Dolphins taking two-pronged approach to QB issue

The Dolphins are holding out hope, albeit slim at this point, that they can still land Peyton Manning. But they are not so naive as to do nothing else in case bad news comes.

That is why the club has today reached out to free agent quarterback Matt Flynn to discuss the basic parameters of a contract and seek permission to speak with the player himself. The club had coach Joe Philbin, who has coached Flynn in Green Bay, call his former pupil to express interest in him. The club obviously also talked to Flynn's agent.

And all this while everyone awaits a verdict from Manning.

Earlier today a Dolphins source described this as a "delicate" balance for handling the situation. No lie! The Dolphins don't want to offend Manning by making him believe they've moved on before they're actually told they are out. And they don't want to be so inactive as to lose out on Flynn who is now Plan B behind Manning.

It is obviously helping that Flynn wants to come to Miami. Yes, someone would like to come to Miami. It is also helping that the Flynn camp believes the Dolphins will help set the market for the free agent. And, of course, there's Flynn comfort level with Philbin and his system.

So we are waiting the final result of all this.

If you want me to speculate, I'd say the Dolphins end up with Flynn rather than Manning. Just a guess. Nothing more.

I hope we end up with Manning....but its nice to HEAR that somebody WANTS to come here...

If you want me to guess I'm saying they call Chad Henne and ask him if he wants to compete with Kyle Orton.

Manning needs to get off his arse and make a stupid decision already. This is Jeff Fisher all over again!!

Someone likes us, they really really do !!!

its obvious that Flynn wants to come to Miami... where did he say that part? I dont see where flynn said that

Will Flynn be brought in as the starter or to compete, I mean illegitimately, with Moore?

I am still wondering if anyone other than Philbin sees Flynn as a franchise QB.

You really thought Manning was going to make a decision like this in 6 days? Manning holds all the chips regardless of what team we're talking about. He's not going to be pressured into making a decision. That much was said after his visit with Denver and AZ.

mando does not want manning.. he has made that clear

The Brandon Marshall trade makes perfect sense given their recent 3rd round history in the draft. Look no further than.....ummmm, well....there's uh......hmmmm

If Manning gets offended....eff him.....

I am offended that he didn't make his decision by 4 PM today....

My god. Please give us Peyton. Please

Something tells me that Manning will fail for wherever he lands, it's been a year and no football. He was great but his time is up, he's gonna end up like Terrell Owens. While on the other hand Flynn becomes next Tom Brady

Hey Jeff Ireland!! Abby-normal called, says he wants his brain back!!!!

So they tell mando to be patient for flynn? I am done

I want either Manning or Flynn otherwise we are doomed for another 2-3 years possibly more!!!

Miami Dolphins Laughing stock of the NFL.

I'm sure I could run the team better than those jokers Ireland and Ross.

Manning is going to play for the Allen, Tx Wranglers in the IFL? LOL. Just saw T.O. at the NM Stars vs. Allen Wranglers game this past weekend. Dude is completely washed up, but he packed the stands.

we get flynn. i am done

I said this on the last post too but I get the feeling the Marshall trade was to gt more ammo to trade up for Blackmon.

We might have to trade as high as 4 to get him and the worst best case would be a trade with Tampa at 5 to get Blackmon.

The longer this thing holds out...the more it favors AZ....they don't have to cut Kolb until saturday...so the can hold out the longest.....

Armando, is Eric Winston in the cards for us?

Texas I was the first to say that once announced, I jsut dont want flynn throwing to him.

ESPN reporting now that Peyton is demanding that each of the owners throw the ball and send him be video.

What would MadDog say about all this Manning drama? I miss his commentaries!

Guys, don't worry. I am almost finished with my invention! It's a WAYBACK Machine. Dialing the clock back to 1974 to try this all over again, turns out we keep Csonka, Kiick and Warfield and win another 3 straight Super Bowls!! (a little Advice, buy Microsoft stock during its IPO)

So now Omar is posting that the Browns and Miami are in contract talks with Flynn.

Good article by Peter King on Matt

Who the heck is Flynn going to throw to if he comes here?

At least with Manning there's the chance of getting Wayne as well. Flynn comes with nobody.

I'm still shocked they traded BM. This team lacked a #1 receiver for more than a decade, they finally get one in his prime and have him locked up for 6 years, and what do they do? Trade him!

Go for Flynn. The fact that Miami has to fly to Indy to meet with Manning was a complete disrespect. The sucker lives in Miami but couldn't make it to the facility to interview. No respect. time to move out. You've lost trading up for the number 2 pick, lost out on getting Manning and that leaves just Flynn. I hate this. Ross has made it where no one wants to come to Miami. Great... just great...

Ithaca Phin Fan I share your disgust. If I was still living in Owego I would zip on over to Ithaca and cry in a beer with you.

Oh. Ok. Now I see why wee traded a pro bowl receiver. It was to clear cap room for the next Scott Mitchell.

It's so hard to be a Dolphins fan.

I hadn't thought about that...i guess it could be seen as disrespect to make Philbin and crew fly to Indy when he has been vacationing in Miami....

But according to the Armando reports..they were NEVER gonna do their pitch @ sunlife stadium anyway....but still a good point....

I think all of this is a smoke screen to ENSURE the GODDELL won't be able to levy ANY tampering charges against the FINS when he signs...

Seems like the Phins don't want to part with Paul Soliai so easily. At the end, they may have to, but they are putting up a good fight.

I dont give a shitz if Manning gets offended. Cut your losses and move on to flynn.

from a philadelphia Dolphins fan,

you guys are probably the most uneducated fan base in the league. its becoming comical. The Marshall trade was good value (whats that word mean?),and you have NO idea what moves will follow. Be patient. We save $11 million by getting Marshall off the books and get two 3rd round picks. For reference, Brandon lloyd went for a sixth rounder last year. It CAN be a smart move pending on what follows...

Now, I realize we are without a true number 1. We have a top ten draft pick. If we end up with Flynn, Winston, Justin Blackmon and a pass rusher we will be an improved team. And that scenario is very realistic. Not to mention we aren't even out of Peyton sweepstakes. Be patient. Stop trying to run Ireland and Ross out of town because it will do this team no good. Find another outlet for your ignorance.

the rams apparently love blackmon.....so, it seems far-fetched he would fall to 8. this makes the trade of marshall a bit more puzzling. i can understand wanting to clear cap space, but for what? a right tackle? flynn is fine, as long as he comes with greg jennings and jermichael finley. otherwise, it's a toss-up between him and moore.

i loved when the dolphins got Marshall as i felt the number 1 receiver issue was put to bed. With all the drops in the end zone and off the field drama, i don't blame Miami for cutting ties with him. For those who bash Dolphins management for the return they got, remember that Randy Moss Left Oakland for only a 4th rd choice after giving up a first rd pick the year prior. With the cap number Marshall was carrying and all his baggage, i thought 2-3rd's was a good return. Those extra thirds will allow us to move up in the draft to maybe get Blackmon, who is younger than Marshall, doesnt have the offseason baggage and will cost far less at this time. Wait till everything unfolds before making snap judgements.

Jared, we ARE educated. We have been duped into waiting to see what is behind door number 2 before!! And do you know what is ALWAYS behind door number 2? A number 2!!!!!!!

Can you speculate on what's taking so long to see where Manning is going? Has he already met with the Titans? That would be the only hold up right? Its not like he needs to consult his wife or anything. She gonna go where the money takes her husband.

maybe Archie needs to sign off on it first.

Ok Ive come back a little calmer. Im not pissed Marshall was traded its the value Ireland got for him, he couldnt get at least a 2nd round, the guy came off a pro bowl season.

Anyways go for Flynn, if he bombs we'll be back in the cellar drafting Jones or Barkley, Manning will give you at most 3 years, he's old and his body wont be able to take licks.

I don't know. I'm looking at Brandon Lloyds stats. One good year out of eight. Denver lucky they got a 6th round pick for him.

So, if Blackmon is not there, we grab Kendall Wright, austin. I mean, you RG3 lovers must know who Kendall Wright is. Don't you?

Thank god

Marshal has to be about cap space. I'm not pleased we only got 3rd round for him, but it does show the FO wants to make some moves. And that's a good thing. We'll see what they have up their sleeve, now.

Manning, who knows. He's a prima donna who is going to string everyone along through FA when he knows people have to make decisions on a QB. But it's good to hear Armando be honest and say he would just be guessing if he knew where Manning's landing. Another sportswriter who said Miami was out of it, is changing his tune and saying...I didn't say that! after Miami met with Manning. I think some of you guys should be forced to eat soap or something for all the stories I've heard the last couple weeks on this subject.

I've wanted Flynn all along. Mannings window is too small.

We just traded one of the best wide recievers in the league for what? We were supposed to add a big time wide reciever to the offense with Bradon Marshall. It seems were going back words.

Good post...but the FIN FANS are NO DIFFERNT or LESS EDUCATED than any OTHER fan base...to include YOURS that want to run Andy Reid out town...the SAME Andy Reid that takes the Eagles to the playoffs almost every year....

I used to live in B'more...and they win 12 games every year...in a VERY tough division....and as soon as they LOSE a game......especially to the Steelers....the fans want Harbaugh on the first thing smoking....

SO FANS are FANS...regardless of location...or education.....

Excuse Me. Is Hartline now our #1
Can i get a refund for my SeasTX, i bought them last week thinking Marshall/Wayne /Manning

It is amazing to me how People here spit their BS just because they didn't like the decisions and to be spiteful. I always thought DD was a serious poster until he said Boldin was traded for a 6th round draft choice. Who can believe that?

oscar, my post mentions nothing of rg3. kendall wright is not worthy of the 8th pick.
inflated numbers because of griffin's ability to extend plays (look for example at video of the texas game...) blackmon is a stud who will be a no. 1 wide receiver in the nfl for 10 years.

At first glance the idea of trading a #1 receiver for two third round picks makes little sense. Especially given his intial cost (two 2nd picks) and the overall production he has had. Yes he had some bad drops but he was a Pro Bowler for god sakes.

So, IF the fins parlay this into something huge then good for them. But IF not then this leadership team is going to go further into the abyss of stupidity. I for one will be one fan who waits to declare final judgement but this sounds a lot to me like the brilliant move to move Welker out. Yeah we used a 7th rounder to get him, he was very productive but then traded him to a division rival for a 2nd rounder. Some on this site swore it was a sound move then. Now what are those morons saying? Oh yeah, what did we get for that 2nd rounder? Oh yeah, that's right...thought so.

Finally, if the Fins were so adamant to get rid of Marshall I can't believe we couldn't have used him in a trade to St. Louis for RG3. A first rounder, 2nd rounder and Marshall all now is better for St. Louis than what Washington gave them. This really seems very wrong to me.

But...again....I'll wait to scream out my window

Manning is making a monkey out of every team that interviewed him. Self centered and arrogant and he isn't even in game shape. Screw him. Shut the door.

If we wind up with Flynn, the PHINS WIN! But who does he throw to?

This bodes well for me. I am declaring myself eligible for the 2012 draft. My pro day is up in Frostburg, Maryland tomorrow. I expect to run about a 5.2 40 (not bad for a 45 year old). I anticipate that my performance will get me noticed by Ireland and he will convert that 3rd rounder into his next wideout: ME!!!

So, keeping optimistic...I am hoping we traded Marshall to gain more FA $'s. If we can get Flynn and Winston in FA that would be a great start to our offseason. Maybe even land a veteran WR?

I have been stating Flynn is our best choice all offseason. If we get Winston to replace Columbo that his HUGE. Then we can get rid of Carey and see Jerry, Murtha and others compete for RG. Our O Line looks pretty solid under that scenario.

Then we can use #1 for a pass rusher, #2 for a WR and two #3's for TE and Safety. Not such a bad draft.

Of course Flynn wants Miami because there he can be in the spotlight. Heck, any QB in the draft would like to go to Miami so they can start no matter how bad they are. Pathetic!

The dolphins are a complete joke. Bufoonery abounds.

Vincent Jackson is Buccaneer

So did we get the Bears 74th pick or 80th this year?

jpao, i think ross was being petty over being spurned by jeff fisher and wanted no part of dealing with him in a trade. i too think packaging marshall and a couple of picks might have been the route to go, but his ego probably got in the way.

LOL!!! No doubt Holster. Any QB that comes here is expected to be the next Dan Marino. Quite honestly, they should aspire to that but I am realistic. That's why I think Moore is perfect for the job. He is good enough. This team was starting to look like something in those last 11 or 12 games. Lost some close ones to playoff teams. What hurt us was the pass rush and secondary giving up too many big plays.

Reggie didn't show up until the last 2 or 3 games of the season. I would trade his butt and draft a RB at 8.
