« Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting | Main | Smith visit smells like leverage ... let's hope »

Getting Flynn at right price as important as getting him

The question today is apparently not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Matt Flynn. It seems if the team gets a chance to sign the Green Bay free agent backup quarterback, that is exactly what will happen.

No, the question I believe more important is not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Flynn but how they'll try to sign Flynn. It's a completely different issue and definitely as important an issue.

Flynn, according to a reliable source, will be in town sometime late tonight. He'll be here, assuming he doesn't get blown away by the Seattle Seahawks and simply jumps at the opportunity. But once he arrives, then what?

What to do with Flynn?

Do the Dolphins commit to Flynn as their starter or do they commit to him as, ahem, a quarterback who will come to camp and compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. In other words, do the Dolphins commit starting quarterback money or do they commit the kind of money a player who has a chance to start but isn't certain of that typically gets?

If the Dolphins are committing to Flynn as their starter, they may have to spend between $7-$9 million per season. The deal would probably extend past two years and there would be a chunky bag of guaranteed money included.

The lesser commitment is obviously cheaper -- probably $4-$5 million per year with incentive clauses that would hike the deal's worth if Flynn wins the starting job, thus deserving more money. This kind of deal protects the team if he fails.

Me?

Flynn is worth one but definitely not the other. He is a value if signing a deal that protects the team in case he's more A.J. Feeley than Drew Brees. He still gets paid if he becomes a star. But he has to earn his money rather than getting it the minute he walks in the locker room.

Makes sense, right?

The problem is Flynn wants to maximize his earning. He will want the biggest deal he can get, certainly his agent will want that. And because he's got two quarterback-hungry teams talking to him, he might be able to leverage one versus the other to get what he wants.

(Personally, I don't see the Seahawks letting themselves be held up. They paid Travaris Jackson a two-year deal worth $8 million last season. I assume if they offer Flynn, it'll be a similar deal and ask him to fight for the starting job. I say this because you must remember Flynn was not Seattle's top QB choice this offseason. They actually scheduled Chad Henne to come to town before Flynn. Henne never made it because he signed with Jacksonville.)

Well, the Dolphins can similarly make the case that Flynn is not their top choice. At least I hope they make that case. Everyone knows they wanted Peyton Manning. And I assume they aren't going to use the money on Flynn that they would have used on Manning.

At least I hope not because that's just dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is for the Dolphins to hold their desperation in check. Getting Flynn simply isn't like getting Manning. We don't even know if he's any good.

With Flynn it's not just about getting him to come. As a relatively unproven player, he has to come at the right price -- for the team.

NHFINSFAN,

The only thing is that I have no fate in THE SCOUT doing anything good. We NEED a DE but I have a feeling that he will trade the #8 for VALUE picks later. Hope not.

NY "G"...

What happened to that MANNING GUARANTEE......

I guess it in the same place as the COWHER GUARANTEE......

"G".......next time you feel like GUARANTEEING something.....don't......

NHFINSFAN,

Also you mentioned >>> Philbin has said he does not want an 'alpha' WR in his offensive scheme...hence the Marshall trade. <<<

Did he really say that??? I must have missed that.

Kris,

And a Happy St Patty's Day to you Kris.

:-)

for you "G"....

Ross would love to acquire Tebow if the opportunity is there just to sell seats if nothing else. He saw the response when he honored Tebow last year.

LOL...

The parade is going to start soon so enjoy and catch you all later.

PS.. it's going to be a fun night once all the Patty-ed up BERP posters start posting. lol

Enjoy.

Matt Moore is a journey man Quarterback who is yet to play football for a full season in any team he has been part of in the NFL. He should remain a permanent backup. Some players thrive as backups. He may remain in the league for a minimum of 17 seasons with this role. The Miami Dolphins need a durable Quarterback.
I don't see untested Flynn coming to the Dolphins. He only started two games with the Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Packers did not attempt to trade him or put a Franchise tag. He reamined a backup for a few years. I still prefer Flynn as a starter for the Dolphins because of coach Philbin.------Victor, Pensacola FL

If Flynn beats the QBs that I think he's better than, and loses to those he's not better than, here's how it would shape up.
Since we tend to split with the Jets anyway, I gave that split here as well. The Bills are usually a split too, but I gave us the benefit on that one.
It's LAST YEAR's schedule, but this year's wasn't available, so...

Sep 12 - L vs. Brady,
Sep 18 - L vs. Shaub,
Sep 25 - W at McCoy,
Oct 2 - L at Rivers
Oct 9 - Open
Oct 17 - L at Sanchez
Oct 23 - L vs. (Tebow/*P.Manning)
Oct 30 - L at E.Manning
Nov 6 - W at Cassel
Nov 13 - W vs. R.Griffin (*only because he's a rookie)
Nov 20 - W vs. Fitzpatrick
Nov 24 - L at Romo
Dec 4 - W vs. Palmer/Cambell
Dec 11 - L vs. Vick
Dec 18 - W at Fitzpatrick
Dec 24 - L at Brady
Jan 1 - W vs. Sanchez

If this shakes out the way I'm thinking, then we run 7-9. One better than this year.
Folks who think we're going 12-4 next year .. you can't win games in a void - you have to beat good teams, with good QBs.
Still feel confident in Flynn?
Personally I like the idea of a drafted QB whose ultimate performance is a mystery. Could be a bust, but might be amazing. THAT hope is better to me than a "respectable" 7-9, 8-8.
Just feels like another band-aid.

And unless the FO wants 3 starting caliber QBs on their roster, with the majority of money tied to all 3 of those QBs, then we're not drafting a QB if we get Flynn.

Obviously, juts my opinion, but I think it's reasonable.

This is hysterical. Everything Ross/Ireland do is wrong.

Matt Moore's cap amount for 2012 is $3.775, does not sound like NFL starter pay to me.

Time to talk to Long, Dansby, Bell, Incognito, Fasano, and McDaniel about re-structure.
Maybe Bush also.

If Miami the one organization that best knows Flynn beside GB refuses to give him “Franchise Money” no other team will. So Miami should have the upper hand in the negotiation.

How in the hell can you possibly argue that Ireland made a good move by getting rid of Marshall when he is the jackass that brought him in in the first place giving up 2nd rounders and getting back 3rd rounders. If Marshall is such a bum why bring him in to begin with. Ireland is a POS and the entire league knows and its why the Dolphins will never get top tier players of coaches to come here ie Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher, Peyton Manning. They know that with the jackass of an owner and a complete dueche bag in ireland running the team they stand no chance to build a winner. This combo makes even Jerry Jones look good.

There is a blind man leading this team of blind men.

Truly amazed fins got anything.
Oh, by the way, almost new jersey for sale cheap, just recently purchased.

One of these days you might just get it right with your predictions. After a 1000 of them your bound to get one right, maybe! Oddly when soemone puts him to the task about his prediction that went array he disapears.

"Free agent Matt Flynn's father tells the Palm Beach Post his son could pick a new team as early as this

weekend.
"Logic would tell me he would do something this weekend or thereabouts," Alvin Flynn said. "He doesn’t want to drag this out." Flynn's father says he "enjoyed" his Friday visit with the Seahawks, but never considered signing before heading to South Beach for a visit. If the Dolphins can't lock up Flynn within the next 48 hours, owner Stephen Ross may want to consider a new business venture. "

LMFAO!!! Ha!!! Agreed.

The word is "awry," you dolt. An "array" is something you do with flowers.

Let's see, what did we get for the two 2nd rd'ers in the Marshall deal:

1. Brandon Marshall, he's now gone.

2. Koa Misi, at 150yrs old JT was still a better pass rusher.

Now, we essentially have traded 2 2nd rd picks for 2 3rd picks. If Ireland has missed with two 2nd rd picks. What makes anyone here with at least half a brain think Ireland will do any better with the 2 3rd rd picks he recieved for Marshall?

If you really believe Ireland will do a better job with the 2 3rd rd picks. Then you shouldnt even be allowed to play "connect the dots".

We Have Draft Picks,

I dont need Matt Flynn's father to tell me he wont drag this thing out. Only two teams are interested(Miami/Seattle) and even that interest is "lukewarm" at best. He would look like the biggest idiot of all time if he tried to drag that out.

He drags it out then those teams probably lower the offer once he comes back to the bargaining table. LOL

==============================================
How many teams has Moore been with? The one team before the Fins, he was a back up. As a back up, barring injury to the starter how many full seasons do you think he would have?
And why would GB franchise a back up QB, pay that kind of money when they are already paying Rodgers starter money.

Uh oh! Its not looking good Doll Fans.

Speaking from home in Texas, Alvin Flynn says Matt enjoyed his Seattle visit, but wouldn't make a decision before first visiting the Dolphins.

"He said it was a really nice place, and he enjoyed it, but he wanted to look at both of them. That was the way he felt going in," Alvin Flynn said.

That's what I tell car dealerships when I'm really interested in their car. I like your car but I want to see if there is a better deal out there. Come to find out, there are no better deals out there.

You guys honestly think ANYONE WANTS TO PLAY FOR THIS ORGANIZATION AS LONG AS ROSS AND IRELAND ARE CHARLES IN CHARGE?

"No way he moves UP to get Blackmon...it's just not going to happen so don't get too excited about that prospect.

IMO, the team drafts the best available DE on the board @ #8 and addresses the WR position later in the draft."

NHFinsfan,

Agreed. If Ireland can't find someone who wants the 8th pick I think he'll take Coples. At first I was thinking Melvin Ingram BUT he doesn't fit Irleand's size requirement @ less than 6'2". I don't know how much that matters but that's the way he operates. I also think this kid Mercilus will be part of the conversation.

BOILED CORN BEEF DINNER=DOG FOOD.

Mrs. June Hungary Troll,
If you wish to correct my grammer, spelling , or overall use of the english language thats fine. However, there is no need to call someone names.

"If the Dolphins can't lock up Flynn within the next 48 hours, owner Stephen Ross may want to consider a new business venture. "

Yesterdays Gone,

This IS what I agree with not the other garbage that Flynn's dad said.

Flynn should see if he can get a better deal riding the pine behind Rodgers. Heck, I'd take that backup money and 2 or 3 more future superbowl rings. Waiting for Aaron to twist his ankle to drive my stock price up.

Jack,

That's brilliant. I can't understand why Flynn would want to be a starter either.

YG, I'm confident Ireland can turn those Marshall picks he got, into a Pat Turner or a Pat White. Or add a pick to those 2 and get a 3rd string RB.

finfaneurope,

So what are you saying? I disappeared? Um, my friend, I perhaps unlike many here don't spend 24 hours a day on here AND if you think that I am going to go back page by page, post by post to see if someone responded or posted about me your mistaken.

I just as you "may" predict as much and as many times as I wish to. Is there anything wrong with that? Post as you may just as i do and also THANK YOU as you are correct.. Some day my predictions "MAY" come true, even if they are in the millions.

PS. My predictions are as good as the next persons, especially the media and in fact... some on here actually get it right once in a while.

Happy Saint Patty's day to you.

Keep up guys, we just signed DE/olb Mark Anderson. Think he had like 10 sacks for the Pats last season. nBut the guy has been inconsistent throughout his career in the sack dept.

We also signed Westerman. He had 3.5 sack for the Jets last year. Guess Ireland feels he can be developed even more. With two de/olb signings over the last two days. IMO, that doesnt signal Ireland looking in the CVoples/Mercilus direction in the draft.

If anything, it may signal ot Reilly Rief at #8 just like mock drafts have predicted. Or a tradeback and perhaps pick up another 2nd rd pick and take a wr 1st rd. Because I highly doubt Ireland trades up for Blackmon.

Just doesnt make sense to a guy/idiot like Ireland.

WE HAVE DRAFT PICKS.........

IT'S WRONG WHAT YOU SAID @ 12;48 PM...

IF KOLB FOLLOWED THAT ADVICE ,HE WOULD NOT HAVE THAT 60 MILLION ,24 MILLION GUARANTEED ..........

"Rams signed DL Kendall Langford, formerly of the Dolphins, to a four-year, $24 million contract.
The deal includes $12 million guaranteed. Unsurprisingly, the Rams were able to outbid the penny-pinching Bengals. It's an extremely-nice haul for a player who took a small step back during the final year of his rookie deal last season, but solid signing for a team that let itself get long in the tooth along its defensive line the past few seasons. However, Langford will be forced to switch to a 4-3 defense after playing in a 3-4 in South Beach. Somewhat of a hybrid lineman, Langford has excelled as both a pass rusher and run stuffer during his career. His signing likely takes the Rams out of the running for free agent DL Jason Jones. "

Langford has excelled as pass rusher???? When was this??? Clearly some of these writers know very little & talk out of these a##es. The Rams just overpaid for a guy who is coming off his worst season in a contract year. No way would I pay Langford $6 Million a year. Now Randy Starks or Soliai who can both play in a 4-3 & 3-4??? That's a different story

"IT'S WRONG WHAT YOU SAID @ 12;48 PM...

Aloco,

I was being sarcastic. What Jack said was idiotic.

BOILED CORN BEEF IS JUST FOOD FOR THE HOMELESS ONLY........

Question: Why would Flynn come to a team with no #1 WR? Sort of defeats the purpose does it not? How is that going to drive up his low ball contract working with #5 and #6 WR's?

LOL!!! The NFC West is a lot easier division to win in than the AFC East. Patriots or Jets are etched in stone year in and year out on winning that division. As long as Brady and Belecheat are there, Miami won't ever sniff the AFC East trophy.

Flynn has a better chance of beating out T-Jack than Matt Moore.

In 4 drafts under this fo we have only found one definite superstar(Long), possibly another(Pouncey), but too bad theyre only olinemen.

Other than that we've found one budding star(Vontae Davis) and a whole bunch of under performers and mild contributors. But ohhhhhhhhh.... Some here say Ireland's doing a good job.

I would be entitled to agree if we were playing a game of "Indian givers".

JACK....... WHAT AFC EAST TROPHY ?

What plan will Ireland dust off if he fails to snag Flynn? We already up to plan J.

If 10 sacks were so good I'd think that player would be resigned. Oh wait a minute! All you F'ers are claiming stats don't matter when it comes to Marshall. But stats matter when it comes to Patriot cast offs.

We Have Draft Picks,

I would not be surprised in the least if Langford excells in the 4-3 defense as a pass rusher. Now he'll be on the true edge in pass rush situations. Not on the inside to get gobbled up by the guard and center.

I always had a sneaky suspision Langford might be in the wrong defense(3-4). If Langford breaks out for a 10 sack season this year. Just add one more Huge list to many by this totally inept fo.

I send them one too

We Have Draft Picks:

...Clearly some of these writers know very little & talk out of there a##es....

A statement I will never disagree with. It's HIGH-larious what some of these drones will say during a pre-game show, too, demonstrating zero knowledge of the team they are covering that day.

It's like they crammed for a final, and failed.

JACK........

YOU NEED TO CLEAN YOUR LANGUAGE TO BE ACCEPTED HERE.

Jack Sparrow,

Mark anderson ate Mark Columbo alive when we played the Pats. Seems like 5 of his 10 sacks this year came against Columbo. Maybe that's why Ireland signed him. He looked like a hof DE against Columbo.

But you ort I could probably manage that! LOL

I can tell the folks who never played the game. One hit and your career is over. Don't think Belecheat will say, "you know what, we just gonna pay you out."

LOL!!! I swear I get dumber every time I come here.

Only idiots want the quick cheap money instead of the long expensive money. Can't get hurt sitting behind Aaron...unless he gets hurt. Then DRIVE YOUR STOCK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me throw this out there for chewing.

Steve Young reports that Harbaugh was throwing to Peyton and probably will sign him.

If, IF that becomes reality and Peyton becomes a 49er, how will THAT effect the Dolphins?

Alex Smith without a doubt will be released and the Dolphins are walking around the facility as we speak with Flynn.

What interest "may" the Dolphins have in Smith? That interest if any cant come until all the ink dries with Manning and what they decide to do with Smith.

So. If that panned out and the Dolphins elected to "wait it out on Smith" we potentially can lose Flynn AND Smith.

status qua.. Moore would be the starter this season as who's left.

For those that say I make too many predictions, This is NOT one of them.

Just too many choices for THE SCOUT.

ACCEPTED BY WHO? Malcontents and megalomaniacs? Half you numb nuts can't recognize a football between a golf ball.

NY G ,,,,,,,,,,

WE CAN'T LET MOORE FEEL BAD,WE MUST LET HIM START NEXT YEAR . WE COULD HAVE ANOTHER GREAT QB IN OUR HANDS .................

In retrospect, Jack has a point.

JACK........ GO HAVE YOUR DOG FOOD ,THE BOILED DINNER .

I am livid with this organization. We trade our best offensive weapon for no good reason. This team is going backwards and we are fixing for a three win season. Bush had his best year partly because Marshall demands attention. I would never have let Eric Winston out of the building but hey what do I know. 12 years without a playoff win that's what. Being a fan has never been this trying and I cringe at what our season is looking like already.

D MAN CANADA OUT!!!

YOU NEED TO STFU ALOCO. YOU BEEN A DOLPHIN HOMER FOR QUITE SOME TIME. EVERYONE KNOWS YOU ARE BEOWULF.

ALoco,

The fly in the shepherd's pie today is that Jeffy "THE SCOUT" Ireland on Saint Patrick's Day is walking around the facility with a QB named Flynn while Danny Boy is playing over the sound system.

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
