Dolphins QB search now in spin mode

And now David Garrard is scheduled to visit the Dolphins on Monday, The Herald's Barry Jackson has confirmed.

Two things:

What is it with the Dolphins and quarterbacks with neck issues? First Peyton Manning and now the club is flirting with a player who had bulging disc surgery last year. First thing the team will do with this visit? Get him to a doctor to see what the deal is.

Another thought I have is that this a kick-the-tires visit, if it even happens because I'm still expectant on Matt Flynn making a decision either by this evening or tomorrow morning.

Beyond that, the Dolphins QB search after Peyton Manning can be described in two different ways. I will describe both ways and let you decide which to believe.

The positive spin: The Dolphins know no one left on the free agency market is a franchise quarterback. They believe Flynn might be a good player and are willing to pay him as such to compete with Matt Moore. But the contract offer they made Flynn's agent safeguards the team against Matt Flynn being a tremendous bust and playing like the seventh-round draft pick he was years ago. This is protecting oneself for the good of the franchise. So the Dolphins, so far unable to get Flynn to buy into the idea of coming to Miami and competing for a starting job, are kicking the tires on practically anyone else on the market. They are doing due diligence. They have a set price they're willing to pay and they're sticking by their convictions. They'll get somebody. But they'll not overpay for anybody.

The negative spin: The Dolphins couldn't close on Peyton Manning. The Dolphins couldn't close on Matt Flynn. They probably won't be able to close on Alex Smith because he's going to want to get paid and they're not going to overpay him -- at least until their desperation kicks in. And now they're in full-fledged grasp at straws mode by checking out Garrard, a guy who didn't want to play for them last year for the price Miami was willing to pay. On the Garrard thing, I was told by several team sources that money was not an issue in getting him that there was other factors. A source close to Garrard said the exact opposite. That Miami underwhelmed in their offer to him and he didn't want to come to South Florida for that small of a prorated deal. This was, you may recall, in October when the Dolphins were desperate after Chad Henne's season-ending injury. So what has changed? Well, Garrard is more desperate now. No one has been serious about him even visiting until the Dolphins did it. And the Dolphins are just kicking tires. And we're supposed to be enthusiastic about this?

Those are the two possible spins on what is happening in Davie. You decide.

So now Smith is going to Seattle for an interview.

Craig what makes Tannehill so intriging is the fact that he also started at wide receiver the rest of the time he was in college he wasn't playing qb so he knows the system from 2 positions. He will know what the receivers should be doing and what the qb should be doing.

KY Phinfan....that's what they said about Pat White....

Again, it's not popular to side with Jeff Ireland but I got to applaud the guy. He wants Flynn at HIS price. I TOTALLY agree. A lot of you guys are just DESPERATE. Throw money at this guy, throw money at that guy.

Craig,

According to Armando's last blog, the Dolphin's told Flynn they wanted him as their quarterback, so I believe Philbin really does want him.

As far as throwing money at him, ever since the market for Flynn became limited to Seattle and Miami, I haven't seen those big numbers thrown around as earlier by the media.

Regarding Smith, if Jeff is trying to get "his guys" at "his price", it looks pretty foolish to bring in Smith, knowing that he had just rejected about 8 million a year over three years.

I can just see it now, "Hey Alex, heard you're pissed San Fran is hot and heavy for Manning. I've got a number written on this paper I'm gonna hand to you. I like to call that number "my price". Now let's get this done.

I think Flynn can be elite. any Back up seventh Rd pick is unlikely to be very good but once in a while someone will buck the trend. Flynn has the background of someone who might be such an exception.

Hasn't played much but looks v good when he does
Comes from a good tradition of coaching QBs
will play in a system suited to him

Of all the unlikely QBs Flynn is the one who most hints at this kind of unlikely success.

if the Dolphins get him and add a few weapons this week everything will star to look much better...

Phins78,

Hey A-s Hole, glad to see you not here today. That dude is such a douche bag. Ok with that being said, Go phins get Matt Flynn.

I don't know, Garrard has some decent stats compared to the great ones.

Manning-14 years- avg QB rating 94.9
Favre-100 years- avg QB rating 86.0
Elway-16 years - avg QB rating 79.9
Marino - 17 years - avg QB rating 86.4
Brady - 12 years avg QB rating (okay, off the charts)
Brees - 11 years - avg QB rating 94.0

David Garrard - 9 years - avg QB rating 85.8

I don't know, Garrard can only help and not hurt. I don't see how he makes the team worse. Who did Garrard have to throw too in JAX?

db,

lol, my typo as I was putting in Peytons stat and it carried over the 2001 season.

It was in 1998 when Marino beat him twice. Great games

LOL @ Signal

Smith is Not coming To Miami, No Way, He'll either stay In San Fran or go to Seattle, He's from Oregon anyway, Even still, He's not the "Elite" QB anyones looking for anyway. No Story here, Move along....

kyphinfan,

No guarantees when it comes to young QBs but I like his athleticism, the fact he's worked with Sherman and the fact that he's only going to get better. Is the answer? Who knows. But he has as much chance as anybody. Luck is about as sure a thing as there's been, probably since Manning and there are even those that wonder just how going he's going to become. We need to take a chance on one of these guys at some point. Why not start now? I'd be fine with him as third stringer to a couple of vets like Moore and Garrard and I'm not even much of a Garrard fan.

@craig .. you must be a loser !!!

Sometimes....

I wonder if driving this team into the ground isn't part of their "Grand Scheme" to move the team to California???

It's the only thing that can make sense out of some of the things that they do! Look like you're building a great team while actually doing the opposite! Talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. Give lip service to making the team a winner, but don't do anything that might actually make that happen. Draft good players, then make sure they cant't succeed. Get an Alpha receiver, then when he shows potential...trade him. Toy with a HOF QB that you know you can't afford, then make no decisions unless you're the one getting a deal! Let your GM's ego ruin your team because he does really well at Madden! Especially as a GM!

Yep! And, screw the fans because they're just stupid rednecks anyways, right?

Sometimes....

I wonder....

WTF???

Honestly, I was fine with just Matt Moore until the traded Marshall... now its all just really bad. I am a dodger fan, I had hope with the fins, now both teams suck.

Hey Crazy...don't be crazy now ! lol

Garrard has the tendancy to choke in the big games.

LOL At Jack, Love the referance :Favre-100 years- avg QB rating 86.0

100 years... Great..

Boo hoo hoo hoo why aren't you all hating on the Dolphins? That is all we have to do in here and you guys can't even get that right? Haven't you understood my last thousand posts? The Dolphins suck! Why must some of you grasp on to any sliver of hope when it is so obvious we are doomed. Please act accordingly and make sure all of your posts are like mine, very negative and condescending. When will you people wake up and realize that if we complain and whine, about things that are out of our control, in a piddly paper blog, we will create change? What is wrong with some of you! Why don't you want to see that everything is horrible and then spend your entire day regurgitating all of the bad things over and over. THERE IS ONLY BAD! THERE IS NO GOOD! WAKE UP YOU DUMB POSTERS! Listen to me, the pied piper of stupidity!

First off, Matt Moore played well last year. He is a solid backup at worst. This whole Garrard and Smith thing is redic. Neither is worth the time. Instead of chasing players that wont improve our team, we should have signed some players that would have helped us. We didnt get ANY reciever...Brandon Lloyd just signed with the pats for $4 mil a year...we couldnt come up with that? Dallas clark...no interest? Still no right tackle. Still no safety. If we miss on Flynn, still no QB. No wideouts. Yes, we have options with the number 8 pick...but our front office has fumbled the ball so far. Not willing to make ANY moves? We should be progressing each season but weve been stuck in neutral for quite some time. Woah.

Garrad chokes in big games? He was in a big game?

The Signal,

I've only heard Armando say that Smith turned down $8 million a year. I haven't read that anywhere else. My understanding is they were working on a deal with Smith and starting working on Manning mid-stream behind his back. I don't see Smith as an $8 million a year QB. I wouldn't want any part of that. I think there will be a limited market for Smith....Seattle, Miami, maybe Cleveland. I don't see him getting anything close to that but I could be wrong.

Matter of fact, Garrard doesn't turn the ball over that much. Most INT's he ever threw was 15 in one season. He has never been upside down on TD's to INT's.

Flynn threw 5 INT's in 3 games played. 4 in 2 games started.

Tracy, I've sad the same thing in the past 3 weeks, I think Hollywood Ross is doing a "Major League" with the almighty Air-Breathers.....

Could there be a worse NFL franchise? Flynn gone, Alex Smith, Garrad?.....really....

I applaud the Dolphins for exploring all options at QB. Not sold on ANY of these FA's but at least go through the process. Much prefer drafting a kid but you do need a vet to back Moore up.

This is stupid...

Start Matt Moore, draft a QB

Stop wasting money on nonsense players, and sign a playmaker.

Peyton Manning also chokes in big games. How many pick sixes did he throw in the playoffs and a superbowl that lost the game for INDY? I lost count.

All you so called Dolphin fans on this site talk about how desperate the Dolphins are. The only desperate people are all you phony dolphin fans that post such moronic negative opinions. With all the teams that that continually hunt for better coaches or GM's each year I am amazed that all of you expert critics get overlooked. All I hear is reference to our great Marino as our last franchise quarterback, and how many Super Bowls did we win? What I see is the Dolphins drafting young talent and trying to get depth at O-line and D-line. Some pan out some don't just like many QB's over the years. The reason you bring in Smith, Gerrard, and any other re-tread QB is because you are in negotiations with Flynn. The Dolphins are sending a message that they are willing to look elsewhere and wait for a better opportunity for a franchise QB rather than pay Flynn whatever he wants, which most of you would slaughter if he did. Competition is a great equallizer with only 1 winner eg: Manning. Be patient my fellow fans our worst scenario is to go with Matt Moore who statistically was a top 10 QB in the final 9 games and wait for a better opportunity for the Franchise QB. Better than Aaron Rodgers saying Matt Flynn will make some team happy he is a top (15) QB. Wow lets give our wallets away for that one!!

Concur w/dolfdan13.....

Craig,

Here is part of an article posted on pft about an hour ago. I had also seen other stories regarding the offer.

Citing multiple sources, Barrows also reports that Smith is “upset” at the 49ers for their pursuit of top free agent quarterback Peyton Manning, and there is “a growing belief” Smith might not return to San Francisco, even if the Niners whiff on Manning.

Before their aggressive pursuit of Manning, the 49ers had proposed Smith a three-year, $24 million contract. While interest from Seattle and Miami is somewhat promising, it’s hard to imagine Smith commanding a better offer from either team.

There are fans of teams like the Dolphins & the Seahawks that are so desperate to find a quality QB that they think they know how good Flynn will be as a starter. The truth is we don't. The Cardinals were VERY dumb to make that trade for Kolb just like we were VERY dumb to trade for AJ Feely. And it's not like this team has gone straight downhill after Ross bought this team b/c we sucked before long before that. We did go 1-15 when Huzienga was the owner & he's the also the one who hired Parcells & Co., Wannstadt, Saban, & Cam Cameron. How did that work out????

IMO--The biggest mistake Ross has made was to keep Ireland. I hope they will both prove me wrong.

the decision not to acquire viable WRs after trading Marshall is a real mystery. surely no one, not even Ireland, trade their no: 1 receiver without considering a replacement.

No, the dolphins are going to draft either Blackmon (by moving up) or someone else by trading down.
alternatively WR is supposed to be deep in talent for this years draft. Maybe the dolphins have identified some 2nd or 3rd rounders with great upside...

How did Stephen Ross become a billionaire? Seriously. Any other owner would of cleaned house and started over, but insted he keeps an average at best GM and forces him on what seems to be a very bright football mind coach. And let's not forget Ireland's preference was the O-coordinator of the Broncos. I'm pretty sure the pitch that was given to Philbin didn't include David Garrard or Alex Smith as the starting QB, let alone Matt Moore or Ryan Tannehill.

Dolphinatic...we aren't concerned how desperate they are as much as we are how inept and illogical they are.... or would you call asking a draftable WR if his mother is a prostitute an effective bargaining/communication skill ?

I would rather trade down and trade QB Weeden in the late 1st. I know he is 28 already but he is the most nfl ready qb and would fit the new system. Then next year draft another qb in the 1st for the future. I like Georgia QB Aaron Murray

Matter of fact, Garrard was drafted in the fourth round. Funny how he sucks but a 7th rounder doesn't suck.

Boo hoo hoo hoo why aren't you all hating on the Dolphins? That is all we have to do in here and you guys can't even get that right? Haven't you understood my last thousand posts? The Dolphins suck! BK...that tactic failed with the Pat White experiment, but it has at least the possibility of merit...shows improvisational thinking at the least..

The Signal,

Thanks for the news on Smith. To me he's not an $8 million a year QB but who knows how much guaranteed money is in there. I would just have a hard time with him counting $8 mil against the cap.

I also haven't read where he turned the contract down. I think if Smith had in fact being offered that from SF he would have snapped it up in a second. I think they were always thinking about Manning in the back of their minds.

improvisational

Posted by: Buster | March 18, 2012 at 03:52 PM

that's a big word for you there Buster bottoms

I mean really, top 15 is like saying top 47%. Who else thinks Rodgers just wants to get rid of the competition at Green Bay? What was Rodgers going to say? Flynn is a top 32 QB? He couldn't even say the man was top 10. That should tell you something right there.

"I've only heard Armando say that Smith turned down $8 million a year. I haven't read that anywhere else. Craig,

It was reported by more outlets than Armando at the Herald that Alex Smith was offered a 3 yr/$24 Million
deal.

I honestly don't understand why Alex Smith isn't worth $8 Million a year. He went 13-3 last year w/o great WR's & if not for Kyle Williams mistakes they would have been playing in a SB. People always want to give QB's the credit of being winners but with Alex Smith it appears Dolphin fans aren't willing to do that. Why is that???? It was Smith who had to go out & win those games not Harbaugh.

If Philbin is the offensive coach I think he is then he can certainly have success with Smith as his starter.

By letting players walk because it is not the right price for Ireland, what Quality FA's are going to want to play here. With that thinking,Miami will be left with no one. How can anyone defend Ireland? Other teams are improving by signing players, while Ireland tries to low ball. Great business strategy, how has that worked for the past 4yrs?

Thanx Mik....I spent a few brain cells over it..and wallah...it came to me... :-)

No way Flynn throws 6 TD's if Suh was playing that day. That was a Pro Bowl Game.

THE NECK

THE MECHANIC

THE DENTEST

DROOPY DOG

THE CELLAR.

I wish they would just pass on all of them, leapfrog StL in the 1st rd and grab WR Blackmon, then pick up QB Weeden in the 2nd.

Both teams were already in the playoffs. They not gonna get themselves hurt in a meaningless game. People say Flynn is good because its impossible to throw 6 TD's and not have any talent. Yet, the same folks don't think Marshall had talent even though he caught 4 TD's in the pro bowl. That GB/DET game was a pro bowl game.

What a joke! Stick with Moore! Draft a QB! Round up a WR in free agency while there's still cap room! That's too simple for Ireland!

I agree. Right on. Stick with Moore, draft Tannehill or Weedon and let's get the show on the road. Weedon is good also. Fluck these other clowns.

Confidentail Memo
From: Coach Philbin
To: Mike Sherman

Re: WTF

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm saving my money. We're going to be the next scapegoats for this mess.

I mean, first there was the Manning fiasco. Ross and Jeff had to beg Marino to ask Manning to even grant us an interview as a personal favor to Marino. It would not surprise me if Ross paid a half million under the table to Manning just so the interview lasted more thant ten minutes.

Then we go to Flynn, Smith, and Gerrald. Good gosh, are we going to have to fly to the farm and beg Favre to play next year? Moore? If so, we better do fumble recovery drills everyday for OUR offense.

We both know elite QB's are a rare find. But why not upgrade the O-Line with Winston, a true stud who actually wanted to play here? Jeff offered him next to nothing. Jeff then signed "acorn" - Hicks, to be our OG or OT. Is this going to be Columbo 2.0 or what? I thought we wanted to improve our 30th ranked OL without having to use yet another 1st round pick to do so.

Getting rid of the ONLY talented WR we have without getting another one in free agency is going to make 2012 interesting. I thought they wanted us to use a West Coast Offense, not 2.1 yard runs up the middle and then attempt 10-yard Hail Mary passes.

I'm going to be sick if I hear Jeff talk about 'value' and 'QB' in the same sentance again. Everytime he talks about a skill position, the word 'value' is used again and again. I think it is just a way to be cheap.

I mean, we're up against the cap and we have almost no elite talent whatsoever? What's wrong with that picture, especially when our actual cash payout for salaries last year was near the bottom of the league.

We have no O-Line and there's not a WR or TE on this roster that could be the waterboy in Green Bay or New England.

The defense is supposed to be the strong unit of our team, and it is -- if the other team does not pass or is down to their emergency QB. Nothing is changing there. Smith and Davis are not going anywhere and they are not getting better or younger.

The draft. Hahahaha. Jeff is focusing like a laser on the OL and DL and LB positions. We'll be lucky to find a WR or TE. Let alone a QB.

We've got our work cut out for us. To paraphase Jeff's old boss, "It's going to be tough to make a West Coast Offense out of chicken stuff."

This is like working for Lions when they had Matt Millen.

Ithaca Phin Fan....that would make too much sense....especially now that Marshall is gone...but I salute your tenacity.....( p.s. I threw that word in there for Mik's sake)

Buster mom just called and said she's on her way to pick you up for Mother Boy.

What a bunch of idiots. I cant' believe Ireland gets paid. The fans should boycott and not show up for any games.

cleveland can't take Tannehill at #4, at 4 you can't pass on Blackmon or Clairbourne or even Richardson. Tannehill should be there at #8

Gob...great ....call her on the cell and ask her to pick me up a Happy Meal...:-).......

"the decision not to acquire viable WRs after trading Marshall is a real mystery. surely no one, not even Ireland, trade their no: 1 receiver without considering a replacement.

Pete,

It's very difficult to understand how Ireland didn't identify a WR in FA since he was trying to trade Marshall before that last incident in Manhattan. I'm not saying he should have chased Vincent Jackson & paid $11 Million a year for him but there were guys like Brandon Lloyd who just signed with the Patriots for $4 Million a year that were available.

The biggest need on this team--according to Ross & Ireland--was at starting QB but now it's starting QB & starting WR. Plus there's still no clear starting RG or RT either.

Done, don't forget your stuffed Gorilla that army gave you for sand racing ;p

We Have Draft Picks,

I would argue that the Niners were 13-3 much more on their defence and running game, the weak divison they play in and strength of schedule. Sorry, Alex Smith with hi 17 TD passes and and slightly more than 3,000 yards is NOT the reason they won their division last year. If he was they would have signed him up early and they wouldn't be looking at a risky Manning as a upgrade. We can argue this point all day but those are the facts. You bring up the playoff games against the Giants but it was Smith's inability to convert in the Red Zone and make passes when it counted that kept the game close. Go back and watch the game if you like. Smith, at $8 million a year, doesn't make this team better....sorry, not buying that.

Lydon Murtha will be the Dolphins starting RT and will rank in the top 8 at his position this year.

We Have Draft Picks,

One other point, 'HE' didn't go 13-3 last year. The TEAM did, of which he was the QB. If you're trying to make out that he was the reason, averaging ONE TD a game, sorry bud but that's just wrong.

I am past the point of being a disgruntled fan, I am FULLY GRUNTLED!!!
