Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting

Matt Flynn is scheduled to visit the Miami Dolphins in the next two days, a club source is saying at this hour.

Two things: This is the clearest and most obvious sign the Dolphins are done in the Peyton Manning chase. They will not get Manning.

And if you don't believe it, I point you to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who has been the most accurate and timely reporter on the Peyton Manning story.

Mort, on NFL32 just now, said "at least three teams are still alive" in the chase for the free agent quarterback. He mentioned Arizona. He mentioned Denver. He mentioned Tennessee.

He did not mention Miami.

And as if to drive home the point, Mortensen added "you notice we did not mention the Miami Dolphins."

Yes, we noticed.

So if ESPN is reporting three teams are still alive and the Dolphins are obviously moving on with a Flynn visit, what we have here is a pivot from the team -- Manning and Plan A to Flynn and Plan B.

Surprised? I'm not. I've you've been reading the posts the past two days, the vibe you should have gotten is that Manning was inching steadily away from Miami based on his actions, recent visit, and uncovering of what he's most looking for -- relationship he is comfortable with.

What does this mean going forward? I'm not going to rip the team for missing out on Manning, assuming that is exactly as it plays out. Look, they took a shot. The got closer than say, Kansas City or Seattle.

The sun will rise in the east tomorrow.

The fact Miami couldn't close is, well, kind of become the norm around here. So whatev.

But it is imperative for Miami to land someone to compete for the starting QB job next year. And Flynn is as good a candidate as most, I guess.

Might he become another Kevin Kolb or A.J. Feeley? I suppose that is possible. I worry about that. I assume the Dolphins worry about that. But the fact is he will come to the Dolphins and get a chance to play under a familiar system, for a familiar head coach who was his offensive coordinator the past few years is a comfort.

Having said that, I am hoping the Dolphins protect themselves. It makes zero sense giving Flynn a big contract -- with big contract being defined as high starter money in the $9-$10 million a year range. The truth is the Dolphins balked at giving Kyle Orton this type of deal last year so why give it to someone who is less proven?

It doesn't.

I hope the Dolphins proceed wisely. But I hope they do so with alacrity. Time is wasting.

We sign Flynn to compete with Moore at about the same price we signed Moore.
We draft the best so called 2nd tier QB available, Tannehill, Cousins, Osweiller, or Weedon.
We need two QBs capable of starting in the NFL to start the season.
Always remember Marino was the 5th QB taken in his draft, Montana was a 3rd Rd pick and Brady was a 6th and a backup to Griese (Brian).
Be patient, things could be much worse.
Safety and an OL in FA would make things much better, so far so good.

Why the long faces, brothers and sisters?

Broncos
Cardinals
Titans

two of these teams will be whining more desperately than the whiniest poster here, and the third will be taken to the cleaners by "mr. aw shucks" and his predatory agent.

Armando, great points. I'd rather have Orton then Flynn. Flynn had just ONE good game.

the waiting what if circus game is done!! manning is playing this game without even throwing a football!! its great that he is the most overly prepared QB to ever play the game! but the truth is that he could be one play from ending his career! go after flynn and make an impact with a WR in the draft or FA before the draft (like wallace)!! PHILBIN has got a plan and i think that if the fins play competatively this season, a new GM might be brought in to give this team some integrity!! ross needs to figure this out, that he has to quit listening to ireland so much!! not to mention moore is a better QB that has been screwed by the media this entire offseason as well as by the team!!!!

Kevin Burnett is injured

I'm guessing the motto for next season will be BARF FOR BARKLEY.

Geeez....get over it. One good hit and Manning is done. We need "great" receivers and a decent QB. It's time to move on. Meanwhile, I hope the people of Miami show respect to Manning whenever he travels to S. FL on vacation! (hint hint)

How many teams spend millions in free agency and end up winning the SB? None. How many huge contracts do the Pittsburgh Steelers hand out to free agents? The Packers? The Baltimore Ravens? That's not the way you win folks...Free agency is for adding good depth...You don't build your roster with free agency. If that would be the way to do it, Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones would win the SB every friggin year...You have to draft well and add depth in free agency...That's why we shouldn't panic just yet...Free agency just started and the draft is a month away...

We have to turn to FA because Ireland is terrible at drafting.

I hope he recovers for the start of the season

hmmmmm.let s see.Flynn is available...maybe.Tannehill is better?i doubt it.RG3 is going to washington.Boom.that s it.or stick with Moore.Do ya want Orton?Hope not.The cupboard got bare pretty quick.

Tigre, what's wrong with Burnett?

Jake Long is injured too.

I don't care of they sign Flynn but they still better draft a QB. They need to sign a QB and draft a QB EVERY year unti they get it right.

Joe - Orton signed with Dallas already.

Odin,

Eagles guard Evan Mathis was listed #24 on PFT's hot 100 FA list.

Thanks Rick!

Settle down people. This is not life or death its just football and entertainment. The facts are not all in yet. Free agency is still going, the draft is still there for talent to materialize. As all loyal Dolfans we should try and support our team and management not pull apart every move they make. The Flynn\Moore comb may not be sexy but could prove to effective. I would bet if they produce any type of winning record I would be reading posts by the know it alls that suddenly jump back on the bandwagon.
Patience people!! one good draft and free agency signing gets us back in the hunt for the holy grail.

The glass really is half full!!

Dolfan Jack in Toronto bleeding aqua and orange.

Should I dare say we would be in a MUCH better spot if we hadnt tried to win 6 games after the horrible start we had? We still fired Sparano, we could have had the #1 or 2 draft spot and Luck or RG3 without giving away the house.. I understand winning but when winning means no playoff chance, put in the young guys and lets see what talents we can uncover for the following year and dont worry about winning...its not rocket science...Indy tnked on purpose it was obvious....

Fatty you are absolutely correct..the most important position has been ignored far too long in MIA....they just don't get it

If the Dolphins are out of Manning's game, as it seemed from the very beginning, this talks very badly about this guy's ethics. Why doesn't he say it at loud, for God's sake ? He's been fooling around with teams and the fans.
I hope that the Dolphins plays against him and kick his ass, or...the neck maybe.
I don't care if the Dolphins draft Flynn provided next year they select the best QB available in 1st rnd draft 2013 or do everything they can to land the best prospect QB, as the redskins did. Yes I'm dreaming, why not. I cannot change of team, I've been a fan for 40 years. Changing would be like trying to drain your own blood.

These scrubs will be lucky to win 5 games next season.

I'm not sure he went on crutches, and resent signed a LB from the Jets Jamaal Westerman

David that's right...a lot of bloggers wanted to win games last year...well we did and this was what we predicted. Not a surprise to me that's what was asked for.. I said loose them all..we woulda been at 1 or 2 spot sitting pretty...but nooooooo

David C - spot on. One season like Indy had can change a franchise forever. Those meaningless wins in November and December hurt the Dolphins more than they helped. I just don't think the Dolphins were ever as bad as their 0-7 start showed so they were bound to win a few. I just can't believe Indy goes from Manning to Luck. I hope he is terrible. Teams that go 7-9 or 8-8 every year stay there for a reason because they are always picking between 13 and 20 in the draft - can't get any gamebreakers.

We haven't heard a peep from the Dolphins about a WR since losing out on Robinson.

We have to get a veteran either through free agency or a trade....don't we??

Posted by: Dolfan Rick | March 15, 2012 at 08:45 PM

No we don't. The WR position is very DEEP in this draft, so you shouldn't be surprised by what's happening.

We would've gotten Luck if Henne didnt get injured.

Yeah, Ireland can find us another Patrick Turner.

HMM................................................

EXACTLY LIKE I POSTED IN THE LAST BLOG. NO #1 WR TO THROW AND MANNING WOULD HAVE HAD TO FACE MARIO WILLIAMS TWICE A YEAR. DO YOU GUYS THINK PEYTON WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

TWO CATASTROPHIC THINGS IN TWO DAYS HAPPENS TO MIAMI. MARSHALL'S GONE(NO #1 WR FOR PEYTON TO THROW TOO) AND MARIO WILLIAMS MOVES TO THE AFC EAST. PEYTON AINT STUPID. HE ISNT LOOKING TO GET HIS NECK REBROKEN SO SOON.

I wouldn't mind the Dolphins signing Lloyd...At a reasonable price...Him and Malcolm Floyd would upgrade our WR position...

How many letdowns can one fan base experience? Of course Manning was never in the cards, he doesn't beat up women or have a sex addiction. What did they think he would do? By waiting for what they should have known, they missed out on all the choice free agents. Someone should get a high powered scope rifle and eliminate Jeff Ireland, just for the joy of it.

C63-AMG,

the coaches and players tried to win games because that's their job! Players showing up out of shape for the first few games is something different!

I'm no Chris Mortensen, but Nashville local radio been pretty much saying that it's a done deal for the last few hours confirmed behind the scenes thru various sources. Would make sense since Hutchison changed his mind from Seattle and signed with Titans. Bud Adams in town this weekend for grand sons wedding. They could do press conference Sunday or Monday.

So if Manning signs.with Titans should Fins go after Jake Locker. Manning will play for atleast 3 years. Locker or would you take Flynn.

Philbin likes having three/four WRs that are interchangeable - he doesn't like the #1, #2, etc WR system. Think about Green Bay - how many different WRs have big games for them. Remember Jordy Nelson? - he got off against the Steelers in the Super Bowl - they didn't have an answer for him.Jordy Nelson? I'm pretty excited about this offense. Of course we have to find the trigger man first and with Ieland/Ross at the helm...who knows?

we could have the playoffs, but we spent all around a Diva WR

if Marshall isn't going to play safety they need to resign Bell or go after Zbikowski or Nelson

It could be a lot worse.
The Marshal trade has upset a few, maybe many, but it was destined to happen.
You do not throw the org and your QB under the bus unless that is what you want.
Have a feeling that Coach Joe knows what he wants and where he is going.
We will be competitive even with the Pats.
We may not win big but we will win.
Now have 8 draft picks. Plenty of WR and rushers available.
Just believe.

Titans are not trading Locker.

I remember during a movie about Horseracing, they tried to make a certain horse with a certain jockey win, but the horse that was competing against them wouldn't cooperate and kept beating the horse-actor. Finally, I think they got 1 take right. Imagine a Team Sport.

DavidC and C63,

I have to admit after our 1-7 start I was ready for us to play Devlin at QB and suck for Luck.

But we didn't and i'm really tired of always talking about next year. Especially when we don't add a whole lot of talent in the off season.

We seriously need to add a couple of studs and play some good football for a change.

Flynn, Winston, Coples, Nelson, Blackmon whoever.

Fatty, exactly...Philbin's offense is all about spreading the ball...No #1's and #2's...I want to see what Gates and Clay can do in this offense...Should be interesting...

Trade for or draft a #1 wr? They aint falling from the trees and teams that have them arent real enthusiatic about trading them.

Now, if they were so easy to draft, why did we go so long without one between Chris Chambers and Brandon Marshall? Took about what 6-7-8yrs? Now Ireland trades one away overnight like taking out the trash.

The only #1 wr we could probably trade for right now is Ted Ginn Jr.

Weel, they got Sparano, we get Jaamal. tit-for-tat.

Oh yeah, Ted Ginn Jr still isnt a #1 wr! LOL

Rick, we started 0-7

I could live without Y.Bell...Very expensive and not that great in pass coverage...Let Rashad Jones get the SS position...

Good point Tampa Fin

It pains me to say it but some of you posters here are about as dumb and clueless as Ireland. Then you whine about never have a good team to root for. Geesh stupidity knows no bounds!

SELL THE CONDO! YOU ARE NOW IN ENEMY TERRITORY

The race was over when we traded or best reciever away.
Great sales job Dophins. Where is the New Yorker Ross on this?

Posted by: Mike Gentile | March 15, 2012 at 08:44 PM

Like it or Lump it Mike. Ross and Ireland are in full blown rebuild mode.

I think they got the news that Manning wasn't coming and decided the best way to kick of the rebuild project was by jettisoning Marshall.

(I wonder if "jettisoning" is even a word? Two T's or one? Who cares?)

Could've had Randy Moss. Should've had Dez Bryant,

Thanks for that glowing reminder Dave...lol. Apparently we longtime Dolfans are even hopelessly optimistic about the past. :)

I was a big fan of Marshall...The best weapon we had on offense...But I think that incident at the NY night club did it for him...Miami did the same thing Denver did before them...They got tired of it...

Sorry Montreal, but Bell covers a lot of field and Jones dont

Sounds like some of you clueless geniuses have it all figured out. "Oh, the west coast offense is all about spreading the ball out. You dont need a #1 or #2 wr."

Get a clue. The wc offense is all about timing. If our B-rated wr's get jammed at the line the entire timing of the routes are thrown off. If none of them can get deep or the defense isnt afraid of the qb's arm. Please guess what will happen?

It aint gonna be pretty genuises!

Tigre, Bell covers a lot of field? Since when? We've been terrible in pass defense for years...And the main reason for that is the play of our safeties...Bell is a strong tackler against the run...But he can't cover a tight end if his life depended on it...

Had we not chased Manning would we have had enough cap space to entice Mario Williams?

That would have free'd up our first rounder for a WR.

The only coach that built winners exclusively from FA was someone that few are old enough to remember. George Allen for the Redskins was allergic to draft picks and readily traded them for old vets. He had great teams with all players over 30 yrs old.

Rebuild? REBUILD? Nothing of that kind here, we're full speed ahead.

If Manning goes to Tenn. I hope we won't have to hear about what a great owner Bud Adams has been.
