Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting

Matt Flynn is scheduled to visit the Miami Dolphins in the next two days, a club source is saying at this hour.

Two things: This is the clearest and most obvious sign the Dolphins are done in the Peyton Manning chase. They will not get Manning.

And if you don't believe it, I point you to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who has been the most accurate and timely reporter on the Peyton Manning story.

Mort, on NFL32 just now, said "at least three teams are still alive" in the chase for the free agent quarterback. He mentioned Arizona. He mentioned Denver. He mentioned Tennessee.

He did not mention Miami.

And as if to drive home the point, Mortensen added "you notice we did not mention the Miami Dolphins."

Yes, we noticed.

So if ESPN is reporting three teams are still alive and the Dolphins are obviously moving on with a Flynn visit, what we have here is a pivot from the team -- Manning and Plan A to Flynn and Plan B.

Surprised? I'm not. I've you've been reading the posts the past two days, the vibe you should have gotten is that Manning was inching steadily away from Miami based on his actions, recent visit, and uncovering of what he's most looking for -- relationship he is comfortable with.

What does this mean going forward? I'm not going to rip the team for missing out on Manning, assuming that is exactly as it plays out. Look, they took a shot. The got closer than say, Kansas City or Seattle.

The sun will rise in the east tomorrow.

The fact Miami couldn't close is, well, kind of become the norm around here. So whatev.

But it is imperative for Miami to land someone to compete for the starting QB job next year. And Flynn is as good a candidate as most, I guess.

Might he become another Kevin Kolb or A.J. Feeley? I suppose that is possible. I worry about that. I assume the Dolphins worry about that. But the fact is he will come to the Dolphins and get a chance to play under a familiar system, for a familiar head coach who was his offensive coordinator the past few years is a comfort.

Having said that, I am hoping the Dolphins protect themselves. It makes zero sense giving Flynn a big contract -- with big contract being defined as high starter money in the $9-$10 million a year range. The truth is the Dolphins balked at giving Kyle Orton this type of deal last year so why give it to someone who is less proven?

It doesn't.

I hope the Dolphins proceed wisely. But I hope they do so with alacrity. Time is wasting.

Tight end is a LB job.

The reason some here so optimistic is because you dont know what the hell youre talking about and are just blowing smoke up eachother's bungholes! Then you wanna criticize those who are being realists!

We just can't draft a wr and expect him to pay off right away. Look at our wr pick from last year. Nothing. I would like to see the front office fill a void instead of creating one. If your going to get rid of our best offensive weapon have a plan. How many receivers are you going to draft? Then you have to hope they hit on them. Again see Gates. Some will say it takes a couple of years for a receiver to hit his stride but that doesn't help next year. I see a bunch of poor planning.

As for QB I think we should go for Tannehill. A guy who worked with Flynn ever day labeled him "top fifteen". Moore is a top fifteen. Use the money on O-line, Winston maybe. Would have liked to see PM in a Dolphin uniform but not heartbroken. We as fans would be right back were we are today in two or three years.

Just have to come to grips with the fact we will be rebuilding for a couple years. If Tannehill is gone ou pick trade our #1 to someone for their #1 next year and #3, we like threes, this year so we can have two ones next year to move up for Barkley. We will be picking somewhere eight to ten in 2013 draft. Love the Phins and always will but would like to get out of this funk we've been in for the last decade. Good luck to the new coaching staff. We watch every game I can up here in GA.

If we're rebuilding is Reggie Bush trade bait?

I would say Greg Jennings is #1 WR.

As far as building through the draft, you still have to fill holes through FA nowadays.

I actually can't think of one at the moment but i'm sure the Gaints have a few free agents on their team.

Yesterday, take a pill bro...A blog is not worth getting a heart attack, it's just opinions...FYI, the WC offense is all about spreading the ball...RB's, FB's, WR's, TE's...Yes timing is key, yes if none of them can get deep or the QB's arm is not strong enough it's not going to work. We all know that. Get over Peyton Manning. He NEVER wanted to come to Miami, if you couldn't see that, you're no genius either!

Well, it is true that all these amazing playmakers TE's have to be slowed down at the line, otherwise, not even Troy Polamalu can cover them.

I'll believe Manning is out of the picture when the official news comes out from the Fins FO.

Not from a Mortensen or other TV mouthpiece.

I am really amazed by those folks who want to always point out that Cowher didn't want any part of this, Gruden didn't want any part of this. The last I looked neither one of them is coaching in the NFL this next season. I imagine those are the same folks they celebrated the Cam Cameron hiring.

I truly hate to say this about anyone. Even my worst enemy. But the Dolphins would be far better off if we awakened one morning and found that Steven Ross had hung himself.

Thats just how f..ked my Miami Dolphins have become under him. I hate you Steven Ross!!

Step one is getting rid of Ireland. When that happens we'll be able to get a real coach and rebuild. Ross needs to grow a pair. Stop with the marketing and rebuild this team!!

Ireland cant rebuild legos.

Tiger, a strong safety is often called upon to cover a tight end...Bell did a lot of that...And wasn't very successful. He's not that much better against WR's. It's time to get younger at that position. Bell is expensive and not worth it. Just my opinion of course.

Draft vs. FA

with the new salary structure, draft picks are more valuable than ever!

Im not pissed about Peyton. Im pissed about what my Miami Dolphins have become. Things have gotten even worse since Huizenga sold and things had gotten pretty bad under him.

Im absolute sick of seeing this team the past 5 years now taking 1 step forward and two fricken steps backwards every single season.

Someone should just go burn the stadium down already. We no longer have a football team!

we can exchange views on peace, we are on the same team

You might mean, just how fukked up you are, YG.

matt flynn video..judge for yourself

Tigre, amen brother!

Just have to boycott till Ireland is fired. I wont spend a dime on this farce. Eventually, Ross will get it.

oscar canosa,

stfu you unintelligent wuss!

The team gets worse every year. Joe Robbie is rolling over in his grave at how these jokers have buried the team in the cellar.

Everyone just slow down.

I have been a big advocate of getting Flynn....IF Philbin really pushes for him. Is Philbin ready to tie his career to Flynn? We don't know that is the case.

He is coming for a VISIT. Just like Winston. It doesn't immediately mean we will sign him. Seattle had Henne in for a visit and Henne signed with Jacksonville.

Flynn visited Seattle. Did anyone hear formally that he left town without a contract or that he left at all? I haven't.

IF Philbin pushes for him and IF the Fins sign him, I'd be excited to have him. Everyone who says he doesn't have starting experience. I simply ask you...Did Steve Young immediately start in the NFL? How about Aaron Rodgers? Oh yeah, what about Tom Brady?

The fact is nobody knows if Flynn will be great. But nobody knows that he won't be. I say IF Philbin believes in him the Fins should sign him. If nobody has signed him by the weekend the Fins should get him for a reasonable starting salary for a NFL QB. If it doesn't work out then we move on.

BTW...I am glad the team pursued Manning. It shows they are willing to go for it all. The competition was great for the biggest free agent in NFL history. The team's inability to land him doesn't mean it is a failure.

Take a breath and let it all play out.

Ross just needs to let Ireland do his job. I will be the first to admit that Ireland hasn't set the world on fire but I do believe he is getting better.

I would really like to see him get ouf Parcell's shadow and his player molds and prototype theories.

Lets just draft college players who were productive against top national programs.

Vince Young is better than Flynn or Moore.

Bring him in to compete. He'll win hands down.

Has everyone forgotten he's been to the ProBowl twice?
Offensive Rookie of the year, 1st QB taken in 2006?

Fisher was the problem not Young. Hasn't Fins/Fisher encounter shed any light on the Fisher/Young relations?

At this time, there's no sure fire substitute for Y. Bell, and as we are in a winning now mode, I say he stays.

And when you say Miami, your talking a BIG JOKE

"The Dolphins had to enlist the help of Hall of Famer Dan Marino just to get a meeting with free agent Peyton Manning, according to a report from the Palm Beach Post.
For the same reasons that Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher grew leery of the organization, we've suspected all along that the Dolphins were never a true contender for Manning. This report confirms that sentiment. Until owner Stephen Ross places more emphasis on football than gaining a firmer toehold for the Dolphins on the South Beach entertainment scene, there are going to be more swings-and-misses."

I'm still wondering why Ross continued to chase Manning even when everyone outside the organization doubted the Dolphins chances against Denver, Arizona, & now Tennessee. For a well educated & highly successful businessman he's really making himself look like a buffoon just like Dan Snyder & Jerry Jones.

So....How do you like owning a football team so far Mr. Ross???

Yesterday, we're something like 3 days into free agency...The draft is a month and a half away...Let see how all of this plays out...I trust Philbin and so should you...Let's give these guys a chance...There's still a lot of changes coming up...

This is the same old story. They go after someone, lose out, then they waited too long to secure their backup person. I don't see Matt Flynn leaving Seattle. We sat here and wasted all that time on Manning. The players and the coaches change but the GM does not change. Yet Miami continues to lose out time and time again. When will Ireland be fired!

Doplfans need to find a way to band together and show Ireland that even though he may be the owner. This is still our damn team.

If he doesnt know what he's doing sell the fricken team. He cant be a dolfan the way he's driving this franchise into the ground!

Well, GN.

Losing Fisher was disaster for the Fins.

Ireland said that he would not get rid of Yeremiah b/c he brings it every day both as a leader & a player.

yes when the LB lost the TE, but the TE is more LB job, when the SS tackles the TE he allready gain 10 or 15 yards.

Raise your hand if you believe Marino's feedback or lack thereof influenced Manning's decision.

I believe Marino poisened the well.

We see how it plays out every year for the last 4yrs. Not very good. What makes this year so special. Its beginning like all of the rest.

Fail to get the hc, dump the #1 wr it took this franchise 6-7-8yrs since Chambers to find, chasing after the wrong qb, still needing a true starting qb.

WTH is different from any of the other dysfunctional offseason in Miami?

A risky football move, but smart for marketing $$$. This place will go kookoo for cocoa puffs on jerseys and God knows what else as far as merchandising. No doubt Peyton is a good guy,(have been around him a few times thru UT connections), but personally feel that the risk is way too high.
DC's are gonna come after him with everything but the Pepsi vendor in the stands blitz. I wish him the best, but I just don't think he holds up.
I like Flynn, and am glad touchdown drop / penalty drawer Marshall is gone ! The whole WR thing is odd. Sure was hoping we would go after some of the top dogs out there like VJ.

Yesterday's Way Gone,

something to cheer you up: A Bunghole or Bungehole is a hole bored in a liquid-tight barrel to remove contents. The hole is capped with a large cork-like object called a bung. (Wiki)

Good-This being hand tied by a great but self-centered money seeking broken (even if getting better) player--that is not a mean-spiritied description, just the truth. We are in the heat of FA and have either missed opportunities waiting for Manning to make up his mind or we were not going after them anyway. What worries me is last year it was evident Ross was not spending on FA's and we miss opportunities then, too. if this is a repeat, the team has been damaged. If not, they can't and won't tell anything, to not tip any hand they want to play, so we have to be patient.

It has been pretty clear that Manning was not coming to the Phins, though in many ways it was worth the trying. I think the Bills signing Mario was a last straw, seeing that D Line and the AFC East being still among the most competitive. I believe from the get-go Philbin did not want him as his first choice.

Everyone automatically puts Flynn as Philbin's first QB desire, but that is also not necessarily so--only he can validate. However, it does make sense to pursue Flynn and he will be less costly than first anticipated. This remains a risk/reward scenario, with much of the league not so far removed from where the 'Phins find themselves, and the value is certainly better if they try to bring Flynn in. Can still play in the draft for QB, WR, line, TE, etc.

I just wonder how much Manning's condo is being listed for, 'cause I am sure he is no longer a welcome

Hey Dolfan Rick, don`t you think the resigning of Soliai changes the thought of Miami being a hybrid 4-3 to a hybrid 3-4. In this scenario there are much more draft able options in the second round, like Vinny Curry perhaps.I think you win with complete teams, not 1 hit wonders.Putting all our eggs into Manning/Williams is a fools errand IMHO.

Strike three We don't need good players we ha he whom believes to be the best GM why PLAYMAKERS, to bad Ross and Ireland can't play for sh_ _ ! or they could be as good (sarcastic)on the field as they are running the team, not ruining the team they r great at that......

Losing Fisher was disaster for the Fins.

No it wasn't. The disaster was/is not that we didn't get Fisher it was a disaster b/c Fisher already had his mind up that he was going to the Rams & he played Ross to get more money.

Going after Harbaugh & not getting him was not a disaster either. The disaster was that Sparano was still the HC when Ross & Ireland pursued him!!!!

This franchise is such a mess right now that if Dan Marino could return to playing football. Even he wouldnt come here. So do you really think that he would personally reccomend to Manning that he should come play for these misfits?

These jokers didnt deserve Peyton Manning. Or Fisher.

The Dolphins signed guard Artis Hicks (Thats Hicks not Nicks) to a 1 yr deal.

He started all of 3 games for the Browns last year.

He will give us depth though.. Maybe we can bring back Tony's OL rotation...lol

Why all the Ireland bashing? He has done many things right too. Some of you are only happy to have someone to bash. We could go 14 and 2 this year, than what will you say?

Why all the Ireland bashing?

6-10 in year 4

Mortenson tweet
@mortreport: RT @sportsfandj18: do you feel miami is out of it? Fact that activity with Matt Flynn seems to have picked up suggests Fins know status

Armando, c'mon man, nowhere does it say here that Mortenson said Miami is eliminated. And for Mortonson to say because Miami is talking to Flynn, that means they are out of the race?? A lot of conjecture on both your parts.

Dolphan Rick,

Whaddaya mean depth. If Miami signed a guard(Artis Hicks) he's the new starter. These clowns are getting ready to send Vernon Carey packing. Wait and see!

Yesterday, call me crazy, but I like Philbin and his staff...I can't say why exactly...I just think he's got what it takes...And screw Fisher...He's overrated...And never wanted to come here anyway...Just like Manning...Fukk him...

Our big off season splash has quickly turned into a complete and thorough drowning!

Does signing Hicks mean we can cut Nate Garner. He`s a sieve and we could save $1450000 by cutting him.

Matt Moore is way better and so are a few rookies

Philbin = Cam Cameron

Flynn = A.J. Feeley

Heck I liked Sparano. I like the new staff. But just like with Sparano, Ross/Ireland will do exactly what they wanna do then make the hc the scapegoat when it fails. Wait and see!

LLLOOLLL.. SAME OLD SAME OLD, season after season and as long as Jeff "THE SCOUT" Ireland is in charge we will continue to suck.

Don't even bother getting excited at who we buy as QB as it really doesn't matter now does it? Some of you like Flynn, some Moore, Some Peyton and some , well, some one else.

Each and every year under this butt wipe Ireland we fans sit here and watch how all our competition gets things done. The Bills make things happen, The Pats make things happen, The Rex makes things happen and the Dolphins SUCK at making things happen.

If you are going to be waiting around here in high anticipation that Jeffy boy is going to WOW you with some pick or FA, then I have a wall i just painted that you can watch dry.

Just calling THE Scout what he is, A SCOUT in a GM's office.

Ya he doesn't have great arm strenght. Well Drew Brees doesn't have great arm strenght and Chad Henne Does..... So whats your point. Jay Cutler has more arm strenth than Tom Brady and Peton Manning, whats your point...... Joe Flacco has better arm strenght than Aaron Rogers, whats your point........ Trust me Flynn he has more arm strenght than Chad Pennington and thats all you really need. actually if Pennington could have ever stayed healthy he wasn't even that bad. I here Dante Culpepper and jamarcus russel have great arm strenght, DO YOU WANT THEM
