Dolphins are still in Manning sweepstakes

This morning I did my usual round of texting/emailing/begging to my Dolphins and other NFL sources. And the question du jour (that means today) had to do with ESPN's constant reports that the Dolphins are down and nearly out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.

I reported to you over the weekend that Miami is in lockdown mode on the information and informed sources front. And there is two ways to take this approach.

It is either good news because it means the team is shutting down as to not hurt any possibility of getting Manning -- a possibility that still exists. Or ...

It means the club has locked down because Manning has swatted them aside like a gnat and Miami is simply trying to mask the embarrassment.

So I asked my sources if it's fair to believe lockdown mode is a sign the club is still in the game for No. 18 and doesn't want to hurt those chances.

"Fair," one source responded.

"Correct," another source responded.

There you go, folks. The Dolphins are still in the Manning sweepstakes. It is not over after Manning's trips to Denver and Arizona.

Doesn't mean the Dolphins will get Manning. But there is still hope.

I hope we are out of the damaged-controlfreak-sweepstakes! We have a new head coach & he should be allowed to implement his plans not General Manning's! Hello did no one see what happened in Indy last year with an offense totally tailored to uknowwho's wants? It didn't work at all without him! No GM/head coach should ever allow that situation to arise. Too many pundits are in favour of re-treads coming to Miami whether it be one trick ponies like Fischer or damaged old goods like Manning! I've had enough of the BandAid on the gunshot wound mentality! Give the new head coach & youth a chance coz short term solutions generally provide you with long term problems!

I hope this is true. I have to admit it don't look good for the Dolphins but there is no reports that the Dolphins are out. I hope the Dolphins have used the two days to there advantage. They have no excuses not to be prepared since they have had 3 days to put together their best offer. The question is are they even getting to give their pitch? They better bring in something (money) and someone (Shula) to get Manning's attention when he arrives. They must show that this organization is together. They need to use Reggie Wayne indirectly to show that they are planning on signing him. It would be great if they could bring him in directly but got be carefull because free agency begins Tuesday at 4PM. They need to be all on the same page and blow him away. This is more than signing a 4 time MVP. The Dolphin image is on the line. They can't afford to lose this one because of past mistakes. I just hope they get the chance.

I hope we land him. Not always a fa of Manning, but he would improve the team immediately, and allow for the Phins to draft a QB in the 2nd/3rd rounds to learn under him for a couple of years.

I just don't see how he signs with DEN or ARI. I truly believe the Phins a QB away from being a legit contender in the AFCE and the playoffs in general. You go back thru the last 10 yrs and this has been a sticking point with the teams. We've had some really good RBs (Williams, Brown and now Bush) and WRs (Marshall, Bess) but have lacked a consistent man under center.

The weather is suited for him, the challenge of this division, the support of fans/team. I just don't know how we don't get this done.

Can't we offer to give Jeff Ireland to Manning so he can be his personal butler or something like that? He's not a very good GM, but I am guessing he probably would be decent at dusting or maybe fixing a nice glass of lemonade. No way any other team was clever enough to throw in a butler with their offer.

I dont care if we get him or not. RG3 and Flynn were my top 2 options anyway. Granted Manning healthy would be instant glory, but only a short term answer. If we do miss out on Manning, I believe Flynn will come here to be with Philbin. All is not lost. And we saved our draft picks.

@dolphin fan in georgia ... who in the dolphin organization ever said they even wanted Manning?
the only people that have said they want Manning are the media and a bunch of fans? Maybe there isnt a meating set up cause they dolphins haven't acted like they want him that much ... and i dont think they would bring shula over any body in to try to sway Him ..LOL It's all business if they do only the coaches and maybe the owner thats it1 if you need smoke and mirrors to sign someone then they stupid and dont need them on their team anyway.

I hope the powers that be have had a plan B, plan C, and plan D all along.
Putting all your eggs in one basket would not have been very wise.

Go Dolphins!!

Ixxy13,
I want Manning in Miami. I have to admit that Flynn may be best long term anwser but Manning if healthy get the Dolphins closer to the Super Bowl in next two years. I won't be disappointed in Flynn.

Well - Tomorrow's the big day huh?
Good luck Jeffy with the grocery shopping.

How do you guys know if Matt Flynn isn't plan A .. and they wanna just take a look at Manning and he is really plan B ?

(( MANNING SWEEPSTAKES ))

SOUND LIKE FLORIDA CRUISE LINER COMMERCIAL ................

PS...ANY ONE GOES FOR INVOLVES SWEEPSTAKES ANYTHING IS NO GOOD ..................

Jeff Row,
Shula is on the pay role for the Dolphins. That's the only reason. I wouldn't bring Marino because that would be cheesy but Shula is getting a salary so why not use a legend to bridge the gap. I agree it comes down to X's and O's. I think Philbin and Sherman will do an awesome job at that. They both have coached future Hall Of Fame QBs (Rodgers and Farve). Dolphins have an image problem so it wouldn't hurt to have the greatest coach in the team's history present to show all are on board for Manning.

Manning might not decide for weeks!

If Manning doesn't visit Miami today, it's over. Legit chance Miami goes 0 for 3 on the QB circuit. Then we get to hope for Barkley next year and miss on him too!

Jeff,
I won't be disappointed if Dolphins end up with Flynn. He is a proven winner (national championship with LSU).

MANNING WOULD BE ON THE SIDELINE AND WE WOULD BE HIS RETIREMENT PACKAGE ......

THE DENTIST .....

THE NECK................

The inability of the team to get quality players is embarrassing. The pats and other wining teams have good players they actually have to turn down. Wish we ha that problem.

(( BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE )).........

(( MANNING SWEEPSTAKES ))........

fin4ever,
I agree with you. If Manning doesn't visit today then the Dolphins should cut the chord and turn to their attention to getting Flynn. Jeff Row may be right. They may already in that mode.

this whole thing reeks of desperation. I think we need to be concerned with the future; not just the next year or two. Manning is yet another band-aid/short term solution to a long term problem. we need a young QB (Tannehill) who can adapt to our system and learn the game. if we do get Manning, we are forced into his game plan and then in 2 years, we are right back where we are today....in AB desperation mode

ALERT.......

THE RED SKINS AND KC FIGHTING AMONG THEMSELVES TO SIGN VHAD HENNE AT THE BEGINNING OF FA.............

HENNE WOULD STEP UP IF RG3 NEEDS MORE TIME TO START AND WOULD BE BETER THAN GROSSMAN OR BECK,BOTH BUSTS .

all this talk is just bogus .. we dont know what Miami's thought on this are .... they might not like Flynn or Manning! doesn't mean they wont take a look at them though .. they dont even have to take a look at Flynn maybe they already decided on him no way or another. Just cause you look and bring a player in doesn't mean you 100% want to sign him.Unless your denver seattle, AR. ... our Coach said we will look at all options and make our mind up that way.

ANY SMART PERSON WOULD CONCLUDE IS BY HIRING A NEW HC ,HE WOULD PLAN FOR THE FUTURE NOT RECYCLE OLD QB IN HIS NEW SYSTEM........

We need to hear from HOME!

HOMe knows what is going on with Peyton Manning!

HOME IS VERY SELF CENTERED PERSON........HE JUST CLAIM HE KNOWS MORE THAN ANY ONE WHICH IS FINE .........

BUT THE FACT HE GETS IT WRONG MOST OF THE TIME .......

Jeff Row,
I like Philbin as coach. Bringing in Sherman as OC shows he is legit. I never was a Sparano fan because of his conservative approach. He played to not lose (fist pumps) instead of playing to win (touchdowns). I think those days are behind us. The key is finding the best QB to get it done.

Steve Wilkinson = HOME.

It's simple: Manning to Denver, Tebow to Miami. The Wildcat lives again!

Fake ALoco Troll. I am certainly not HOME, but am awaiting his posts on Peyton Manning. Too bad I have to sort through your idiot posts as I await the news from HOME, who for the record is more accurate than all other sportswriters and bloggers I have read to date.

Mr. America,
Not going to happen. Dolphins are a west coast offense now. Tebow doesn't have the arm for that system.

HOME WAS RIGHT ABOUT MARSHHALL AND DANSBY LAST BIGG FREE AGENCIE TIME.WONDER WHAT HOME HAD FOR BREAKFAST?

dolphin fan in georgia ... i'm with you on Sparano... I'd like it if we signed Flynn and drafted Tannehill, and traded Matt Moore to seattle or some team to get anther 2nd or 3rd round pick ... sign some OL and DE and keep this train moving foward ... If we already decided that Matt Moore isnt going to be our starting Qb why keep him around just to let him sign somewhere else after next season and get nothing in return ... I like Philbin(Phinbin0 build your team through the draft .. not washed up 36 year ild Qb's .. i think thats why there isnt a meeting set up yet ..cause the dolphins want to see him throw and decide if they want to sign him or not ... I have a feeling other teams want him more thats why he might go elsewhere other than here ... He had his friend reggie wayne try to pump his Value up with us by saying he would come here as well ... believe me . i think Peyton wants to come here .. the question is though ... do the dolphins want him?

Just more national egg in your face for hyping the want (Harbaugh/Fisher/Manning/Flynn) then not delivering the goods...I mean who didnt think we would go O-fer anybody???

Sorry, Its damage control mode. We are the gnat. At least we lost him because we are incompetent idiots. He didnt need a meeting to determine that.

Look this is it in a nut shell. build the team around Moore and or the qb we select next year, Barkely. None of the options are better then Moore. Manning a huge gamble for 2yrs then what. Flynn no guarentee's and the price will be too high. Moore proved he can win make the team as a whole BETTER, then the Qb will be easier to fill because the need won't be as great as it is now.
LOOK IF MANNING GOES DOWN IN GAME 1 FOR DENVER OUR GM WILL LOOK LIKE EINSTIEN. LET HIM GO TO DENVER LET THEM HAVE THE MESS WHEN IT DOES'NT WORK OUT. THROUGH HIS PRIME HE WON 1 SUPERBOWL WITH THE COLT'S ODD'S OF HIM WINNING ANOTHER WITH ANY OTHER TEAM IS VERY VERY SLIM. LET OUR COACH BUILD THE TEAM HIS WAY WE HAVE TO TRUST HIM. A HUGE GAMBLE ON MANNING NOW AND WE WILL HIT ROCK BOTTOM

home was wrong about grover, wilson and henne .

HOME, I will be checking through out the day. Please keep me informed on the Peyton Manning news. These sports writers dont know what the Hell is going on!

AS I RECALL P.MANNING WAS AN INTERCEPTION MACHINE LAST 2 YEARS .......

THE NECK

THE DENTIST

Archie Manning will not let his son play for an organization with a rookie coach, worthless GM, and clueless owner. I doubt they will be able to land Flynn either, unless they overpay for him. RG3 is gone now. So Matt Moore will be our starter again, better spend money on the defense and keep improving that, sign Mario Williams.

Jeff Row,
The Dolphins are the only team rumored to say they want to see Manning throw before they offer him anything. At some point Manning has to address that concern. Dolphins know they have other options. This may have upset Manning that the Dolphins are wanting him to throw but that is smart business. I believe that is why Manning is back in Miami without a contract offer. Until he throws, I believe Miami is out. If he throws then things change.

just face it dophin fans Miami doesnt want Manning! Manning had his boy reggie wayne try and convince us that if we signed Peyton Manning he would come too.. guess what .. IT DIDNT WORK MIAMI DOESNT WANT A 36 YEAR OLD BROKEN CHICKEN NECK Q/B!!!

Manning has exactly 1 day and a few hours to make that trip. If not, it's on to Flynn. Miami can't pass-up on Flynn (if that's who Philbin wants) waiting around for Peyton to jerk their chain. He either makes a move or we need to MOVE ON!

Since everyone's guessing about what's going on, here's my wager: it's over. He was in Miami and left without a meeting. What's that tell you?

PAPA YOU POST BOLOGNA.HOME DO NO SUCH POSTS ON PLAYERRS YOU SALAD.WILSON WAS ATUALLY PREDICTED BY HOME.EAT CORNFFLAKES,BE STRONG.

BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE =HOME

well... what were they supposed to say?

"yeah, we locked down so we wouldn't have to answer any embarrassing questions or look foolish at all... once another news story captures a lot of press attention and no one cares about manning not even wanting to visit us we'll start talking again"

HOME NEED TO COME ON BLOGG AND SPEAK THE LIGHTT AND THE TRUTH.PUT BLOGGERS AT EASE WITH HOME WISDOMM.

Which brings up the next little issue. Let's say we get Flynn. And he'll undoubtedly come at a high price. Then let's say Moore totally wipes the floor with him in competition for the starting position. Could Miami NOT start Flynn (and have him be an overpriced backup)? Or will Miami fall into the same trap it set for itself with Henne (giving him no "real" competition, as they already decided in their minds he'd be the starter no matter what)? How'd that work out (starting Henne)?

Things to think about. As Flynn in no HUGE upgrade over Moore, will he be worth the loot. This could turn into another Orton issue. Cleveland still needs a QB, as does Seattle. Both are reportedly interested in Flynn. Will Miami repeat 2011 in 2012? Might make the most sense (to avoid hurting the team long-term), but what does it do to IMPROVE the team. Could we be in the same position as this year (mediocrity)?

These are all concerns we need to monitor.

Matt Flynn was drafted round 7 pick 209. Just so I'm clear. You folks think he is the next Brady, Favre or Montana correct?

The reason I say that is because all the other superbowl winning QB's have been first round picks.

One game does not make a player. The only way I would sign Matt Flynn is for Matt Flynn money. There is no way I would pay him starting QB money.

WWWHHHHYY WOULD HE NOT TTTHHHHRRRROOOOOOWWWWWW.

THINK ABOUT IT.
ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.
GIVE JEFF CREDIT FOR WANTING TO SEE IF A QB COULD ACTUALLY PASS THE BALL.

I would think Salguero would have a better knowledge of the English language.

"And there IS two ways to take this approach" ??

@dolphin fan in georgia ....
100% correct ..Miami is the only smart team . all the other teams just go at it blindly... I dont think we really want him ... miami just wants to cover their bases by bringing him in. they aren't necassarly in on Manning

Hope Home is right on M2M!
Manning is what we want and need in Miami.

DC,
That was the case with Sparano. This is a new day with Philbin and Sherman. They know what a MVP QB looks like. Sparano didn't have a clue. We'll see how the Jets like the fist pumps.

Hope we get the news by tonight.
The suspense is killing me.

This team will continue to circle the drain until Ross wakes up and gets a GM that's respected throughout the league. Owners can be whacky, eccentric and say dumb stuff (if you're poor, that's called "crazy"), but the GM has to have a solid rep. Ireland is a buffoon and there is a reason why Harbaugh, Fisher and now Manning want nothing to do with Miami.

This cycle of Miami being Charlie Brown and having the football pulled away at the last second as they go to kick it (every time) won't end until Ireland and the remaining stink of Parcells has been exorcised from the organization.

Who knows, maybe at some point Dan Marino may even want to speak on the team's behalf......

@JackSparrow
WRONG!!! most of the superbowl q/b's haven't been first round picks!

I say we sign Matt flynn and trade Matt Moore for a draft pick . If they are the same Q/B's why keep Moore just so he can go to another team next year. BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT GUYS!

The starting QB of your Miami Football Dolphins is Matt Moore, which is a good thing, since he's an elite QB about to have a breakout year at age 27.

Maybe, just maybe the plan of philbin was to make it appear Mia was on the Manning bandwagon in an attempt to draw interest away from Flynn. Listening to NFL radio yesterday the league is watching Philbins interest in Flynn obviously due to his past experience with him. It is reported of teams are gun shy and if we appear to have zero interest others will shy away. We shall see, however I could see us going 0/3 with super douche Ireland at the wheel.
