Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting

Matt Flynn is scheduled to visit the Miami Dolphins in the next two days, a club source is saying at this hour.

Two things: This is the clearest and most obvious sign the Dolphins are done in the Peyton Manning chase. They will not get Manning.

And if you don't believe it, I point you to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who has been the most accurate and timely reporter on the Peyton Manning story.

Mort, on NFL32 just now, said "at least three teams are still alive" in the chase for the free agent quarterback. He mentioned Arizona. He mentioned Denver. He mentioned Tennessee.

He did not mention Miami.

And as if to drive home the point, Mortensen added "you notice we did not mention the Miami Dolphins."

Yes, we noticed.

So if ESPN is reporting three teams are still alive and the Dolphins are obviously moving on with a Flynn visit, what we have here is a pivot from the team -- Manning and Plan A to Flynn and Plan B.

Surprised? I'm not. I've you've been reading the posts the past two days, the vibe you should have gotten is that Manning was inching steadily away from Miami based on his actions, recent visit, and uncovering of what he's most looking for -- relationship he is comfortable with.

What does this mean going forward? I'm not going to rip the team for missing out on Manning, assuming that is exactly as it plays out. Look, they took a shot. The got closer than say, Kansas City or Seattle.

The sun will rise in the east tomorrow.

The fact Miami couldn't close is, well, kind of become the norm around here. So whatev.

But it is imperative for Miami to land someone to compete for the starting QB job next year. And Flynn is as good a candidate as most, I guess.

Might he become another Kevin Kolb or A.J. Feeley? I suppose that is possible. I worry about that. I assume the Dolphins worry about that. But the fact is he will come to the Dolphins and get a chance to play under a familiar system, for a familiar head coach who was his offensive coordinator the past few years is a comfort.

Having said that, I am hoping the Dolphins protect themselves. It makes zero sense giving Flynn a big contract -- with big contract being defined as high starter money in the $9-$10 million a year range. The truth is the Dolphins balked at giving Kyle Orton this type of deal last year so why give it to someone who is less proven?

It doesn't.

I hope the Dolphins proceed wisely. But I hope they do so with alacrity. Time is wasting.

1. The front office for this team has recently made very good moves i.e. - Reggie Bush, Matt Moore, Cameron Wake, etc.....
2. This team went 6-3 in their last 9 games (status quo)
3. The resigning of Solai is big
4. We got an exciting new head coach, Offensive Coordinator and potential new QB (Flynn or draft) to compete against a solid incumbent
Fins are close to contending even without a new QB, stop your daily infantile whining and let it all play out!
I personally believe Ireland is respected in the inner NFL circles and has done a nice job building this team for the future!
We have an opportunity to complement our FA additions through the draft, and nothing in the past few years has shown that the team will not effectively bolster the roster at that time.
I am really tired of your sky-is-falling, the front office are idiots banter...
In spite of your rants, I believe the Fins are building a competitive team!

Flynn sux

Flynn is a total waste when we have Moore already

I don't know why some of you think Moore is so good...may I remind you he hasn't put together a season of games at all. The best stretch was 6-7 games before he folded in the past..
I'm not saying In Like Flynn is much better because I haven't seen enough of him..but I've seen a lot of Moore over the years and the best thing he did and knew how to do is fold at some point....

The Phins should work out Alex Smith. I am not sure why the 49ers have not signed him.

Ireland will find a way to F up the In Like Flynn deal, just watch....

Manning is smart, he knows this front office is in disarray. Probably knows Jeff Ireland and Ross will end up running the team to the ground. DOLPHINS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why some of you think Moore is so good...may I remind you he hasn't put together a season of games at all. The best stretch was 6-7 games before he folded in the past
Might want to read up on Moore's History. Before you wish to remind someone of a fact that is indeed misleading. I will just make a small contribution, Moore was involved in the ever revolving QB carousel that was the Panthers. NO Im not trying to be a DK, just would like people to get their facts seperated from their opinions.

For everybody that gets a kick at burning Ross for trying to get the big names and failing...try being realistic for a change the Saints owner was the most hated owner in the NFL, for years the fans were clamoring for him to sell the team before and after Katrina, he got lucky and scored on Brees and now he is a loved personality by the whole Saints community.

Robert Kraft got lucky they found a one in a million in Brady. Cowboys found there franchise QB has an undrafted free agent. All these examples prove that while skill is needed a strong dose of good fortune is also needed to change the fate of a franchise. The Phins will once again have there day...

@Carol City Ish

But we have a draft guru on staff. Shouldn't be this hard to find acorns.

Manning is avoiding playing and getting punked by Brady. Mathematically he has very little chance of hitting it big again in Miami. No huge surprise. Chances are he doesn't succeed wherever he goes. I think Philbin and Co. were cool about this the whole time. Get Flynn and draft a QB. Moving on.

This is for the best, get flynn and still have money to add a few more pieces (RT), then use those draft choices carefully. I would like to see Miami trade up to 3 to get Blackmon. If you gave away Marshall for two 3rd rounders, and use those two picks to move up your really just gave up Marshall to move up 5 spots in draft and get his replacement...not a bad move.

Here are the reasons we did not land Manning.

First, we did not invite him for a formal interview at Dolphin HQ, but instead sent a contingent to Indy to meet with him instead.

Second, we did not make an "all out" offer like Tennessee did, but rather let the whole thing play out as though we were anticipating Manning to go elsewhere by beginning an interview process with another QB, Flynn.

Third, we traded the only solid receiver that Manning could have thrown to in Brandon Marshall, and managed to get only 2 third round draft picks when he was worth at least a first or two seconds, like we paid for him in the first place.

I believe Manning was actually considering the Fins initially, but when he witnessed one stupid move after another on behalf of Dolphin management, he saw nothing but bad days ahead if he made the mistake of signing with us. Ireland is clearly not cut out to be a GM.

Also manning probably would not want to tarnish his image by working for Ross and Ireland..Manning had to know about the Ireland mom's a ho thing. And Ross's chase for Harbagh while Tony was still coach...I believe things like this really hurt our chances..speculation purely on my end...but it feels right to me

I assure you this time next year we're all going to be saying I wish we had Chad Henne when he takes over the starting job at Jacksonville and takes them to the playoffs...We had a more then capable qb and we let him go...Brees didn't become the qb he is until his 4th year and with the offense henne had in place he had no choice but to fail...I'm the most optimistic person in the world and until today I thought manning was going to choose Miami because he went to visit the others and miami went to him...In any state placement test with multiple choice when you have 3 possible answers that are almost identical and then the 4th one is totally different then you always choose the multiple choice that's different from the other 3...All I know the dolphins traded marshall for 2 3rd round picks? who does that? how can any coach not have marshall in their plans? I've been a die hard dolphin fan now for over 27 years and let me tell you give me back dave wannstedt and jay fiedler I can't believe I would rather have those days back isn't that crazy...This regime has become a laughing stock in the nfl circles...Thanks a lot wayne huizenga!!!!

Spiro...you are delusional bro... Gabbert will not lose out to henne in the QB comp for the right to start...thanks for the laugh though

The Dolphins are living life in the losers bracket. A loser, but very rich, owner who turns everything he touches in a football sense to crap. (Remember Tebow Day? The day that will live in infamy in Dolphin history. Or the response to a press question that "I am not an idiot." Of course proving without a doubt he is an idiot for denying the obvious.) A notorious general manager better known for the penetrating questions he asks potential draft choices than for his player acquisitions. The rookie fob head coach who looks like a history professor and reminds me of Cam Cameron. The bevy of fools, charlatans and frauds, the whole lot.

Some of us remember school yard pick up games. The first pick of the school yard pick up game was usually the ball hog.

Point being this...

The ball hog was usually pretty good. But Ireland never chooses the ball hog. He chooses the worst players available.

Analogy for the stupid. Marshall was a ball hog and Ireland opts for Mr. Irrelevant.

Manning won't pick Miami

swamis, snake handlers and popes, all feeding at the same trough.Posted on earlier blog the manning chase was a ruse.Phil wants HIS man.....FLYNN.And to be honest if I were him I would too.(not sayin that would be good for the phins).Phibin(ya meant that)wants to run the O he knows and atleast reggie b fits that type of system Ya I'm graspin for anythying to belive even if it's in my own mind.

Good Evening "FINLAND", Another Swing And miss from Ireland/Ross team, These guys couldnt get .... Ahhhh never mind.

Finland...Ahh yes, the home of the DerWeinerSchlider

Refresh yosefff

Well I for one am HOPING that they screw up signing Flynn too, like most everyone else they've wanted. I HOPING that he goes somewhere else (though not Seattle because that's my girlfriends team and don't wish him on her either). Unless they invest very little in him (unlikely since someone will give him too much money based on how hungry the NFL is for QB's), then he will cost them too much for not very high chances of success. If they sign him they will probably not go after another QB high in the draft and they NEED to do that this year and next until they get it right, FINALLY. If they get him and still go after another QB in the 1st round, then I'd be ok with it. Still think they should get a QB in the 1st AND also get Russell Wilson in the later rounds.

If competition AND seeing players in actual camp situations performing actual NFL duties is the key to unearthing maybe Philbin will take a three pronged approach.

#1 Matt Moore He already has a QB on the roster that won games with NO CAMP and while being thrown into the mix late when Henne went down. With better schemes and more talent around him he could grow. Only around 19 NFL starts for Moore so he still has room to get better.

#2 After a swing and a miss on Manning they shoot for a familiar face in Flynn. Flynn knows Philbin and vice versa so I doubt he passes on the opportunity to get a fair shake to win the starting job. Philbin would already be getting better competition for Moore than Sparano EVER gave Henne.

#3 They take yet another shot and turn over yet another rock in the draft. Target who they like if they land Flynn. Maybe Cousins, Wilson or Weeden saving a 1st rounder #8 for the most talented player overall.

It's not sexy but getting very solid picks with most or many of your draft choices will wind you up with a much stronger team in a few years.

Case in point...Center was probably NOT our most glaring need when they took Pouncey. Bloodlines, where they were in the 1st round and a desire to get the best player ended up netting just that...a very solid player.

If they (Philbin n Sherm) think Tanneyhill has such vast potential maybe they nab him. I seriously doubt they grab Flynn AND go after Tanneyhill early. A guy like Cousins in the 3-4 range may make great sense though.

This would give Philbin 3 viable QB options. Sorry to those Devlin fans but he would be gone in this scenario. Philbin can watch all 3 QBs and give the reins to the winner of true camp battles.

My best guess or best course of action with the 8th pick is to slide back a little and get extra mid picks "IF" you can still get WR Floyd or LB Ingram.

If picking at #8 and they deem Tanneyhill future franchise type talent (They would be FO making that call...I don't see it) they take him to groom.

If not I would grab DE Q. Coples as he has the size, speed and skill to be a very solid pass rusher/run stuffer. A poor mans Julius Peppers so to speak.

If they go Offense it would seem that netting the 2nd best OT prospect (Reiff) wouldn't be too bad.

Abde, abde, abde...that's all folks! lol

Matt Moore took over for Delhomme when he was injured in the 12th week of the 2009 season and won 4 of 5 to finish the season. The Panthers had a losing record before that and they finished 8-8, going 4-1 to end the season.
In 2010 he suffered a concussion in the first game. He didn't play well in his next game and was benched in favor of Clausen and missed the next 3 games. In week 9 he injured his shoulder and was put on IR for the remainder of the season. The Panthers had a lot of injuries in 2010. I don't put it all on him.
Last year he finished the season 6-3. That's similar to what he did in going 4-1 for Carolina in '09. This team didn't play well as a unit until after the midway point of the season. Moore is a good quarterback and he can improve if they take a little time with him. He's shown he could be a winner. At the end of the 2009 season he was 6-2 as a starter. 2010 was a different story but only because the Panthers coudln't protect him with their line having injuries.

It will soon be 6AM. Allright. Time to move on.

Sign Flynn for the right price but follow it up by drafting Tannehill. Build through the draft.

Who would waste good money to go see this team play. They show no intentions of having a winning team.

IF we get Flynn...the chances of Moore being our starter is slim to none.
I'd assume that Flynn will be making more $$$ than Moore and the coaches are more familiar with Flynn's traits than Moore.

There will be a competition in camp, but in reality Flynn gets the start in week 1 and Moore holds the clipboard waiting for yet another chance to prove himself.

Remember the days when the NFL offseason provided some hope and positive spirits for us Dolfans? Keith Jackson, Ricky Williams, Irving Fryar, even guys like Brock Marion and Chad Pennington were acquisitions to celebrate. Now its only different degrees of disappointment.
I wanted peyton because I think he still has something left in the tank.
I was ready to punch somebody when I heard that we traded Marshall for a sack of magic beans. You knew he was a head case when we got him. What changed?
I don't want Flynn. Maybe I'm wrong, but to me he's got Kevin Kolb and AJ Feeley written all over him
But most of all, I want a little hope that we are working towards our first championship since Nixon was president, or even our first Superbowl appearance since Magnum PI was a top rated TV show. And I have none.

We as fan should boycott the franchise until the upper management change. Is anyone out there think they are to sabotage our team to have an excuse to take it some where else? Mr Ireland you have no football heart and that is why out team is suffering. Lost manning because of you. I guess this will be another disappointing season. Fans please let Mr. Ross and Mr. Ireland know who are the ones that bring the money to the team, lets show them who is the boss let the keep there show and we wait until our football team is in better hands. Lets not show to any game, buy and merchandiser, we have the power to let them know we care about football no a Vegas show.

Funny u should mention risk. Manning is nothing but risk. Paying that guy 28 mill a yr is absolutly idiotic. IF Flynn signs here and leads the Dolphins to victory would be nice,,,but if Ireland, who acts like free agency hasnt started yet, lags on the OL Flynn wont have a chance. Moore was concussed last yr, Henne was injured, does that sound like a playoff OL to you? Ireland has signed who in free agency. A #4-5 DB, an Olmen who probably wont make the team? Wake up Ireland, free agency is in full swing, do aomething, spend Ross's money. Or go hide in your hole.

draft tannehille at # 8

Here's the thing:

You install Philbin as head coach and with it a certain philosophy of the way the game should be played, i.e. his West Coast Offense.

Manning wants not only to be a starting QB in the NFL, but also COMPLETE CONTROL wrt play calling. He's more than a QB ... he's an offensive coordinator too, and he's not going to settle for anything less.

If Philbin says he can work with Flynn, then give him a chance to prove it. Let him prove his philosophy. Our Dolphins now have GLARING holes at both QB and WR (and the whole right OL) and they need to act now, either through the draft or via free agency, to alleviate these concerns.

Peace. Rob.

I knew Peyton Manning would not come to Miami, which top player does.
Well although disappointed it might be a blessing in disguise. He is old, one big hit away from probably the end of his career. Also I don't think he has what it takes to take another team to the Superbowl.
His best days are best as one of the Greatest QB's ever.

Come on down Matt Flynn, let's see what your made of. Must try and sign him at least we can find out if he is the real deal or not. If things work out great if not then maybe 2013 will probably be the year that the Phins finally after all the years of heartache we can get our stud QB.

Let's see what happens the next few days.

Stay strong Phin fans, things can only get better not worse!!

I hope.

I respect all that Peyton Manning has done and well deserved but he hasn't won but one superbowl in all his time playing and has only been there twice. He is great when you focus on stats but he is no Brady and if he came here he would have to face Brady twice per year and he knew that. He wants to win a superbowl now so he has decided to stay as far away from Brady as he can to maximize his chances and rightfully so because teams that wan't to win a Superbowl usually try and meet Brady in the superbowl rather than going through him. I am a Dolphan but fact is fact and until Brady retires or is traded away it will be very difficult to be the King of the East.

Will the final and last remaining Dolphins fan remember to please turn off the lights as you flee this sinking ship in search of a more adequately run franchise to support....

Matt Moore did a decent job last year and in my opinion will be the starter next season. Flynn will go to the Seahawks. The Dolphins have little to offer him. Seattle has a good coach and good owners and he will stay out west. Not a bad living area if you ask me. Far far away from Republicans like Ross and Ireland. Besides when was the last time we wanted something and got it? They should have done what the Redskins did.
I will say it one more time.

No one takes the Dolphins seriously. No one. It'll take this franchise turning things around for a few consistent years for anyone to consider us to be a legit franchise again. Ireland is over his head. I wish Mickey Arison would buy the Dolphins and show this town what a real owner is like.

On the bright side, if ANYONE knows if Flynn is worth a damn, it's Philbin. Here's hoping we don't screw this up, too.

Maybe Manning was in attendance during the game where the Dolphins "honored" Tebow and Broncos, and figured if the Dolphins loved Denver so much, he might like it there, too.

Free at last! Free at last! Move on - at least the Dolphins FO handled this one a little better and we don't look like the bride left at the altar again!

Sign a QB - draft a QB - EVERY single year until we get it right. EVERY year until we get the right guy.

No he has to get Flynn at reasonable money, you can't over pay for him. Pay him as a backup and fill the contract with incentives. Go get Wallace and let him stretch the field.

What I find funny is all the speculation!!! Has Peyton actually come out and said "I am leaning towards so and so"?

Until I hear it from the horses (colts) mouth I dont believe a dam word from the talking heads!

Manning knew all along that Philbin wanted Matt Flynn. so thats why mannings out. Flynn to me seems the best option, let Moore compete or be the backup, get the best receiver they can in the draft and build like the packers did. Flynn was supposed to be the starter at LSU when he went there but Jamarcus Russell was there at the same time and he probably didnt get a fair shot there. Flynn was obviously highly thought of to be a backup brought in by the packers, and all that time under philbin he oughta be ready to get it done. and now that sherman is their west coast offensive coordinator our offense should be better and help our good defense get better. We finally have a offensive minded coach and a offensive coordinator at the same time on the same page, im looking forward to that...

we suck bad!! our receiving corps is bad now.. we can't get quality people to play for this team. philbin wasn't the mastermind behind the packers.. he was just part of the system? who else wanted him?? who's heard of him before the stupid ireland hired him? we might as well draft bosa, kumervil, sammie smith, and bring back daunte, feeley so they can compete too.. this will at least guarantee we get the qb we really need.. come on another 6-10 season?? been through too many this decade...

Maybe the football people were not on board with a crazy owner who wants PM because of the Marquis headlines and to just sell tickets.

The only power the fans have to change the FO and possibly get the owner to sell the team is to BOYCOTT GAME TICKETS, these financial types have to see it as a spiraling down investment and they will drop it right now. WE WONT WIN WITH THE PRESENT REGIME IN PLACE.

We should have re-signed Henne and tried to lose everything again...We couldn't even lose good. Another year of hoping to achieve mediocrity.

Get this dude in the 3 round
Brock Osweiler, QB, Arizona State
Height: 6-7. Weight: 242.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Hand: 9 7/8.

Ross should've fired Irland 1st. Then we could have gotten a coach that wants to be here and knows what he's doing. Instead all we get is this circlejerk from the Front Office and the deeper the hole we dig!! This isn't funny anymore. We were one of the most respected TEAMS in THE NFL and now we are the BIGGEST JOKE!!! I've been watching NFL & ESNP all morning and they are just laughing at you Mr. Ross. Some how you just can't get Jeff's NOSE out of you CRACK!!!

Why were the Phins ever considered a front runner for Manning? ESPN reports so much unsubstantiated crap. My guess is Peyton's priority is a team he believes will go to the Superbowl now.
Who believes Manning would look at the Phin situation, of hiring a first time NFL coach with a team that mustered 6 wins last year, and envision this as his best shot at a Superbowl???
I'll be much more disappointed in Phin brass if they pay 7th round pick Flynn Manning type money. That will be a sure sign that things aren't getting any better in Miami.

As my daughter would say, REALLY? A two start NFL QB without an array of targets like GB? REALLY???
Mando, agree we not rip the Dolphins as a team of players but a greedy owner without pride in winning and with an inept GM are different stories.
Ross made his money in real estate, a trade that has made tons of money by polishing terds and selling those shiny stinkers to us dummies. Any doubt? Hey South Florida, how's that equity working for you?
To Ross and Co, the pre-game gala and half time pomp and circumstance have turned into boring re-runs. Put a consistet winner on the field for 60 minutes a game, build back that money spending fan base, and you will need to hire an extra accountant to count all your money.
Although I never liked the Raiders, Al Davis (RIP) kept and grew his fan base, as well as made big money on "JUST WIN BABY". And, as a bonus, he could always manipulate the NFL to his benefit because they couldn't ignore a winning franchise that made them money . . . BRILLIANT!!!
Here's the problem for us, real estate people make money by qick flips they call investments. True investments in sports are made with acquiring and developing personel then molding them into a team or a brand. It takes intelligence and time. The time period is shorter when the intel is greater. Ireland has had his time and used it with poor intelligence and decisions. If Ross wants to stay in this biz, he needs to either replace him or give that power to a head coach who is willing to spend 24/7 building back this once great team.
