Dolphins answering other teams' moves ... not really

The Buffalo Bills just announced the signing of pass-rush machine Mario Williams, the biggest defensive prize in free agency. Oh yeah, the Dolphins can still answer that move because backup offensive lineman Artis Hicks is still being wooed by Miami!

Yeah, I'm sure the move makes Peyton Manning want to come to the Dolphins more. "I've been able to play against great quarterbacks," Williams said, "I'm looking forward to chasing down these [AFC East] quarterbacks."

Of course, better offensive lineman Eric Winston, who blocked Williams in practice every day for the Houston Texans, has left South Florida after a visit with Miami. He's looking to become the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL. And that is probably too rich for the Dolphins right now.

The Patriots are expected to soon start hosting visits, with LaRon Landry a likely target. No worries, the Dolphins don't worry about other teams' safeties because the word around the NFL is new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin doesn't like alpha wide receivers on his team. He likes his offense to have two or preferrably three good receivers rather than one supremely talented guy that demands the football.

So take that safeties! The Dolphins may not have better talent at receiver today than two days ago, but at least you can't gameplan for Miami's guys!

Plus the Dolphins just signed Steve Slaton to a one-year deal so they're ready to return kickoffs for touchdowns anyway ... and now they have a third running back in the mold of Reggie Bush.

The Jets are about to get a visit from safety Reggie Nelson, a former first-round pick and someone Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle knows well. No serious interest from the Dolphins so far.

On the Peyton Manning front, the Titans and Broncos are scheduling visits with reputed veteran pass-rusher John Abraham -- who in the previous games against the Dolphins has been a monster. The move suggests at least a couple of teams vying for Manning are not standing still on other fronts.

More proof of that is the Titans, hoping to upgrade the offensive line for Manning, just announced the signing of guard Steve Hutchinson -- a Fort Lauderdale native.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, have re-signed try-hard bottom of the roster defensive end Ryan Baker but are apparently ready to lose Kendall Langford, who today is visiting with the Bengals and could next go to St. Louis.

Why am I not all that impressed with Miami's first couple of days in free agency, you ask? Read the last few paragraphs again. Tell me what move impresses so far?

The Dolphins remain on Manning watch. But as details of his visit to Tennessee continue to leak out -- the latest is he got a call from the governor while he was there, a shoutout from the legislature, and an offer to work for the club for the rest of his life after his playing days -- the less I'm inclined to think he's going to end up with the Dolphins.

They remain hopeful. They remain in it according to several sources. But this is looking more and more like the Dolphins are a one-way elevator.

And we're about to get let down.

Slaton got us our first win last year. Good player.

Timmy-
No-one cares what you have to say or your BOLD predicitions.

We are STILL in the running for Manning, you know?

Guard Steve Hutchinson -"a Fort Lauderdale native"- going to the Titans is not nearly as big a signing as ours so far. Sorry.

The Broncos and Titans are talking to various players? So what?

Mando,

I'm beginning to think that YOU are the problem with the Miami Dolphins! You hate the team and provide a forum for other little haters! In fact, you help create them because you throw fuel on the fire. For every positive post you make, we have to wade through a dozen negative ones! And, even when you try to write something positive about the Fins, you can't without stirring up the negativity pot. Maybe, if you'd start focusing on some positives, this team would win more games. Stop trying to be a hack writer! Or, are you gearing up for a career with the National Inquirer?

C'mon man! I know it's the off-season and all, and that the club won't give you any info because they think you're a penis-head, but maybe...just maybe...if you'd write some good stuff about the Fins every once in a while, they'd see you as fair and balanced! And, then they'd respect you more. You might even get some national recognition. Instead, it's all whiny crying yada yada yada....the Fins suck!

If that's all you've got to say, your negative opinions about the Dolphins, no wonder they don't like you! You get more flies with sugar than you do manure! Just saying...

Those saying "F you" to me:

1. Nice.

2. You are one of the idiots who said last Friday that Manning would be signed by Monday, because you're childish, I pointed out, and your only response is "F you" because you can say nothing else.

Manning will sign with denver soon or the dolhpins. It's in the bag.

wow your esp astoundes me, carnac the douchebag. Frankly I dont want manning, but your attitude and unreadable posts r just so exciting.

Timmybag you are joking or stupid.

I wish I knew you in person because, no joke, I would bet you $10,000 that Manning signs with Tennessee. You have to be kidding.

We are not rebuilding but because our FO has no football sense they will try and play off their terrible management skills as rebuilding. Mr Ross says he wants Manning so how is that rebuilding? To not ook stupid if we don't get Manning they will say we are trying to get younger and so forth when in actuality they are bad negotiators and poor managers.

Nice hack piece Mando! You've repeatedly stated they should not sign Manning and now you r acting as if it is the end of the world. You have commented b4 the fins should part ways with BM and now criticize Philbin for doing so after he beats another women! Way to not mention Soliai, don't want any positivity to make its way to your work!

I think they'll be more fans at a water polo match then at the Dolphin games this year.

Manning will sign by 6pm with fins today!!!

Everyone who is saying the way to build is to keep your players has to remember that the players we are keeping were 7-9, 7-9 and 6-10 last three years.

Yeah, that makes me really want to keep my roster intact. NOT!

Good post Tracy!!

I don't want Manning either. I'm simply pointing out that it is obvious to anyone who pays attention and reads BETWEEN THE LINES of the misinformation put out there by the media that he will sign with Tennessee, where he was a collegiate hero.

I don't believe that was his first thought when he began this tour of options, but it's become clear after Tennessee came out of nowhere to really go for him. And it makes sense.

I'm not sure he thought Tennessee would even be one of the suitors 2 weeks ago.

In any event, Manning will sign with Tennessee.

Who the heck is this Timmy person, she has a bit of issue? Period time I assume? Who gives a rats ass about manning and titans. I want to see this team in sept, new coach alone with 2 wins!!

DOLPHINS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROSS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IRELAND REALLY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just say it alreadyREBUILDING!!!!!

Green Bay doesn't make moves because they were 15-1.

New England was 13-3.

Pittsburgh, Houston, other teams that haven't done things are just much better than us. We suck! We can't take the same approach as them.

Why don't you idiots see that?

Anyone remember the Patriots' glorious free agency spree of last season? You know Haynesworth and Ochocinco? And how successful was that little exercise, eh?

The Jets have done nothing except lose players and baby Sanchez, New England has picked up one decent linebacker and that's it. Even if they get Landry, what makes you think he's going to stay healthy for the season?

The Bills added one good player, which still leaves them with enough gaps to market their team as a Swiss cheese substitute.

The Dolphins have added a useful cornerback, which was a need, re-signed Soliai to a reasonable deal and haven't overpaid for Flynn. They've got rid of a problem in Marshall who dropped more passes than anyone else in the NFL last year - and acquired two useful picks for him.

So far the Dolphins have done a solid, sensible job and ought to be praised for it, rather than eliciting howls of panic from the fake fans on here.

We have 3 losing seasons in a row, no SB win in 40 years, a cheap crap owner, idiot GM, novice HC, and no QB. But lets stay positive. LMAO!

Mando report on every other signing but say nothing about Henne 2 yr $9.25mil including $3mil signing bonus.

Mando still sore because Henne is German for Jeffe.

BREAKING NEWS: Manning NOT signing with Dolphins. Haha Dolphins are idiots.

Listen, for those of us who can see, we are witnessing this off-Season a master negotiator in Jeff Ireland. I am going to stick with him until Peyton announces he won't come here. Over and out.

Kindry, that's ridiculous. This team has done NOTHING for it seems like decades. To sit here and say there is no need to sign big name Free Agents is also B/S. We have spent the last couple years drafting Linemen with our first round picks. Sporano was fired because Ireland told Ross that we have the talent to be big time, maybe 1 or 2 players off. Well, if we are only one or 2 players off, then we should have signed them in Free Agency to complete the team. If we draft a lineman with our number one pick I will jump off a bridge. There comes a point where the fan base gets sick of hearing, "in a couple seasons" Hope you do not live in South Florida, because if this team doesn't sign someone and makes a splash, you won't be seeing to many games on TV

It's raining right now. How appropriate.

Mando report on every other signing but say nothing about Henne 2 yr $9.25mil including $3mil signing bonus.

When Colombo (so rude to the press!) retires we'll hear about it!

Where is Tommy-
Need some great insight. What number will Manning wear when he signs with phins or broncos?

Yes, Mando you are definitely the problem. You were terrible playing RT last year. And I didn't like all those touchdowns you dropped. And I wish you were not in that bar causing Brandon Marshall to get in a fight.

And obviously it was YOU not Ross or Ireland who failed to land Manning and failed to Harbaugh and failed in hiring Fisher.

By the way, YOU deciding to put on a Tebow day the day we played Tebow was troubling also. And those times you were working as game officials you made some bad calls against us.

Also I blame you for us not having a QB since forever. It's all your fault.

Oh yes, Tracy. We have known that from a long time ago.

Before the season even ended Mando announced that Soprano was fired so that we could start working on getting Cowher here before everyone else got involved.
Look we are now.

bobby,

Surprised to hear some of this stuff coming from you. I'm guessing you're bitter over the Marshall trade. What is it you think the FO should have done in the first 48 hours of FA that they haven't done? Signing Soliai and Marshall were good moves. I couldn't care less about the Marshall move, other than it opens a hole that wasn't there before.

There's not a team in the NFL that wins championships based on what they do in FA. Have we all made the Bucs the Super Bowl favourites now, based on the last 48 hours?

Has the NFL ever seen a worse GM?

Can Ireland and Ross run this team any deeper into the ground?

mando, why do you like to write for the paper of a team you hate so much? We have won the off season with marshall and dansby. Guess what we didn't win in the regular season. They kept the defense intact and rebuilding the offense in philbin's mode. have patience or go write for some other team.

Your just made because you didn't see the solia signing, or hear bout it till the last minute.Solia is a bigger signing then langford any hoot

I'm positive Mando knows nothing...claims to have sources...the only source he has is ESPN !

Seriously, it is if this team never has a plan - Ok- they trade a bad dude for nothing - so I am expecting a big WR signing (Jackson - Bowe - Lloyd etc.) - But nothing. If Manning was considering the Fish there is no way he is now - nevermind they dont have a receiver - the fact that they have zero game plan in FA is a joke! Manning can see that this team has no plan at all!

3 yrs ago we had no QB and no WR - we at least pulled off a big trade for marshall(energized me as a fan) - now we are back to where we were - this team is worse than the last few years. Rt. now it is a 4 to 5 win team at best.

Instead of signing Winston they are flirting with Hicks. Instead of signing nelson they sign marshall.

They talk about ross' desire to win and an open pocket book - WELL ONE YEAR SPEND SOME $$$$$ - improve the team - GIVE the fans some excitement - hope - They regress every year.

It is so hard to root for them!!!! Its a joke - the leadership is a joke!

I don't consider Armando's comments negative at all, wake up people he is just being realistic about the dolphins situation and there situation just happens to be very negative, just a fact that cannot be discounted.Like I have been saying all along they will lose out on Manning and overpay for a weak armed 2nd rate QB like Flynn. I would much rather have Henne back, anybody notice he was playing better than he ever had, before the injury.Folks this is going to be a much more more painful season than last year. BOYCOTT THE GAME TICKETS, maybe an empty stadium on game day will force some new strategy in the future

"How do they think we as fans want to go down this rebuilding stage again.

"

Not sure what you thought was going to happen after firing the coach and letting the starting qb go

Starting to see more and more people catching on to how he writes. Nothing good to say most of the time. Just doom and gloom

Armando is pissed, the FO is even more tight lipped now than before. All he can do is guess what is going on, and it is killing him...
I think he knows the Fins are no longer in the Manning hunt. Why even bring it into conversation any more. The Fins are building a team, not sucking up to Manning.

the interview w/ Richard Marshall is interesting. He seems like he'd be a great fit at FS.

Manning knows what he is going to do. It's time for an announcement.

Maybe he found his common sense? The phins are a joke dude. Wake up!

No team wins championships in Free agency you say? I bet you've been using that line to defend this team since the 70's!

The dolphins are never willing to make "big" moves. Just because some players demand a high price tag, it automatically turns the phins off. Well, some players are actually worth it. We need a right tackle badly, but we're afraid to pay the best one available? We need a QB badly, but continue to wait on manning. Refused to trade up for RG3...will miss on Tannanhill. Now we need a wideout badly because we traded beast for a third rounder? Didnt make any play to any recievers to try and replace him. I also highly doubt they will trade up for Blackmon, which is a shame considering how Dez Bryant turned out. Blackmon is even better than him too. If you want to build a contender, you have to be willing to spend a little money to get good players. I'm not talking last years eagles style....but at least get a couple that you know will greatly help your team compete. Instead we sign players that "maybe" will turn out. Well "maybe" doesnt win games.

I think Ireland is practicing for his next gig, politician. Just sit around collecting money and do nothing.

Feelin' kinda down until I read this:

Thanks for the laugh Oscar

All of you fools that think Manning is going to go down in a heap, are the same ones who didn't want the Dolphins to take Brees.

Armando I'm really doubting you now, this is another crapper... Good teams (like GB, NYG, etc..) build thru the draft not thru Free Agency (Washington)

Losing Mike Nolan and Brandon Marshall off a 6-10 team is disaster. Who's is going to pay $ to watch this mess?

PS-Artis Hicks sucks...There is a reason why he was not a starter for the lowly Browns...There are still some very highly rated guards available in free agency...Pay Winston and sign a legit starting right guard...PS-No way in hell Manning is coming to the Fins. We have not shown him that we are serious about winning now since the opening bell of the 2012 season on Tuesday!

Peter King is a sports writer. What does he know about the subject?

I'm all for building the team the way Philbin apparently wants to, via draft. Having said that there are certain positions that are a lot harder to ace in later rounds of the draft such as offensive lineman, by the way a major need for the team. So the fact that we let Eric Winston leave South Florida without a contract is a major, major disappointment.

Signing him at this juncture should have been just as important as signing whichever QB is in the plan. At this juncture you have to assume is Matt Flynn, not my preference but the more I hear about his familiarity with Philbin's system you have to give it a go, especially now that we will not be giving up a pick for him and his contract value has diminished to the tune of $5 million/year. WTF is this idiot -Ireland- waiting for? Ross has to have a hand on all this as he foolishly waits on Manning like the bachelorette he seems more and more to be.

Signing both Flynn and Winston would become the building blocks for this team rebuilding or not. It will allow to focus on the draft on positions of need that require the use of a higher picks, such as pass rusher, and skill on later ones WR, TE, secondary.

By the way, leaving the Manning sweepstakes would bring some sense of self-respect to a franchise that once upon a time any player -or coach- would have love to come to play for, I mean it is Miami after all, rich sports figures you think would love to live here. It seems as we always lack the balls to pull the trigger at the right time. On the other hand Mr. Ireland has become an expert on quick reactions like the one that jettisoned Marshall for two measly late 3rd picks. We all begged him last year -when it made sense- to trade him. Every passing minute of non-action from this front office gives you less and less confidence and one can just hope -again- they know what they are doing. Too bad their record is not good.

Also, focus on Flynn...If we cant afford Flynn and Justice then just sign Justice!!! By solidfying our offensive line, Matt Moore should reduce his lead league in fumbles in half for 2012.
