This morning I did my usual round of texting/emailing/begging to my Dolphins and other NFL sources. And the question du jour (that means today) had to do with ESPN's constant reports that the Dolphins are down and nearly out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.
I reported to you over the weekend that Miami is in lockdown mode on the information and informed sources front. And there is two ways to take this approach.
It is either good news because it means the team is shutting down as to not hurt any possibility of getting Manning -- a possibility that still exists. Or ...
It means the club has locked down because Manning has swatted them aside like a gnat and Miami is simply trying to mask the embarrassment.
So I asked my sources if it's fair to believe lockdown mode is a sign the club is still in the game for No. 18 and doesn't want to hurt those chances.
"Fair," one source responded.
"Correct," another source responded.
There you go, folks. The Dolphins are still in the Manning sweepstakes. It is not over after Manning's trips to Denver and Arizona.
Doesn't mean the Dolphins will get Manning. But there is still hope.

JS_in_LA, I hear you...
Of what I said, I care least about re-signing Henne. I threw that out there because I believe he's a better alternative as back-up than, say, Losman, for example.
I also agree that RT would best be addressed in FA and would like to see our 1st & 2nd rounds used on impact players.

This franchise SUCKS. Move this garbage team to L.A.

Just so I'm clear. Matt Flynn of GB would be the same Matt Flynn in Miami using Miami's players? Are we saying I can just transplant Matt Flynn into any system and he is a future HOF'er?
LOL!!!! So GB's roster is full of scrubs that Flynn turned into superstars in one game? I'd take GB's water boys over our first team.

You guys can bash the Dolphins all you want to but you can't say Ross is not a fighter for his team. He swings for the fences maybe he will end up hitting a homerun before this is all said and done.

When you are saying you don't care about something, as if you REALLY don't care about it,,,the saying is " I COULDN'T care less". Not,,, "I could care less". I could care less means you actually care a little and have more room , more to drop before you don't care at all.
Saying I couldn't care less means you really don't care at all.
I could care less is not a saying.
I COULDN'T care less is a saying.
I realize most of you COULDN'T care less about this but some of you will be happy to know the difference.
While we're at it, it's not supposebly it's supposeDly.

Anyone read why Miami lost out on Drew Brees? In his book Drew Brees says he wanted to come to Miami. He says the Dolphin doctors decided to probe and prod him like he was a piece of beef. He was humiliated and decided it wasn't a place he wanted to go and signed with New Orleans the next day.
Posted by: No Balls | March 12, 2012 at 02:20 PM
They won't hire Peyton Manning sight unseen but hire Flynn sight (basically) unseen. ONE GAME does not make the next Brady. Heck, I'd rehire Sage Rosenfels before I hired Flynn.

Well it looks like Manning is passing on us as did Harbaugh and Fisher.....now all the attention is on Matt Flynn. What if he passes on the Dolphins as well? Not having to much of a warm fuzzy with the Ross/Ireland lead Dolphins, seem to be striking out on everything lately. This was once a great franchise, mentioned with in the same sentence as the Steelers, Cowboys....hell now we are the laughing stock of the NFL. One playoff appearance in ten years....ugh. So now no Manning, another slap in the face, I hope for Ross's sake he gets Flynn that would really put a nail in the coffin.

Blog fodder,
We have Devlin who isn't ready for prime-time, but is slated as back-up anyway - so suits him. And we draft a young buck, who will start at #2, and will displace Moore eventually, hopefully this year. So #2 covered. No need for any FA QB.
Only way we need a FA #2 is if we skip out on drafting a QB.
I read we have 10.2 mill at the moment to spend, if no contracts are re-negotiated. but they do plan to redo some contracts. Sounds like draft is going to be the majority of our improvements.
Posted by: JS_in_LA | March 12, 2012 at 02:26 PM
Dolphins won't even get a visit from Manning, he knows how pathetic the franchise has become without even seing it firsthand. Dolphins will then sign Flynn (and significantly overpay him), then draft OT with their first round pick, then pick some QB who will never be better than 3rd string with their 2nd round pick. Next year's record 6-10, the mediocrity will never end with this franchise.
Posted by: wu1sabes | March 12, 2012 at 02:27 PM
Interesting that Manning is now going to take a trip to Tennessee in the next day or two and we can't get him to visit our team headquarters a 45 minute drive away.
What is even more interesting is Manning may not make up his mind by the start of free-agency.
This really puts Miami in a bind. Seattle and Cleveland are expected to go hard at Matt Flynn. Will Miami even be able to if they are still waiting for Manning's decision?
Posted by: No Balls | March 12, 2012 at 02:28 PM
Phins78, Ive lost all repect for you when you said Ireland has done a decent job. Do you know what the Dolphins record have been since he's taking over as GM? Should I post this? There no way Ireland has done a decent job and you should be a shame youve posted this.
Posted by: Clue | March 12, 2012 at 02:29 PM
If you care, read Volin's very helpful article yesterday in the PBP, where he published the maximum amount the League permits this year for each individual position. I believe DT is around 7.5 mill. Now we can decide if Big Paul is worthy of that amount, or not. Yes?
Posted by: oscar canosa | March 12, 2012 at 02:29 PM
Stephen Brown, again you best bet is to not post again. Orton isnt the answer to anything unless you want another dink and donk offense, that will eventually get you no where. If we didnt trade for this scrub why would we sign the scrub.
Posted by: Clue | March 12, 2012 at 02:30 PM
No Balls that is completely false. Nice try though. Miami never made Brees an offer because Miamis doctors felt his shoulder injury was more concerning then Culpeppers knee. Therefore Miami didn't even extend an offer, Brees never had a chance to turn them down.
Miamis medical staff was fired the season after.
Seriously I don't know why people make things up in here knowing there are a ton of fans who can call you out.
Posted by: Phins78 | March 12, 2012 at 02:30 PM
The fact is no one has a clue what Manning is going to do. Peyton probally has no clue himself. Sounds like he is waiting for the Texans to jump in. If they do, that might open a door to get Schaub.

I never said he did a decent job. There's another misquote. I said he's done some good as well as bad. Are you denying that? Are you saying Dansby,Wake,Bush, Clay,Pouncey, and Marshall were bad signings? They were good signings correct? So that would make that the good part of his job right? The bad woud be the prostitute thing, not building a competitive o-line, not getting a TE.
Am I missing something? And when did the teams success hinge directly on what the gm does while ignoring every other part of the organization that is responsible for wins and losses?
Wow, so now coaches all over the league should be ecstatic! If they don't win they can just say it's the GMs fault right?

Sheesh, reading comprehension is not a strong suit in the Herald blog these days.

I have to admit, I was on the Manning bandwagon at first, and part of me still would love to see him here in Miami. But if we just take a step back...take a breath...look at the system Philbon wants to install...West Coast. Moore can play in this system. I trust his head, he can read defenses pretty well. What he does not have is a cannon of an arm, ironically, which is exacty what Henne has, but he can't read defenses, (sigh). Anyway, have those two compete, Moore will probably win out; draft Moore out of Boise. He is a winner. If Henne is disgruntled, then trade him if he loses out for a 5th or 6th...possibly 4th. Use free agency money...for Mario Williams...c'mon: Wake on one side...Williams on the other = Brady and Sanchez not sleeping so good. Draft early and smartly for that right side of our line. I don't care if Marino or Griese put the cleats back on, they would be horrible with the line we have.

Right now I have a 90% gut feeling Manning isnt coming to Miami. The worst part is I have a 100% gut feeling he would rather play in Miami than Denver or Arizona.
I also have a 100% gut feeling the greatest deciding factor in not coming is the Ross/Ireland circus alone.
Remember, Peyton has a condo here, so Im sure he's been reading and listening to all the media reports of what has become a true three ring circus in Miami. Over the past 4 yrs at least. Denver and Arizona are both more sound organizations for Peyton to take his talents to, over coming to South Beach.
Gee, thx Ross/Ireland. You've all but completely destroyed Miami Dolphins football.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 12, 2012 at 02:46 PM
no balls I am not spending one cent on a book written by a football player. But did you or did you find an excerpt online? If you did let me know where I can read it because I would like to see that part.
Or if you have the book just write a couple of paragraphs in his exact words and quote them so we can all see what you're saying.
Either way those doctors are long gone by now, those were the huzienga days.
Posted by: Phins78 | March 12, 2012 at 02:46 PM
Henne will cost too much to sign, ook out there, talking 5-7 million a year for him. Do not sign him. Out with the old in with the new.
Posted by: ctphins | March 12, 2012 at 02:47 PM
Phins78, Dansby is overpaid at the LB spot, and doesnt produce like the highest paid LB in the NFL, did he make the pro bowl this year? NO!, I'll give you Wake a good find, Bush as well, dont overstate Clay please he's a hybrid type of player, what hybrid player made a great imapct on a team? Pouncey was a first round draft pick as a C YAWN... Plus he's not better than his brother. Marshall is paid like the best WR in the game which he isnt. So No to your answer were they good all good signings.
In short you're missing something its called your brain.
Simple as this if you hire a head coach and a gm at the same time, if the coach go so should the GM, Ireland should be blamed just as much as Sparano for this pathetic team.

Why would Manning publicly visit the Broncos and Cardinals and now reportedly the Titans yet he won't publicly visit the Dolphins?
This seems silly.
It's not like we don't know the Dolphins don't have some interest in Manning.
Posted by: No Balls | March 12, 2012 at 02:49 PM
Phins78,
You're correct, Ireland has done some good. Problem is, for every good(1 step foward), he makes a catastrophic bad(2 steps backward).
This team is still facing some of the same problems it was facing in 2008 when the Parcellians came to power. Some issues are still to be correctly addressed. Heck, 4yrs later instead of being a rock solid playoff team as we should be, we're beginning a brand new head coaching situation.
Like I said, 1 step forward, 2 backwards. Where we sit now is conclussive proof of this.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 12, 2012 at 02:51 PM
A monkey flipping a coin would probably have out done Ireland on his decisions.

Question: Something the name Poizen will never be referred to. :)
Posted by: Poizen | March 12, 2012 at 02:55 PM
Finfans Greatest Hope:
In 3-4yrs when the current hc(Philbin) is fired. Hopefully Ireland's shown the door too.
Then hopefully all the wear and tear of unsuccessfulness forces Ross to sell the franchise to an ownership that really has a clue.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 12, 2012 at 02:55 PM
I am resigned to the possible fact, we will suck until both Ireland and Ross are gone. Hold on dolfans its going to be a very bumpy ride until then!
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 12, 2012 at 02:57 PM
YG, that means you think giving Ireland, 7 or 8 years of builiding a team is a good thing. If we arent much improved after this coming season, Ireland needs to be fired.

Posted by: Empty Stadium | March 12, 2012 at 02:58 PM
That's a weird thing to hope for.
Posted by: wolfman13 | March 12, 2012 at 02:58 PM
Agree Yesterday's Gone. After 4 years of Parcells/Ireland this should be a rock-solid playoff team.
Instead, we have a rookie head coach, still looking for a franchise QB and still have not fixed the OL despite investing more money, draft picks and free-agency in it then any other position.
What's even worse, despite not having a ton of studs or great players, our salary cap situation isn't great.
What does that mean? We have spent a ton of money on underperforming players or contracts. Who do we blame for this?
JEFF IRELAND.

i think the dolphins brass finally got it right. manning only has ONE superbowl, and now injured, the odds of him winning another are slim to none. miami can get the same results, if not better by signing flynn and beefing up the offense, some say that flynn looked every bit as good as rodgers because of the immense talent greenbay has at reciever... dah.. sounds like a no brainer, and just maybe, this will be the case, maybe miami has every intention to sign flynn and surround him with big name quality recievers. imagine that. after years of inept offense the voice of the fans is finally responded to, miami brings the thrills of a high powered air assault to south florida, bringing the fans out in droves, stars like MIKE WALLACE and this years top reciever in the draft join the likes of brandon marshall and reggie bush giving us the ability to compete if not all out win against the other high scoring offenses of the pats, packers, eagles...i really hope this is such the case, for the past decade miami has been a low scoring team, unable to make a big play with any kind of consistancy, we read and write about this perrineal problem after every game, after every season, right here on this blog, even if the defense has played a good game, the offense seemed unable to score enough points. maybe this time ross gives the offense the weopons at reciever we've been lacking, maybe this season miami actually has the advantage in the passing game. every year you hear how the eagles, cowboys, packers are favored to win their division if not the superbowl, maybe, just maybe, miami gives the writers something to talk about, the fans, something to see, justifying the money they will spend on tickets with merit and hope because the quality at reciever, players and team suggest that miami should win the game they will be attending. Ross would be a fool to ignore the fans desire for offensive fireworks, let the colts wheelchair show of manning and wayne roll into to some other town, give us a valid, if not down right scary and dominating multiple reciever set, and make the other teams worry about defending us.
Posted by: budtki | March 12, 2012 at 03:00 PM
Budtk >>> You may be right on Manning, but my guess is Ross and Ireland are on their hands and knees begging Manning to even give them the time of day. Pathetic!
Posted by: No Balls | March 12, 2012 at 03:02 PM
No, YG, the deciding factor if Manning does not come to Miami, are, Fans, like you, and the Media, which of course is a reflection of the fans here in Miami. How bout that!
Posted by: oscar canosa | March 12, 2012 at 03:02 PM
Ahhhhhh Clue, Come on now. Why can't you talk to someone without insulting them. People have differences in opinion, no need to question my intelligence because you don't agree with me.
You picked apart most every player I pointed out (by the way, Hernandez is a pretty damn good hybrid player for New England wouldn't you say? How about Hillis? another great hybrid, Clay has the hands and the quickness and as soon as he got healthy he was a beast!) I don't care if Dansby is over paid, sometimes you have to overpay to get your guy, you should know this. My point that you glossed over again was that he HAS done some good and bad and by agreeing that certain players were good signings you agreed with my assessment of Ireland. Thank you for agreeing with me! :)
Posted by: Phins78 | March 12, 2012 at 03:02 PM
Yeah Oscar, I am sure Peyton Manning is reading this blog because he has nothing better to do with his time!
What is more likely:
(1) Peyton reads the Dolphins blogs and decides he doesn't want to come to Miami cause of a few negative posters.
(2) Manning heard Jeff Ireland is a creep and the Miami Dolphins are a poorly run organization and he is better off bringing his talents to a more stable organization with a better chance to win now.
Posted by: No Balls | March 12, 2012 at 03:04 PM
Kris, no, say it isn't so!
As I happen to trust the opinions of journalists (and media in general) who get paid to investigate and track down information (you know, talk to sources close to the subject) over posters who form their views through the ether or their own imagination, I have to say I'm probably not going to lose any sleep over it.

Phins78, Your right I shouldnt insult anyone, from now I refuse to insult any other blogger on here. Hernandez is a TE period, Hillis is a crybaby who had one good season. The point in ireland should of been shown the door with Sparano but since Ross doesnt know any football people, were stuck with "Is yo mamma a hooker" GM
