Dolphins are still in Manning sweepstakes

This morning I did my usual round of texting/emailing/begging to my Dolphins and other NFL sources. And the question du jour (that means today) had to do with ESPN's constant reports that the Dolphins are down and nearly out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.

I reported to you over the weekend that Miami is in lockdown mode on the information and informed sources front. And there is two ways to take this approach.

It is either good news because it means the team is shutting down as to not hurt any possibility of getting Manning -- a possibility that still exists. Or ...

It means the club has locked down because Manning has swatted them aside like a gnat and Miami is simply trying to mask the embarrassment.

So I asked my sources if it's fair to believe lockdown mode is a sign the club is still in the game for No. 18 and doesn't want to hurt those chances.

"Fair," one source responded.

"Correct," another source responded.

There you go, folks. The Dolphins are still in the Manning sweepstakes. It is not over after Manning's trips to Denver and Arizona.

Doesn't mean the Dolphins will get Manning. But there is still hope.

Timmy Couch, saying the Dolphins can go 14 and 2 is like saying Matt Moore is a top 5 QB in the NFL, you lose all creditability with your blog posts for posting something that ignorant.

I also think Matt Moore played pretty darn well last year considering how pathetic we started the season & I think Ireland should have said as much instead of publicly saying that we NEED a franchise QB. I think everyone already knows that but you can still win a lot of games w/o one. Flacco & Alex Smith are not ELITE QB's (they're good enought) & both of those teams had/have excellent chances of making it to the SB>

CLUE........ OUR FANS ARE UNIQUE IN THEIR IGNORANCE ,THAT'S WHY ARMANDO HAS HIS LAST POST'S TITLE AS (( MANNING SWEEPSTAKES )))))))))))..........

otherwise you're just some moron...

Posted by: Craig M | March 12, 2012 at 11:48 AM

And you?? LOL Not only are you a moron, youre the biggest 1 here! All you do is mock all the "mean, never say nothing nice" fans. You need nice things said about Miami? Is your life that insignificant? Boo Hoo!

Grow a pair & act like a man you sissy ninny.

I think the consensus is that your unoriginal, sensitive & arrogant. Same thing everyday. "I'm right & youre dumb for not agreeing"

We aint here to sing Kumbya with you & kneel at your all knowing feet. Get lost!

Bottom line Matt Moore cant beat Brady. In what decade do we get a QB?

Being that Manning has played in the NFL for 14 years, I'm sure he has a completely different (and better) perspective then the fans, media, or anyone else on where he would best fit and who would give him the best chance to win.

Agreed. That ain't happening. 9-7 at best IMO if Moore is the starter for 2012. Moore could buy us a season to develop Tannenhill if Ireland doesn't pull the trigger on Flynn cause Manning ain't happening.

Arizona is NFL Heaven. That's where all Great Careers go to die. Joey Porter, Edgerrin James, Kurt Warner, Emmitt Smith, amd now Peyton Manning.

Ok, time for a little perspective (to me from me)

1. Manning seems to want to be elsewhere. Considering he was my #3 option for Miami, I can lose this without too much fuss. Good luck Peyton, wherever you go.
2. My original #1 option was RG3, and that's now off the table completely (was a long shot anyway), so we can move on from this one too. Sniff sniff.
3. My original #2 option was to skip Manning/Flynn altogether, and get Cousins/Weeden in 2nd round after taking BPA in 1st. This is probably my #1 now. Please, lets forget Flynn. Unless he comes MEGA cheap, which he won't, I don't see this as a major upgrade worthy of all our FA $$$.
4. **BUT... new option might be available. IF Manning goes to Denver, Tebow is on the block. Here is your celebrity, $$$ draw, primetime TV, media star that Mr. Ross wanted. He just might win games too. Worth a serious thought.
***YES...I'm a Tebow fan. Discuss, disagree, and insult me if you like. He does bring out the debate in everyone. I understand if this choice isn't popular, or workable with everyone. And I won't think anyone idiots for disagreeing. I can definitely see the issues and reasonable doubt.

So in my opinion, check into tebow, should PM go Denver, or draft Cousins/Weeden in the 2nd. Tannehill won't help you now without a vet to watch/learn from.
And Flynn is fools gold.

Sometimes I want to yell when I am squeezing out a rose bud.

Agreed & IMO (even as a lifelong Dolphin fan) it's not in Miami with Steven Ross, Ireland, & an unproven HC. If it were Joe Robbie & Don Shula??? That's a different story. I hope Philbin will turn out to be a great HC but that's still to be determined. Fox is a solid HC & Peyton is friends with Whisenhunt. BTW--Both of those guys have made it to SB's as HC's.....

JS, Tebow, Tim Tebow!! The guy who thorws at a 49 percent completeion pectg. Godly have mercy on you.

O.k guys friend just text me with a Chad Henne entering the building in Miami.

Boy what would be the reaction in Miami if they brought Henne back into the fold???Why would Henne be in the Miami stadium today??

You guys think Sherman and Philbin saw enough on film to think Chad should get another shot in Miami?? Now that would be one sad roller coaster of a week. I really do not think I can possibly endure another Henne year. The boy has tools but just does not seem like a winner to me. That is why I like Moore he seems like a winner.

Go Dolphins!!

Marino would be happy to consult with the Dolphins if they would only ask him. They didnt consult with him about the coaching search or if they should pursue Manning. To ask him to convince Manning would be a slap in the face. They should have been consulting with Dan and Don all year and Dan would have locked Manning up!

"Here's a better idea, wake up from the decade long nap you've been taking & come to grips with the fact that your team is a dysfunctional laughing stock."

And then come in here every day and whine because you have no life and nothing better to do. That's what you do when your team sucks. There's nothing nice to be said so instead of moving on with your life you complain a lot. Complaining helps everyone, complaining creates change. See how I and others have been complaining for a decade, look how much good it's done! They're still looking for a qb right? You're welcome. If it wasn't for us complaining who knows how many more qbs we would have went through. I'm wasting my time here, I have more complaining to do, this team needs my help.

We have draft picks u just kind of contradicted yourself. And with the Contradiction I can tell that in the end u agree that Moore is not the answer.
Also, u can't use joe flacco and Alex smith as your examples, they are literally the two best defenses and (basically) running games in the business. And Alex smith is pure awful. He threw less than a td a game and their fg kicker kicked 50 fgs....he has to be close to the worst qb In the red zone to make the playoffs. Joe flacco will never be elite but he's better than that.

With Indianapolis getting Andrew Luck
Washington Getting RG3
Denver/Arizona getting Peyton,

I feel like the poor kid at Christmas with his face pressed against the window from the outside of someone else's house watching the kid inside opening their new toys.

Matt Flynn is a fukking sweater. I don't want it, dammit

MANNING WILL NOT SIT WITH MIAMI DUE TO LACK OF INTEREST OF THE PART OF THE DOLPHINS..........

IRELAND IS DOING GOOD JOB RE THE MANNING CRAP.....

THE NECK
THE DENTIST

And Ireland has nothing to apologize for, except for being an idiot, but that's in general, I mean not to Matt Moore. Since the invention of free agency and agents player loyalty is a false sentiment no longer available. In short, he gets paid too much money to play a game to complain about Miami needing a star qb. If he wanted to complain he should've done what cam did with Carolina instead of losing every game.

btw, i still can't imagine why Manning would think Denver is a good fit, especially if he's truthful about wishing to avoid media craziness (as he claims exists in Miami). Doesn't make any sense.
Run-first coach. Media scrutiny over ousting of Tebow.
Cold weather, no-dome. No top WR. I don't get it.

Arizona makes sense, and I don't blame him at all if he picks them. Good luck, truly.

btw, .. Peyton isn't throwing for anyone. Arm fine? Proof? 27 second "leaked" video is the evidence? The more I hear the more I'm hoping this passes us by. He would've made a great regent, but not a savior, and certainly not future king.

Draft a QB, or go get Tebow (if avail).

SHULA71...... FOR HENNE TO RETURN WITH DOLPHINS ,THEY NEED TO PAY HIM NEAR 7 MILLION A YEAR ......LIKE THE RED SKINS OR KC ......

Mark in Toronto.....I have to say, that post, THAT one, was a good one. Flynn is a personally knitted sweater from my aunt, no less.

I don't post very often but here are my thoughts...sign kyle orton(had good year with chiefs) draft weeden or tanneyhill and let orton and moore battle for the QB position...I know weedens 28 but roger staubach was 29 when dallas got him from the navy...Draft Ingram in the first weeden in the second...OL in the 3rd....TE in the 4th...S in the 5th...cb in the 6th and OL in the 7th

*are two ways, not "is two ways"...seriously dude...

Tebow in a west coast offense that requires accruacy would be good for comedic relief. That is one way to ensure that we would pick first in 2013.

Stephen Brown, your best bet is to never post here again, with your ridiclous thoughts.

Armando there's still hope? You mean still hope the guy who still needs arthroscopic surgery at the least, is at 75% last time we heard with no way of knowing if he can recover fully, won't throw for any teams who have to pay him 15 to 18 million to possibly sit the bench, still hope he's coming to the team?

Surely I misread your story. You must have meant still hope some other sucker signs him? Please tell me that's what Armando meant! He won't throw the freaking ball for anyone! When is the last time a free agent was signed to a multi million dollar contract without a workout? This is utterly ridiculous!

JS_in_LA - I think Tebow is going to have to learn to complete more than 35% of his throws in a hurry. My guess is that he will be exposed this coming season. I'm not a Tebow hater by any means, but there were a lot of reasons beyond Tebow, as to why/how Denver won those games.

Completing sub 50% of your throws will ultimately not work when you're talking about winning in the NFL....not in the long haul that is.

I agree that he would most likely give Ross his celebrity...but that's about it. I think he would struggle mightily in a WC style offense. Denver completely taylored that offense around him and I don't see too many willing to do that. Even the reports out of Denver are saying that he's going to have to learn a more traditional offense this season as last years approach is completely unsustainable.

Flynn is another Kolb.... just ask Arizona how well that worked out.... $$$ oh yes he light up the NFL!!! NOT!! you Miami so called fans have no clue but get sold on names quick, here is a recap of just a few of the names YOU ALL WANTED DOWN HERE and be honest!!!: Kyle Orton, just last season.... oh yes, wonderful!! amazing QB, NOT, Brady Quinn, I think he is working for Dunkin Donughts in Denver!!, Kolb, just ask Arizona how well that worked out, Vince Young, did wonders in Philadelphia as a backup NOT!!.... you should be praying that Manning comes down here BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS HE THE BEST QB WE HAVE EVER HAD (YES INCLUDING DAN MARINO) BUT HE WILL DRAW GREAT FREE AGENCY PLAYERS AS WELL..... NO ONE WANTS TO SIGN WITH A MEDIOCRE TEAM!!!.... WITH MEDIOCRE MANAGEMENT AND BAD OWNERSHIP...... !!! DOLPHINS HAVE BECOME THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE NFL!! PARTLY THANKS TO YOU THE FANS!! GREAT JOB

Hey Mando,

Get better sources. Next up...Matt Flynn. Although Ross & Ireland are clueless my hope is that they listen to Philbin on this one. We're talking about a Coach who knows Flynn better than anyone else in the entire league.

Yes, Larry.
Tebow. 7-4 regular season record, plus one playoff victory, and a 2:1 TD/Int ratio. Yes, that guy.
The darling of Florida, and media and money magnet. Ross would be stupid not to consider him.
But again, I really doubt PM ends up in Denver.
But I am prepared to eat my hat nonetheless.

We suck as a franchise and forever will, Im with aloco, maybe its just inevitable we belongin the cellar

If you want Tebow on this team you are a blind loyalist who has know sense of the real world. Just because Timmy smiles big at you and won a national championship for your fav college team doesn't mean he's a superstar. As the other poster pointed out if he didn't have a great defense and the best kicker in the game (who bailed him 3 times because he can't throw the ball into the endzone with any accuracy) no one would be talking about Tebow except to question who would be replacing him. The kid is God awful at the qb position. Lots of heart, great kid, runs great, says all of the right things, is not and will never be a top 15 QB.

I must say that Stephen Brown's option makes a lot of sense ... a vet like Orton or Campbell to compete with Moore and a Weeden or Tannehill in the draft may be making the best of what has been another clusterfukk of an offseason in regards to the qb position.

Miami Dolphins, celebrating 15 years of QB avoidance ...

How's that for a new standard of excellence?

And inimounts, that sweater has a reindeer right in the middle of it .. may even have a bell embroidered into it so everyone can hear you coming.

Tim Tebow is going Jacksonville his home town. They can have him.

Manning not wanting to talk to Miami speaks volumes about this organization!!

It is all very disheartening!

Should have known that when Marino said he wouldn't recruit Manning, he already knew Manning wasn't coming to Miami....

Mark And Stephen wants to be stuck in medicracy. Both of you must be Ireland homers because that acorn thinking gets us no where.

YOU GUYS NEED TO START PLAYING CONNECT THE DOTS OR SIX DEGREES OF KEVIN BACON...IT'S GONNA BE MATT FLYNN.....WHY DO YOU THINK BRANDON MARSHALL HASN'T MENTION PEYTON....WHY DO YOU THINK BRANDON TALK TO FLYNN BY PHONE IN THE PROBOWL..JENNINGS GAVE HIM HIS NUMBER...WHY DO YOU THINK THE FINS HAVE BEEN VERY QUIET ABOUT MANNING ...CAUSE THEY'RE WAITING FOR TUESDAY TO START..WHY DO YOU THINK MANNING IS GONNA WAIT TILL LATER IN THE WEEK TO ANNOUCE HIS CHOICE..CAUSE HE'S WAITING FOR THE CARDINALS TO CUT PLAYERS..WHY DO YOU THINK REGGIE WAYNE WAS NOT AS EXCITED TALKING ABOUT IT LIKE HE WAS ON THE IRVIN SHOW HE. KEPT SAYING ASK PEYTON..ASK PEYTON..CAUSE HE WAS TOLD BY PEYTON LATER IN THE DAY HE NOW KNOWS HE'S NOT COMMING HERE.GET IT JAY FIEDLER AJAY FEELEY..CHAD HENNE CHAD PENNIGHTON...MATT MOORE MATT FLYNN...

Manning is not coming to Miami because his wife Olivia knows the Miamians groupies will be lined to to swallow Manning

Why so down on Ross? Denver have been mediocre in the post Elway period and plain f#cking awful in the post Shanahan period. The Tebow miracle? More like Manning being a miraculous excuse to dump him!

Flynn advocates:
Ask ourselves what to make of Philbin's declaration that we doesn't believe in bringing in high-profile FA's to fill top positions. It was obvious Manning is a freak circumstance, and I'm still not sure he's into that. So why would he assume Flynn is the answer, when he's on record promoting the opposite?
Philbin didn't draft Flynn (the GM did, with probable HC approval). So what makes him Philbins guy other than he knows the playbook?
But I've been wrong before. So who knows. But I don't get the vibe that Philbin is hot after FLynn.
We'll see for ourselves tomorrow, I guess.

Mark in Toronto, couldn't have said it any better. Kinda like a lump of coal in our Christmas stocking.

After they started 0-7 last year, the Dolphins were in a perfect position to get one of the top two picks in this draft.

They could have put Jake Long on IR since he was clearly battling some injuries even at that point. They could have benched starters and played rookies. They could have even cut a few players to make a point that 0-7 was not acceptable. They would still be playing to win, just not with the overpriced and overhyped starters that were responsible for the 0-7 start.

Instead, the Dolphins won some meaningless games against some weak teams. The one strong team they played, New England, showed that the Dolphins were, well, the same old Dolphins who could not perform even with a 17 point cushion. For good measure, Jake Long hurt his back, then tore his bicep.

Oh, and the Dolphins pick 8th and many say that yet another OL or DL needs to be picked. After all the Giants have a good pass rush. The Giants also have a very skilled QB. Duh.

The Colts are going to get Luck. Washington traded a lot to get RGIII. Even if Barkley had entered the draft, the asking price would have been just as high as RGIII. Elite QB prospects are expensive and will remain so. Even next year.

So, the Dolphins are hoping, begging, and going into a "lock down" to get Manning who has been their number one target for months now.

Also, we find that the Dolphins are only 15 million under the cap with a team that has gone 7-9, 7-9, and 6-10 over the past three seasons. What have they been spending thier money on exactly? We know they have invested massively in the OL, inside linebackers, and a wide receiver. The OL was horrible last year, the inside linebackers didn't play that great, and the WR led the league in drops.

We also know that the Dolphins over-invest in RB (Williams, Brown, Bush, and the one that never played last year) and under-invest in QB (list of over a dozen). Other teams find RB's as undrafted college free agents. The Dolphins trade up to get them. What's wrong with this picture?

We have and are told by everyone from Wanny to Ireland that the Dolphins are "close" to winning championships. I did not believe Wanny. I don't believe Ireland. The Ravens are close. The Texans are close.

The Dolphins lack (at least) a QB, WR, TE, 2 OL, 2 DL, OLB, CB, and FS. What's more, they lack a true management team with a strong leader with a good plan. We are in year 5 of the Parcells/Ireland rebuild. This is crazy.

We celebrate the Pennington year but rarely mention how he performed when it mattered in the playoffs against elite competition. Of course, that was one of the only two decent years this teams has had in the past couple of DECADES.

The Colts and Rams will probably exceed the Dolphins within two years. They took risks. The Dolphins play it safe. It shows.

Actually I was happy when you said we were out of the running so I checked Hydes tweets and he has since corrected himself. It was a mistake, Peyton has already seen the Dolphins facilities and will be contacting the Dolphins by phone.

But there's no chance Miami gets him now. Seems like the phone call is a courtesy.

Love all of the fans saying we're the laughing stock again. Because we may not sign an over the hill qb who can't throw a ball? Hmmmmmmm, yeah, I bet all of the teams in the NFL and fans are laughing at us and will be clapping for whichever team pays him 18 million without knowing if he will ever play. Bwaaahahahahahaha stupid Dolphins.

Guys it's only your 15 year old to 21 year old friends who behave this way. If they are older than that and still make fun of you for what a team you root for does in the NFL then they are obviously very pathetic and living vicariously through someone else's life. Why in the hell do you care what anyone else thinks, you don't play for the Miami Dolphins!

AND WHY DO YOU THINK AARON RODGERS CAME OUT TO SAY THAT FLYNN IS A TOP TEN QB!

Clue, what part of my post don't you like?...kyle orton i guess...orton was 2-1 with kc and beat the packers in dec when they were unbeaten and his old team denver in the season finale...last year we were screaming for orton...he has good career stats and qb rating good td's to ints ratio and would give us a good qb to go with moore and weeden for compstition

We Have Draft Picks,
Hyde corrected himself saying Dolphin source confirms Peyton Manning is still considered a viable option for team - "We're not out of it," source said

I'm sorry but the Dolphins should not commit to Peyton until they see him throw. Go with Matt Moore and find a backup. Not Flynn because he wants to start. Flynn hopes to be a top 15 NFL QB. Moore was number the 12th rated QB in the NFL with the 30th rated OL. Count the blessings that Peyton may not become a Dolphin......go out and build through the draft.

I hope not! We don't want or need him!

Omar posted we are officaly out of running, let the real talk begin. Moore is starter, kolb as backup if Denver, no Tebow!!Use money and draft picks to improve the plethera of weak spots.

Well Moore better start warming up his arm, looks like he will be after all this BS the starter. Not complaining mind you. I do not realy think he will be our franchise QB, but for now it looks like he is our man. He was not that bad last season, all considered he did damn good. Does he have more? well looks like we will find out. I agree with one other blogger, Flynn does not seem to fit Philbins criteria. He is a draft guy, not an FA guy. However, that does clash with Ireland who is an FA guy. we will have to see how this all pans out. As for now, Im settled in on Moore starting.

LAST TIME DOLPINS PICK AT #9 THEY GOT THE GREAT TED GINN.,MAYBE LIGHNING WILL STRIKE TWICE.

I'm not going to try and convince anyway that Tebow is great. Everyone loves or hates him, and with fair reasons for both. Nobody is on the fence.
*He's the greatest thing to QBing since the forward pass!
*He's a crappy QB and will never ever be great.

Absloutes, extremes. Whatever. He was a second year young QB learning the league, finding his way, doing the best he can, and managed to win some significant games and help his team along the way. That's it. No absolutes needed yet, folks.
I'm an unabashed fan who believes in his abilities and and watched every game he played at UF, and many games he played at Denver. He wins wherever he goes, and overcomes adversity, and even his own flaws. I'd rathe rhave that guy on my team, than many others.
But, believe as you will.
The haters and absolutists may be right in the end. But I'd prefer to find out rather than declare him one way or the other. And if he could do for the Fins what he did for Denver - you telling me that isn't worth a consideration?
To each their own.
I still don't think it will happen. Tebow stays in Denver.

"One factor apparently hurting the Dolphins is the fact they have no high-level coach or executive who has a longstanding relationship with Manning. By contrast, Manning has a good relationship with Broncos coach John Fox and executive John Elway and Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt. So far, Denver and Arizona are the only teams that he has visited." AP WIRE

Seriously?! f**K THIS GUY! What a freaking baby he is. No wonder Indi only won one super bowl with arguably the greatest qb of all time. He has no killer instinct! Needs to be loved and coddled.

Which is why he wasn't able to sleep the whole week leading up to games with Eli. It is reported that it always weighed heavily on him. Eli? SLEEPING LIKE A F***ING BABY! And now has two rings with more probably on the way.

Once again f**k this guy. Oh yeah and he's "exhausted" from his trip out west which included private planes, fancy food, the best hotels, limos, etc. DUDE YOU HAVEN'T WORKED IN OVER A YEAR!!!!! EXHAUSTED!!!!?????

Guys,
Dolphins are back in the bidding. Money always talks. Peyton is trying to keep the Miami area from becoming a circus. Dolphins playing low key out of respect of Manning.

Love all of the fans saying we're the laughing stock again. Because we may not sign an over the hill qb who can't throw a ball?

Posted by: Phins78 | March 12, 2012 at 01:18 PM

No, it's because we may not sign an overhill qb who can't throw a ball. It's because that over the hill, can't throw a ball qb won't even talk to us! And he lives here!

Seriously, is it that hard to figure out? If we were such a prize, he'd at least visit! Instead he goes to Arizona? Why is it so hard to acknowledge how far this franchise has sunk? If you REALLY look at it, it's right there staring you in the face.

To ignore the reality shows how dumb the Miami fans are.

Phins78,

we're a laughing stock but two badly-run, desperate teams- Broncos & Redskins- are to be envied for frantically pulling down their pants!

GA wehre did you see that, Omar aleady posted we r offically out!

Aloco,

no lightning- we're picking at #8.
