaison!!! pull your panties up, Ireland is tired of spanking your ass!

Manning was a street free agent. I wonder if that's why he didn't visit?

For a team that sucks so badly, we sure do have a lot of moronic rules.

We have one voice. And it belongs to an idiot!

SGT,
kris is a local h omo that likes to post here but doesn't know much about acting like a man.
I try to coat his throat about 4 times a year. I always hold his ears when doing so.
Sometimes he starts crying when I'm holding his ears but I simply turn him over when that happens and that seems to release the tension on everything.
Frequently after I finish with kris I go to Denny's for brefast and get a BJ out of the the slightly-olders-slightly-heavier-slightly-stankier women that I will be pumpin toinight

biggs, 1 voice and 1 smelly a sshole between us.

Ross and Ireland are perfect for each other. Fins are doomed.

Hell, Ross cant fire Ireland. Ireland's having all of the bungles because he's doing exactly what Ross tells him to do.

Good work Pinnochio, we all know, that all u want to do is to "become a real boy"! LOL

Only way to get rid of Ireland is to petition the nfl to force Ireland to sell the team.

All dolfans, lets band together and create an online petition to Roger Goodell to force Steven Ross to sell the team!

Ireland is so happy to have a job he'll toss Ross's salad.

Being as this year's draft is supposed to be deep at the wide receivers position, I'm wondering what the Dolphins will do this year in the draft.

If Philbin wants to build the team the way Green Bay does, I'd expect a WR to be taken in the 1st or 2nd round. Which is totally against the way that Parcells taught Ireland.

If Ireland stays with the Tuna's teachings, only lineman are really worth a 1st or 2nd. WR's are only picked in rounds 4-7. If Jeff stays true to his cheap "value" philosophy, he may only draft one Wide Receiver anyways. Then, hope he can find another one afterwards as an undrafted rookie. But, if we're changing over to the WCO, we really need more receivers. In the West Coast, they have to run precisely timed routes. That's one of the reasons B. Marshall was let go. The ball gets spread around and there really isn't a #1 and a #2, 3, or 4. Think more of a Patriots-style Offence before they started using two tight end sets.

Where and how we get Wide Receivers this year will tell us a lot about who is really making the decisions. Or, at least, if Ireland is trying to give Philbin what he needs to win or not.

And the hits continue. Forget Garrard, how about the levelof incompetence by releasing Bell a week after free agency started? LOL way to go aholes, way to show respect for the player with the longest tenure, captain and one you yourselves asked him to restructure his deal.

Anyone still thinking this was also part of the plan? And you wonder why there are legions of players out there talking all kinds of horror stories about this team, specifically about the morons running the show?

Again it is NOT about the move, in fact is a good one, but it was waaaaaaay overdue. I'm just trying to think the MO of these douchebags, why all of the sudden release Bell, should have happened a week ago, heck last season prior to the trade deadline, or actually any time after that.

"Yeremiah Bell was their best player in the secondary last year and probably their best player on defense. He will be in Foxboro with Belicheat by the end of the week.
----
You beat me to it. How about it happens by Wednesday.

Why do you folks think Garrard is the self appointed starter? Unless you think he's better than Moore from jump. And for that, I'm sure he's satisfied. You guys think David is the starter. That must mean you think he's better than Moore.

We lost out on every QB in the market that's worth a darned.

Garrard doesn't hurt this team. He only helps this team.

YES... FINALLY... After 10 years of waiting we finally have a franchise quarterback!!! THANK YOU JEFF IRELAND YOUR THE BESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI...tackels don't win championships.

Bell subscribes to the quiet room lock down mentality.

"He stinks," Bell replied, according to CBS Sports. "That shouldn't be said around this locker room. We know that we're 0-6 and we're not playing the best, but at the same time there's no need for that."

He should be gone because all he wants is a paycheck. Doesn't even care about the team's win loss record. He'd rather the team STFU instead of facing their problems.

Make no mistake, Bell was covering his own butt. He ain't that good for the price we are paying.

It's sad when u have to depend on rookie WR's to save our season, but it's true! Trade the 2 3rd rounders to move up and draft Blackmon. Because Hartline as our #1 is a joke.
We can also draft Tommy Streeter or another receiver.
If Lamar Miller is there in the 2nd round, get him to.
We dont need Tannehil, Jacory might be a free agent.
We also need players in the secondary who can get picks other than Vonte.

You guys complaining about the cap need to realize Bell was part of that. This team is up against the wall with barely above average players.

Bell is BARELY above average. Getting paid like he's Revis.

I'd rather them just clean house of all the average players and use that money on play makers.

I mean really, Bell had 6 INT's in 8 years. 4 tackles a game that he started.

Heck, they can pay me in cheesy grits and I can match that.

ZERO PICK SIXES FOR BELL IN 8 YEARS. 16 YARDS ON 7 FUMBLE RECOVERIES. Bell has never even scored a TD in 8 years. Jason Taylor got 6.

Dude ain't that good for the price we are paying.

Bell has 6 INT's in 8 years. That's less than 1 a year folks.

Bell is not that good for the price.

Austin: Did you watch the Fins this year? I am choosing to pick on you because you are a typical uninformed Dolphins' fan IMO. You advocate signing another QB, ANY QB ! because you drink the KoolAidsome of the other uninformed fans advocate. Dude, we have a young, hungry, motivated , skilled and W.ZiZnNIZjG QB on the roster .Name's Zmatt Moore. He's pretty fu. king good. Watch him a little and you may agree our franchise guy is here. I truly hope the kid benefits by having a full training camp with the 1st team offense, tears it up on he fiend thus year and smokes Jeffy fir a big contract next year. Would be deservedly so fur the non-believing SOB Ireland! I am rooting for Natt Moore and I like his chances. I have been a Dolphins' dan since 1970 and I have paid my dues. I wish you flaky fans would move on to the Jets, or Liverpool. ((Bunch of goofy co.cksuckets!) go Znatt Zmoire! Kick done fu.king ass! You do have fans and believers in Dolphns' nation!

Mr. Ireland,
Please be a professional and honorable person and resign from our beloved Dolphins!
If you do not do the right thing, we will do all that is within our legal rights to make sure you leave.
Do the right thing and let someone who knows how to bring the Miami Dolphins back to it's legend.

OPEN LETTER TO JEFF IRELAND

Please clean this house!

1. Get rid of high paid average players.
2. Open up true competition with the remaining players.
3. Don't even THINK about winning the AFC East title next season.
4. Turn over the keys to Philbin. He is AT LEAST a football man and not a corporate shill like you. If that's not possible...THEN QUIT! You've made more money than 99% of the world in the last 4 years. Cash out and let this team heal if you can't turn over the keys.
5. Sit back and DO WHAT THE COACHES WANT.
6. Sit back and DO WHAT THE PLAYERS NEED.
7. Sit back and DO WHAT THIS TEAM DESIRES.

Matt Moore is the Dolphins Starting Qb in 2012. He's better than Flynn and Smith. Garrard is just the backup.

Personally, if you didn't make the probowl then you would be on my chopping block. I'd be carving you up for hotdogs.

Time to clean this house Jeff! Too many folks collecting paychecks instead of doing their jobs properly.

I use to hate JT when he signed with another team. But even JT did his job wher he was at. Well, except for Washington.

Dansby would almost certainly be on my chopping block.
