Dolphins taking two-pronged approach to QB issue

The Dolphins are holding out hope, albeit slim at this point, that they can still land Peyton Manning. But they are not so naive as to do nothing else in case bad news comes.

That is why the club has today reached out to free agent quarterback Matt Flynn to discuss the basic parameters of a contract and seek permission to speak with the player himself. The club had coach Joe Philbin, who has coached Flynn in Green Bay, call his former pupil to express interest in him. The club obviously also talked to Flynn's agent.

And all this while everyone awaits a verdict from Manning.

Earlier today a Dolphins source described this as a "delicate" balance for handling the situation. No lie! The Dolphins don't want to offend Manning by making him believe they've moved on before they're actually told they are out. And they don't want to be so inactive as to lose out on Flynn who is now Plan B behind Manning.

It is obviously helping that Flynn wants to come to Miami. Yes, someone would like to come to Miami. It is also helping that the Flynn camp believes the Dolphins will help set the market for the free agent. And, of course, there's Flynn comfort level with Philbin and his system.

So we are waiting the final result of all this.

If you want me to speculate, I'd say the Dolphins end up with Flynn rather than Manning. Just a guess. Nothing more.

Why is there no talk about Miami going after any WRs? What the hell is Ireland doing? You get rid of Marshall then you need to sign a veteran receiver who can come in and replace Marshall! Fire Ireland! No rookie is going to come in and start and have the production that Marshall had, nobody. Ireland is the worst GM in the NFL at drafting players so extra draft picks are essential worth nothing. We got rid of Marshall and get nothing in return. Even if he is suspended for 4 games, having him for 12 games he would produce more yards and TDs than the rest of the team WRs combined all season. Dolphins are the laughing stock of the NFL, there is no competition, we even make Detroit look like champions.

Whats funny about all this stuff on this blog, is everyone here thinks they know what to do. Hell if you guys knew so much about running a football team you wouldn't be on this BLOG. ha ha. Jesus Christ it's only the first day of free agency , so calm down. Question ...would you want to play for a team with Fan's like this? HELL NO! The loudest boo's come from the cheapest seats!

I personally think things are going to be better...just give it some time. There is something different about this Coach. I like what the Dolphins are doing this year. Been a fan all my life, but I'm not about to trash my team.

Marino would not talk to Manning and try and get him to come to Miami for 2 reasons. Ross and Ireland

We are done we had a big WR that command a double team now that is gone SORRY BUSH now everyone will stack the box good luck!!!

i hope we can move up to get blackmon sign flynn at least that will be better than it looks now what the hell are they doing --im ok with getting rid of marshall if you have a plan to replace him im a laurent robinson fan but not as a 1 also how about an effn t.e. that can run and catch

WATCH AND SEE DOLFANS.....PHILBIN AND FLYNN .... THE NEXT SHULA AND MARINO...... I FEEL IT, LOTS OF PASSING YARDS TOUCHDOWNS AND WINNING GAMES, A GREAT DFENCE, MARINO NEVER HAD THAT, A GREAT RUNNING BACK, MARINO NEVER HWAD THAT......SO LET GET A RECEIVER THOUGH...WE NEED THAT :)

Dude we need a vetran receiver, fact, and a good one from the ddraft, and flynn, tight end can wait, we aslo need a r.t. , marshall was a good pick up for DEFENCE, AND I HAVE A FEELING THEY KNOW BRANDON MARSHALL WAS A GOOD MOVE, I HOPE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY R DOING, THEY GOTTA KNOW HARTLINE. AND OR BESS IS NO NUMBER 1, TOGETHER THEY AIN'T A 1...GOOD FAST IN THE SLOT THAT'S IT

I'd be happy with Flynn at this point. Getting Manning would be a great lift and boost but I doubt he's coming here now with a trade of our best WR and Wayne resigned in IND. I could be wrong but I doubt it. The 5 hr meeting vs 2 days by others is another huge and obvious sign in reading the tea leaves.
