« Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting | Main | Smith visit smells like leverage ... let's hope »

Getting Flynn at right price as important as getting him

The question today is apparently not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Matt Flynn. It seems if the team gets a chance to sign the Green Bay free agent backup quarterback, that is exactly what will happen.

No, the question I believe more important is not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Flynn but how they'll try to sign Flynn. It's a completely different issue and definitely as important an issue.

Flynn, according to a reliable source, will be in town sometime late tonight. He'll be here, assuming he doesn't get blown away by the Seattle Seahawks and simply jumps at the opportunity. But once he arrives, then what?

What to do with Flynn?

Do the Dolphins commit to Flynn as their starter or do they commit to him as, ahem, a quarterback who will come to camp and compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. In other words, do the Dolphins commit starting quarterback money or do they commit the kind of money a player who has a chance to start but isn't certain of that typically gets?

If the Dolphins are committing to Flynn as their starter, they may have to spend between $7-$9 million per season. The deal would probably extend past two years and there would be a chunky bag of guaranteed money included.

The lesser commitment is obviously cheaper -- probably $4-$5 million per year with incentive clauses that would hike the deal's worth if Flynn wins the starting job, thus deserving more money. This kind of deal protects the team if he fails.

Me?

Flynn is worth one but definitely not the other. He is a value if signing a deal that protects the team in case he's more A.J. Feeley than Drew Brees. He still gets paid if he becomes a star. But he has to earn his money rather than getting it the minute he walks in the locker room.

Makes sense, right?

The problem is Flynn wants to maximize his earning. He will want the biggest deal he can get, certainly his agent will want that. And because he's got two quarterback-hungry teams talking to him, he might be able to leverage one versus the other to get what he wants.

(Personally, I don't see the Seahawks letting themselves be held up. They paid Travaris Jackson a two-year deal worth $8 million last season. I assume if they offer Flynn, it'll be a similar deal and ask him to fight for the starting job. I say this because you must remember Flynn was not Seattle's top QB choice this offseason. They actually scheduled Chad Henne to come to town before Flynn. Henne never made it because he signed with Jacksonville.)

Well, the Dolphins can similarly make the case that Flynn is not their top choice. At least I hope they make that case. Everyone knows they wanted Peyton Manning. And I assume they aren't going to use the money on Flynn that they would have used on Manning.

At least I hope not because that's just dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is for the Dolphins to hold their desperation in check. Getting Flynn simply isn't like getting Manning. We don't even know if he's any good.

With Flynn it's not just about getting him to come. As a relatively unproven player, he has to come at the right price -- for the team.

Clyde..I hear you loud and clear..I'm not debating you on those points..You are right. You just said our owner didn't meet with Manning. I'm just correcting you on that single point..Ross did meet with Manning on his own without Ireland, or Philbin..This was reported by Darlington on NFL access tonight. It comes on soon, I'm sure it is a replay. He gives all the details...Listen, I'm with you here. I'm not arguing any of the other points. It really doesn't matter anyway. My frustration is that the club seemed to be the only few people on the planet..and Home. Who believed that Manning may come here..Especially when it was becoming clearer each day that Manning was going elsewhere...It was like the team was lost in some pcp dream..

I hear you DD. On that point about Ross then I was mistaken. I was countering someone else before you who suggested Peyton was Miami's to lose, and it sure looks like Peyton never had any sincere interest in the fins.

DD,

If Home's posts are influencing you in anyway, you may have some very serious issues. Really. You can't possibly believe he has any inside knowledge on anything. If you make 19 predictions some will come true and you can gloat, but Peyton shut the door, and that Home guy is predictably nowhere in sight, hoping we'll forget how wrong he was.

The secret to starting this year will be running the football well and playing at worst top 10 D to keep us in games while the system comes to life, I want to see Edmund Gates coached up and that speed put to good use, if any of you remember Henne over threw him on several deep balls where he blew past defenders in stride. Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace always seemed to contribute the few times they were on the field never understood why they didnt get a greater opportunity to prove they could play a larger role. Here is where Phillbin must prove his worth by getting maximum effort from the talent he has, something Tony never could do.

In order to flourish in the GB offense you need quick WR`s that run crisp routes creating space fitting the ball into those sometimes very tight windows, Phillbins offense runs allot of short to medium horizontal patterns and is very effective when he opens up the 4-5 wide package, that is why he does not need a true alpha receiver its an equal opportunity offense that creates confusion because you never know where the ball is going exactly, 5 guys could have 30-40 plus catches and be a top 5 offensive unit in the NFL at the same time in this system. I think that works into the strengths of D. Bess and Hartline, expect Fasano, Clay and Bush to have a bigger roles in the passing game he likes to line up his tight ends/backs wide and match em up against linebackers I foresee Clay having a good sophomore season. Pass protection will be the determining factor for this offense to show its full potential.

DD,

Just like I made in a post a couple days ago. You have to hit opn draft picks. You cant use the draft the way Ireland's used it. Guys like Misi for example or a 1st rd'er like Odrick.

Especially 1st rd guys like Odrick, you're better off drafting BPA in that case. Odrick served no pressing need. He served a what if in case Soliai didnt work out. You just cant do that with a 1st rd pick. Your 1st rd pick cant be based on a "what if" situation, that's what lower picks are for.

Man I can go on and on. Im sure you could think of quite a few yourself. It should be a criminal offense for the way the fo has been running this franchise the last 4, now 5yrs.

Nearly cap strap, Long has yet to finish his rookie contract(2013), draft busts, fa busts, fa cuts, and only one failed playoff appearance to show for it all. Worse yet, after all of this, at best we're a coin flip as whether we can be even a wildcard playoff team this year.

Then some idiots here say Irelands doing a great job and are still under the "wait til next year dellusions".

Clyde,

I said Peyton was Miami's to lose simply because at least within the first 24hrs Indy let him go he was.

This fo made several "HUGE" mistakes. The first was letting Peyton leave before they made thier pitch. Once Peyton met with John Elway, Miami slipped to #2 on his list. Once he met with his buddy Ken Wisenhunt, Miami had slipped to #3 on Peyton's list.

The Dolphins first huge mistake was allowing Peyton to leave. They should have locked him down in a Miami brothel if they had to. Whatever they had to do to keep Manning from leaving Miami they should have done it.

I'll bet Don Shula would never have allowed Peyton to leave had he arrived in Miami 1st. Even if he had to sign all of Steak Houses over to Manning. Manning was Miami's to lose and this fo began losing In lees than 48hrs when they let him leave town.

Anyone see that kameron wimbly is being released by oakland? Think he could be an ireland acorn and take attention away from wake?

Ireland's Acorns.... Sounds like a bowling team name. Or little league...

Our WR core is very suspect. We betther get Blackmon, the WR from Georgia tech or the 2 from Arkansaw St. We can trade our 1, plus the 2 3's from Marshall to move up to get Blackmon.

Well, those thinking Miami will take Tannehill at #8 can give it a rest. They cant take Tannehill and sign Matt Flynn. Flynn probably comes at around $5-$6 million a year.

Cam Newton got a 4yr $22 million contract. Or about $5.8 Million a year. So at #8, one year later, Tannehill would get at least $5 million a year. Matt Moore will make at least $3 million. Thats right at $14 million dollars Miami would have invested in the qb position in 2012 alone and still wont have a bonafide franchise qb on the roster.

Thats not good folks!

Blackmon's gonna cost at least $4 million a year copming out of the chute. But still not as high as what we wouldve been paying Marshall. Blackmon would be a good pick. But it might make far too much sense to do for this fo to contemplate pulling the trigger.

We've signed two defensive ends in fa. Signed Artis Hicks. So maybe, just maybe Blackmon might be our draft day surprise.

But with Ireland behind the wheels I wont hold my breath.

Excellent analysis Ish Palomino, which brings me to Fasano. Considering his contract he is a very underwhelming TE, why they haven't made a move to unload him is baffling. Greg Olsen sharing the load with Jeremy Shockey put far better numbers, and has a smaller cap hit than Fasano's although long term the avg is similar, still Olsen is way better than Fasano and the way his contract is structured it helps his team today.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3604/anthony-fasano

I mean $4.375 million against the cap for Fasano? RUFKme? No wonder this team has such a crappy cap situation.

What is Ireland waiting for to unload him? He's not even a good fit for Philbin's WCO? Again, lack of vision.

2011 dropped pass leaders.

1 Roddy White Atl 15
2t Dwayne Bowe KC 12
2t Greg Little Cle 12
2t Brandon Marshall Mia 12

I guess Roddy is crap also huh?

The QB game is a guessing game. We have nothing to lose...everyone has to take the risk at QB. At least we have Philbin's knowledge of Flynn.

IF Philbin is behind Flynn....I'm "all in"

I'd rather guess with a 1st rounder than a 7th rounder.

Oh yeah, Marshall had to play against Revis Island twice a year.

2010 Mia 14 2 3 1.5 0 86 1014 11.8 3
2011 Mia 16 1 13 13.0 0 81 1214 15.0 6

Marshall went from 11.8 yards a game under Henne to 15 yards a game under Moore. Doubled his TD's from Henne to Moore. Better QB equals better results.

11.8 yards a catch to 15 yards a catch.

Does that mean Bowe is crap also. He was tied with drops with Marshall.

"blah blah blah blah blah....I'm just correcting you on that single point..Ross did meet with Manning on his own without Ireland, or Philbin.."

If my boss met with my clients behind my back I would quit. Ross was probably telling Peyton Ireland sucks and he is going to fire him pretty soon. And Peyton was like...wow...I can't work for backstabbing pricks.

You can't possibly be stupid enough to actually think that.

Then again, considering the content of this blog on a daily basis I suppose anything is possible.

But just me make sure I have your premise correct.

According to you, the likely scenario is that Ross met privately with Manning to try and get him to play for the Dolphins while concurrently telling him the GM "sucks." Is that it?

Yeah, that's really logical. I'll bet you also believe in 9/11 conspiracies, Virgin Births, and scantily-clad genies living with astronauts in Cocoa Beach.

Jack, presumably you have a brain.

Use it.

Wow....can you believe how much bad energy we put into all this over-blown hype just for a sport????
And go figure...the sports channels are reeaalllly scrambling now, just because there's less to talk about, less to speculate about...LESS FRIGGIN MANNING CRAP to hear all the time
If the sports channels acted this way back in 1984
MARINO WOULD BE GOD
manning is just a man...not a hero ...he's ignorant to think he play the way he used to and he's been flaunted and thrown in our faces for weeks...MIAMI, just get it done...MATT FLYNN and BROCK OSWEILER...oh, and by the way, MATT MOORE could be another MARINO if you'd just give him a blasted chance

I hope Ireland can land some of these FA available! We just don't know what these guys are looking for!

dave you must not have been here much. jack sparrow is very stupid.

very, very stupid.

Hey, if we don't get Flynn, Billy Volek is available! Let the "bag it for Barkley 2012" campaign begin!

Jack Sparrow, the world's stupidest teenager.

Too bad Trump is fixing up Doral....next time he plays golf with our moron owner at his own club, the Donald should make an offer to buy the Dolphins that he couldn't refuse! You know that Trump's ego would be our biggest asset, he can't tolerate losing, has the money to get anything done and would put in the best people to give him what he wants-winning! You don't perform, you're out....besides, he could build us a new stadium on the cheap! Seriously, he's got the ego and the money. What is our moron owner doing? Trump would fire Ireland just as the ink dried on the Purchase Agreement! He would get rid of these partial celeb owners, he doesn't need their money or fame....he HAS that already!

Why do they even want Flynn? He's a lifetime backup.

Any other owner would've fired Ireland a long time ago...at the Dez Bryant debacle. Ross should've cleaned house from the Parcells stench.

I dont know if I would go as far as to say Moore would be the next Marino. But, I do feel he has earned the chance, and I would like to see exactly what he can do with a full season, and some weapons. Not sure we are going to get that chance. And im also a little leary of the whole Flynn deal. Are we even sure its Philbin that wants him? Or is this another Ross wish? If, this is truly Philbins hand picked choice, then I can see where he has the inside track. But, then again I do not think he is worth starting at 6mil a year. That puts Moore on the bench. No competition, nothing. Im willing to stick with Moore, draft Weeden in the second. If niether pans out, there are QB's coming out in next years draft. In the meantime find some weapons, shore up The "O".

YG has to be the worst poster here. Yes, he knows a lot of Football, he just doesn't know how to put it together.

Why am I starting to get that old creeping feeling that Ross is meddling in Football matters, again?

If you think for 1 second that Bill"I want no troublemakers here" Parcells had anything to do with us acquiring Brandon Marshall, then you should come and see me sometime. It was Ross/Ireland all the way.

I know you guys will not agree with this but I am not sure that Flynn is not just another Feeley. I don't think he is better than Moore. I liked the way Moore progressed last year. We got rid of a diva wr in marshall who had psycho issues. We can get a qb in the draft (Flynn was a 7th rounder by the way). Heck we could go after Wallace if we wanted to stretch the field. There are a lot of good free agents out there as well. Just sayin'.

Only in YG's mind there exists the possibility that it was Parcell's idea to acquire that wimpy fukk of a QB named Pat White.

I am beginning to get mad as all Hell...

The surest sign of incompetence is when you face the moment a little too early, or too late.

We are acutely aware of all these brilliant cynical pens around here. Still, there are Signs that cannot be obviated for whatever reasons.

Well, you go on now, I have to go some other place.

Armando you and others here make it seem as though the Dolphins have lots of options left. Matt Moore is not elite. Flynn may not be either but atleast there is hope with some familiarallity with the coach, playbook and the unknown potential that he could be something special. Right now the Dolphins need hope. If they need to pay a little bit to get that than they better do it! Even if the Dolphins could pull of drafting Tannehill he could only offer us the same hope that Flynn would bring. More or less depending on your evaluation of QB's.

The Dolphins are obviously doomed until Ireland and Ross are gone. The team gets worse every friggin year with those clowns. There is no talent and no cap space. And no one competent enough to stop the destruction.

"Free agent Matt Flynn will officially meet with the Dolphins on Saturday.
Flynn left Seattle without a contract, giving Miami a chance to get its man after it swung and missed on Peyton Manning. It would be a tremendous disappointment for a beleaguered franchise if Flynn leaves South Beach without a contract."

You know...I've trashed the ownership of this team going back to Huzienga & I'm hardly a fan of Ireland BUT he probably produced our best draft in a decade, he did sign Moore last year instead of chasing Orton, & I actually like what we've done in FA so far.

Does he need to land Flynn at this point since Philbin wants him??? I say yes.

This fo made several "HUGE" mistakes. The first was letting Peyton leave before they made thier pitch.

YG, the problem with this comment is that the Miami Dolphins are not a branch of the police or military. They could not detain Manning and force him to interview. Miami made it's intentions known long before Peyton was released. Just common sense tells you if Peyton ever had Miami on his radar he would have interviewed while he was in their backyard before going off to Denver. He never did come to Miami to interview, our FO had to chase him down in Indy, yet he still made two more trips to Tennesee and SF. So of his own volition he visited four teams on their home ground, yet blew off visiting Miami when he was right in our backyard.

If actions speak louder than words, Peyton himself never had Miami on his radar. Many were just victims of the media hype that said Miami was high on his list. Now we know Peyton was not thinking about his wife or his condo or the weather, but winning a SB, and Miami never passed the sniff test.

Philbin and Flynn are both C- level acquisitions. No one else was interested in Philbin and one other team interested in Flynn. This is a far cry from Fisher and Manning.

A few things...

I'm glad we 'lost' in the Manning sweepstakes.
The reasons should be obvious. In summation, his signing would have undermined the Philbin hiring.

I agreed with BM's release and the reasons had nothing to do with his off-field behavior. See the 2nd paragraph of Ish Palomino's post @ 2:20 AM.

If the fins sign Flynn, then I will believe Philbin got his man.

WOW is this team pathetic. I think Long wont last the season and then there is not one star on the entire team. The NFL has never seen a team so void of talent. Good luck selling seats Ross.

Makes no sense for Ross to meet with Manning behind Ireland and Philbin backs unless he was backstabbing them. They couldn't go together and make the pitch? I wonder which fool blew the deal. Ireland, Philbin or Ross. Because Manning called them and told them to look elsewhere for a QB.

I bet he said, "I wanted to talk with you without Jeff. Please please please Peyton, come to my hobby I call a NFL football team."

I wonder if Ross tried to low ball Peyton behind Irelands back?

TOP OF THE MORNING TO YA.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT endorsing any QB with this post.

How is it that there are fans or fake fans on here judging how Flynn is going to play? I mean for Philbins sake people we really have no idea except that he can run and throw and accurately connect with deep bombs for TD's. He had two games and we see what he did. If you didn't, there are plenty of places on the net to watch those games and see for yourself.

With that... we need to examine those two games and say, looks great or we can sit here and say, that kid sucks and cant play or it was a fluke, etc, etc, etc.

In the end Philbin knows exactly what Flynn is capable of and if you think that a freshmen HC like Philbin is going to pick Flynn to FAIL, you need to reevaluate your own self.

Philbin will give Flynn the thumbs up or thumbs down. Apparently he has given the up signal as they are with Flynn as we speak.

Again, I am NOT endorsing any QB just pointing out what it is.

Now, I have been endorsing WR Justin Blackmon for over 5 months now. The Dolphins need to move up and take Blackmon as he is a play maker. Best WR to come out in a very long time. If you don't like Blackmon that's OK but we cannot deny that he IS THAT GOOD which BTW is exactly why he will go very fast in the first 5 spots.

This team has no play makers and we need to give whoever the QB is going to be a target. He will be doubled which opens up the rest of the O. Even with a average QB Blackmon is going to make those catches.

In the end... is it the QB that makes the WR look good or is it the WR that makes the QB and entire team look good.

Your choice.

Happy Saint patrick's Day.

Who is going to pay $ to watch this high school team?

I guess Dwayne Bowe is crappy since he had just as many drops as Marshall. Here is a thought dummies. Doesn't it make sense to have more drops because the ball comes your way more times? Its not like Marshall had any help catching the ball. Unlike all the other real NFL teams out there.

But hey, give Marshall away for a bag a chips and a moon pie.

Nice FO we got going. Very nice indeed.

Zonk, without Manning, Ross needs to lower ticket prices or faces an empty stadium for most of the games.

PS...just ask Tony does Ross sneak around behind people's back. Sparano didn't even know they were shopping for a new head coach until he heard it on ESPN.

Here is todays ESPN Scouts Inc slots.

NYG,

Flynn was not anywhere close to being the hot FA qb on the market after Peyton. Miami, the team that knows him best is reportedly making a very low offer. It is quite obvious none of the other 31 teams see him as a franchise QB. Both the Jags and Jets signed QB's without even interviewing Flynn. QB's seen with franchise potential get far more attention than Flynn.

I don't buy the 'he knows Philbins offense' line. For one, Moore can learn it too, I don't think it takes 4 years. Secondly, by Philbins own words, you can't just drop the GB offense in here, you have to tailor the offense to your players.

I just don't see Flynn as an upgrade over Moore. Find a guy in the draft or wait and see if an interesting FA comes available once Peyton is signed.

Maybe idiot Ross will honor Mark Sanchez to sell some tickets like he did with Tim Tebow last year.

Clyde,

How about this scenario. IF Peyton signed with the 49ers. Alex Smith becomes available...

NYG, Philbin has said he does not want an 'alpha' WR in his offensive scheme...hence the Marshall trade.

No way he moves UP to get Blackmon...it's just not going to happen so don't get too excited about that prospect.

IMO, the team drafts the best available DE on the board @ #8 and addresses the WR position later in the draft.

Ross is not dumb enough to go after Tebow if Denver wins the Manning sweepstakes...right?

Think about this. They low balling Flynn right? So how the heck were they gonna pay Peyton? Just the guaranteed money to get Peyton is probably enough to sign Flynn to a 3 year deal. Peyton worth 4 or 5 times as much as Flynn. I wonder if they offered Peyton, Flynn type money?

So why low ball Flynn when they supposedly had the money to get Peyton? Unless of course, like always, they weren't really trying to get Peyton.

If Flynn is the man then why low ball him? Just outbid Seattle since they were willing to pay for Peyton anyways.
