« Dolphins eliminated from Manning chase, Flynn visiting | Main | Smith visit smells like leverage ... let's hope »

Getting Flynn at right price as important as getting him

The question today is apparently not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Matt Flynn. It seems if the team gets a chance to sign the Green Bay free agent backup quarterback, that is exactly what will happen.

No, the question I believe more important is not whether the Dolphins will try to sign Flynn but how they'll try to sign Flynn. It's a completely different issue and definitely as important an issue.

Flynn, according to a reliable source, will be in town sometime late tonight. He'll be here, assuming he doesn't get blown away by the Seattle Seahawks and simply jumps at the opportunity. But once he arrives, then what?

What to do with Flynn?

Do the Dolphins commit to Flynn as their starter or do they commit to him as, ahem, a quarterback who will come to camp and compete with Matt Moore for the starting job. In other words, do the Dolphins commit starting quarterback money or do they commit the kind of money a player who has a chance to start but isn't certain of that typically gets?

If the Dolphins are committing to Flynn as their starter, they may have to spend between $7-$9 million per season. The deal would probably extend past two years and there would be a chunky bag of guaranteed money included.

The lesser commitment is obviously cheaper -- probably $4-$5 million per year with incentive clauses that would hike the deal's worth if Flynn wins the starting job, thus deserving more money. This kind of deal protects the team if he fails.

Flynn is worth one but definitely not the other. He is a value if signing a deal that protects the team in case he's more A.J. Feeley than Drew Brees. He still gets paid if he becomes a star. But he has to earn his money rather than getting it the minute he walks in the locker room.

Makes sense, right?

The problem is Flynn wants to maximize his earning. He will want the biggest deal he can get, certainly his agent will want that. And because he's got two quarterback-hungry teams talking to him, he might be able to leverage one versus the other to get what he wants.

(Personally, I don't see the Seahawks letting themselves be held up. They paid Travaris Jackson a two-year deal worth $8 million last season. I assume if they offer Flynn, it'll be a similar deal and ask him to fight for the starting job. I say this because you must remember Flynn was not Seattle's top QB choice this offseason. They actually scheduled Chad Henne to come to town before Flynn. Henne never made it because he signed with Jacksonville.)

Well, the Dolphins can similarly make the case that Flynn is not their top choice. At least I hope they make that case. Everyone knows they wanted Peyton Manning. And I assume they aren't going to use the money on Flynn that they would have used on Manning.

At least I hope not because that's just dumb.

I guess what I'm asking is for the Dolphins to hold their desperation in check. Getting Flynn simply isn't like getting Manning. We don't even know if he's any good.

With Flynn it's not just about getting him to come. As a relatively unproven player, he has to come at the right price -- for the team.

I think he knows, what we all know, you are someone pretending to be someone else.

I have no idea where the 49ers will serve up Alex Smith if they sign Peyton Manning talk is coming from. Jeff Ireland works in Miami. Only Ireland would be dumb enough to do that.

Im sure Harbaugh and his GM knows Peyton could be only one hit away from retirement. If Peyton goes down in week 2, the Niners get rid of Smith, then whoever backs up Smith right now becomes the starter.

Then what once looked liked a "goldrush season under Manning, now becomes "fools gold" under the backup qb.
With Manning's neck injury history the Niners would be "fools" to let Alex Smith go in such a quick heap.

I see I have a copycat admirer @ 1:13 PM. LOL

The dummies who have nothing to say have come out t5o play.

Keep copy catting my screen name. Im out.

Have fun idiot! LOL

There is also the Harbaugh Ross connection. Although Harbaugh choose the 49ers Ross has connections which could lead to a deal for Smith.

I tell you, if I was Harbough I keep Smith and wouldn't even consider Peyton. I mean Smith took them to the NFC championship and it wasn't Smiths fault that the rookie fumbled the ball. How do you dump a QB that brought you to that for Peyton? Smith deserves another shot as what more can you ask a QB for.

"Alex Smith without a doubt will be released and the Dolphins are walking around the facility as we speak with Flynn."

Released??? Smith is an UFA!!! He can sign with anyone he wants BUT he wants to stay in SF & I can't blame him. Not sure if the Niners will sign Manning but with that team I like their chances of winning a SB regardless.

I still think Manning winds up in Denver.

Think about this numb nuts. They were reporting Flynn was close to a decision before he even landed in Miami.

LOL!!! Y'all better hope Ireland pulls this off. If he doesn't pull it off then its on to plan Z. If Miami was the spot, I'm not sure why Flynn even went to Seattle.

I thought Philbin and Flynn's bond was stronger than oak? You feeling me Cush? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90BdnenVxvo

My very first post after 3 years of reading. Having just read these 17 pages of comments, and other blogs, I can honestly say one thing:

MAINLY, BUT NOT LIMITED TO: Clue, Craig M, Phins78, Aloco, home

Aloco, home & clue are textbook idiots! CraigM, phins & a few more of you are disgruntled, egotistical, gasbags! Here's some sound advice...get a life!

We Have Draft Picks,

Wrong choice of words in released, thanks. They are very close to a 3 yr deal of which Smith was said to be very happy in staying in SF.

I agree, they have a solid D and as long as the 49ers remains intact they are looking good for another chance.

I'm not sure where you got that we signed Mark Anderson. I hope we do BUT my guess is that he'll return to the Patriots.

The best chance we have of beating the Patriots as long as Brady is playing is to continue to add pass rushers on defense.

Has the NFL ever seen a worse GM then Ireland? How do you stink so bad and keep your job?

We Have Draft Picks,

Get real. Beating the Pats is a pipedream with our scrub players and coaches and FO.

"I agree, they have a solid D and as long as the 49ers remains intact they are looking good for another chance.'

They're intact. They have their entire starting defense coming back & on offense all they lost was a starting Guard (Snyder), an injured WR (Morgan), & maybe Ted Ginn. I know the Niners signed Moss but IMO they need to find another WR just in case Moss is done. If they do that & replace Snyder @ Guard & can stay RELATIVELY healthy I'd make them the favorites to win a SB next year. If it's Peyton or Smith.

"Get real. Beating the Pats is a pipedream with our scrub players and coaches and FO."

If we get Flynn to run Philbin's offense we're going to be better than the naysayers like you think. Signing Richard Marshall makes our secondary better & our depth is pretty damn good across the board on defense.

Richard Marshall = Gibril Wilson

Let's face it, the only teams interested in Flynn are the two with the worst QB situation. Flynn has drawn no interest during FA. GB couldn't even trade him, they let him walk free.

How is it some of you can't see this is repeating the same old thing? Drafting some teams cast off FA and hoping for a miracle?

We Have Draft Picks,

My mom worked for my dad. My dad was a pimp.

Matt Flynn - A.J. Feeley revisited

Will Irescum ask Flynn if his momma's a hooka?

I like to watch wrestling and stroke myself.

Itrscum likes like to watch wrestling and stroke himself.

What's wrong with this picture?

We miss out on Manning and are now hot to sign Flynn? Isn't this like missing out on Brees so we sign Cleo Lemon because he worked with Cameron in SD?

Why yes, it is.

How do you stink so bad and keep your job?

Posted by: Scotty | March 17, 2012 at 01:32 PM

Yes ALoco, tell us how you do it.

Even if Flynn came to Miami he's already screwed. How the heck can you demand player respect coming to a team that offered you the most money?

If I were him, I would have taken the first contract available. The PROVE MYSELF as a team leader. Then make the quan. But he didn't, he went on a tour to drive his price up.

DON'T SIT HERE AND TELL ME FLYNN WANTS TO START! If he wanted to start there should have be NO Seattle visit. He would have signed with Miami right away. Oh wait, Philbin loves him so much that the organization low balled Flynn. That's some tough love right there.

I have nothing worthwhile to say, but I like to type.

Flynn not sign here.
Flynn not stupid.
Flynn visit Miami as favor to Philbin so not embarass him.
In GB Flynn have time to throw.
And quality WR's to throw to.
Seattle have Marshawn Lynch and Sidney Rice.
Miami have no RT, RG or WR.
Do math and put down pipe.

Our next QB come from same place as current QB: acorn bin.
Caleb Hanie/Mark Brunell/Luke McCown that our next QB.
Not goof free agent.
Good free agents don't sign here.
Acorns sign here.
Acorn belong on end of wang not in starting lineup.

I was wrong about Henne. He was not franchised.

I return to swallow my pride, and all of your loads.

I am ready to swallow, fill me up with your cream.

I believe the Dolphins will not break the bank on Flynn.
They can't anyway they only have 5 million to spend and Moore needs competition that was the mistake with Henne.

Jack Jerkoff Sparrow, you have ZERO credibility after saying Flynn signed with Seattle yesterday and it was confirmed. Nothing you say makes you credible. Go to the PB Post Blog.

ALoco how are things in Massastupids?

I wouldnt give Flynn more than 3-4 mill/season. He's unproven and a 7th rd pick for a reason.

Why does everyone keep saying get this guy?!? He's played in 2 games with a super bowl teams. Last time we "got that guy" A.J. Feeley made us wish we had Ray Lucas back!? Point is, Matt Moore did a lot with what was given to him. Was he so bad that we can't even consider him back? Seems to me, he's more then willing to be molded into whatever keeps him on the field, he has way more experience then Flynn and seemed to be a team guy. Give him a shot and go from there. Why drop starter money on Flynn and waste the money that could have been better used on Winston or Williams. If Flynn wants to come for backup money and earn a big contract, do it. If he wants starter money have fun in Seattle, see where that gets them.

Just read Greg Camarillo is a FA. I know he's not a top flite guy but he has great hands and runs very sharp, clean routes. IN a WC offense, he and Bess would excel. Hartline? Meh.

I honestly don't know what to say about Flynn. Some say Matt Moore isn't accurate enough to QB the WC offense. I have no clue about that. I think the kid is plenty smart and is a decent QB. Flynn knows the system, though, and that gives him an advantage. If they want him, though, they cannot lowball him as ahs been reported. Seattle will pony up. It's not that he's worth the money but I think you need him for this offense.

The major problem the Fins have beyond that (and the many positions at which they just plain suck) is money. $5 million left and a QB to sign and draft picks to sign and no reported re-negotiations of contracts to free up money. Do they re-negotiate with someone like Long by extending him and spreading the money out - with his injuries he won't command the huge money - big money, yes, but not huge? It'll be interesting to see where they come up with the cash. When do they have to be under the cap? Can they go beyond it for now and find the money in cuts and contract changes later? I doubt that very much.

Just to stir the pot a bit more... did Ross dally too long with Paymeaton that Flynn might already be lost to Seattle?

Man the Dolphins must still be in lockdown mode. It would be nice to know what their plans are. I mean are we still in a win now mode even though we didn't get Manning?

Armando how about a Q&A with Ireland? That would be interesting.

As for the QB position I hope that Ross in getting out of it now and letting the football people figure it out.

The best case scenario is for Philbin and Sherman to pitch to Ireland who would best fit in their offense, be it Moore, Flynn, Tannehill, or someone else.

Maybe they did, maybe thats how they come up with their pecking order after Manning. If thats the case i'm fine with it. As long as their not just trying to pacify Ross with the biggest name availble.

So far that plan hasn't worked very well.

No Andrew Luck

No RG3

No Peyton Manning

We're gettin 7th rd backup Matt friggin Flynn?

Jack Sparrow you need to look at things from all sides. You seem to take very narrow minded views on certain subjects. There are always so many factors.

You seem to be saying on this page that if Flynn really wanted to start he wouldn't have went to Seattle. You also mentioned something along the lines of if he and Philbin are so close why did he go to Seattle.

There's a bigger picture that I sometimes think gets lost in your enthusiasm on some things.

Yes Flynn really wants to start. Going to Seattle only means that he wants to look at what's out there. Miami and Seattle are the only ones in the market for a young up and coming qb. Other teams either are set and are looking for a proven commodity to get them over the hump like San Francisco. They're not looking at QBs like Flynn because they're not in the market.

You are suggesting that Flynns agent (you keep saying Flynn as if he's making all of the decisions but the reality of the sporting world is the agents know the game. They are the ones who know how to play teams for more money etc. not the player. They are hired by the players because they are experts in their field and know the ropes.) So you're suggesting his agent should have just taken one interview? That's not a smart way to do business any way you look at it and it is not how the world works. It's a very simplistic and naive way of looking at things.

Has nothing to do with him not wanting to start and has everything to do with the fact that only two teams are in the market (Cleveland is obviously drafting a qb) and the only way to increase his value, as the agent knows, is to make it seem like someone else is interested. Therefore you go to the team you don't want to be on, try to get an offer, and then bring it to the team that you do want to get more money. That's the way it has been done since free agency started.

Ryan Clark never wanted to leave Pittsburgh. They made him an offer, he then went to the Dolphins and they offered him more he took that offer back to Pitt, got a raise and stayed where he was always going to stay. The market needed to be tested and that's what Flynn's agent is doing. PERIOD, END OF STORY.

All of these conspiracy theories of yours are fun but have no rationale thought behind them.

It's not the same thing "skyles" because Flynn is coming into a system that he already knows and would be coming to a team with a coach hes worked with for 4 years. It's not the same thing and there is no comparison that can be made. This has never happened before.

MJ Cleo Lemon was worked with Cameron,,,,,who is a f***ing moron compared to Philbin,,, for one season and he was a third string qb. Not the same thing in any sense. Totally different situations.

Fire Ireland,

How about fire Stephen Ross ?

MJ Cleo Lemon was worked with Cameron,,,,,who is a f***ing moron compared to Philbin,,, for one season and he was a third string qb. Not the same thing in any sense. Totally different situations.

Posted by: Phins78 | March 17, 2012 at 05:30 PM

What is different? You can call Cameron a moron but it doesn't change the fact he was a highly successful OC in SD and Baltimore. Philbin has a ring, ok, he didn't get it on his own. There is nothing different. The fact you are still pissed Cam failed in Miami changes nothing. Same scenario. Flynn is Philbins Cleo.

"If I were him, I would have taken the first contract available. The PROVE MYSELF as a team leader. Then make the quan. But he didn't, he went on a tour to drive his price up."

Yeah, because that's what smart people do. His agent knows exactly what he's doing. Look at who is agent is employed by and how those players make out. If you were him? If you were him you would do exactly what your agent freaking told you to do because he's the one making you money.

Phins, Marty Schott and Harbaugh are too of the most respected names in the NFL, and they both saw fit to hire Cam as an OC. So you can call him a moron, but you only look like a moron for saying it. I guess you think you have a better football mind that Schotty and Harbaugh.

Jack, every comment is negative from you. Never one bit of objectivity. Never one solution. What's your solution. You don't want Flynn so what do you do? What's your plan?

It is rather humorous to see some bloggers actually regard their own opinion more valuable than the most successful NFL coaches.

Lazo They hired him as an offensive coordinator. We hired him as a head coach. Big difference wouldn't you say? Are you new to football? There are great head coaches and there are great coordinators, sometimes they can't cross over well, been proven hundreds of times.

Cameron while being a solid Offensive coordinator was in way over his head as a head coach. FAIL FORWARD FAST? Are you f***ing kidding me?

Everyone in the sporting world, especially Dolphins fans are aware of this.

Keep up guys, we just signed DE/olb Mark Anderson. Think he had like 10 sacks for the Pats last season. nBut the guy has been inconsistent throughout his career in the sack dept.
We also signed Westerman. He had 3.5 sack for the Jets last year. Guess Ireland feels he can be developed even more. With two de/olb signings over the last two days. IMO, that doesnt signal Ireland looking in the CVoples/Mercilus direction in the draft.
If anything, it may signal ot Reilly Rief at #8 just like mock drafts have predicted. Or a tradeback and perhaps pick up another 2nd rd pick and take a wr 1st rd. Because I highly doubt Ireland trades up for Blackmon.
Just doesnt make sense to a guy/idiot like Ireland.
Posted by: Yesterday's Gone | March 17, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Anderson didn't sign anything. He plans on visiting at least another team before making a decision...

Lazo it's funny that you call yourself a Dolphins fan yet are clueless about anything Dolphins or football related. Please go back to watching soccer. I never said I was smarter or even inferred it. You saif Cameron was hired by those guys as a coordinator and I said he was a bad head coach so how exactly does that prove you are right?

It only proves that you need to work on your comprehension skills.

Jack, every comment is negative from you. Never one bit of objectivity. Never one solution. What's your solution. You don't want Flynn so what do you do? What's your plan?
Posted by: Phins78 | March 17, 2012 at 05:35 PM

There aint much positive about 6-10. And then losing Mike Nolan and Da Beast.

Phins, Philbin has still not had his first game as HC and you are already judging him. He has done nothing yet. Let's see.

Cam totally flopped as HC in Miami. It's a bummer. Still, NFL execs see his OC abilities worth millions and he stays employed. Who am I to judge those who clearly know far more than I do?

It's rather humorous that new names pop up every day, spend a bunch of hours talking in here and then never return. Where's Thronton? Hmmmmmmmm

It's rather humorous that a bunch of puss wads are so scared to back up their opinions that they constantly sign in under different names. Afraid to even sign in for real so their name is in blue. Nope, wouldn't want to have to be accountable for your posts.

It's rather humorous that some people are so pathetic.

Alrighty then....

Let's have 18 more pages of speculation where everybody thinks they're right and everybody else is wrong.

Phins, you can say Cam failed as HC. Because he did. Calling him a moron is really stupid on your part. You obviously don't know what it is to be thrown into the fire and fail. Failing does not make you a moron.

Every scientific advancement is born of thousands of failures before each success. To call someone a moron for failing is pure ignorance.

Phins needs to understand this or promise to not have children.
