Dolphins QB search now in spin mode

And now David Garrard is scheduled to visit the Dolphins on Monday, The Herald's Barry Jackson has confirmed.

Two things:

What is it with the Dolphins and quarterbacks with neck issues? First Peyton Manning and now the club is flirting with a player who had bulging disc surgery last year. First thing the team will do with this visit? Get him to a doctor to see what the deal is.

Another thought I have is that this a kick-the-tires visit, if it even happens because I'm still expectant on Matt Flynn making a decision either by this evening or tomorrow morning.

Beyond that, the Dolphins QB search after Peyton Manning can be described in two different ways. I will describe both ways and let you decide which to believe.

The positive spin: The Dolphins know no one left on the free agency market is a franchise quarterback. They believe Flynn might be a good player and are willing to pay him as such to compete with Matt Moore. But the contract offer they made Flynn's agent safeguards the team against Matt Flynn being a tremendous bust and playing like the seventh-round draft pick he was years ago. This is protecting oneself for the good of the franchise. So the Dolphins, so far unable to get Flynn to buy into the idea of coming to Miami and competing for a starting job, are kicking the tires on practically anyone else on the market. They are doing due diligence. They have a set price they're willing to pay and they're sticking by their convictions. They'll get somebody. But they'll not overpay for anybody.

The negative spin: The Dolphins couldn't close on Peyton Manning. The Dolphins couldn't close on Matt Flynn. They probably won't be able to close on Alex Smith because he's going to want to get paid and they're not going to overpay him -- at least until their desperation kicks in. And now they're in full-fledged grasp at straws mode by checking out Garrard, a guy who didn't want to play for them last year for the price Miami was willing to pay. On the Garrard thing, I was told by several team sources that money was not an issue in getting him that there was other factors. A source close to Garrard said the exact opposite. That Miami underwhelmed in their offer to him and he didn't want to come to South Florida for that small of a prorated deal. This was, you may recall, in October when the Dolphins were desperate after Chad Henne's season-ending injury. So what has changed? Well, Garrard is more desperate now. No one has been serious about him even visiting until the Dolphins did it. And the Dolphins are just kicking tires. And we're supposed to be enthusiastic about this?

Those are the two possible spins on what is happening in Davie. You decide.

First...I think Matt Moore is a capable Quarterback. I love the idea of adding David Garrard at a reasonable price to compete with Moore. This allows you to address additional team needs in FA... Matt Flynn is an unproven commodity!!! I think Ireland is handling these negotiations perfectly...DO NOT OVERSPEND ON AN UNPROVEN COMMODITY!!!...Flynn is not Peyton Manning!!! He's a 7th round draft pick that has played in 2 meaningless mop up games!!!...At least Garrard has played effectively in the league for years!!!

EVER SINCE IRELAND CAME HERE THE FINS HAVE BEEN VERY SLOW TO SIGN PLAYERS ..REMEMBER A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WHEN THEY DIDN'T SIGN A DB THAN SIGN ERIC GREEN WHEN THE FANS STARTED GETTING RESTLESS...WHERE ARE THERE HEADS?..THE REASON THEY'RE SLOW IS BECAUSE IRELAND ONLY LIKES HIS DRAFT PICKS..LAST WEEK ON THE SPORTS BUZZ .IRELAND SAID HOW CLYDE GATES IS READY TO BREAK OUT..THAN THIS WEEK NO MANNIGHAM OR ANY RECIEVER..WATCH IN TRAINING CAMP HE SAYS THAT JULIUS PRUITT AND MARLON MOORE ARE READY TO BREAK OUT..THE FINS SHOULD HAVE TRADED THE WHOLE DRAFT FOR THE SECOND PICK GRIFFIN..THAN SPEND THE FREE AGENT MONEY ON A BIG NAME WR OR PASS RUSHER !THIS WILL NOT CHANGE UNTIL IRELAND LEAVES AND THEY GET A GENERAL MANAGER THAT KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING ..IRELAND ONLY CARES ABOUT THE DRAFT CAUSE HE'S A SCOUT AND IS TRYING TO IMPROVE HIS RESUME FOR HIS NEXT JOB!

Craig,

I agree with most of what you are saying regarding the Niners going 13-3.

However, I have read multiple reports stating the Niners made the offer, and Smith decided to let the offer sit on the table for a bit.

We Have Draft Picks-------good post...

ACORNS

BUFFET OF KNOWLEDGE

SOUP DU JOUR

Ireland will not have a "next job". As long as Ross is owner Ireland will be here. They are joined at the hip, well not quite the hip but in that general area.

Hey Einsteins,

If we take Tannehill #8 1st rd it means we wont be drafting another qb for the next 4yrs. Even if he turns out to be a complete bust. Remember, it takes at least 3yrs to make that determination.

Adding insult to injury, Matt Moore probably goes into free agency next year knowing he doesnt have a starting qb future in Miami. Tannehill's not going to have a very long learning process. He's probably your starter in 2013 when Moore bolts for free agency.

Be careful what you wish for! LOL

Aloco, Summing it up wih just a few words.

YG......I thought you left ?!!??

Craig,

I think Smith may have held out signing the contract because he was hoping it would cover more than three years.

Guaranteed if we let Matt Moore go today. He would have far more interest amongst Nfl gm's than Matt Flynn! LOL

...and Einstein's reminds me of bagels...and that reminded me i am hungry...so now I'm out ...LOLOLOL

I still remember all the crap talk around here on Matt Moore when he was brought in AND when Kyle Orton wasn't...

Can't you ever right anything positive? Spin mode? What a retard article. The Phins have to replace Henne and need some competition for Moore. Not every FA they bring in will sign with Miami. Thus, they are SMART and COMPETENT to bring in as many FA's as possible to fill the void left by Henne. Why don't you recognize the smart decisions and write something positive you negative nellie.

BUSTER, YG/DB/LOL/MANY OTHER NAME WILL NOT BE LAVING, HE ON COMPUTER 24/&, HE HAS GOVERMENT GRANT FROMM OBAMA THATR ALOW HIM ACCESS ALL DAY/NIGHT, HE"LL POSAT UNDER OTHER NAMES.HE AND CUBENMENECE SHRE A TRAILER IN MISSASSIPI FUNDED BY GOVERMENT, THEY ALSO RECEVE GOVERMENT CHESE AND 3 DAY OLD BREAD.

ALoco gvmnt cheese and stale bread?.......I used to be hungry ...LMAO.......laters

Now to all idiots that want Flynn. You can see he is not all that Philibin claimed he was because they would have signed him after Manning turned them down.

If you over spend on Flynn or Smith then next year you are saying that we will not ever draft barkley or Landry. You can not use all your next years cap space up on a qb unless you are going to give him two maybe three years. aka Henne.

Go Dolphins! Stick with Moore let Gerrard back him up or prove that he is better. Enough with the Madness!! Still would rather see Vince Young make a trip into Miami.

Anybody else miss Jay Feidler???????

We have known this for some time but now it is becoming more clear for Everybody. Ireland has never been the problem, Ross is.

Hey Einsteins! I write that because I'm so much smarter than all of you and you know it. Didn't that just make you want to read my post so badly. I always like to start off a good post by insulting everyone's intelligence. It's what makes a douche a douche.

Our best 2012 qb solution is to name Matt Moore starter and make the 2011 practice squad qb the backup. Clean house of any contracts $4 million a year or over.

Then trade Jake Long for a 1st rd'er, trade out of the 1st rd this year. Then hopefull we go 2-14 with the 1st overall pick next year(2013) "WITH THRE 1ST RD PICKS" AND HOPEFULL 2 2ND RD PICKS.

AND ABOUT $30 MILLION IN CAP SPACE IN HAND.

Not to get off the subject but who would you rather have

Mila Kunis

Or

Mila Jovovich ?

Now to all of the idiots that think this is a different poster, smarten up! It's not only Yesterdays Dong that starts out all of his posts by insulting everyone in here, I do it too! Wake Up!

"One other point, 'HE' didn't go 13-3 last year. The TEAM did, of which he was the QB. If you're trying to make out that he was the reason, averaging ONE TD a game, sorry bud but that's just wrong."

They have a great team IMO but you can't win 13 games in the NFL w/o a competent starting QB. Sanchez is getting paid a LOT more than $8 Million a year & he's not as good as Smith. Kevin Kolb is making more than that!!! There's NO WAY we're going to find a starting QB for less than $8 Million a year. As for Flynn he has two career starts so I'm not sure what his asking is/or should be at this point.

Look at it this way. Ross might not know Football, but he certainly knows $$$$. Now, don't anybody tell me he did not know that the overspendig would put is in tight. You following? Good. Why on Earth would Ross allow that to happen? Now, now, you know the answer. We have known about this for some time also.

Yesterday's Dong,

Ask your mother about me. Yesterday's Dong was so great she still wants more today.

Is that insulting enuff? Your mother doesnt think so! LOL

Many said before the free agent period season began that this probably was not the year for Miami to get their qB. Many wanted to just stick with Moore for a little longer. Fix the rest of the mess and personally I think they are doing that.

They brought in players to try to fix the hole in the middle of the D and strengthen the back field. They signed Solia even though we all thought he was history

Really as it stands today if we pick up a stud receiver and a couple o-linemen we should be better.

I vote we just stick with Moore and find a backup aka Gerrard, Young, crap pick a name the draft will fill out the rest of the problems just like our coach said, build through the draft. You guys preach it all the time on this board. Lets walk the walk. Crap how about letting Moore be the starter and get Weeden in the third.

This isn't the prettiest of processes but they make it work all the time in Green Bay. So in Philbin I trust if he absolutely needed Flynn he would have him.

Go Dolphins!!

Not to get off the subject but who would you rather have
Mila Kunis
Or
Mila Jovovich ?

Both.

Anyway you slice it--since Huzienga bought the team from the Robies--the Dolphins organization is sucking the life out of its fan base. Ticket sales will be anemic this season.

VERY insightful. You will appreciate it.

Dear Dolfans,

Your team stinks to high hell and it doesnt appear the stench will clear anytime soon.

What about Dennis Dixon? - Steelers third string QB - he's available. He's next.

"This isn't the prettiest of processes but they make it work all the time in Green Bay. So in Philbin I trust if he absolutely needed Flynn he would have him."

There's NO WAY you know that about Philbin in regards to Flynn. Philbin doesn't sign the checks.

All of my Dolphin jerseys are now "former dolphin" jerseys. Hope no one bought Jake Long jerseys. He'll too be gone next year. LOL

miami will not pay 8 million a season for Flynn ... no team will! I bet the most they have offered him is 4 million.

Wouldn't it be sweet if Alex Smith decided to sign with any other team and at the same time Peyton decides to sign elsewhere also... leaving the 49ers without a QB. lol

I would be p issed off as heck if i were Smith with them bringing in Peyton for a test drive.

WAIT UNTIL YOU EINSTIENS WATCH JAKE LONG WALK AWAY WITH NOTHING IN RETURN NEXT YEAR.

WE'LL SEE HOW MANY OF YOU NUMB NUTS SAY IRELAND'S DOING A GREAT JOB THEN! LOL

Well we do need a third string QB so....

GOOD THING MIKE POUNCEY'S "TRAPPED" HERE FOR AT LEAST 4YRS! LOL

THIS IS REGGIE BUSH' LAST SEASON IN MIAMI TOO! LOL

I think if Philbin REALLY loved this guy - they would up their offer to around 5.5 or 6 million. He's probably not sure either. My feeling is they have to take chance with the guy - what do they have to lose? - if he can't succeed under his former OC here - he can't succeed anywhere. The Dolphins need to get him in and also draft a QB this year and next year and the year after that if necessary.

2013 WE'LL BE WITHOUT MATT MOORE, JAKE LONG, AND REGGIE BUSH NEARLY FOR SURE.

BUT IRELAND LOVER KEEPING LICKING HIS "ACORN" SACK! LOL

I just can't understand how the Dolphins have no impact players at all yet they are up against the salary cap - talk about overpaying for mediocrity?

NEXT YEAR WE'LL FIND OUT IF THOMAS IS A REAL RB. REGGIE BUSH WILL BOLT IN FA. PROBABLY TO THE NINERS(CALI-REUNION BABY!)

I might be annoying and stupid
But I am interesting and goofy

One day I will lick a man's hairy ass

FATTY PARCELLS,

WE DO HAVE ONE IMPACT PLAYER. JAKE LONG. BUT EXPECT HIM TO BOLT NEXT YEAR(2013) IF THESE BOZOS CANT GET LOCKED INTO AN EXTENSION BY THE END OF THIS FOOTBALL YEAR.

BUSH AND MATT MOORE PROBABLY LEAVE IN FA IN 2013 TOO. YOU CAN ALMOST BANK ON IT. ESPECIALLY IF THE DOLPHINS CANT GET JAKE LONG LOCKED UP BEFORE SEASONS END.

Because the Dolphins have done so poorly drafting. They've had to compensate trying to use free agency. Thats where all of the cap money's gone. Havent you guys been paying attention? LOL

95% OF THE DRAFTEES STILL ON THE TEAM ARE "UNDER PERFORMING". HAS ANYONE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION? LOL

Buy your season tickets Dolfans...

Ross knows that there are many blind faith stooges out there.

Everyone RELAX!!! Flynn made under 1million last year, this team is offering over 5 million to him,and he's not getting a better offer. He's going to sign with Miami. Smith is already asking for more than Ireland will pay. Ireland is an idiot sometimes, but he's a cheap idiot. Remember he did not overpay for Orton? We will get Flynn, and then we will draft a pass rusher #1. as far as the WRs are concerned They are a dime a dozen. Everyone knows that. Marshall was not conducive to this locker room mentally and in the west coast offense we are gonna run.

IS STEVEN ROSS SELLING TICKETS OR BRIDGES ON THE CHEAP? VERY DIFFICULT TO TELL. LOL

Philpin might recommend Flynn with all his heart, but he's a Coach. Ireland is an evaluator of talent and if he doesn't agree, specially if the price is not right, forget it.

IF SOME OF YOU THINK ROSS/IRELAND IS DOING SUCH A GREAT JOB. DONT TELL US ABOUT IT. GO BUY SOME BRIDGES. OPPS, I MEAN TICKETS! LOL

Mr. Ross--Listen to your brilliant fans so that you can sign great stars like Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn!!

Funny, 99% of us would take 1 million a year to sit behind Rodgers. The older Rodgers gets the more likely he is to get injured. I'd sit behind him waiting for my shot. Just like Brady did.

I GUARANTEE THE IDIOTS HERE SAYING IRELAND'S DOING A GOOD JOB ARENT SEASON TICKET HOLDERS!

THAT'S WHY THEY'RE SPEWING THIS GARBAGE IN A "TOTALLY FREE" PUBLIC BLOG!LOL

"I just can't understand how the Dolphins have no impact players at all yet they are up against the salary cap - talk about overpaying for mediocrity?"

That's the question that even the biggest, most delusional homer can't answer. All I know is that while the Patriots just added Brandon Lloyd if we wind up w/o Smith & Flynn then we can pencil in another 8-8 or worse season. I just can't see Moore playing better w/o an established Number One or Number Two WR.

I'm also trying hard to understand why Philbin or any coach for that matter would want to be the HC in Miami. Sure he's making more money but this may just kill his chances of ever getting a HC job in the NFL again.

ALL WHO SAY IRELAND'S DOING A GOOD JOB. I CHALLENGE YOU TO EMAIL ME A COPY OF YOUR SEASON TICKET PASS. LOL
