« Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting | Main | Smith visit smells like leverage ... let's hope »

Getting Flynn at right price as important as getting him

The question today is apparently not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Matt Flynn. It seems if the team gets a chance to sign the Green Bay free agent backup quarterback, that is exactly what will happen.

No, the question I believe more important is not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Flynn but how they'll try to sign Flynn. It's a completely different issue and definitely as important an issue.

Flynn, according to a reliable source, will be in town sometime late tonight. He'll be here, assuming he doesn't get blown away by the Seattle Seahawks and simply jumps at the opportunity. But once he arrives, then what?

What to do with Flynn?

Do the Dolphins commit to Flynn as their starter or do they commit to him as, ahem, a quarterback who will come to camp and compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. In other words, do the Dolphins commit starting quarterback money or do they commit the kind of money a player who has a chance to start but isn't certain of that typically gets?

If the Dolphins are committing to Flynn as their starter, they may have to spend between $7-$9 million per season. The deal would probably extend past two years and there would be a chunky bag of guaranteed money included.

The lesser commitment is obviously cheaper -- probably $4-$5 million per year with incentive clauses that would hike the deal's worth if Flynn wins the starting job, thus deserving more money. This kind of deal protects the team if he fails.

Me?

Flynn is worth one but definitely not the other. He is a value if signing a deal that protects the team in case he's more A.J. Feeley than Drew Brees. He still gets paid if he becomes a star. But he has to earn his money rather than getting it the minute he walks in the locker room.

Makes sense, right?

The problem is Flynn wants to maximize his earning. He will want the biggest deal he can get, certainly his agent will want that. And because he's got two quarterback-hungry teams talking to him, he might be able to leverage one versus the other to get what he wants.

(Personally, I don't see the Seahawks letting themselves be held up. They paid Travaris Jackson a two-year deal worth $8 million last season. I assume if they offer Flynn, it'll be a similar deal and ask him to fight for the starting job. I say this because you must remember Flynn was not Seattle's top QB choice this offseason. They actually scheduled Chad Henne to come to town before Flynn. Henne never made it because he signed with Jacksonville.)

Well, the Dolphins can similarly make the case that Flynn is not their top choice. At least I hope they make that case. Everyone knows they wanted Peyton Manning. And I assume they aren't going to use the money on Flynn that they would have used on Manning.

At least I hope not because that's just dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is for the Dolphins to hold their desperation in check. Getting Flynn simply isn't like getting Manning. We don't even know if he's any good.

With Flynn it's not just about getting him to come. As a relatively unproven player, he has to come at the right price -- for the team.

Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Matt Hassleback, and so on. You're right,,,,madness. I thought we were trying to upgrade not stay the course. I would like one Tebow fan to explain how this kid is going to run a west coast offense that relies on accurate throws when he is the least accurate passer in the league. Also I would like to know how he is going to run through our new zone blocking scheme. It's not built for scrambling qbs. Tebow is a mistake in Miami.

Alex Smith seems to have the same qualities as Matt Moore so lateral move there.

Hasslebeck won't do anything for us. Get us to the playoffs, one and done, MAYBE.

Captain Crunch, What flavor cereal will you come out with this year? How about flavor Fukk You. I like that flavor.

DC
Im slowing climbing on the wagon. And it is a big NO to Cousins and Foles. As for Tannehill, Im about as sure about him as Flynn. And thats not saying much. But do you feel we should draft Weeden as a 1st or wait? I know you posted that same question the other day. just wondering if you came to any conclusion.

Weeden could be a good option. I wouldn't be mad if Jeffy took him in the second.

Usually, a guy goes in the 2nd because he's NOT a franchise talent QB. At least with Weeden, it's his age, not his talent.

Drew Brees went in the 2nd because he didn't have prototype height. He turned out OK.

I'm down with that. And depending on how Weeden performed in pre-season I would keep Moore on a tight leash. Later guys.

Wow....good to see people coming around on their thinking.....a consensus even.....wow!

DC, I don't know the two WRs you mentioned. I haven't really done much homework outside of the first round. I'd still want to be chasing Blackmon or Floys but it's partly because those are the guys I know. Not sure about the others.

If he was worth anything he'd already have an offer. From what in saw e s a system QB that has zero physical traits that stand out. He is accurate but every time he tries to throw 20+ yards It looks like it's going to be picked off . He has no arm no velocity on ball. Waste of Money resign Bell n keep Moore then draft a QB

Clue, your retorts are retarded. You seem as sharp as a beach ball. Find someone else to talk down to you.

What if Alex Smith becomes available?

LOL @ Clue

I still can't believe people are still crying over Henne, he is backup at best, he is not a good QB, let him be and wish him the best in Jack.

Sign Flynn cheap, if not draft Tannenhill and start Moore next season, no much more options now.

Captain Kirk, Beem me up Scottie!!!!

"I know it's old news... but it won't surprise me to find out a year from now that Henne was the best FA QB for us.. and Sporano was the best HC for us. Of course, they'll both prove that with OTHER teams... as is the Fin's Way!"

Hey Mike,

How quickly we forget the 0-7 to start to this season. Not saying Ireland is to blame but you can't give Sparano & Henne a pass. They both failed to win games.

Troll Couch,

Getting Peyton would make SF the only COMPLETE team in the NFL, any important team metric, Peyton helps them be elite in every category. Pass yards, turnover ratio, total offense, defense, it would be the best team he ever played on ... by legions.

Sorry....I meant to say that Ireland is NOT to blame too.

Are the same people complaining about the "low ball" offer to Flynn the same people that were convinced we or someone else was going throw a long term $20M guaranteed, $65M contract at the guy?

all this blog has become is an orgy for leasbians phins78 & craig m to compliment each other. what are you lovers? exchange emails or skype each other so the blog can regain some kind of dignity!

Guys-
One point, Denver gets flynn if Manning goes to SF.

When Flynn flops I hope you'll admit how insanely stupid that move is

Mark, that all depends on if Manning plays or stands on the sideline holding a clipboard. as the most over paid QB coach in history..

I've been telling you guys Matt Moore is a good QB...Now either Ross wants Tebow knowing Manning is going to Denver or Sherman convinced everyone that Tannehill has what it takes to become a franchise QB...You would think if Philbin thought very highly of Flynn they would of signed him by now...Not convinced Flynn would be such an upgrade over Moore...

Hahaha, flavour Fukk You!!!

I have a stronger arm than Flynn

Weeden could be a good option. I wouldn't be mad if Jeffy took him in the second.

"Usually, a guy goes in the 2nd because he's NOT a franchise talent QB. At least with Weeden, it's his age, not his talent.

Drew Brees went in the 2nd because he didn't have prototype height. He turned out OK."

And Dalton went in the 2nd round last year & regardless of Cam Newton--who might have had better stats--played better IMO than any of the QB's that were drafted.

The longer this "QB search" goes the more depressing it gets. Not that I think Matt Flynn is a sure thing but I have a feeling that Flynn's visit to Miami is nothing more than a courtesy to show respect for Joe philbin wich he obviously has a close relation with. I think Flynn will sign in Seattle. So OUR Miami Dolphins will very likely have to pick a QB in the drafft

Clue, you strike me as a sci-fi nerd.

Why are you so bent with me? Cause I insinuated you're a sucker fan? It is what it is bro. I said it. Deal with it & move on.

Stop following me like a puppy who just lost his owner. Not very flattering being a Troll.

FFE, knowing all that's going on with this guy, he's going to play.

"Raiders released OLB Kamerion Wimbley.
Wimbley was one of the league's top pass rushers last season, but the Raiders simply couldn't afford his $11 million 2012 salary. That's despite the fact that $6.5 million of it was fully guaranteed. Wimbley is now easily the market's top available defender, and should draw another huge contract after signing for five years and $48 million with the Raiders last August."

Someone with cap space is going to get a REALLY good player. I just hope it's not the Patriots but that's not really there modus operandi. In fact I can't remember the last time the Patriots really broke the bank in FA.

Manning really did us a HUGE favor by saying no to us. We would have had to cater an offense aroung him that we would only use while peyton was still a Dolphin. Tehn couldnt fully initiate Philbin's offense until he was gone.

Lets face it, chance of winning a sb even with Manning were extremely slim. The 2 teams that are probably his finalist(49ers, Bronco) are far more sb ready with Manning at the controls.

Its like we're still hanging the dry wall in our house. While both the 49ers and Broncos are planning the "Open House". We're not "open House" ready Peyton or not. Thanks for saying no Mr. Manning.

At least Arizona isn't getting Manning. That would have been like being stabbed in the back and kicked in the knuts at the same time.

YG, how are the Broncos much better than us? They stink too.

Why get Flynn? Moore is better.

We Have draft Picks,

The Pats dont have to break the bank for anybody. Just like a spin off of your screen name: "The Pats Have Draft Picks" and lots of them! LOL

Mark,

Broncos made the playoffs FYI

ALL YOU PEOPLE CONDEMING IRELAND ARE IDIOTS , WHEN HE STARTED ON HIS OWN HES DONE A GOOD JOB, AND THOSE CONDEMMING THE TEAM THIS YEAR IN MARCH ARE COMPLETE MORONS. NOBODY CAN PREDICT THE FUTURE YOU SDA LITTLE PEOPLE. IM A FIN FAN AND PROUD OF IT, AND I WATCH PRESEASON AND RATE PLAYERSTHEN ILL CHEER THE TEAM IN SEPT. WITH HOPE FOR THE SEASON THATS ALL A REAL FAN CAN DO PERIOD.
GO FINS

Heck, the Broncos won a playoff game. When was the last time the Dullfins won a playoff game? 10 years ago?

If Alex Smith becomes a free agent- or is - are the fins aware of this? and ????

Has the NFL ever seen a worse GM then Irescum?

Mark In Toronto,

If you can make the 2nd rd of the playoffs with Tim Tebow as your qb. Then you cant be too bad.

Guaranteed we wouldnt have made the playoffs with Tebow as our starting qb last year. Instead of 6-10 we wouldve probably been staring down at 2-14 this year.

But on the bright side, we would at least be staring at getting RG3 right now! LOL

We Have Draft Picks,

I could TOTALLY see the Pats getting this guy. It's the Pats still to sit back in the weeds while teams like the Bills throw big money at guys like Williams. The Pats have a bit need for pass rush and Wimbley fits the bill. If they can get it done without breaking the bank they will.

If Manning plays, he's a short timer unless he goes on the extended Brett-Favre-Money-Grab-Retirement-Fund-Tour perhaps taking a team to the playoffs, in self-embarassing style, but not the Super Bowl.
Both were amongst the best but Manning's neck should tell him it's time to retire . . .

If the Niners sign Manning it will be interesting to see what happens to Smith. I don't see him as a fit here but would he work in Cleveland, Arizona or Seattle? Maybe he stays in SF, as insurance for Manning. Would he even do that? I don't know.

..Just want to know if throwing the ball from your own 34 yard line(this isn't the line of scrimmage, but where that ball was released) all the way down to the opponents 18 yard line in stride with the reciever a weak arm?? That is almost 50 yards in the air on target..We haven't had a quarterback that can do this in years..Flynn isn't going to throw laser ropes on 20 yard out patterns. We had a guy that could do that the last two years..The issue..The ball was innacurate. BTW you can rewind the Packer Lion game to see this pass..

Knowing how to place the ball, touch-accuracy trumps arm strength every day..No use having a Donkey Dong if you can't last more then a minute..Same with a strong am, no touch..useless.

HoHoHo!, Kris and others, Fukk you.

Captain Turdhead, I troll no one, Frankley, I dont give a crap what you posts, I'm not the senstive type. I tell you what, this is what Im going to do.

Mark, the Broncos are drafting AFTER the Dolphins. Duuuuh!

Scotty, and making the playoffs at 8-8 in a tremendously weak division means they are super bowl ready? Spare me ... they stink.

It would be more interesting to see Oliver Luck pull a "Archie Manning" and Luck refuses to play for Indy. Indy has already dumped Peyton and boy oh boy would that be interesting! LOL

HoHoHo!, Kris and others, Fukk you.

.
oscar you'd love to Fukk me.

Alex Smith is a way better option than Flynn. But I'd still think Moore beats him out. Why is there no talk of Matt Moore? He was ranked close to the top ten QBs last year showed poise and arm strength. He will only get better if you give him the job outright before the season get him as many reps as possible in the new Offense. I even think Kolb would be a better option.

Reading Bears comments on acquiring Marshall, it seems as if they dont realize he drops a lot of balls. There in for a rude awakening.

"Why get Flynn? Moore is better."

Scotty,

That's probably what Ireland thinks b/c he doesn't know any better. This is the guy who wasted 2nd round picks on Henne & Pat White who is out of the league. Yes, he did sign Moore so he deserves a break but I think I'll take Philbin's word for it since he's seen the kid in GB for the last 4 years. If Philbin didn't think he could be the guy then there's NO WAY that the Dolphins would have set up a meeting for later today.

In the end IF we don't get Flynn it will be b/c Ross & Ireland are incompetent losers.

How the hell can we afford Wimbley? We've got like 4 million left in cap space...

Memo to Jeff Ireland and Steven Ross,

The way the Niners have conducted their business with relation to Manning is HOW you should be doing your business. In this era of 24/7 media and Twitter and everything else there wasn't a single word out there about ANY of this stuff until just now. NOTHING! To me that's truly remarkable and is probably making Manning feel pretty good about the whole process. You get a bozo like the owner Adams advertising to the media that he offered Manning a 'lifetime contract' and how you guys have been running the show, and it's not surprising the results on the field.

LEARN how to run your business and improve...

I will now proceed to season my very nice NY strip steak which I will consume this evening. You don't think that kind of steak should be seasoned? Of course not, only to make it softer and more flavorful. We are not Neanderthals here, you know(I am guessing).

Mark, no one said anything about the Broncos being SB ready. But if the Broncos stink the Dolphins are dog diarrhea.

DUHHHH!!!

The Broncos were 31st in pass offense and this sin't just due to Tebow. They have one good receiver who's very inexperienced and hasn't put it all together yet.

Good defense? Ours is better in every statistical category.20th overall ... pff

BRONCOS SUKK THE DIKK and were the beneficiaries of some extreme luck. And they played a very wounded Big ben in the playoffs.

Once they played a real team like the pats they were completely obliterated. Lions did the same thing to them too. They stink...

MARK IN TORONTO,

The Broncos were 8-8 mainly because of Tebow not being a complete qb. Many of the games Tebow won may not have been miraculous come from behind wins if they had a better qb.

Tebow had to com from behind to win many games had the Broncos had a better qb they would not have had to come from behind in the first place. There was much adieu about Tebow over nothing by the media.

Mark, winning a playoff game stinks? You are an idiot.
