Dolphins taking two-pronged approach to QB issue

The Dolphins are holding out hope, albeit slim at this point, that they can still land Peyton Manning. But they are not so naive as to do nothing else in case bad news comes.

That is why the club has today reached out to free agent quarterback Matt Flynn to discuss the basic parameters of a contract and seek permission to speak with the player himself. The club had coach Joe Philbin, who has coached Flynn in Green Bay, call his former pupil to express interest in him. The club obviously also talked to Flynn's agent.

And all this while everyone awaits a verdict from Manning.

Earlier today a Dolphins source described this as a "delicate" balance for handling the situation. No lie! The Dolphins don't want to offend Manning by making him believe they've moved on before they're actually told they are out. And they don't want to be so inactive as to lose out on Flynn who is now Plan B behind Manning.

It is obviously helping that Flynn wants to come to Miami. Yes, someone would like to come to Miami. It is also helping that the Flynn camp believes the Dolphins will help set the market for the free agent. And, of course, there's Flynn comfort level with Philbin and his system.

So we are waiting the final result of all this.

If you want me to speculate, I'd say the Dolphins end up with Flynn rather than Manning. Just a guess. Nothing more.

we are offcially the worst franchise in the nfl. cant even watch nfl network because o fall the bashing they are doing on miami. pathetic , thanks ross and ireland

This ridiculousness should have been done last year so we could have gotten Luck. I hope Barkley is just as good a prospect. We have to be considered the favorites right now for the #1 overall pick.

If I were Peyton Manning I would be to embarrassed to say yes to Miami now!

Either Ireland signs Brandon Lloyd or he's an idiot.

BAD move trading BM for 2 three's! You can argue cap money, his attitude, personal issues, whatever...I could care less..we need him in our O period. We haven't had a #1 WR in over a decade...and we get rid of BM! I don't care if we draft Blackmon..BM should be on the other side. Say what you want but hartline is NOT a number 2 WR in the nfl...so now we basically have a slot WR and that's about it...nice job Ireland and Co! You Suck!

I have seen Ross interviewed several times on the CNBC financial news station. He is comfortable, in his element. Any time I've seen him or Ireland interviewed as Dolphins execs they've both came off awkward and uncomfortable. They both chose the wrong profession.

This isn't Ross' profession.....the Dolphins are merely his hobby at the moment. Same as it was for Wayne H.

Reggie Wayne re-signs with the colts. So much for that theory!

Take Flynn. Manning is a great qb who may never play the same again or get seriously injured midseason. We are NOT a Superbowl team yet and trying to get there doesn't start with a 35 year old Qb. Personally I would even argue that building around Matt Moore makes more sense.

I can't believe in 6 hours of talking to Manning the subject never came up that he wouldn't have a #1 WR.

Even if we get #1 overall pick next year. Ireland will trade3 down for 2 3rd rd'ers. This man absolutely loves acorns.

Jeff Ireland is your mother a squirrel?

I think the Dolphins should go after Kyle Orton...The fans wanted him last year didn't they?

YG,
Tell me when GB last had one "superman" WR.
We have to believe that the new coach knows what he wants.
Do not believe Marshall was ever a #1 for fins and definitely not worth $27 plus in cap space over the next 3 years. He wasn't traded because of Manning.
If we get a QB (Flynn), OT (Winston) and Nelson in FA and Floyd in Rd 1 are we better?

Listen I'm a Phin fan from South Carolina, we are the laughing stock of the NFL!!! Ross and Ireland are a Freakin JOKE!! If Dan Marino wants know part of this band of misfits why would any one of substance let alone a big time free agent!! You as fans complained about a big time receiver and it's his fault you never got him a QB!!! Henne Tyler Thigpen, Matt Moore?????? I'm done!!!

#1,

Since it seems we're going after 2013 1st overall pick. Why dont we just go out and sign qb Curtis Painter? He got 1st overall pick for the Colts!

Fire Ireland! Now...I wish we could fire Ross too...I was actually happy earlier today because of FA...but now after this FO decides to get robbed for BM..he made the probowl..at least one second rounder should have been in there like a 2 and a 3 for him...BUT I don't even like that!! I wanted him to stay put and add to the O..not strip it even more.

With this much heat on Ireland I would think he would just announce it right now. If they got Peyton, its kind of dumb not to announce it right now. This same heat is not on John Elway. I can see him not announcing. We'd be fools to think Peyton has not already made up his mind.

Wouldn't surprise me if Elway is shopping Tebow to Miami right now.

If they had Peyton in the bag, they could lure other FA's to Miami. Denver really doesn't have a talent problem. Just at QB.

What's the difference between the Miami Dolphins & Wringley Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus?

NOTHING

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Tampafin,

We got Joe Philbin, not Ted Thompson(GB gm).

Where the F is Home!
We need Home on here now!

WTF are we doing? No WR's No Oline, Turd heads running the team

"Blowing it up".....re-build. I'm just surprised that nobody saw this coming....it seemed pretty obvious when they let the entire coaching staff go.

Yeah dusty, YG, this is headed south fast. Another debacle in the making. Sorry to the hopefuls, I don't have confidence in Ireland or Ross. They should have gotten 2 2nd rounders for BM or at least a 2nd and a 3rd. Yeah if they land Manning it might be worth it, but chances are he'll go elsewhere. And I don't blame him!

Tampa Fin, that's a lot of "if's"...First off the Dolphins don't have that much cap money, so forget that idea. Flynn, Winston and Nelson? Dream on...Floyd, I agree, would be a nice pick...

Tampafin,

Also, How many times has a successful oc made a successful hc? Philbin didnt even call the plays.

Tampa Fin Fan....Amen Brother!

Well, two third rounders for Marshall. Twits. The Bears are laughing all the way to the playoffs with that trade and the rest of the league is looking at what good players the Fins have left so they can offer up some lower round picks for them (a 7th rounder in 2018 for Reggie Bush, Jeffie?).

Ireland is a complete efftard. Add to that this little nugget from PFT:

The receiver market has thinned out quickly. Vincent Jackson, Stevie Johnson, Marques Colston, Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne and Harry Douglas have signed contracts. Some reports suggest Eddie Royal and Robert Meachem have also picked new homes.

And we will be left with Hartline as our #1. Can you say "suck" much? Forget Blackmon. There is no way he lasts to #8 and Jeffie will never trade up to get him. If the WC offense relies on fast receivers; we've got one fast one who isn't very good (can't catch) in Gates and one quick (no, not fast so I don't know if he even counts) one who is probably our best receiver in Bess. If Flynn comes here, I hope there are some acorns that can catch. Marlon Moore? Really? He's our #3? Not to mention we have a lumbering oaf for a TE.

Good Lord we are going to suck worse than last year. And don't forget that our vaunted #6 defense was under Nolan. It will change radically this year: new coach, new system. #6? I doubt it. I can hope but it's really doubtful unless they make some serious moves to fix the FS, CB, DE and LB issues quickly.

It's (not) impossible for words to describe what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means (Ross' ownership). Horror... Horror has a face (Jeff Ireland)... and you must make a friend of horror. Horror and moral terror (Jeff Ireland, again) are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared (I guess they're not my friends because I fear every next move these mental midgets make).

The horror... the horror.

If we get a QB (Flynn), OT (Winston) and Nelson in FA and Floyd in Rd 1 are we better?

Posted by: Tampa Fin Fan for Life | March 13, 2012 at 10:25 PM

Nelson who? Jordy? The GB Stud Wr who signed an extension 2 months ago? LOL Revaluate your stance, there are NO FA WR's left!

Well young, I catch everything WR Brian Hartline is better than Reggie Wayne and his ol'ass

Marshall left denver they sucked. They were so bad they decided to have a RB play Quaterback. Tebow is comming after Peyton goes to Denver. We have the perfect set up for him. No receivers to complain.
Be prepared for blackouts
Teams can't win in free agency but teams can sure lose. Maybe 2013 will be better

Tampa just wait man...you'll quickly forget about cap space garbage and BM's personal issues when you see our horrible O this coming year...

I really want to talk to Home. I am shittting myself!

Ireland is the worst GM in the league - Hands Down! Trade a 28 year old pro bowl receiver for 2 -3rd's, likely late 3rd's too.

Nice work Ireland! OMG we suck.

Winston will look for a BIG contract...And so will Flynn obviously...The longer Manning takes to make up his mind the more $$$$ Flynn is going to get...

franchise is done until ross and ireland are gone. we are run by monkeys

O Kelly just reported the Dolphins are in the hunt for Laurent Robinson.

He is a Cowboy but a good one.

Not sure if he's even a FA or not?

Home! I want your aazzz!

look we can move on now, manning just like everyone else sees how big of a joke we have become

I really want to talk to Home. I am shittting myself!

Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland on trading up in the NFL Draft
by: Mike Berardino
February 2nd, 2012 | 5:45 AM

“It depends on what the other team is looking for,” Ireland said during his recent visit to the Sun Sentinel offices. “It’s all a matter of what that team that holds that spot that you’re trying to get up to is looking for. Right now I don’t know what they’re looking for. You obviously have to take into account the player you’re looking to acquire and how that player affects your football team.

SO IRELAND IS SAYING HIS FIRST CONCERN IS WHAT THE OTHER TEAM WANTS INSTEAD OF WHAT HIS TEAM NEEDS? IS THIS THE REASON WHY WE DIDN'T EVEN TRY FOR RGIII. BECAUSE IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT WE NEEDED...IT HAD EVERYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT THE OTHER TEAM WANTED FIRST. YOU KNOW WHAT, THAT TELLS ME HE NEVER EVEN TRIED TO MOVE UP TO GET RGIII. BECAUSE WHAT THEY WANTED, HE FELT, WAS TOO MUCH. SO HE DIDN'T EVEN TRY.

ITS LIKE GOING TO BUY A CAR WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE A CAR. NOTHING WRONG WITH HAGGLING BUT YOU DON'T BUY A CAR FOR THE SOLE REASON OF TRYING TO GET IT ON THE CHEAP. YOU BUY IT BECAUSE YOU NEED IT AND HAGGLE LATER.

Ireland just dug the grave for himself even deeper trading Brandon Marshall what are they going to do for a number 1 receiver now hartline bess I don't think so Blackmon from okla st may make up for this we shall see

great! another wr who is only good because he has 2 other very good wr's to take the pressure off him! Robinson is a #2, not a #1! We have enough of those!

Who is that moron? I only want to talk to Home, not the troll.
Home what is happening next? Still Peyton?

Apparently the Dolphins are in the hunt for WR Laurent Robinson...

B Lloyd would be awesome

New Vegas line
Miami is 1,000,000 to 1 to get to the Super Bowl in the next 10 years
Or as long as Ross owns the team
Any takers?

sad sad day. plain awful

The only way hartline is better than old Reggie Wayne is if Wayne breaks both of his legs and is in traction at the hospital... You are OUT of your mind man...

Damn I wanted to choke my chicken tonight. Now Im to depressed! LOL

M2M!

Go away you doucher!

Its all a plan to finish with the first overall pick next year and then we can draft......oh wait - we are too dumb for that - Ireland will trade down and acquire some extra 3rd rounders to use on more linemen.

It's one thing to trade Marshall to the Bears b/c he is a locker room killer BUT to not have a deal in place with another WR is just flat-out dumb. Sign Lloyd & keep him away from the Patriots.

Home is a idiot, the sky is falling...they are spraying chemicals on me...the end of the world is here.... Nobody listens to your garbage Home and other alias's...go talk to the chemtrail people that don't exist homie

The Dolphins have the 8th pick, not the 4th. Blackmon will be long gone before Miami is on the clock.

Miami blew a huge hole in their WR corps for two third-round picks... while they are trying to court a 36-year-old QB. The Marshall trade says, "We give up for this year" when the 2012 NFL season was all of an hour old.

Reggie Wayne just resigned with the Colts, so obviously he was not part of the Grand plan to land Peyton. Can't wait to see this genius master plan

Forget Manning...there is no way he comes here..not just because of BM...it's everything, including Ireland and Ross

Hmmm...

Jeff: "Okay, we want to restructure your contract in order to bring in Peyton Manning and finally give you the kind of quarterback you've been asking for."

BM: "That means I'll make less money this year, right?"

Jeff:"Yes, I'm afraid so, but we can extend your contract a few more years. At a discount rate, of course."

BM: "Screw that! Trade me!"

Jeff: "Okay, if that's what you want. I'll see what I can do."

BM: "Yeah...you do that! But, talk to Ross first cause he told me he'd show me the money when it came time!"

Damn I wanted to choke my chicken tonight. Now Im to depressed! LOL

Dopus Maximus, aka home, is doing just that. He is using ficticious people named Bianca & Steve Wilkison to get him off. Sad, but true!

marshall WAS THE KILLER BEHIND HENNE'S FAILURE IN MAIMI ,,,,,HE WANTS TO HAVE THE LAST WORD WHO'S GOING TO GET THE BALL AND PHILPIN DOESN'T LIKE THAT .....

"O Kelly just reported the Dolphins are in the hunt for Laurent Robinson.

He is a Cowboy but a good one.

Not sure if he's even a FA or not?"

He's a FA but he's coming off ONE good season. He's a good player but nothing special & certainly doesn't come close to Marshall. Brandon Lloyd is the best WR left.
